Kanen James
Kanen leaned forward and extended his hand to pick up her wallet, picking it up gingerly and opening it. Who the hell is Ariel Castro, he thought to himself, musing over what he assumed to be an insult His fingers disappeared into it, ruffled around for a moment, and then emerged once more with her driver's license in tow. His eyes scanned over it with satisfaction. Unlike Scarlett's face, which refused to cooperate, or her mouth, which Kanen was certain would give him nothing but lies anyhow, her ID could only give him truths.

" S C A R L E T T." He spelled out her name to a simple tune. He continued reading over her ID, comparing the photo to the woman in front of him the best he could in the darkness. Kanen had been wrong; they'd grabbed the correct person, and this wouldn't all be for nothing. Hopefully?

When she started asking him what he wanted, Kanen audibly snorted and tossed her wallet back towards her without taking any of the cash from it. "Wrong." he said bluntly, eyes still drifting across her ID. "Five-foot-two?" He asked accusingly, raising an eyebrow at her. "I might be fucked up but that doesn't seem right even to me." He didn't wait for an answer before tossing her ID back towards her as well and leaning back against the interior wall of the van.

"If I just wanted money, I wouldn't have grabbed a stripper" He began explaining, letting his head fall back against the wall so he was looking down his nose at her. "Financially, you aren't worth shit to me. Not to mention, if I had any intent of giving you back, don't you think I'd wear a mask, maybe cover the tats?" He questioned, slapping the tattoos on one of his shoulders for emphasis. Kanen of course had no intention of killing her. Not bringing masks was a foolish mistake he had only realized in the past few moments when he'd had the chance to calm down. That said, Kanen was already getting annoyed with her attitude, and he wanted her to question her own conclusions.

True, Kanen had no idea what he was going to do with her, but she didn't need to know that. Kanen just wanted to piss off her friends.

Scarlett rolled her eyes.
"I wear platforms, jackass." She replied plainly, grabbing her ID and wallet off the ground. She shoved them back into her bag and crossed her legs. "The lack of masks was stupid, by the way. The club has CCTV and my brother isn't shy about plastering dickwads on the public boards. You're gonna be famous."

Her expression turned cautious, hesitant, for only a moment. She wondered if his intent was more malicious than she had initially assumed, for a brief moment she doubted herself. Then again, though, as rationality kicked in she span her mind back to where it has rested before. If he wanted to hurt her he would have already done so. So if it wasn't for the money what the hell did he want.

"So what is it, then? I'd be a pretty shitty housewife, I'll tell you that. And if you're looking for some sort of favours then you're doing it the wrong way. I would have done it if you paid me enough and asked politely. Didn't have to go through all this hassle." She quirked an eyebrow, still content on giving him hell. Truthfully Scarlett just wanted to see how far she could push before he snapped at her again. Teasing and antagonizing as if she had very little care for her own wellbeing. If he wanted to kill her, he would have killed her.

That's what she was telling herself at least. There was still a sense of danger. She didn't know him but he knew her. Not surprising. Her face had been out in the public since her father made it big. A lot of people knew who she was. Unnerving, but she got over that pretty quickly when it was helping aide her in her own career.

"Where the fuck is my chicken wrap?"

Kanen smiled to himself a little bit at her comment about the masks. He couldn't even really be mad about that one, she was right. The masks were kinda important. Even an amateur would have remembered that part. Her comments about her brother however made Kanen squint his eyes again and cock cheeky smirk. Her brother wouldn't put posters up. Not unless he was a fool anyways. He would undoubtedly do something, but that's what Kanen wanted. In his view, this was all just chess, and he wanted to force Scarlett's brother, and by extension the Milyukovs, to make a move.

He continued listening to her other guesses and Kanen even laughed a little bit at her suggestions of being a housewife or being wanted for favors. She had been pretty close to the money already with her brother, and yet she'd flown right over the mark. Only when she brought up the wrap again did Kanen engage once more.

"Where's my fucking chicken wrap?"

"Maybe Salem could pick it up for you?" Kanen coolly responded, intentionally using her brother's name to let Scarlett know that while Kanen might be brash and strung off his shit, he had done his research.

