Shifting skin, the coming night
The bearers of all good things arrive

I remember hearing a fairytale, once. It was about Three Gods meeting for the first time after many years to discuss the current state of the world they had created. The first God was the ruler of the forest. Long ago at the beginning of time he had planted countless seeds, watching over the millenniums as they gradually sprouted into a network of roots so wide and tangled that any strain between them could crush the world. And when they broke the surface of dirt those roots became great, tall trees. Trees that covered the earth and ate up every tiny space they could, which were so hungry for life that once there was no more ground they began to climb up inside one another and burst from each other's trunks. Trees that continued to grow and grow and get larger and larger until they blocked out the very sun that all life needs to live. The other Gods weren't pleased by this, so it was said they met one night to force their brother to destroy his creations. As he was the youngest of the three, like a reed in the wind he had no choice but to bend to their will. Gods are all powerful; if he wanted to he could have easily scooped the vast forest of that primordial planet into his hands and swept it from existence. But that's not what he did. Instead he cut each tree, one by one. Snapping them down and down snap snap snap until nothing was left but pulp and broken twigs. And from those twigs he made a delicate sculpture. Ribs and femurs and a skull. And over it he poured the pulp. It was a sticky, gooey mixture full of little pieces he had missed, things like leaves and flowers and bark. In the end the God had made something grotesque. And that puppet of twig-bone and pulp-flesh was the first human being.
[/div][/div][/div]

Gods, huh?
Don't tell me you still believe in such things. . .

Yeah, because that's the point
. . .An excuse to punish mankind. . .

. . .If that's the case
Can you really say there's such a thing as a [ bad person ] ?

A forest that was separate from reality, or. . . ?

In the middle of a forest a woman's eyes slowly open to a blur of dusk and midnight noise. The swaying of trees in the wind... a soft cry from some faraway owl... the ambiance it creates is like a womb, familiar and warm. She wants to connect it to a memory, to own this feeling of grass beneath her body and nightfall like a cool blanket across her skin. But she can't. It was like being half awake and reaching for something by your bed, groping around aimlessly but not being able to grab onto the object of your desire. You know it's there, but...

At this point a person might sit up, whether in frustration or defiance, fully awake. But the woman decides instead to let the hand withdraw, abandoning any attempt at recollection to continue to soak in the faux silence of nature at night.

Beautiful. Airy. Serene. Like a peaceful dream forgotten upon waking up, leaving only the faint finger-brush of calm behind as keepsake. The emotion of the memory being all that's left.

The memory...

Wait.

Like a misplaced note in an otherwise harmonic melody the train of thought ended in a discordant jumble, all the pieces finally snapping together as she sat up, registering the fact that she was, indeed, asleep outside on the cold, hard ground. Around her was a large clearing fenced in by trees and mist, their silhouettes trembling in the dark to meld into a wall of smoky black. And near her, sprawled peacefully amidst rocks and weeds, were other human beings. All with chests rising and falling to the rhythm of deep sleep.

The sight struck her as odd but the realization held little depth. After all she could come up with no past experience or particular case study to use as reference. So there was no reason for her to think it was strange, and yet...she did. It was as if there was something...missing...making the synapses in her brain slow to make connections, slow to fire off. But she didn't have the ability to worry about implications she couldn't understand. Instead she turned blank eyes upwards, having nowhere else new to turn. The sky was an ambivalent grey, like a blank slate without purpose or identity, and the deeper she stared the more of nothingness she found. Not even a cloud or the sprouting promise of a star. Just a color symbolizing that night was soon to fall.

I've never been here before.

She didn't know how she knew, only that somehow, deep in her heart, she could be certain of this solemn fact and little else. Her eyelids drooped, as if to coax her into thinking this was all some bizarre dream, and she need only to surrender to the state of the others around her to fall back out of it. But that also didn't...feel right. Because she was here, wasn't she? If she closed her eyes and focused every inch of her could be explored to the edges with awareness. Somehow that didn't seem possible in a dream.

To confirm she extended two pale arms before her, noting presumably thin fingers covered by sleek white. [ Gloves ]. With some amusement she watched those hidden fingers flexing in out, in out. Using complete control over the entire action. No. This was no dream. She peered more closely at the hands, smiling at delicate details of embroidery and lace. Every texture rendered perfectly without the haze of sleep. And then...perhaps too late, a realization began to dawn on her, stalked by a growing sensation of dread.

These hands over which she had full control...
Just who...
Did they belong to?

An adult woman. For some reason she knew things like that with certainty. But all the years that led up to that adulthood were gone. She couldn't even say for sure what she looked like. Directing that stranger's hand to wisp through long, thick hair she could at least ascertain its color and texture as it swept around her. There was something else, too, that got caught up in the movement. A thin, semi-translucent sheet that she knew to be a [ veil ]. For some reason that thought cinched an icy vice around her chest. She looked down, as if she might see through the folds of white to know what about that word was ailing her heart. But there was no answer there. Only a dress that seemed much too fancy for sleeping in a forest. So... a party, perhaps? But wasn't the color white in such a context reserved for. . .?

She coughed, constricted by an overwhelming anxiety that forced her to her knees. The panic from unspoken words exceeded by the thought that she had no idea what brought it on. But there was something undeniably uncomfortable about this situation. Strangers asleep in a forest. No memories of the past. When she had first awoken it had all seemed so dreamlike and peaceful... but perhaps this dream was truly a [ nightmare ].

A few deep breaths served as tether, drawing her back down to the earth on which she sat. She couldn't lose herself, not again. Whatever she possessed now, that would become her starting point, and for now, that was enough. A sense of determination surged through her tiny frame. That's right...the person kneeling on the forest floor in that dress of silk was her. That was what mattered, and the fear, the anxiety, the slowness to wake... she would proudly, even stubbornly, claim it all.

Silk...

Something about it felt right. She ran one of her white-gloved hands over the texture of the dress that clung to her skin. It was a smooth ripple pleasant to the touch. That's how she felt when she thought about that word. So why not claim it, too?

...

Was there anything else?

She stood. Like a shepherd she gazed over her still-slumbering flock of strangers, wondering if it was appropriate to wake them up. But before that she continued to check her body with those gloved hands, as if there might be more secrets to uncover by doing so... or perhaps, by reaffirming the shape of the person that was [ herself ], she might better come to know who she was.

Other than the high quality gown, gloves, and veil she also discovered jewelry. Gold in color hung with azure jewels. She wondered what those jewels were called, and if they were real. Somehow that made sense. Jewelry being [ real ] or [ fake ].

And the last thing she discovered...

It was tucked into the top of her dress, resting against her breast. A simple, small piece of card stock sloppily imprinted with an image that seemed to tap into some vague subconscious understanding deep within.

9da54b6651f75d53b8b29c92d98b5523.png

[ THE EMPRESS. ]

It said in a large, foreboding print. It was a message obviously meant for her. Was it a clue? Something given to herself? A final cry from the Silque who had been lost to the one who was about to be born?

Or was it...from someone else...?

Her cheeks instinctually flushed at the thought of a stranger being able to slip something in so intimate a place. But with the others asleep around her there was no one to question, no one to blame.

She looked back down at the card, turning it over in her hand, hoping it might be able to tell her something, anything...

And it did.

The words there once again struck a jarring chord. No, more like, it was a phrase she couldn't comprehend. An ominous message that caused her breathing to short.

Tarot Back.jpg

The sides of her chest felt like they were beginning to claw against themselves, each breath becoming slower and more staggered than the last. What...was this? Why did those words hold such power? Her head was becoming light. Dizzy. Her head...

She might have broken down right then and there if not for a sound nearby. She turned.

One of the strangers was waking up.

"Excuse me! Are you awake? Are you okay? Can you tell me where we are?"

As if by instinct, she couldn't help but run to their side, kneeling over them with brows narrowed in concern, crinkling an otherwise serene face.

"I don't know what's going on, but..."

She wished she could finish that phrase with some optimistic refrain, but like so many other things that night the words she was searching for just could not be found...

Suddenly awake, a woman stared into the ever-upward reaching escape of trees. Large pines and conifers dwarfed her, as she laid on the cold, damp ground of a forest. That's where the woman remained; staring at the sky, thoughtless. Perhaps she was waiting for someone to retrieve her. Perhaps she was afraid of the dark expanse around her. Perhaps she was just watching God, waiting for his next move.

Well, whatever the reason, it didn't matter now. The woman reached out her arm, almost in attempt to steal what little light made its way through the canopy. Her hands; her forearms covered in a white piece of kidskin. She had just enough energy to sit up, her long black hair being gently picked up after her. There was very little conscious thought put into her current outfit. A simple white dress, which looked as if it were to flow down to the tops of her ankles. Was this something she often wore? She couldn't recall.

The longer the girl sat in silence, the more the girl's mind slowly began to wake up, and the gears in her head stiffly began to turn. What was her name? Why couldn't she remember? In attempt to stand, a small piece of yardstick felt the ground. No larger than a playing card, covered in faded ink and with a single word draped across the front.

1552931802410.png
JUDGEMENT

The woman, who was now Judgement, stared at the card, her hand tracing the details of the wings and the bolded letters. The text was legible, but still unfamiliar. The woman knew that she knew how to read, but not this language. Yet somehow, she did know this language. She turned the card over, in search for more but only found the solemn and grim underside.

1552931999601.png

What did it mean? What had she done to sin? This was the first time that she decided to look around the forest floor. Others, just like her, were on the ground. Another woman was frantically running from person to person.

'It would be best to say nothing'

There was no specific reason why that passed her train of thought, but she decided to heed towards it.

Overhead, she heard the fluttering of wings, followed by a small, light call.

"Tufted Titmouse. Baeolophus bicolor." She softly whispered. Her eyes began darting around the forest as different calls began to echo through the trees. "Pinyon Jay, Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus. Bell's Viero, Vireo bellii." Names she couldn't recognize began flooding her thoughts. Each time a different call rang through the forest, two new names. One after the other. Each call triggered a different name.

What was causing these sudden bursts of knowledge, and why could she remember that, but nothing else? Who was she? What kind of life does she lead? Looking to the others, a deep, gut feeling arose in her stomach. Perhaps the others knew her. Perhaps they were in the same situation. Perhaps they had each sinned... like her.

[div class=fyuri04headerleft]The World[/div]
[div class=fyuri04boxleft]A delicate figure stirred on the ground of a forest, waking up from a deep slumber. Deep amber eyes blinked once… twice… attempting to adjust to unfamiliar surroundings. Once the woman’s vision was cleared, dark soot and jade-colored foliage filled her vision. She was positioned on her stomach with her nose dangerously close to a shrub that was sprouting round, red… what were they called? Dark brows furrowed close together, creating vertical wrinkles between them. Why couldn’t she remember what they were called? Although unable to conceptualize the object in front of her, the woman knew what they were. She just knew.

The woman laid on the ground, unmoving, as time ticked by. An uncanny silence impregnated the air only to be interrupted by the rhythmic hooting of a distant owl. Three hoots had echoed and disappeared; three minutes had passed. Eventually, the woman began to move. First, it was her hand farthest away from the shrub. With great caution, her palm smoothed out the ground below. The soot was coldβ€”maybe dampβ€”from some unknown source. The ground acted as a conductor, siphoning the heat from the woman’s body.

