Twin Fantasy
My Boy
Charlie McAllister
There's a song in my head: Untrust Us - Crystal Castles
Chinese Funeral was not just a garage band.
Charlie had put at least a year of his blood, sweat and tears into his two-man band. Writing, recording, editing, drawing the cover for an album that wasn't even done. He'd put in the work. He'd put in the goddamn time.
"Most people don't go into jobs where they use anything. Becoming an artist is probably as difficult as becoming an acclaimed scientist or something, usually the best you'll get is becoming a teacher. And, what with the rise of the internet, it's actually way easier to start a career in the arts." Despite the firmness in his tone, Charlie still refused eye contact. Eyes were the scariest part of a face. They couldn't harm you, but they could see and reveal everything.
"Picasso wasn't born making cubist pieces. In fact, I think he also said something about how you 'have to learn the rules before you can break them'. How are you supposed to learn the rules if not given an opportunity? Why is it optional to take art, but not calculus? I haven't got any use for calculus. People measure each other based on whether they can do math, but some of the smartest people are just awful at it. Freddie Mercury was a genius, but he wasn't a mathematician or historian or anything like that. Picasso didn't need a thorough understanding of trigonometry before he created Guernica."
He swallowed. And rose his voice, just a bit.
"And- and I haven't funneled two years of my life into the recording process for some stranger to call my group a 'garage band'!"
