Mr. Tuscaloosa stood up and frowned as Asami walked off. Perhaps he let her get too far away and perhaps he spoke too softly, so she may not have heard him, but still he said, "Miss Asami, you may not care and you may not believe me...I find it difficult to believe I am saying this myself...but, I am telling the truth, just as you told me. As delectable as you surely must be, I would rather have you serving my meals than being one."
When he had said this, he quickly picked up his book, stuffed it in his pouch and hurried out of the cafe.

Asami heard his voice behind her and she stopped but didn't turn around,"I am very glad to hear you think that but that isn't what you are thinking, what you're saying is completely different then what you're thinking." Asami told him calmly as she spoke loud enough for him to her but she wasn't so far away from him, maybe a few feet but not far away.

Mr. Tuscaloosa stopped suddenly when he heard Asami's voice. He did not reply at first, just stood, rubbing his large tusks with the fingers of one hand. Finally, he said, "Do you know what I am thinking better than I do myself?" Had he used a different tone, the question would have been sarcastic, but there was nothing in his voice but genuine puzzlement. "If you please, Miss Asami, tell me what I am thinking."

"I can't say for sure what you're thinking but I do think that what you told me is a lie but I appreciate you making an effort." Asami said to him as she turned to face him looking down at him.

Mr. Tuscaloosa nodded. "Yes, I suppose it is a lie. If we were somewhere else, somewhere alone, I imagine I would have given in to my hunger and eaten you already. But even as I enjoyed feasting upon your flesh, I would regret that I must harm you to do so."

He looked around at the people in the cafe. "Perhaps, to live together like this, we must all tell each other lies. If we tell them often enough, perhaps we come to believe them ourselves until finally, we change and the lies become truth."