β€œHow do I know that?” Using her forearms as leverage, the woman finally lifted off the ground. A shooting pain jolted from the back of her neck down into her shoulder as she straightened her neck. The poor muscle must have been in that uncomfortable position for much too long. The woman gazed around in a half attempt to stretch out her neck and the other half to become familiar with her environment. The last few rays of dim sunlight peered through nature made awnings of greenery and casted a blanket of an eerie tint of tangerine and amethyst; evidence of the creeping night.

Using the last bit of light, the woman glanced down at her clothes. Fashionable, black jogger pants and a white plain crop top hidden under an olive-green athletic jacket. She adjusted herself so she was sitting on her behind and stretched out her legs in front of her, pointing her matching sporty shoes towards the bleakness of the forest. At this point, all the woman could do was observe; observe her clothes, the deformed roots weaving in and out of the soil, and the numerous bodies of others sprawled amongst the clearing. Everything was all too strange. Her mind was clouded and…empty. It was a blank slate. No matter how hard the woman concentrated, no memories sprouted.

Closing her eyes, she pinched her thumb and pointer finger on the bridge of her nose. β€œWhy can’t I…remember anything. What is my name?” After a passing moment, she opened her eyes and glimpsed at the shrub next to her. Rowan berries. The letters flashed in her mind like a film. Rowan; she dubbed herself Rowan. The woman now named Rowan moved as if she was about to stand, but something in her pocket stabbed at her skin through her pant fabric. She relaxed again, pulling a single card from her pocket. Her thumb traced the words of the card that read The World.

The world.jpg

Did this mean anything? Placing the card between her pointer and middle finger, she flipped the card over. Instantly, her breath hitched in the bottom of her throat.

SINNED.pngSinned. She was a sinner. The beat of her heart increased to an uncomfortable rate. Rowan was sure the others would hear the hammer attempting to burst through her chest. A sweat-drenched palm crumbled the delicate card and her arm lifted and recoiled backward like she was about to throw the card into the nothingness of the forest. Just as she was about to discard it, something stopped her; an invisible force that crept in her mind and told her it would be a mistake. So, she placed the damaged card back into the pocket she found it in and began to pat herself down.

In the opposite pocket was an object. For a moment, she debated if it was worth even pulling it out. With a deep inhale, Rowan reached two fingers in and pulled out a small, black, cylinder object with a metal clip on the top. Her eyes narrowed to slits as she rolled it between her thumb and pointer. Then, she clicked the button on top and a bright, LED light illuminated from the opposite end. "I knew that would happen." But how? It was like she had done it before so many times in the past. A distant muscle memory and a clue into her past life. With more questions than answers, Rowan stuck the penlight safely back into its home.

A soothing voice piqued her attention and her amber eyes locked onto a petite woman making her way over to her. Long, turquoise hair adorned the woman’s soft facial features, but what truly stood out was the woman’s striking crimson eyes. She followed her movements as the woman leaned down to her level. The words escaping the stranger’s mouth heaved Rowan out of her stupor.

β€œI…I’m okay,” She hadn’t examined herself, but no significant pain taunted her body. β€œI’m not sure where we are either. I’ve never been here.” Although her mind was blank, she was sure of that; the forest held no familiarity with the woman. β€œI can’t remember anything.” The words came out rushed. Panic was beginning to set in once again. This wasn’t normal, she was certain of that.

Rowan stood up abruptly, casting glances around the other bodies before landing on the turquoise-haired woman. β€œMaybe we should make sure they’re okay? Maybe they will have more insight into what is going on?” Two hands nervously rubbed at each other as Rowan eyed the woman suspiciously. Did she receive the same card as her? Did all of them receive some type of card or was she the only sinner amongst the group? It was a tidbit she would keep to herself for now.

β€œYou are exactly where you need to be.”

Her lashes fluttered open, and she was confused.

Where was she?

Amber irises went to the ground, where she expected to see dirt, but she was surprised by water. Her eyes flickered around - water, water, water. She was somehow above the source, with no land in sight. Just the sky above, and the waters below.

It was quite breathtaking.

Was this a dream?

She couldn’t float - at least, she thought she couldn’t float - so she knew this had to be some sort of illusion. For some reason, she found herself staring into the depths below instead of the sky above, at the beautiful sun; something had caught her eye within the waters. Or was it someone, whose eyes had caught hers?

Whatever it was, it was so far from the surface, she could only see into its eyes. But as they continued to stare at one another, it seemed to grew bolder as it slowly swam up. Finally it came up from the water, tilting its head as it didn’t break their gaze as it spoke aloud to her.

β€œYou are exactly where you need to be.”

Her breath hitched. It was beautiful.

It raised its arms to gently grasp her legs and before she could explain to the being that she couldn’t fly, and had no idea that she could even float,

She saw the fangs, and was already being pulled in.

She struggled against its grip, but she wasn’t strong enough. The being dragged her downward effortlessly, it seemed, and she felt powerless, looking back up at the sky that she’d neglected earlier, at the sun that was slowly fading from her sights, as everything slowly became hazy as she began to take water into her lungs, into her brain, her head felt so dizzy, but once again she heard from the being’s lips,

β€œYou are exactly where you need to be--”

And then, she woke up once more, coughing, trying to take in the air she’d felt she was missing.

It was just a bad dream after all.

The girl still felt shaky, but it felt even worse from moving so quickly out of sleep. She struggled to place herself instead of taking a moment to breathe properly, something she regretted not even a moment later as she began to feel queasy.

One of the only things she could remember was her name. Solana. Sol. Sol felt right; her full name left a slightly bitter taste in her mouth, and she had no idea why.

She knew for a fact, however, that she wasn’t where she was supposed to be.

Whatever her dream had meant by that phrase, it wasn’t right. She was missing something, something big. But she couldn’t place it, couldn’t place anything.

Sol sucked in a breath at how utterly useless she felt at the moment and began to stand up, before her eyes snapped to a card that slowly twirled off her person and to the ground. She leaned down to grab the card, a pang of energy hitting her heart as she viewed the back of the card first, rather than the front.

tarot-back-jpg.553091

β€œUh.”

A sinner?

Where am I?

Sol flipped the card over, viewing the front.

19-sun-meaning-rider-waite-tarot-major-arcana_large.jpg

The Sun.

The eyes seemed to pierce her, and for a second, she was right back in her nightmare.

She was drawn from her thoughts by a woman, running over to another person in their vicinity. How thoughtful, she mused for a second, before wondering why she herself wasn’t being helpful like she was.

She was forgetting something.

But she couldn’t figure it out, now. She finally started feeling better, after her quick movements earlier. She had to help those around her that she could.

Sol placed the card in her pocket as she listened to one of the girls near her whisper things to herself. She sounded really smart, but since it was to herself, Sol decided to not comment outright on it. She could ask her another time, maybe.

”I'm not too sure of where we are, either...but are you all okay? Is anyone hurt?”

She spoke to those who were awake, who had said they had no idea where they were. Come to think of it, she had been displaced from wherever she was meant to be since her nightmare. She felt herself yearning slightly, for something different. Wherever or whatever this was, it wasn’t the way it should be.

They were definitely all in the wrong places.

Sol didn’t like it, one bit.

All the muscles in his body tightened ever so slowly until his breath snapped like a twig under foot. He gasped, and fumbled onto his back, greeted only by dirt and mud. Not an ideal awakening and now he was caked in muck. Just what was he wearing? Not the kind of attire you wear for sleeping; that was for sure. This was no place for resting, yet he was here. The air tasted foul, but it was his mouth that was to blame. It was dry and his lips chapped. His fingers quivered, but he held them into a firm fist. It was pale in part of the cold which danced along his body. The wind wasn't considerably chilly, yet with it came unease. It felt like a whisper across ones' ear that left them no other choice but to listen. Unsettling. But apart from the reverberating soreness in his tissue, he seemed unharmed. No misplaced scratches or bruises. Just an incessant buzzing in his head that made his vision uneasy. He made an attempt to rest his palm up against his forehead, but was greeted halfway by a pair of glasses.

"[div class="gradFortune"]Shit,[/div]" he muttered.

The place he had touched was now littered in fingerprints making it impractical to see through. What kind of idiot was he to forget he was wearing glasses? It was a harmless reprimand, but the thought brought immediate discomfort. He didn't actually know the answer. It wasn't just about the glasses. He had forgotten everything about himself. His name, his past, his interestsβ€”he had forgotten it all. Naturally that meant he had no idea where he was, and that scared him. He wasn't about to capsize so quickly though. It took a few deep breaths but he got a handle on himself. This was bad. The possibilities could be endless as he had no method of narrowing them down. He wasn't even entirely sure he could confidently name the year. His sense of time was all jumbled, and the dark didn't help.

He rubbed away at his glasses the best he could, but only managed to smudge it more. How inconvenient. If he had any sense at all, then there must've been a cleaning cloth somewhere on his person. Thus began a desperate, somewhat frustrated pat-down. What he found, however, was something far more conspicuous. Amidst his pockets was a single card.

"[div class="gradFortune"]The hell...?[/div]"

Not quite sure what to make of it he turned it over.

Ecvo6WA.png

What kind if nonsense was this? He wasn't about to be shaken by some random words. Though the simple fact that he was in possession of such an oddity did merit a level of concern. There was no way he would casually carry around something like this. Someone must've planted it. Which in turn meant this whole situation was no accident. He must've been drugged for some sick concept of revenge or something, but for what? His thoughts were snowballing out of control. Had it not been for a sudden voice, he would have torn the thing up and been done with it. For the first time he realized he wasn't alone out here. He had been so caught up with the incongruences in his memory that he failed to observe his surroundings. His dirtied glasses didn't help either. One thing was for sure though: he was far from alone. Just how many people were there? And so diverse too. This complicated things even more. Would there be no end to the questions?

Before he knew it he had slid the card back into his pocket, almost instinctively. From the sound of it, at least a few of the others were clueless as well. Even so, he wasn't too keen on showing off potentially condemning information. It wasn't that he trusted the card to begin with, but it was a clue. The particular contents, specifically the back, could make others wary of trusting him if they chose to buy into weightless words. One of them being the culprit wasn't entirely out of the question either. For now though, he would play along.

MONOTHE HANGED MANInhale.
Exhale.

His chest rose and fell slowly, a lethargic rhythm. His blinking followed that silent rhythm.

Inhale.
Exhale.

A canopy overhead filtered straggling rays of light. Soil rested against his fingertips. Nature surrounded him.

Inhale.
Exhale.

Thoughts. Consciousness. Was he experiencing such? Who, what, where, when, why, how. Words and numbers. Concepts.

Inhale.
Ex-

WHO AM I?

The young man jerked into a sitting position, a violent and rasping cough escaping his lips. One hand braced against the dirt while the other clutched against his chest, the rhythm of its rising and falling now energetic and frenzied. His piercing green eyes frantically darted around, taking in his surroundings; people lay scattered haphazardly around him, in various stages of consciousness. Trees surrounded them, leaves overhead serving as a ceiling for the humans that now resided there. His breath escaped in strangled gasps as he scrambled to his feet, grains of soil scattering in his wake.

He looked down at himself, taking in his attire. Plain blacks and whites and greys were what coloured the clothes draped over his thin frame, most notably the lengthy light grey jacket with decorative fur (was that real? He couldn't tell) and the black sash tied around his waist. He blinked and his hands were outstretched before him, his eyes scanning the thin digits and the pale, flawless skin. The haze of his mind began to clear, thoughts forming out of it.

Who am I? Where am... is this amnesia? Retrograde? I should have paid more attention to... I can't remember. What is this?