"Speaking of, Salem isn't going to go out plastering your name, not if he knows what's good for him anyways." Kanen continued, trying to flip the tables on her and make her feel like the dumb one now. "What kind of dumb ass criminal advertises shit like that?" He went on. "Oh boy. Look at me everyone, can't even protect my own sister, just come on over and jack my shit" Kanen finished sarcastically, waving his hands a little bit like he was playing a jester or a king's fool.

"Salem tries pulling some shit like that, I reckon the Milyukovs drive him out to the desert themselves." Kanen smiled to himself again, silently wondering if name-dropping the Russians would be enough for her to put the pieces together herself.

"Salem isn't here."
She bit back, giving him an incredulous look. "Owh what, big boy, you thought you could scare me by name dropping my brother?" Scarlett scoffed and leaned her head back, looking up at the roof of the van. "Obviously you are going to know who my family is. Kind of comes with the whole celebrity title, doesn't it?"

"Which by the way, I don't think it would really matter if he does or doesn't put posters up. Don't know why you seem to think it would matter to him when he isn't my bodyguard. He may be violent and he's surely going to kick your ass, but it's not his job to keep me safe."
She scrunched up her nose, looking over at him pointedly.

"And my brother isn't a criminal, by the way." She added, "Being the manager of a club doesn't mean that you're a criminal just because the movies and the media makes you think so, idiot. And the Milyukovs? So not only are you grabbing me from my place of work but you're stalking me? Alexei and I weren't public, how the fuck do you know about him? Or is it Kaz? I slept with him once, bucko, he's not exactly invested in anything aside from the revenue that I bring to the club. Fucking creep."

Scarlett huffed, rolling her head back once again and shifting, attempting to make herself even somewhat comfortable. Confusion stemmed as she thought about Alexei and Kaz, wondering why he seemed to care what they thought. As if bringing them up was some sort of power play. A stalker and a kidnapper, lucky her. And still no chicken wrap.

"I don't know what game you think you're playing but this certainly isn't the way to win. If you're gonna kill me then kill me but I'm fucking starved and I'm missing my gig so if you're not going to do anything bad then maybe do the good thing and get me my freaking wrap before I lose my goddamn mind."

Kanen James
At first, Kanen thought she was just playing the game. Acting ignorant to her brother's crimes and everything in order to keep dancing around the subject would hardly be a bad tactic. Hell, Kanen had played the drunken fool once or twice himself to get out of a rough spot. But the more Scarlett kept talking and kept trying to deny Kanen's implications, the more evident it became that she genuinely didn't know about Salem or the Russian's seedier side of life.

What started as a smile spread until Kanen began laughing at her without shame or abandon. By the time she had finished her tirade, he had calmed down to softly giggling to himself at the situation, but a wild grin was smeared across his face. "You. Don't. Know. Shit." He teased, waving a finger at her playfully. This was better than expected. Kanen thought he was just gonna pick her up, piss some people off, and go from there; but this sweet little sprinkling of familial drama was like the cherry on top. If picking Scarlett up off the street wasn't going to be enough to drive Salem to action, surely driving this wedge between Scarlett and her brother would be enough to give him that little push over the edge.

"Ok, look," Kanen began in between intermittent laughter. "We are gonna go get you your chicken wrap, but there are some things you gotta know." He went on, speaking loud enough for the driver to hear his announcement about the wrap.

"First off, I want you to stop a moment and try to think logically about this. I know you, knew enough about you to pick you up the way I did without a hitch, even while...shall we say Dancing on the Moon?" Kanen explained, pulling down one eyelid with hand to really show off his pupils while twisting his other hand in the 'crazy' motion beside his head with the other.

"I think it is pretty clear I took the time the pick my target and pick it well, and frankly, pretty as you are, you are still worthless to me." Kanen paused. "You are here because I want your punk-ass brother and his Post-Soviet-Pussy friends to know they are not untouchable. They might've been able to hide their little side-gig from you. But they won't hide from me."

Kanen paused again, taking in a long breath and holding it for a moment before breathing out. He was pretty sure he was on the come-down now. "After you've gone ahead and thought about that, I want you to ask yourself this; If I" Kanen paused to point at himself, "am wrong about who your brother and his little friends are, what reason do I have to keep you alive? You've seen my face. If you and your brother aren't criminals, and you can go to the cops? Well...If you are really so confident your brother is some saint or something, I ought to just cut your head off, leave it and your body out in the desert, and stage it like a cartel killing. Cops will just eat that shit up." Kanen finished, turning sharply serious at the end.

