Other What are books you read to get inspired! <3

Witcher Series helps me. What about yourself?
Oh the Witcher series is really good!
I'm not certain. Nothing really has that bite to it! I have been listening to Stephen Fry Mythos which is entertaining

The Last Unicorn is one of my favorites! The prose is so poetic and beautiful. I also really enjoy the songs that Beagle wrote such as None but a Harper and The Way I Behaved. Schmendrick, Molly Grue, King Haggard all have some really memorable quotes too.

Kind of a gimmie but The Picture of Dorian Gray. I don't think I could put it into words better than the various English majors who love this book.
Moby Dick and Candide as well! Great pieces of literature that show you don't need to be 100% serious all the time to write something great. (And Catch 22 to a degree)
Flowers for Algernon has a unique use of perspective, and has been a great inspiration for getting into the mindset of my character.
The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice have some of my favorite use of purple prose even though I don't use it much except to emphasize dramatic scenes or if I'm playing a character who thinks like that.

I also really like the divine by mistake series. It's like a guilty pleasure. Although it's such a hokey pokey series it sort of gives you permission to feel transformed into a world where you are a goddess.

Interesting to know what others use for inspiration with these novels

I live for my annual Murderbot Diaries reread, and inevitably end up writing some snarky sci-fi afterwards.

I just picked up Network Effect and I'm sooo hyped to read it. really been enjoying the series so far.

I'm a huge sucker for Tamsyn Muir's writing style but I've also recently been introduced to Cassandra Khaw, who I'm liking a lot. other stuff I read for inspo ranges but I love any kind of queer fantasy or sci-fi or things that blend the two genres. I also find reading poetry to be really helpful for prose inspiration (I'm partial to Mary Oliver)

Network Effect is sooo good! I hope you like it!

I'm a little familiar with Tamsyn Muir. As far as queer sci-fi goes, I adore Malka Older's Mossa & Plieti series and Stina Leicht's Persephone station series.

I'll have to check those out for sure then!

I saw someone said they read The Last Unicorn and I have to say that I also read it for inspiration when writing a more “dark” magic setting!

Lately I’ve picked up the song of Achilles and it’s very good, I’ve picked up the way on how the characters talk admittedly, but overall my writing style is similar to this one author who wrote one of my favorite horror books. Unfortunately my book shelf isn’t as full as it used to be so I’m definitely gonna check out the books recommended here for more inspiration in my writing ^^

I read my favourite chapter books from when I was a kid! Mine specifically is this kinda obscure one about a kid and his brother in 1800s Utah pulling con man type stunts, but the writing is always fast paced and easy to read. It reminds me that my writing doesn't have to be ground breaking or anything to be good and enjoyable

What books do you like to read to get you in the mood for writing?
It's always been The Outsiders. I grew up with the book and movie especially in school when I was still a student. And a lot of my characters are similar, cause for example—Johnny and Ponyboy's (and the others) life is somewhat like mine, I grew up running away and getting into cop trouble a lot. It feels like I've always been running, only now I can stop and breathe you know?? Idk I love that book and it makes me think hard.

Anything and everything by Robert Greene.
Those are dense reads, so you read 48 laws of power? How did you like it? I always found myself curious to read but he is certainly not an author I would gravitate to.
Just adding, how do these types of books inspire you to write in active roleplay?

I like reading fanfics, or horror stories my fav writer is stephan kind and I'm currently reading a book by him called you like it darker its been giving me great ideas for rps and poems!

Oh damn. Sorry. I didn't realize it was inspiration for writing. I thought it was about being inspired for life itself. lol

Well... All his books are basically my Bible. I think they are the greatest books ever and have timeless advice. I've read and re-read many of his chapters many times.

Anyone who reads The 48 Laws of Power and says that it's only for psychopaths and sociopaths is a sheltered softie who never had it rough in life. The reality is that these forty-eight laws are something you do (consciously or unconsciously) or terrible people will eat you for breakfast. And those who know these laws and use them well are the ones who become self-made deca-millionaires or even more.