His frenzied thoughts slowly began to slow, his breathing relaxing along with it. He closed his eyes tight for several seconds, and when they next opened, they glimmered with determination.

Panicking won't help me in this situation. First order of business - identification.

Those thin digits now reached up to his face and ran over it, testing what they found. They told the young man of his thin nose and sharp features, slightly hollowed cheeks free of facial hair, lengthy black hair. His vision also noted the white streak in his hair, as the locks fell in front of those bright green eyes.

Blacks, whites, and greys.

Monochrome, monotone, mono.

Mono?

Mono.

That moniker will do. For now.

The newly Christened Mono nodded slowly in confirmation to himself as his hands began patting down his self, still searching for any sort of identification to at least hint at who he really was. His hand instead found a card, tucked away in the pocket of his jacket.

1552979072993.png

When it was extracted, the card was upside down. Mono blinked once, twice, and felt no desire to rotate it to its upright position. He instead flipped the card around, and his eyes narrowed.

1552979204431.png

Sinned? Sacrifice?

Mono scoffed as he slipped the card back into his jacket pocket, shaking his head slowly. His gaze went back to observing the other people in the same boat as him. Whatever had happened to his memories and to the people around him, it was probably for a reason.

The newborn couldn't suppress his curiosity.

[div class=fyuri04headerleft]The Star[/div]
[div class=fyuri04boxleft]Smackdab in the middle of a desolate forest laid a man of impressive size; both in length and girth. The man was indeed tall, standing at six-foot-three even in a horizontal position and weighing well above healthy poundage. His cream-colored left hand, adorned with multiple freckles, draped lazily over his bulging stomach. The appendage rose and fell steadily with his abdomen at a steady pace. The man was blissfully unaware of the preternatural environment encasing him in the clearing amongst others. A heavy nasal sound escaped between his slightly parted and chapped lips that drowned out the distant hooting of an owl.

A small trickle of drool dribbled down the side of his mouth, eliciting his right hand to lazily wipe the liquid away. Instead of dropping his hand back to his side, he reached out directly to the side of him and eagerly searched for the water that was always placed on his nightstand. His hand patted the area multiple times before it registered in his mind; his nightstand was a smooth, hard, and wooden surface but his palm was rubbing against a soft, unevenly textured material.

The man’s emerald color eyes finally peaked open. β€œAh, damn! What the hell.” His arm promptly protected his still-adjusting eyes to the sunlight that penetrated through the greenery. This wasn’t right. More cautiously this time, he removed his arm and let his eyes adjust to his surroundings. Well, he certainly wasn’t in Kansas anymore… whatever the hell that means. He used his elbows to prop himself up and immediately glanced around. Why was he in a forest and why were there people around? None of their faces registered in his mind.

In fact, nothing registered in his mind. His fingers raked through his fiery red hair as he tried to recall his life before waking up. β€œDamn, I can’t remember nothin’. I can’t even remember my own name.” The words came out just as he looked down at his protruding stomach. Chubs, Chubs, Chubs. The demeaning nickname chanted in his mind in various teasing tones. β€œI guess Chubs it is, then.”

The man now newly dubbed as Chubs scratched at the sliver of the bare stomach that peaked through his stained white shirt. He began to pat himself down, hoping for a clue as to what was going on. His hands moved to his faded jeans first; the left side was empty but the right side held a cylinder object within it. Chubs nimbly removed it to reveal a bottle of half used Tapatio. "Oh man, I'll need that later." With a lopsided grin, he safely tucked the goods back into the pocket and continued to move upward. When he reached his touristy green button up, a square item was tucked away in the shirt’s single pocket. He pulled out the item and was face-to-face with a card.

β€œHmm, what’s this?

Star.jpg

He flipped the card over.

SINNED.png

Chubs face remained stoic at the ominous message displayed on the card’s backside. He stared at it for a long moment before letting out a burst of booming laughter. Clearly, this was an elaborate joke. Him? A sinner? He didn’t believe it. At the tail end of his laughing fit, he tucked the card back into its original home. The card may be a joke, but his irritating dry throat was not. He attempted to clear his throat in hopes of relieving the gnawing sensation to no avail. Well, sitting on his ass would do no good, so he slowly stood up and headed towards the small group of already awake people. His right knee buckled during his first step, but he managed to regain his balance before heading over. From what he could hear, none of them had any idea of what was going on. β€œHey!” He commanded their attention with a friendly greeting. β€œDid we all get a lil too drunk last night or what? Where am I? I can’t even remember who I am. How weird is that?” How he could remember nothing but somehow knew drinking and alcohol was a thing was beyond his cognition. Chub’s voice even held an airy feel to it with a slight hint of laughter. He clearly had no idea what was to come.

[div class=textbox]"You're finally in your safe place."

Finally being able to open her eyes she looked around as it seemed to be she was floating in the ocean.

"Why am I here? When did I get here? Who am I?"

Questions where the only thing that appeared in her head unable to move she continued to float until being faced by a giant black figure she's never seen before. He eyes opened wide as she started to panic, due to panicing she was drowning struggling trying to move but unable to.

"You're finally in your safe place."

What is this "thing" trying to tell her, before she was even able to speak a bright flash blinded her.

Breathing heavily from the shock she opened her eyes now she was finally out of the dream, or nightmare?

Looking straight up she could see light flashing on her face that seem to creep past the shield of leaves. What did she just witnessed? Why did she have nothing but questions in here headed. Curling her leg so her knee points upward she was shocked to finally be able to move. Sitting up she caught her breathe sinking in what just happened to her. Raising her pale arms in front of her she looked at the palm of her hands and released a sigh. Something didn't feel right as she doesn't even remember who she was and what was her purpose of being here. She then noticed a strange object that caught her eye it was rested on her lap and it had some weird writings on it.
1553045357552-png.553674

"You have been brought here because you have sinned"

"Sinned!? What did I do?!"

Reading the card some more it had something that made her skin crawl. It made her feel uneasy with the environment she was in.

"Now teach me the meaning of SACRIFICE"

Her eyes focusing on the worth sacrifice her face could reflect the emotion of fear, where was she and why is she here!? What did she do!? What sin does she have and why is this happening.
1553056456870.png
Though due to interest she slowly flipped the card over to see as the image wasn't so bad as what she thought was going to be. She thought it was going to be something else as terrifying as the back part. The image was a woman gently stroking a lion on its forehead and jaw. The women was beautiful so it would make sense that she was able to calm a beast of such size.

"What does this card mean?"

Looking up from the card she noticed others were around her, and someone was laying right next to her.

"Who is this person laying by me?"

Reaching towards the person laying by her it felt as if she was stopped mid motion. The person's hand had grabbed her wrist, she could fill chills down her spine and her hair jumped. Almost letting a scream out she covered her mouth looking at the person. It looked at the person was dead, but how was this person able to grab her wrist if they were dead?

"Are you okay?" She felt it was right to ask if the person was alright it seemed everyone looked a little uneasy or at least the ones that woke up.[/div][/div][/div][div class=credit]credits @RI.a[/div][div class=overlay]Rose[/div][div class=tags]Location?

[div class=textbox]WAKE YOU'RE HERE, *** ******, WELCOME!

What'd you say?

Wake You're here, *** *******, WELCOME!

Why does it sound like your cutting off?

You will soon learn your purpose open your eyes *** *******

I see...

Laying there he could feel the wind brush against him as it felt like he was outside of some sort, not opening his eyes due to liking it being dark and blinded from what he might see he smirked a bit. A leaf fell on his chest and it changed his smirk to a straight face of irritation, feeling a hand come towards him he extended his arm and grabbed onto it, not knowing where he grabbed he just know his hand was latched on whatever he grabbed.

"Are you okay?"

He finally opened his eyes seeing the tree's above him shake a bit from the wind and the air felt different, it didn't feel right for some reason. Tilting his head to see what he grabbed onto it was a girl's arm he eyed her then looking back up releasing a sigh.

"Please don't, and I would hope I'm okay."

Letting go of the girl's arm he sat up and stretched, though he grabbed his head from sudden pain, what was this pain coming from? Why did it feel like his mind was blank with no answers. He gripped his head trying to think where he was at and it didn't help him as he couldn't have any past thoughts.

"Fi-" He stopped mid sentenced as something dangled from his neck. It had a weird green gem hanging at the bottom and it shined off from the light reflecting. Being stuck on it from it having no trace of memory why he was wearing something so opposite form the... clothes he was wearing.

Right, all black it would seem he was wearing with a white under shirt.

Still feeling it was that dream from the voice telling him he was here he punched himself in the face. Feeling real pain didn't make him wake up again it just hurt a bit.

"So this is real..."

Slowly standing to his feet he looked around noticing everyone else then the blonde headed girl. Something about everyone being here in this forest didn't feel right, and he was trying to figure out what exactly was going on.

"Who am I?" He asked himself trying to see if he could think again.

Still looking at the girl she looked scared from just looking at him his eyes studied her from head to toe. Like the neckless he wondered if there was anything else he had, he began patting himself down and felt something in his left back pocket, reaching back there he grabbed a card pulling it out. What he saw was a black background with words on the back.

1553045357552-png.553674

"You have been brought here because you have sinned."

Something about that quote made him smile a bit and continued to read seeing that it told him to teach whoever the meaning of Sacrifice.

"To kill huh?"

Flipping the card over he noticed something interesting it was a picture that put a smirk on his face again. A skeleton dressed in black armour, riding a white horse. What of the odds the skeleton was dressed in black while he who was scanning the card was in all black as well with white under shirt.

TEMPERANCE

His eyes slowly peel open, allowing orange dusklight to spill in. His limbs were sprawled haphazardly across the brown and green forest ground, and his breath came out in deep slow gasps. His braids were scattered and splayed beneath his head. The spicy scent of a flower tickled his nostrils and woke him from his deep slumber. Slumber? Sleep? Why was he sleeping. The long conjoined petals of the wild flower rested against his mouth. It's presence bringing a word to his mind. Ada. The word sounded oddly familiar. But it wasn't his name. What was his name? What exactly the hell was going on?

He jolts upwards, dust scattering off his body. The Ada flower flies off him and hair flies forward. He could see the wilderness clearly, he could smell the odd air, he could taste his saliva and he could feel the wind against his skin. He was. And he couldn't remember why, not to talk of who. His head was an endless mess of questions that lead to more and ended in dead ends. In frustration, he clenches his fist, feeling the sharp edges of a card dig into his skin. He unfolds the crumbled paper in his right hand.

Temperance. Moderation. Those words were similar, but what did it mean. Why was this given to him. Is this some kind of gift? It's a nice looking card, he'd give them that. Instinctively, he turns it around.

"S-Sacrifice?" He says, inadvertently out loud. He almost jumps at his own voice. He card had creases from when he'd crumpled it, but the words were clear as day. He looks down and away from the card. The wild flower lay sprawled on the ground, like he was during his awakening. Ada . As good a name as any.

Somewhere amidst the grass laid a girl who was warm. Her skin was cold, yet there was warmth within her. She knew not from where or what but only that this feeling would not leave her. There was no proof or reason for this belief, but she knew it must be true. And yet, this subtle comforting warmth did not last. It grew, and it grew, and it grew until it embraced her entire body. It was so lovely, and shielded her from the unknown that awaited her in the waking world. Though as it grew so too did the heat and it became less and less calming. It birthed a scalding, searing feeling that was ingrained so deeply not even the sharpest of claws could dig it out. It simply existed beyond.