"As for this person... again, I… I don’t know. I haven’t- seen him yet. His name is Lei… ah, well, his English name is Aaron Chua.”

Aaron Chua.

Yes, Oliver did know him, and his reaction revealed as much: the sharp wince of his facial features, as though he'd just been jolted by an electric shock, and the way he drew back in his chair, arms guarding inwards. For a long time, he forgot to say anythiing, eyes vacant and mouth moving inaudibly, not realizing that he was sinking into yet another bottomless tunnel of thoughts and questions and internal monologuing.

So he was right.
He knew it.
Mei really was in with the family. But why hadn't they crossed paths? Well, there were a lot of people who Oliver wasn't allowed to bother directly, so it made sense. And if Mei was an associate of Aaron's, she was probably closer to the fighting ring than the.... marketing side of things.

Oliver only knew Aaron from extraneous tasks, usually unpaid-- just part of the job, he supposed. From time to time, someone would occasionally give him something to give to Aaron, or Aaron would have something that he needed to disappear and Oliver would take it off his hands. Oliver figured it was important to stay on good terms if he wanted to keep getting work and avoid ending up floating in a rooftop water tank with a bullet in his skull.

Knowing Mei was involved in all of this felt worse, somehow.
He did what he had to, but Mei... Mei had a home, and maybe even an education. She didn't deserve to be stuck in this mess.

Mei moved slightly, and that snapped Oliver's focus back into the room.
Disoriented and slightly embarrassed that he'd yet again been sitting in petrified silence for far too many seconds, Oliver tried to force himself to relax out of his tensed-up position, only to find that he suddenly couldn't remember how to sit casually... eventually having to settle for an awkward side-lean over the back of the chair that looked even more awkward and uncomfortable than before.

"S-so you... you, you know Aaron. Wow. Cool. Cool cool. Okay." The stutter was back in full force. He was speaking far too quickly and was starting to frantically scramble for the rest of the sentence, as if he were being held at gunpoint to keep talking. "And you... I-I... well, I'm sorry I didn't... I didn't know that we were... but what else do th-.... what do p-people do around here, I... I'm not in danger."
He had abruptly circled back to something Mei had said several minutes ago. It had taken him this long to process it.
"I'm not in danger and I don't need help."
His paper-white fingers gripped the edge of the library table, blanching his knuckles to a shade so upsettingly pale that it made the rest of him look sallow by comparison.
"You know. Everything has... well, not just predators, but... antagonists. Problems. Sea turtles have tiger sharks and human refuse and commercial fishing trawlers. Desert tortoises have eagles and bobcats and habitat encroachment. We have... you know what we have. You know what we do." The brief flash of anger had faded from his eyes, leaving them once again blankly staring out into the bookshelves, half-shaded under his dark hair. "I actually think turtles have a simpler situation. Definitely more perilous, but... just simpler."

So he was planning on killing her.

Scarlett let out a slow breath, eyes trained on the man in front of her. A cold shiver of dread slid down her spine, making her pull into herself a little. Scarlett didn't say a word for a long moment, her heart pounding as she came to bitter realizations.

Salem had always been violent. He always had a way of protecting her that nobody else seemed to have and him being part of some sort of criminal organization made a lot more sense considering the things he had done before... The people he hung out with, the money he seemed to have, the phone calls he would make. Why he would hide something like that from Scarlett was beyond her. It hurt to think about, her brother keeping such a secret from her.

It hurt even more realizing that it was likely her who brought him into it in the first place. She knew Alexei first, the two of them seeming to get along better than any brother and sisters boyfriend duo that she had known. But Alexei? The sweet cuddly bear that she knew him to be? The quick to make a joke, quick to comfort man that she would have trusted with her life... would have gone the full way with if it weren't for her own reservations and the jealousy of his ex girlfriend... Could he really be a criminal?

Scarlett shook her head softly, eyes flicking about the mans face for a moment, "I'm not going to beg you for my life." She whispered, swallowing thickly, "If Salem..." She trailed off, looking away, forcing herself not to let him break her. "What would I even tell the cops? That some guy picked me up off the street and bought me food? It's not like you've actually done anything to me."