Greene shares the more personal side of him and the deeper side of him with his book The 50th Law that really showcases his philosophy of life, while the 48 Laws is more of his methods.

I'd rather nobody reads his books because I don't want any potential enemies getting any advantage in life. I want them to be ignorant.

How has this book served your success though? I've often see you post about being successful and wanting to be successful but I just don't see any concrete fruition of it.
This is not said in any way except like observation. Although, I have a completely, profoundly, different opinion then you. I am sincerely curious how something so forcefully one sided. Leads to success. I mean, perhaps if you were born into wealth, or had advantages in life to earn the ability to use any of those laws. It's just confusing to me the result generally seems reserved for like that small percentage of people. Which is why any and all of his writings do not resonate with me. I see no success in a one sided mindset. A mindset which sets people on certain levels if you get me?

Books which have given me profound inspiration in life have been those like : The Kite Runner, The Shadows of The Sun, Eckhart Tolle Inner Stillness. These books give feelings of deep profound gratitude. Which then leads me into really wanting to explore the world and people around me. I've been meaning to read more and I will say I didn't read much of The Shadows of the Sun but I'm probably going to borrow it from my mother again. It's a really good read.

Books of power. I don't know. Just don't resonate with them. Though, I am sincerely curious. As my mother was heavily into literature all her life. I was raised by two professors. So, I am always asking questions. So sorry. It's like in my nature.

Though, truly, with neutrality, how does this serve your success? Give me a real life example? I know Eckhart Tolle ( as unfortunately popularized by oprah yuck) gave me a very profound life changing view on how pain transmutes itself into every day life and how to move through pain effectively instead of resisting it and letting it consume everything.

No one is supposed to find actual inspiration in The 48 Laws of Power. That's supposed to happen in his book, The 50th Law, which he co-wrote with Curtis Jackson (the rapper.).

But I am the exception to the rule in that I see the evil in that book as beautiful. I'm using the word "evil" here to make it sound like it, though I don't even believe good or evil exist in reality. But I see the beauty of the evil in that book because evil is amazing. Evil and violence are profoundly human things. By being evil and violent, you embrace the part of you that makes you strong. In life, only the strong gets to eat and breed.

The book is for everybody. Not just people high in the political realm. It's for anyone who wants to survive and thrive anywhere.

Greene's books gave me success in multiple dimensions in life. One of them is the strategy of being like water, always changing always moving. I make adjustments in my life all the time to keep my job performance at peak capacity. And for that, I've become in the radar of a promotion to operations manager here in my gym.

It also helped me get laid in the past. It also made my social skills sharper than ever. His advice about being bold allowed me to crush my enemies with mere words, even though the guy had a huge number of people backing him.

It's a book for everybody and I'd rather less people read it. I want Robert Greene's wisdom all to myself and no one else.

I know I've already posted here but I'm adding another favorite read. It's more spoken word but Shane Koyczan.
The most powerful spoken word poet I've ever heard. I love his poem swiftly and the animation accompanied with it is something no words can describe.
What a wonderful and powerful man. Now I have to go listen to some awesome poetry :P Hopefully I wont cry too much <3

Pretty much anything gets me inspirational but I'll name a few.

1Q84 by Haruki Murakami

Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson-If you are looking to improve your writing, give this a read. Not only is it descriptive, it's a good book.

The Love Child by Philippa Carr. Has your historical fiction if you need some pointers.

my collection of Conan the Barbarian comics/novels, as well as my Judge Dredd stuff. Gorean series, Shadowrun novels, Necromunda novels out of the Black Library... not to mention my tiny library of Warhammer 40k codices and supplements, as well as my various 3e & 3.5 D&D manuals, Starfinder... my old Heavy Metal Magazines. No, they are not about music. lol