Akin to fire, this feeling consumed everything it touched, and left her body writhing for air. She squirmed, and she twisted but she could not shake it off. She couldn't breathe, and soon a scream escaped her.

With the silence of her mind shattered, she awoke, and the warmth vanished. It was rather cold out at this time of nightβ€”out here in middle of a forest. Her body shook; the echo of the ordeal within herself still taking its toll. It had hurt to scream as such, and her eyes were damp with unease. It was not apparent to her, but a smile remained planted on her delicate face, small and timid. It had already dawned on her that she had no idea where she was or who she was. Though it may not have sunk in properly, as she made no additional effort. She simply sat and smiled.

This place was so foreign to her. A vast landscape of trees basked in the dark sky. It told her no tales or rumors, none that she could understand. It simply acted as a lid for the view. Everything was contained within it. There was no escaping the sky. It was with you wherever you went, and in a way it soothed her. It may have been unfamiliar at this moment, but there was only one sky. She may not remember now, but this likely wouldn't be the first time she set her eyes on it. She wondered what color it had been the last time she saw it. The one right now left a lot to be desired. It felt so dreary.

Her attention returned to herself. These clothes of hers were not fit for the environment she was in, cute perhaps, but not convenient. She grabbed a hold of one end and prepared to shorten it, but the movement brought her attention to her hands. Both were gloved, but there was an uncertain discomfort in her left. There was hesitation, but she carefully slipped it off. As she did, an object slipped out onto the ground:

Ecvo6WA.png

Her eyes were drawn to the bold word, "[div class="gradLove"]Sa-cri-fice?[/div]"

She couldn't help but stifle a giggle. Who would write such an ominous line like that behind a red background? And the font emphasizing "sacrifice" too? There was no way she could take something like that seriously. It was way too silly. She would leave the card be. It didn't interest her at all, unlike the collection of people around her. What an odd assortment for an odd gathering. She so very much wanted to introduce herself. Though, it would be a rather light introductionβ€”about as light as her head. She had tried to stand up and quickly stumbled back down. The rush had made her a bit dizzy, and a suffocating feeling returned to her core.

MONOTHE HANGED MANWell, wasn't this a party?

Mono kept silent as he observed the rousing people around him. He silently mouthed the name he had chosen for himself, rolling it around his mouth. Tasting it, getting a feel for it.

It felt good.

He decided to conduct a more thorough search of his person while everyone else came to, ignoring those that were already awake and speaking to each other. No reason to involve himself in social interaction when unnecessary. His thin hands began to comb through his clothes again even as he considered whether or not his hands could be considered those of a pianist. Probably, was his conclusion.

Absolutely pointless observation. He silently berated himself for wasting the time of his brain's synapses.

A thin eyebrow arched as his fingers reached into the pocket of his pants, brushing against what felt like metal and plastic. Two separate objects. He enclosed his fingers into a fist and extracted both objects, uncurling his fingers to unveil what he'd unearthed.

A coin and a pen, Β₯100 and an empty ballpoint.

... talk about disappointing.

He slipped the two objects back into the pocket he'd drawn them from, ignoring the subtle yet urgent feeling that they were of great value to him. He continued to pat himself down, eventually noticing what felt like paper tucked between the sash and his waist. He extracted it without hesitation, eyes narrowing.

A picture of a girl, monochrome and grainy. His eyes systematically scanned her grinning face the ocean behind her, taking in the details. He barely noticed his free hand coming up to curl into a fist against his chest, but he did notice the ache that stemmed from where the fist rested. The feeling didn't go away, quickening his breath. More questions than answers had been raised.

Who are y-

A scream cut through the air. He tucked the photo away without a second thought, ignoring the ache in his chest as he glanced over at the girl responsible for the scream. She looked young, younger than he thought he was in any case. Not that he was exactly sure how young he... nevermind. His gaze flicked away from the girl as she too roused from her slumber. The urge to take the coin or pen in hand was overwhelming.

His hand reached into his pants pocket, the coin fitting comfortably between his index and middle finger. His fingers moved on their own, re-positioning the coin, a metallic ding ringing through the clearing as his thumb flipped the coin into the air. It was caught easily, then regarded with suspicion. That suspicion only increased as he began rolling the coin between his fingers. Clearly there was a reason the coin appeared so dull and well worn.

He went back to flipping the coin when his stupor was broken by the voice of the same girl that had screamed before, this time in a plea for help. Glancing over at her, the obvious conclusion was that she needed help to stand up. Perhaps some mental side effect of the amnesia?

The coin continued to flip even as his gaze no longer focused on it and he slowly crossed the short distance between himself and the younger girl. He stopped beside her and looked down at her, fixing his piercing green eyes on her before extending his left hand towards her in an invitation. The coin didn't stop flipping.

Mono didn't say a word.

Learning that she was slow to wake was an...interesting experience. In that quiet moment before everything comes rushing at you once you wake, the young woman simply enjoyed the comfort of the silence. While the ground she was laying on was rough, the layer of grass a very thin cushion, she found herself enjoying the earthy smell that invaded her nose. It was almost as if it was trying to offer comfort before something awful happened.

It was the random thought that sounded so achingly familiar that finally roused her from her doze. With a soft groan as she moved her arms under her upper body, she pushed herself into a somewhat comfortable sitting position. Lifting one hand to gently rub at her eyes and head in an attempt to clear the fog that seemed to envelop her entire being, she was startled when something fell out of her other sleeve.

"What...?" she questioned softly to herself. She made to pick up the item only to be distracted by the voices nearby finally registering in her mind.

She swallowed, eyes going wide at the large group before her. What...what was going on? Why were all these people here? Why was she here?

As the questions without answers continued to run rampant through her mind, her still large eyes continued to track the movements of those before her. Until....it hit her.

"Who...who am...I?" her words were soft in tone and weak in strength. Despite having just been asleep for what she would assume to be a lengthy amount of time given the amount of people in the immediate area, all she could feel was an overwhelming sense of fatigue. Her hands, moving on instinct alone, began to clench around the fabric of her pants, only to be met with resistance. Confused she looked down, only to remember the item that had fallen from her sleeve. Gingerly she picked it up, frowning as she took in the image.

'The...Moon?' she thought. What did the moon have to do with anything? What did anything on this card have to do with the moon. She narrowed her eyes as she brought the card closer to her face, trying to inspect every detail she could. Well....she could see how some of the images were connected. A dog and wolf howling at the moon. But that still didn't answer her question. What did any of this mean? What exactly was going on? Flipping over the back of the card in a last attempt to find any answers, she gasped.

She felt tears begin to gather in her eyes. What did this mean, what was she doing here?! Still sitting where she woke, the young woman fitfully glanced around the area, seeing all the others seemingly trapped as well.

She didn't know where it was...but all she wanted to do was go home.

By the dense wood, a body lay still. The face was pale as wax in the shade and the hair, entangled in the grass, bloomed like red anemones. There seemed to be a hollowness to this body's limbs, something about the way they sank into the underbrush that felt... false. They were almost too light to be of flesh and bone. But such an impression must have been a mere trick of the evening light for, slowly, the body's eyes twitched open and that tranquil mask contorted into a look of worn misery.

There are insects crawling down here. I can feel them slipping through my clothing.

This observation came immediately. Only afterwards did he really grow cognizant of the prickling along his neck, his wrists, and his ankles that must have given rise to this thought. Little insect feet brushing against his skin. Little barbed hairs digging deep. A great shudder of revulsion ran through him, but his body felt all too heavy to move. He was tempted to remain there, buried beneath the scent of wet earth and rotting leaves.

The scent of filth.

Seized by the violence of this thought, the man jolted upright. 'Filth'. The word induced a strange sensation of rawness, as if every cell of his was being scored open and inverted, forced to take in the minutest molecular detail. The cold dirt beneath his palms, the wind breathing warm down his neck, even the chafing of his clothing against his skin… All of these sank in his being, churning together into one pitch-black mass. His stomach revolted; he’d had enough. But still, his senses kept pulling in more for him to digest. The man hunched down and waited for his nausea to pass.

Presently, as he began to feel a bit better, he grew aware of the grass stalks tickling his wrists.

So they weren’t insects.

And he was wearing gloves. They were dirty now. He frowned. These had to be washed, everything on him had to be washed, but -

He looked around, noting the trees and the wild plant growth. This was a forest. An unnamed forest… The notion struck fear in his heart, but he could not explain why he expected forests to be named or why it mattered to him either way. In fact, he realized he could not explain much of anything: why he was here, why he was dressed like this, who he was even.

Why had he not noticed his lack of memories immediately? Perhaps this was all a dream and some subconscious part of him knew… This theory would explain his slowness to react - as well as the strange shapes moving in the distance.

His attention grew fixed upon those strange shapes rustling through the grass. Under the dying light of day, some looked vaguely human while others seemed to take on extra appendages. They chattered and cried out in strange tongues, but at times he felt as if he could comprehend what they were saying. β€˜Help,’ he heard one utter.

Rather than a dream, this was a nightmare.

Tense, he rose to a crouch and began shuffling backwards – and promptly stumbled over a tree root. His blazer fell open and he caught sight of a glint of silver in his inner pocket. It felt… familiar… important. He withdrew the object – he could see now that it was a beautiful engraved pen – and was just about to inspect it when something fluttered to the ground, a card of some kind.

The man picked it up by a corner and slowly examined it under what little light of day remained.

The Tower. When it came to cards like these, they usually came in a deck. Why was he only carrying one? The image on it, too, seemed rife with ominous meaning. Two people were jumping from a tower engulfed in flames. No good fate awaited them, he thought. He could not conceive of any reason as to why he would carry such a thing. This persistent idea of meaning and lack of meaning: it was throwing a wrench into his theory of this being all a dream, he realized. After all, he was sure dreamers never asked why certain things happened.

He turned the card over.

tarot-back-jpg.553091

Sin. Sacrifice. Red. The color of blood.

Looking at the last streaks of red in the sky, he felt his head grow light. Everything was pulsing, buzzing, too life-like to be a dream. This wasn't a dream. So those shadows were people. Or real monsters? Something was terribly wrong. Wrong with him. His ears were ringing now and the earth began to spin faster and faster, in time with his thumping heart. Somebody was panting hard. Was he the one panting hard? His chest burned for air.

Breathe. Breathe. BREATHE!

This refrain felt familiar too. But the part of him that still recognized both the meaning and the lack of meaning of things knew it would do little to help.

Later he would question this thought, but in his post sleep haze, all he could recognize was that he woke up like he did on any other day. Like a switch was flipped, he woke up. His eyes snapped open while the rest of his body was slow to follow. He didn't mind. It gave him a moment to collect himself and remember where he was and what he needed to do for the day. Like clockwork his body began to move without his conscious thought, slowly moving into a sitting position and then a standing one, his arms raising high above his head in a stretch while he yawned and rolled his necks, working out the kinks from where he'd been sleeping.

Now somewhat awake, that was what caught his attention. Where had he been sleeping? He frowned, actually taking in his surroundings as his arms lowered to his sides, realizing he was in what he could deem as everyday clothing. He turned slightly, scanning the area around him, noticing that he was not alone, but surrounded by a large group of people, some still asleep and some waking up and questioning where they were.

It was that last part that made him furrow his brow in confusion. That was definitely a good question, seeing as he seemed to have been sleeping in the dirt - something that did not please him in the slightest. This did not seem like a normal situation. He wasn't pleased. His hands moved to rest on his hips when he brushed against a firm piece of card in his pocket. "Hm, now what is this?" he wondered aloud.

4.jpg

Despite the somewhat insane circumstances, the sight of the card with the label of 'Emperor' amused him, a smirk quickly overcoming his features. "Emperor, huh?" he chuckled. "I think I like the sound of that." he mused, flipping the card over.

tarot-back-jpg.553091

"A sinner huh...Well." he paused, shrugging to himself as he tucked the card back into his pocket. "Could be worse I guess." he thought. "Seeing as I don't recall how I arrived here and can't remember my own name, I guess I'll need to come up with a new one. Hm...what sounds good with Emperor...." he pondered, beginning to walk around, trying to see if any of the others who had already woken up seemed to know what was going on.

"L...Something with an L....Luke? No..." he frowned, letting out a frustrated sigh before snapping his fingers abruptly as it came to him. "Luca! There we go. Emperor Luca, I think it has a nice ring to it." he laughed quietly to himself, looking out at the others once again. He wondered what they were supposed to do now, seeing as almost everyone had woken up by now.

After all. You don't just drop a group of people into the middle of nowhere for no reason.

....Right?

The second to wake was a beautiful young woman. With long dark hair that was somehow…familiar. When amber and ruby eyes met Silque could feel a queer catch in her breath. It was as if, somehow, blurred behind the woman’s searching scrutiny and pale face there was another… one whom she could just almost rememberβ€”
And suddenly she felt a very strong impulse to cry. But it was a short feeling, roaring past like a wave at sea, soon lost and forgotten amidst a froth of other emotions.

β€œI’m glad you’re not hurt.” Genuine relief was present in the soft expression of her smile until, perhaps a bit slowly, she realized that her face was just a bit too close to that of this stranger's, causing the red of Silque's eyes to reflect down onto her cheeks. And then she found herself unable to meet the woman's gaze, her own naturally trailing down to the folds of fabric bunched around her knees. As if on instinct.

"I don't remember anything, either. But I think it's too early to panic. For one, we're not alone..."

Apparently not taking her advice, the woman suddenly stood up. Perhaps, Silque pondered, looking for a distraction from fear.

β€œMaybe we should make sure they’re okay? Maybe they will have more insight into what is going on?”

β€œGood idea.” She replied, understanding that maybe a distraction would be good for them both. She cautioned a glance upwards, not towards her companion but to observe those around them. Slowly they were waking up. All, she noted curiously, with a similar reaction. Confusion. Concern.

Following the dark-haired woman’s lead Silque finally returned to her feet, and in this she was not alone, despite a blonde haired man's attempts to tell everyone to be careful in doing so. Those who had awaken began to naturally gravitate towards one another, mumbling things non consequential and lacking any clues. Though just because they had nothing to say with words didn't mean that they didn't have anything to say. Silque was quiet but watchful, taking in the slight reactions of the people as they came to terms with the situation, the abnormality of it seemingly not lost on a single one. And they all copied each other in pulling out cards similar to the one that she had almost forgotten remained clutched in her hand. The word β€˜sacrifice’ on some of their lips.

So had they all gotten that portentous message? The one about them having sinned?

Though no one seemed to be paying attention, the woman's face darkened as she remembered those words, her breaths once again growing short as her grip around the card tightened. Someone who has sinned . . .

As if a lifeline to pull her from spiraling thoughts, her vacant eyes caught upon something away from the crowd, near where she had woken. The reflection of the last rays of light off a shining object on the ground. Her interest piqued, Silque momentarily forgot about helping the others, excusing herself with a dip of the head from the dark-haired woman and another, cute with short hair and dark skin, who had approached them. Instead she made her way towards the glitter in the grass, finding herself looking down at something that was definitely out of place. Small and white. Cut from the same fabric of the dress that hugged her light frame. Something that was hers.

She knelt down, picking up a clutch on a golden chain. It appeared, as with the rest of her clothing, to be of high quality, adorned with sparkling gems, tiny silk flowers, and white orbs which she knew to be pearls. An excitement rising in her chest, she opened it expectantly, her brain leaping through associations of purses with wallets and wallets with identities. But all she found inside were more mysteries and half-written messages from her former self. There was a smooth cylinder of sweet-smelling purple and a golden cylinder that, when opened, produced a soft pink substance that she instinctually ran across her lips. Habit. A rose-colored compact decorated with cartoon characters she could not name revealed a comb and mirror. Though it was only the smallest of portals, the glassy reflection at last showed her the face of the woman who was herself. Smooth skin. Eyes that seemed naturally gentle, or perhaps, tired. The fanciful characters on the compact were childish and yet...somehow produced a feeling of warmth missing amongst the forest's unfamiliar cold.

There was also a broken length of chain, the quality of which was in noticeable contrast to rest of the artifacts. It was silver but obviously only in surface, a cruder metal or rust showing in patches. And in the middle was a little bejeweled star, though some of those jewels were missing, revealing more tinny brown through their empty grooves. To anyone it was a piece of trash. And yet she had kept it in her bag, wrapped in silk and pearls like any treasure. Even if the woman who had placed it there existed no longer...it somehow seemed disrespectful to simply cast it aside. More promising a clue turned out to be yet more rubbish, this one a torn piece of paper of thick stock. The only word she could make out with any clarity, however, was "THEATER" and a series of garbled numbers and letters that, without the other half, had lost all meaning, leaving her more frustrated than fulfilled. And finally there was a case printed with flora and birds on one side with the other being a clear sheet that revealed a single plastic card. Blue with the letters ICOCA in bold silver font and yet another cutesy character, this time a...bird? No... A platypus.

The collection didn't tell her much, but it was something. With a short sigh she draped the chain of the purse over her arm, intending to make her way back to the group when a scream broke her thoughts and drew her into a run. The source was a small girl, dressed well like herself, but young. Too young to be in such a place... Silque's heart went out to her but a man with wild hair beat her to acting upon it. In any case, it seemed that her outcry was caused more by the shock of waking up than any immediate danger. Well, that was optimistically assuming that the current predicament didn't count as such.

All in all there were...a surprising amount of people in the clearing. And something about them was uniquely...off, though Silque, lacking the ability to apply context, couldn't necessarily say what. Only that it was...different, she supposed. Different from the face she had observed in the mirror. And all these different people, it could be reasoned, had woken up in a foreign forest without memories and with only those strange playing cards as clue. Some were taking it better than others. Some quiet. Some worrisomely so. Some trying their best to make sense of what was going on. And one in particular...

β€œEmperor Luca, I think it has a nice ring to it.”

The man who had spoken was quite tall and had features that for some reason immediately struck her as being like… a prince. A prince. A prince. A prince. Somehow the word spun on cycle over and over again in her head…

β€œEmperor? You mean like this?”

Again, as if obeying some deep instinct, Silque presented the card she had woken up with in a very careful way, held between both her hands with the title β€˜EMPRESS’ showing face up, her own head bowed as she offered it. It was a very formal presentation, she both realized and somehow felt was important.

Emperor and Empress… shouldn’t that have some meaning? It was like fate drawing them together as a [ pair ]. Silque gazed up at the man, something dark and inscrutable clouding her eyes. Emperor and Empress. If she remembered right, that was kind of like a King and Queen. Or a [ prince ] and [ princess ] . . .

"Maybe we were meant to work together," she began quietly. Then, turning towards the portion of the group who had gathered. "Maybe we're all meant to work together. We could--"

β€œSorry, I don't remember making you leader?”

It seemed as if her words had drawn someone else's attention.

The last to wake was a disgruntled young man. Actually he had been woken, called by the soft murmurs of people (read: idiots) talking that had, against the background of forest quietude, fallen like a drill hammer upon his head. Though he tried to ignore it, it seemed as if whoever was invading his sleep was stubbornly refusing to shut up.

β€œThose dumbasses are really at it again,” he grumbled to himself, only half aware of what he was saying. And that was just the problem.

Wait. Dumbasses? Who...?

He couldn’t remember, exactly. Maybe because he was still half in a dream. Unfortunately, not a very pleasant one. It was like sitting too close to a fire, uncomfortably warm. The swirl of unintelligible voices and accompanying sounds of people mucking about blurring into the vision in a way that was making him nauseous. And to top it all off, there was a shrill scream.

β€œSeriously? Just what the hell is wrong with you!?”

At last he sat up, fully awake (and not by choice), something falling off his chest to the ground as he did so. He ignored it, his only objective to find whoever had decided to make such a god awful noise where someone was obviously asleep, when he realized… well, a lot of things. For one, he was not at all where one might reasonably expect to be obviously sleeping. No, instead he was outside on the cold, rocky ground. Gross. He hated the outdoors. Wait…why, exactly? But he was more annoyed at the presence of other people to overthink it.

There was a surprisingly large group of them, mostly, it appeared, milling about. They were strangers and, for the moment, seemed to be ignoring him (which was actually part of the problem). At least they didn't look hostile. But why a forest? And he was back to the earlier question. Why on Earth would he be in a forest at all, much less sleeping in one? Though, strangely, the sleep hadn’t been half bad (at least before these strangers had rudely woken him from it). He looked around him, noting the reason may be partially attributed to a thick beige sweater he had been unknowingly laying on. Well, at least whoever had dragged him out here had sense enough to try and make him comfortable. Of course his assumption was that he had been dragged, he thought as he picked up the sweater, shaking off the grass and dirt that had naturally attached themselves to the porous threads. There was no reality in which he would, of his own volition, choose to do something so asinine. But again…why was he so sure? He paused for a moment, staring at the sweater as he folded it over his lap. It was his…wasn’t it? Well, it was now. But that wasn’t the point. The point was that he couldn’t remember ever seeing it before. Though he also couldn’t remember not seeing it. It was a lack. Like a gap in his brain. He frowned. What was this, some kind of joke? A dream? A prank? He felt around the back side of his head, noting with some satisfaction the softness of the hair his fingers ran through as he searched for some kind of wound or bump. He somehow knew that most people who suffered this kind of memory lapse usually did so at the behest of some such injury. But other than the shape of a skull beneath skin there was nothing there.

His frown deepening, he finally got around to examining whatever it was that had fallen off him. It was… a card.

Sin? Sacrifice? Now this really was a joke. But if he were to take the words on the card at face value (something which he, obviously, would not), that would mean that he was…a sinner. Meaning he had done something. Something terrible. Unforgivable, even. So was this a punishment?
Perhaps.

But that couldn't be right. His mind (naturally) did not want to accept that he was capable of such a thing. As if his very soul was tuned to reject it.

I haven’t done anything wrong. Sinner or not… that I’m sure of.

Curious he turned the card over, expecting it to be blank. But that was far from the case.

_LKn4ngHxnkWDLxl0hJhCntIhC2uXQ_KZpRRO0utmpjqqIAqfUXeUuGm6LNg3WfUctRxhS3KzlvvdzWCL86vP1wNGxqiFxyWO56XP-ILzUqZS04j32yaDKuLR0axYoQVrEMXtGluSiB3zcN7cCcm6pqCt8ZXOf2CAQU5IYZIrU-knpP4rNTxRVcVe6aHjhngoScQcaGZXVotcdO9Q7lK47-6RMoX2pZDyZA0iQQ7dVm9Fwqai4kZ-uZDOJXt4HVhjjCyBpiP66SwiMEf2r4nSvL1A97Rgewq__URKxfHy4V4xIEd0vilFWpzDgkbpp5MZ-DpO_h-dpv7xHhF347kuyMPPRovilbM3LkpsGbYmcCQxXVQcFiH11L9FzVPi5QsrdTDmXGfwD3ogf6zW8T52Rqfo2FQ4GEx8u9eUmEQ7rbXu9BPsiHZaq747oyHVu95HHizHA-qCkE1HZMdMSas7b488bHnq5ZkQZ9DrQf-cyvLZU6kHfzJWHYIQptmXSwwClxqCSLfoKGA7TNMF6tbFW14ivOmiodJCe6xCujUnc64lejSlhGL_ZEfY1j-KjI8znf3t3XE6k9xEwpQOgRaCVldthOysu8vx9nM7vBfZny1yoqtHU-C=w690-h1158-no

On the other side was a drawing of a… well, to be honest he couldn’t tell whether it was a man or woman. Either way their dorky bowl cut was not doing them any favors. They were sitting in a chair between two pillars, a sword and scale in their hands. Overall quite a somber affair. And that feeling extended to the word written beneath.

JUSTICE.

The period made it even more final. Absolute.

He scoffed, something about that word striking him as particularly funny. Like the punchline to a pretty good joke he had forgotten the setup to. He yawned and flung the card behind him into the ether.

Well. Was that it, then? He was a sinner in a forest with a bunch of imbeciles? Though (he had to admit) he was taking it all with pretty good stride, the emotions were bound to catch up eventually. Something like...frustration, at being caught in such a ridiculous situation. Not knowing anything except what he could randomly grasp at. Being denied any access to the upper hand. And...disappointment. At himself, mainly. And...anger. Over having been brought here, against his will. Not to mention the rude awakening.

He dug his hands into his pockets, hoping to find a phone or wallet all the better to help him quickly get out of this dreary place. Instead he found… two curious and utterly unhelpful artifacts. One was a white cloth. Just… a plain white cloth. He might have assumed it to be some kind of handkerchief except that seemed like something a pansy would have and memory loss or not he knew he was no pansy. But as he was about to discard the thing he caught a very faint, somewhat sweet smell coming off of it. Curious, he held it closer to his nose. Yes…there was some pleasant scent there. But as he was no connoisseur of such, that meant little.

The other item was a small plastic bag filled with blue and white pill capsules. There was no writing or anything to indicate what exactly they might hold. It struck him that it might be emergency medication, though that didn't mean he was going to risk trying it out. It could also be poison for all he knew. Well, if he ever felt a sudden onset of dangerous symptoms it would be better than nothing, he supposed.

Shrugging he placed both items back, noting his clothing as he did so. Nothing unusual. Nice pants, a vest, a tie. On his hands, however, were a pair of black leather gloves. He hadn’t even noticed them, perhaps because wearing them was like second nature. And for some reason they made him feel…powerful. So he left them on.

All in all he could tell that whoever he was had both taste and good appearance. Of course he didn’t know for sure how he looked. It was just…something obvious. A thought so ubiquitous that even when all other thoughts had been squelched out it still remained. And why would he dispute it?

Well, it had been nice (read: pretty shit), he supposed, waking up in a forest with no memories and the company of what he guessed could be called people. But now it was time to go. With what was kind of an alarming amount of effort he picked himself off the forest floor. Maybe whatever had caused his memory loss had some sort of negative effect on his physical prowess as well. Though even as he stood that thought was shot down by a bullet of pain ringing through his right leg, giving him no other recourse than to flinch.

What the hell?

Maybe he had a weird crick due to sleeping on the ground. Ignoring it, he tied the sweater around himself and began to walk, pointedly, in the opposite direction of the rest.

The pain persisted. Dull, almost aching. As if it was something his body had been used to for a long time. A realization that fell inside him with a dull thud. Heavy, like waking up from a dream the morning after a bad day. But, of course, he had no idea why.

And then he tripped.

He had been so caught up in the anguish over his leg, perhaps trying to continue to hold onto the hope that he could just ignore it and it would go away, away like he wanted to be from this whole stupid situation and whoever the others were and just go back to...to what, exactly? That he had completely missed a body laying in the dirt.

Unceremoniously he fell on top of them.

β€œHey! Watch where you’reβ€”β€œ

He stopped midway, realizing that sentence had no logical end. After all, he was the one who had lost his footing. Though that fact did little to alleviate his annoyance. Muttering he picked himself up, seeing the perpetrator was a young man with hair that was much too red and a sallow face that looked as if it had seen a ghost.

β€œGeeze what’s up with you? Get up on the wrong side of the bed?” He smirked at his own joke before turning back towards the group, praying that no one saw his unsightly faux pas. Just because they were all strangers he didn't care about, it didn't mean that he didn't care about not looking bad in front of them. β€œNext time don’t lie on the floor when there’s other people walking about.” He crossed his arms defiantly, then, looking back at the man, uncrossed them. The proper thing to do, he supposed, would be to offer him a hand. One gloved hand to another, he noted with the slightest curiosity (though his, of course, were much nicer). It was such an easy thing... to extend one's arm. But halfway he left it lingering, like an incomplete thought. There was...something inside him. Something he obeyed. And the hand began to retract, closing in a fist by his side. He stiffly turned away. β€œSeriously, the ignorance of some people.” He continued muttering such things to himself as he once again walked with the sole purpose of getting away, dragging his leg behind him. Stupid, stupid leg. Though he had no history to attach to it, just that one slip-up alone was enough to get him to hate it. Making him look foolish in front of these idiots. Stupid stupid stupid.

His thoughts were already full of bitterness as he, unwittingly, approached the group. Just in time to catch the tail end of a white-clad woman’s words.

β€œMaybe we're all meant to work together. We could--”

β€œSorry, I don’t remember making you leader?” He snapped, almost instinctually, and only in the silence that followed realizing that perhaps it made for a less than ideal introduction as now the woman’s red eyes were upon him.

β€œI-I’m not.” He could tell she was surprised by the outburst. People…no…women…they were…so easy to read……

β€œYou’re not the one who screamed, are you?” Figuring that he may as well own his forward approach, he walked closer to her, his uneven gait eventually drawing him to gaze deep into her face. She was shorter than him, which he liked. And he especially liked when in response she bit her lip and shook her head. Unable to meet his accusatory gaze. Something about that stirred within him and he smiled.

β€œListen,” She took a breath, perhaps to compose herself, before speaking up, β€œI believe that we were brought here for a reason. It’s the same for all of us...right? We don’t know who or where we are? S-So I think that if we work togetherβ€” β€œ

β€œWork together?” He scoffed, leaning back to fold his arms. β€œWhy do I have any incentive to do that? For all I know you could be the one who kidnapped me and brought me here. The same goes for each of you.” He turned to side-eye anyone who might be near enough to listen. β€œUnless, of course, you’re lying. Whoever’s in on it would naturally have nothing to fear.”

β€œStop that. It’s counterproductive.”

β€œAnd what exactly are you trying to produce? Whatever. If we’ve been drugged it will wear off eventually. I just want to go home.”

β€œSo you think we’ve been drugged?”

β€œDrugged or concussed, and since there’s no sign of head injuryβ€” wait, I don’t have to explain myself to a kidnapper.” He made to walk away, after all, he never had any intention of dealing with the group in the first place. But the woman stopped him with the touch of a hand upon his arm. It was a small hand. Delicate, like porcelain. Something you could easily break. And gloved. In white. Was that a reoccurring theme here? Or was it just 'lucky' coincidence that he had found the only other people wearing them?

β€œWait." The word was unnecessary. But there was a challenge there. Or, more accurately, an assertion. Of authority. And he didn't like that one bit. "We should all stick together. You, too." She raised her voice as she let her fingers finally fall from his skin, trying to encourage those who hadn't yet joined the group to do so. "We should at least introduce ourselves.”

β€œA great lot that will do among a bunch of amnesiacs." What...was this, exactly? Though the mere existence of the group, of this whole strange fucked up scenario, was by itself, irritating, that didn't explain the knot of the familiar feeling boiling inside of him. The woman, reasonably, hadn't done anything outwardly wrong. And yet... he hated her. "Look, if anyone’s gonna lead us it should at least be someone who can look at the person they're talking to and get through a sentence without stumbling over her words.”

β€œI believe I can speak well enough.” This time she held his gaze. Though her voice was quiet and soft, as inconsequential as a cloud, it was outlined by a firmness that he couldn't crack. A palpable tension sparked in the air between them.

[div class=fyuri04boxleft]Waking in an unfamiliar clearing with the murk of the night engulfing the remaining fraction of light, it was only natural to be wary of the stranger before you and the others surrounding you, right? Rowan observed as the other woman stood, the stranger's height not quite reaching her own. Although Rowan did not know this woman (at least, that is what she assumes to be accurate), the honest relief she could sense from the woman's words allowed Rowan to unclench her wringing hands and drape them leisurely along her side.

What began as three bodies awakening in a clearing transformed into nearly everyone rising. The brunette creased her brows together, shallow wrinkles and an unnerved expression souring her otherwise attractive facial features. The others rousing painted the same affect of uncertainty and disturbance on their face. Of course, it could just be a stratagem on their end to outwit the innocent. The wheels in Rowan's mind twisted and turned unrelenting and the more she thought, the more her heart danced wildly in its cage.

Panic. Terror. Dread.

Heat rose to the surface of her porcelain skin, and the pounding of blood in her ear almost drowned out the spine-chilling scream from one of the others in the clearing. Almost. In fact, it centered her once more, most likely the opposite effect of what it was meant to do. Something snapped in Rowan's mind like a trigger, and her body was instinctively ready to act. It was a strange, distant feeling that felt familiar to her. Her left foot shifted to run towards the scream, but a man with unruly hair had beat her to it. She settled down once again. Now, more curious than ever, she wondered who she had been before waking up in this forest.

The turquoise-haired woman adjusted her attention towards someone else; a man who apparently had the matching card to hers. The display prompted Rowan to pluck the crumbled card from her pocket and examine it once more. It was clear that everyone in the clearing had received one, but why? Only creating more questions than answers, Rowan returned the card back to its home and glanced up just in time to see one of the men stumble over a body still lying on the ground. There goes that instinct again, her body ready to act to ensure the man was not injured, but he raised himself up, and Rowan assumed he was fine. Except, maybe he wasn't fine? She quirked an eyebrow, studying the way he dragged his one leg instead of putting weight on it as he approached the group.

When the first woman she met began to speak again, Rowan focused her attention on her words. She nodded silently, about to agree with her until the man who recently joined them interjected. The man stirred the woman, producing a meek response from the self-appointed leader.

Rowan barred her delicate arms across her chest as she observed the interaction between the two. She, of course, was leery of the whole situation but refused to create more distraught amongst the people like this man was doing. Besides, this woman had done nothing amiss. In fact, she had shown kindness to Rowan upon waking. Maybe that is why her heartstrings tugged ever-so-slightly for this woman. The air was heavy when Rowan spoke up, "I can't speak for everyone, but I can speak for myself when I say I would rather have someone who stumbles over their words than someone who stumbles over blatant objects on the ground."

Her unwavering gaze was locked onto the newcomer. "Speculating will do us no good. I think she's right," Rowan gestured with her head towards the turquoise-haired stranger. "We need to introduce ourselves and calm down before making decisions we will regret and we need to do this fast; night is approaching and we are in a forest. We need light and shelter."

She heard the scream first, but she was preoccupied before she could lay her eyes on the culprit.

Amber irises instead focused on a young woman who seemed her opposite. Fair skin. Lighter brown, longer hair. While Sol felt strangely grounded in the area the group of strangers were now accompanying, it was obvious this girl wasn’t, because when Sol looked her in the eyes, they began to water, soon after she read the card she’d been holding.

That answered one thing; the card Sol had wasn’t just for her. Everyone here all probably had cards with something representing them, at least, so that meant they were all connected.

Even if they hadn’t known each other before this moment, it was important that they would know each other now.

Sol heard someone rush over to the screaming...girl, it sounded like, and she took that moment to head over to the brown-haired woman.

β€œHey. No tears, okay?”

She spoke softly, kneeling down to the woman’s level and sitting next to her. Something about seeing the tears in her eyes reminded her of...something, something she couldn’t properly see, hear, envision in any way. Something that used to bother her?

She couldn’t stand seeing those tears. Irritation bloomed in her heart, and she did her best to keep it from souring her voice. An excellent job, in fact, since her immediate next words were smooth, gentle, and the annoyance ebbed away shortly after, to Sol's relief.

”We’re gonna figure this out.”

They had to, after all. There was no way she could go much longer without knowing anything about what was happening. She felt so misplaced, it was digging at her. Something within her was stirring, telling her to get moving, to get to work. But what was work? Was this it? Before she could stop herself, she was reaching out to delicately take the woman’s hand in her own to give it a slight squeeze. And before she could shut her mouth, her words slipped out in a gentle whisper.

”We have to hold onto the tears until we’re safe.”

That was the feeling inside the pit of her stomach. She did not, in any bone in her body, feel safe. Present and grounded? Sure, but comfort wasn’t something she felt at the moment. Regardless, she felt compelled to give it, to soothe this young woman’s tears. Sol felt completely different than what the figure had said to her in her dream. She felt like she’d been taken away from the perfect, safe place she’d made herself, and brought to wherever they were now. There was no way she was in the exact spot she should be.

But why did she feel so removed? It was confusing, vexing. All she could turn to, something that echoed deep in her soul for some reason, was consolation.

Sol’s eyes began to wander back to the rest of the group, although her hand stayed in the woman’s. She watched a man, seemingly near their age, shaking his sweater out, and across the way, two young women helping each other. There were at least twenty of them, Sol figured quickly as she noted a younger man, much like a teenager, offering to help out a girl - and further past them, a blonde woman near a black-haired man. What exactly had brought them all together?

The man with the sweater picked up his card.

"Emperor Luca. That has a nice ring to it."

β€œEmperor? You mean like this?”

She turned her head to the sound of the voices and watched as one of the women she saw earlier, with soft blue locks and adorned in white, turned to a tall blond man whose energy seemed vibrant and showed him her card. She couldn’t see exactly what was on the card, besides a young woman sitting with small lettering underneath, probably describing the card, like hers had. But the man had said β€œEmperor”, so that must have meant the card the woman was holding would be his pair. That would be the Empress, wouldn’t it? What exactly did these cards represent?

And why exactly was the man with the sweater throwing the card backwards like it wasn’t the only thing that everyone here seemed to share when she looked back to him?

Sol had to admit that it was amusing seeing him do such a thing, when the person she was currently holding hands with was in tears, someone had screamed, and she herself had woken up in a coughing fit. But she found herself hoping the card wasn’t too far.

She mulled over her next thoughts as she noticed the man with the sweater had gotten up and was...walking away from them? She wanted to say something, but before she could, he tripped over a leg that was seemingly bothering him more with every second. Something in her told her to look away, and she knew it was a good idea. There was no use embarrassing him further by letting him know someone had seen. But before she could, he tripped again, this time over someone’s body. To that, she winced.

She had no idea, but something in her felt….pity? No; pity wasn’t the word. Maybe it was empathy towards someone who obviously cared a lot about himself and his appearance, something she gathered from the way he spoke to the man with red hair he’d fallen over. He took out his irritation on the poor man, who looked as if he’d been spooked out of his skin.

β€œMaybe we're all meant to work together. We could--”

β€œSorry, I don’t remember making you leader?”

Oh, so he’d walked back to grace them with his presence.

Sol didn’t say a word as he walked to the girl she’d refer to as β€œEmpress” - until she gave her a better name to use - and immediately intimidated her. What an ego, she mused inwardly as they spoke to each other, giving the woman’s hand she still held another squeeze before letting it go. She offered the brunette a smile before looking back to the two as they passively glowered at each other. God, someone had to say something.

"I can't speak for everyone, but I can speak for myself when I say I would rather have someone who stumbles over their words than someone who stumbles over blatant objects on the ground."

Well, even though the man wasn’t an object, the woman - the one who had been with the Empress before, Sol noticed - was still pretty much right. "Speculating will do us no good. I think she's right," The brunette gestured to the other woman as she continued speaking, β€œWe need to introduce ourselves and calm down before making decisions we will regret and we need to do this fast; night is approaching and we are in a forest. We need light and shelter."

Now those were statements Sol could get behind.

Sol spoke genuinely, because she’d just woken up from a deep rest - or a rest she thought was deep - and yet, she felt exhausted. This didn’t feel new to her, however. The feeling was like wearing a shawl over her shoulders; it weighed her down but didn’t bother her mood. Maybe it usually did, but here? Now? She couldn’t be upset now, not until she could at least remember something.

β€œGoing home sounds really nice.” First she offered a few words to the one in beige. She didn’t want him to think she was ignoring him, but didn’t feel the need to send him any extra hostility. Sol had a feeling the woman who spoke before her wouldn’t be the only one to offer the young man some β€œadvice”.

But there were also more important things to focus on.

”Introductions...might be spotty, but, uhm." Sol chewed on her lip for a second before the name came to her again. "You can call me Sol. Maybe instead with intros, we can talk about these cards?”

She pulled the card out of her pocket, facing her defining side - the Sun - to those near her, and gave them a warm smile.

”Did we all happen to get one of these?”

At the very least one thing seemed consistent: it looked like noone had a clue what was going on. Or rather everyone seemed a bit disoriented. This was only natural considering they had all just woken up in the middle of nowhere, but he wasn't ready to clear anyone of suspicion. Hell, for all he knew he played a part in whatever it was that transpired. He didn't have the memory for it either way. In the end it didn't really matter. The freshest source of information would be the people in front of him, and even if they didn't know anything it would prove paramount to build up trust. He had no way of telling how long they would be together, but he had the itching suspicion this wasn't about to be something one could walk away from so easily.

It didn't take long for the [div class="gradLove"]scream[/div] to reach his ears. Sounded like someone wasn't handling the situation too well. A kid? He could help but narrow his eyes. He had come to the conclusion that everyone was here under relatively the same circumstances, but perhaps that wasn't quite the case. Had he not been beaten to it, he might have intervened. Helping those in need was the quickest way of bonding. It was the very premise he had planned to put into action. Though gaining a kid's trust likely wouldn't help much in the long run anyway.

It was the larger conglomeration of awoken people that held his interest. Not only due to the number, but the obvious commotion that had begun to stir. One man in particular displayed quite the attitude. Not very smart. While his concerns were warranted, and Will shared many of his points, the mistake here was his hostile approach. With as many people as there were it seemed statistically unlikely everyone would be in on it. If they weren't then first impressions would pave the way towards cooperation, and even if they were, information could still be extracted. Regardless, he wanted to get on this guy's good sideβ€”assuming they had one of those. As much of an idiot as they seemed to be their head was in the right place. Better yet, if he were to land himself as the only person who could reason with them then his own importance to the group would skyrocket.

Shit. He had begun making his way over in hopes of settling things, but someone just had to make things worse. A rather plain looking woman was responsible. The only interesting thing about her seemed to be her amber eyes. Though he supposed her dark hair was in rather good condition given the surroundings. She had gone and given the antagonistic man a piece of her mind. This complicated things, and he wasn't sure there was still a good way of approaching. The situation had become more of a "choose your side" thing, and it was clear as day that the man with the attitude was on the low end. He wasn't about to share in their fall for a gamble in winning their cooperation.

Luckily the voice of reason interjected. It was the same voice he had heard earlier. She was short with equally as short black hair boasting a darker complexion. He took her for the kind of person he wouldn't need to befriend, based on her words.

Introductions did seem pointless but the topic of the cards had his attention.

"[div class="gradFortune"]I think that's a good place to start,[/div]" He further closed the distance between himself and the group, but still remained at a distance. He wasn't shy or anything, but a certain amount of space just felt right. "[div class="gradFortune"]You can call me Whβ€”W-Will.[/div]"

That was close. He didn't want to reveal his hand just yet. Even if that hand was just a single card.

"[div class="gradFortune"]I don't expect anyone to like or trust the people here. In fact, I advise against it for the time being. But we do need to cooperate for our own best interests.[/div]"

As he spoke he scanned the others' faces, and made solid eye contact with each until he passed over the woman who was being subjected to the earlier hostilities. He had only heard her voice before, but having now seen herβ€”

"[div class="gradFortune"]Bitch...[/div]" It was brief and it was mellow but he had certainly said it. He hadn't intended on it, but the result was the same. She had a calming voice and spoke no words of maliceβ€”well-dressed and by all means a typical beauty. There was simply no reason for it. She had done nothing to bring this on. The word had slipped, and he didn't even know why.

Her balance was way off, yet her surroundings seemed stable. With some many people around there had to be at least one who would help, and those brief moments of helpless lasted a lifetime. Her eyes were set upon the ground. It may have been a coincidence, but the sight it showed was none other than the front of the object she had discarded. The image was terribly dirtied and had been subjected to her footwork, but the text was nigh untouched:

The Lovers

Love. There was something about that cardβ€”that wordβ€”that made her heart flutter. Her dizziness persisted, but she felt free, like she could fly away at any minute. A priceless carefree feeling, and yet it didn't stop her from stomping on the already worn token. The movement only worsened her weariness, but she kept at it. Had it not been for a young man who had come forth and offered a silent hand, she might not have stopped.

It took only a single glance to take her breath away. He seriously needed something done with his hair. Had it not been for his vibrant irises, their eyes may have never met. Not only was their hair rather long, but it had a strange white streak across it. And his expression. My goodness! Was he being a gentleman or did he just want her to quit expressing distress, like that other fellow? They had made such a rude remark upon her awakening.

What was it again, "What the hell is wrong with you?" She wasn't composed enough then to have caught who said it, but she had in fact heard it. She would have to make amends with them later. For now she would accept the help of this kind, albeit strange young man.

They didn't even have the audacity to help her up, and instead awaited her to reach out in her current condition! At least the gesture in itself still held some meaning. He had extended his left leaving her to do the same. In other words, her ungloved hand. She didn't mind. It wasn't like she knew why she wore them in the first place.

"[div class="gradLove"]T-thank you,[/div]" she managed as she placed her delicate palm in his hand. "[div class="gradLove"]D-do you k-know what's going on?[/div]" Her eyes began to well up, but her petite smile remained. "[div class="gradLove"]I-I can't remember anything. W-why is this happening? M-my chest hurts. It hurts...[/div]"

She shifted her weight so the one in front of her would take more of the strain. They could take it, and were willing. She just hoped they had some answers, but her expectations weren't very high. An unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people. It didn't bother her as much as it had. Maybe it was because she wasn't alone. Even the stranger in front of her was becoming less and less strangeβ€”apart from their hair.

This feeling was dampened, and trampled. For every word that came out of that abhorrent man was tasteless. They had a problem with her screams. They had a problem with an unconscious person. They had a problem with a sweet woman trying only to make things less confusing. They had a problem with everything.

She pitied them. Someone like that was clearly not happy with themselves. Yes, surely it must've been the result of a sad unsatisfying life. The one's with the smallest brains barked the loudest after all. Not that she minded. It probably wasn't his fault. The world around him made him that way. She would have to remember to help him later. The pretty lady with the cute black bangs seemed to have a similar idea. They were being so nice, and what a pretty name too! She herself hadn't even thought about a temporary name.

She turned back to the young man in front of her, "[div class="gradLove"]Do you think Love is a good nickname?[/div]" Her smile left no room for an answer different from her own.

MONOTHE HANGED MAN"T-thank you. D-do you k-know what's going on?"

So much stuttering from this young girl. Mono didn't know whether to attribute it to the side effect of the amnesia she seemed susceptible to or if that was just her nature. He couldn't help but hope it wasn't the latter. The girl continued to speak even as she took hold of his hand, asking another unanswerable question and claiming that her chest was in pain. He mulled over how best to answer the questions she'd asked him, simultaneously leaning backwards and pulling the girl to her feet. Frail as she appeared, he expended a noticeable amount of effort. Mono wasn't sure if that spoke about his physical strength (or lack thereof) or her appearance being deceptive. Her appearance did intrigue him, he had to admit. Her purple-grey hair was a colour he felt he had never seen before, even in his past life, and her facial features were what he knew most would consider cute. Adorable, even.

What was he thinking? Why did it matter? What mattered now was figuring out what was going on... and answering this girl's questions.

"No, I don't know what's going on. I don't know anything. Any other questions you might have, I have them too. I think we all do."

He chose to ignore her thanks and her claim of being in pain. Such things were unimportant in this situation; what everyone needed to do was figure out what to do to stay alive, be that in figuring out their location or finding shelter or food, whatever. Anything other than begin arguing and-

Oh, son of a bitch.

Mono growled quietly as several voices began to speak up. His left hand released the girl's hand and reached up to his face, pinching the bridge of his nose as his eyes squeezed shut. Forced to listen to the bickering around him, started by a man with a limp.

Pain began to blossom behind his eyes.

Even as the pain intensified, his ears registered the girl speaking to him once again. Seeking validation for her newfound name. Mono cracked one eye open and fixed it on her own lavender eyes. Nice colour. Unfortunate that the pain behind his eyes didn't allow him to appreciate them.

"You shouldn't be asking me that. Names are important; ask that to yourself, not someone else."

After depositing his advice, headache continuing to worsen, Mono caught the tail end of the bickering; 'Bitch'.

This pain in his head... these people pissed him off.

"Shut up."

Mono suddenly snapped, raising his voice so everyone could hear. He opened both eyes now and glowered at everyone standing around him, with the exclusion of the girl beside him. She was innocent.

"You're all giving me a headache. Shut up."

His annoyance continued to grow despite his venting. In the back of his mind he wondered why he was reacting in such a way, why he despised these people as much as he did. It didn't stop him from continuing. Every word he spoke was punctuated by the ringing of his coin as he continued to subconsciously flip it.

"Cripple, you're the origin of my headache. Slap yourself with one of your hitman gloves and shut up."

Mono fixed his vibrant green eyes on the man in a glare as he ranted, the one that had snapped initially. He continued to look between everyone else he was annoyed at, but the glowers he directed at them where nowhere near the intensity of the one he'd aimed at the first man.

"Cotton candy hair, shut up. Pumpkin eyes, shut up. Palpatine, shut up. Fatass, shut up. Caramel macchiato, shut up. You five didn't do anything wrong, but shut up anyway."

The hell was he even saying? The headache couldn't suppress his confusion at the words that cascaded from his mouth. The hell was a Palpatine? What was a caramel macchiato? Were these terms important to the man he'd been before? Damn this amnesia...

His final glower was directed at the one that introduced himself as W-W-Will. Mono's hand finally lowered from his face as he spoke, the pain behind his eyes slowly (agonisingly slowly) beginning to subside.

"You, hypocrite. You're an asshole. Shut up."

Mono closed his eyes and exhaled heavily, feeling better after his venting. He opened his eyes again after a brief pause and scanned the group again, slipping his left hand into his jacket pocket while his right continued to flip his Japanese coin. His headache had subsided enough to allow him to feel a modicum of regret. His gaze flicked over to Love again, unsure of how she'd have reacted to his short rant. He quickly glanced away again, unsure why he cared so much about what she thought of him. Perhaps she resembled or acted like someone important to him, to whoever he had been before his amnesia. He just hoped she knew that his outburst hadn't been directed at her at all. In any case, he decided to find all that out later.

"Apologies for my outburst. My temperament is... well, I don't know. Evidently rather volatile. I do know that our first order of business is survival. What we do not need is needless conflict. Which, much to my annoyance, may be too much to ask for if everyone here is one of these."

He extracted the card from his pocket and held it up before him, the face declaring his being a SINNER facing outwards for all to see. His own face remained blank. He slipped the card back into his jacket pocket after a pause, glancing and pointing towards the two girls that seemed best suited to lead.

"Candor and cooperation are necessary in this situation, and so is at least a degree of leadership. I believe Sol and cotton cand- you with the blue hair can do a good of 'leading' us."

He fell silent, having said all he wanted to say. But... it didn't feel right, somehow. He bit the inside of his cheek as he wondered what he'd missed, what he needed to say to round everything off.

"Ah... you may call me Mono."

Now it felt right.

With little to no energy, Judgement tried to lie back down. This didn't go well at all. There was too much shouting to fall asleep. People shouting in confusion, people telling those confused people to shut up. It was a lot. She let out a sigh and sat back up again.

Looking down at her attire, she finally took notice. Blue latex gloves and a white lab coat. Well, at least it was nice to know something about herself. Her calmed state of mind lasted not but a minute before even more questions flooded her mind. What kind of scientist was she? What did she study? What was she doing before all of this?

Above, a small orange bird landed on a branch and began to sing.

Icterus Galbula... The Baltimore Oriole.
Oriole.... Well, it's better than calling myself Judgement... Maybe I was a bird scientist...

She laughed a bit at the thought.

Judgement, now named Oriole, stood up. She looked to all the bickering people. Most of them were arguing over who was the "leader." No one looked like they knew what was going on, and some were clearly upset about it.

β€œNext time don’t lie on the floor when there’s other people walking about. The ignorance of some people."

She looked over to a short man with light hair. Well. She won't be talking to him...
Oriole also herd a woman respond to him. She seemed reasonable. Oriole was almost surprised at herself. In what world would someone be deemed "reasonable" for having a basic sense of logic? Oriole didn't want to know.

Looking back at her clothing, the woman ripped off the gloves. Her hands were getting uncomfterbly sweaty. Whatever "lab" she worked at clearly didn't have a good budget. Placing the gloves in her pocket, her hand bumped into a small box. Curiously taking the box out of her coat, a small "huh" escaped her lips.

It was a pack of cigarettes.

Why would a scientist smoke?

Shrugging, Oriole placed a cigarette in her mouth. She then began digging around her other pockets searching for a lighter, and aha! A small silver lighter in her left inside pocket. Lighting up the cigarette, a sense of relaxation overcame her.

I guess that's why a scientist would smoke...

Whatever she was going to have to deal with, at least she had a pack of cigarettes to help her. Now she wanted to speak. She didn't know why, but for some reason, wanted to contribute to the group collective. Oriole figured that a good place to start would be from the very beginning. The "leaders" hadn't made it too far anyway.

She took the cigarette out of her mouth. "Well before we declare a leader, I think it would be wise to go over whatever information we have. Even if it's practically nothing, someone has to have something that's useful." Smoke flooded out of her mouth while she spoke.

[div class=mainCon][div class=contentWrap][div class=scrollWrap][div class=textWrap]
There was a dull ache in the back of his head as his eyes slowly opened.

He didn't speak at first, instead pinpointing the exact location of the pain as those around him began to wake, began to scream.

Began to argue.

It made his headache worse, of course, but for some reason, he knew he couldn't compete with human nature.

He let out a soft sigh, staring at the sky as the others continued to move. He didn't recognize any of their voices, didn't recognize they inhabited, in the slightest.

It dawned on him a quick moment later that, to his surprise, he didn't even recognize himself.

The young man, instead of sitting up, checked his pockets. He didn't know he wore jackets, he thought to himself as he felt many objects, but pulled out a card first.

His eyebrow raised as he viewed the front of the card.

01-magician-meaning-rider-waite-tarot-major-arcana_large.jpg

The Magician?

"What is this?" He mumbled, checking out the figure on the card. For some reason, his light brown eyes couldn't stop eyeing the symbol above the figure, who held up something and seemingly presented a table full of resources to the audience. He felt like he should have known what it was.

He should have known a lot of things, he felt. It was kind of frustrating - he was definitely missing more than he felt he should...but he could study this side of the card at another time.

He sucked on his tongue as he turned the card around to view the back.

tarot-back-jpg.553091

How...intriguing. He found himself growing more curious by the second, could feel the gears in his brain turning as if this was what it was used to.

Maybe he liked figuring out things. Figuring out problems, maybe.

All he knew now was that the current problem in front of him - the people who had begun to gather, who were still gathering tension - was a problem he didn't find himself interested in fixing. Maybe they could get a grip so he wouldn't have to convince them to. After all, some of them had spoken truthfully.

It seemed like it was going to get dark, they would need shelter, and getting along would be the best way to figure out what was happening to them all--

Ah, and then another voice decided to shut everyone up. It didn't help his headache, which he thought was quite unfortunate as he went through his pockets once more. They had started giving introductions before the interruption, and Magician was definitely not his name from what he could remember. He needed something else that didn't sound so ridiculous.

As if something was looking out for him, the next thing he pulled out of his pocket was a glasses case. He hummed as he saw it, opening the case as if it were habit. He scanned over its contents; glasses, of course, and...a cloth?

He placed the case in his lap as he finally sat up, putting the glasses on and realizing, after a second, that the glasses hadn't improved his vision in the slightest. Since they didn't hurt his eyes to wear, he kept them on anyway, and picked up the cloth as he noticed something embroidered on its side.

"...Puck."

Now, Puck sounded better than Magician. It felt right - the first thing that felt right since he'd opened his eyes.

Puck closed the case, sliding back into its respective pocket, before looking over at where the commotion was coming from.

"Well before we declare a leader, I think it would be wise to go over whatever information we have. Even if it's practically nothing, someone has to have something that's useful."

Well, he knew for certain he had jack shit. So, for once - for once? - he kept quiet, instead of stirring the pot. Instead, he went back to his card, as he'd heard multiple people mention the cards before the last person - a woman with a lab coat, with smoke leaving her lips.

He noted the abundance of nature surrounding the card, as if the figure was commanding it to grow themself. It he was a magician, then he must have been holding a wand. That made sense. Maybe he could be of use in their current surrounding, if this was the card he had been paired with. He had a feeling he didn't have any supernatural power within himself, but he could already tell they would need to find food and shelter, as had been stated.

"You can call me Puck."

He finally spoke up, twirling his card around to show the defining face. His eyes rested on the face that he saw, one that spoke of sacrifice, before they snapped up. The one called Mono had been correct. They had to be careful, especially if someone here actually remembered anything...! Oh, what an excellent question.

"Information is key, so I must ask...are we all suffering from a memory lapse? Does anyone remember anything before waking up here?"