She rubbed her arm, eyebrows furrowing slightly, "If you're just trying to piss them off... I..." Her thoughts were going a mile a minute. She wasn't about to cry, that wasn't the kind of person that she was. She was calm, steady, but this all seemed like a little too much. "If you're not going to kill me you have to at least let me tell my mom that I'm okay. She'll be worried out of her mind and... I... Lilith doesn't deserve that."

One more book.

Thats what Salina told herself. One more book to add to the armful she already held, already heavy and weighing her down yet Salina held her own as she trodded through the shelves in the library. She didn't want to have make the trip again later in the week, it would be a waste of time. Instead she decided to grab everything she needed so she was set for the week of studying and essay writing. All mixed in with her very busy work schedule, Salina felt like she hardly had the time to do much of anything else.

Not that she minded at all. Studying what she loved, reading up about her passions. Sure the essays weren't the most fun thing in the world to write but the material always made her happy. That was the goal, wasn't it? To do pursue something that made you happy?

So one more book. Then she went to the checkout before slipping the books that would fit into her tote. Next stop was work and she planned to get there an hour or so early so she had time to do some more studying before getting ready for her shift. Her work bag was in her car, outfit for the night carefully folded and packed away. It was a shorter shift at least, meant that she would be able to get a lot done. Maybe even have a chance to call her mom or watch a movie before bed and class the next morning.

Busy busy busy little bee. Salina was on her way out of the library when she overheard a conversation that definitely wasn't for her but had piqued her interest. Tiger Sharks. One of her favorite sharks. Beautiful and majestic beasts of the sea. Her gaze wandered about, trying to find the source of the voice before she decided to - very rudely, she admitted - interrupt.

"Tiger Sharks are preyed on by Orcas." Salina hummed, holding her books close to her chest as she spoke up, looking at the pair sitting in front of her. "They.. uh... bite off their fins and drown them before disemboweling them and eating their innards. Which is just... horrible... So... even predators have predators."

Kanen James
Kanen watched Scarlett curl inwards on herself like a dead flower drying in the sun, but he was satisfied that she didn't try and defend Salem's supposed innocence any further, and Kanen didn't feel the need to drive his point home anymore. From the front seats, Kanen could hear the driver and the other passenger arguing about what nearby convenience store had the better chicken wraps. They had settled on one location before realizing they couldn't exactly go through the drive through and opting for another store with a large parking lot to stop at briefly. The two had just started debating about what route to take when Scarlett spoke up in a low whisper, pulling Kanen's attention back.

Her mention of the cops and him having 'not actually done anything' made Kanen chuckle and shake his head, rocking it back and forth against the side of the van where it rested. "While I will concede that the cops might have a difficult time making a case against this, kidnapping is a crime still, as is destruction of property. Your phone unfortunately evidence of both." Kanen corrected turning his eyes from her to his fingernails, which he began to absentmindedly pick at. "Besides, didn't you say your brother would have already noticed or something like that?" Kanen raised an eyebrow at her accusingly. "Little late for me to play the innocence card at that point, huh."

"This is all besides the point anyways!"
Kanen suddenly said, waving one of his hands dismissively. "Relax. You're not gonna die, least not tonight." He said with a shrug. "Buuuuuuut...." Kanen said, dragging out the word. "No. No calling mommy. Whole point of this was to piss people off, calling to say 'oh don't worry though, I'm keeping her real safe' kinda defeats the purpose, don't ya think?"

Kanen paused for a moment "Don't even answer that actually. Doesn't matter. Your phone is broke, you ain't using mine. You won't be gone too long anyhow. I just need you to miss your little concert or whatever to really get 'em riled up, then we'll just drop you off somewhere." He went on to explain, rolling his hands over one another as he talked. "Look, at the end of the day, just look at this like a fun little surprise vacation. Nobody even has to get hurt so long as baby-brother knows how to recognize a warning shot with dramatic flair for what it is." When Kanen said the last part, he opened his ands like little fireworks and lazily turned his gaze away from his fingernails and back to Scarlett.

"Speakin' of 'im. How do you think Salem responds to all this. Keep in mind your newly acquired information regarding his line of work, please." Kanen asked, partially just trying to tease her and cut the tension a little bit now, but also to see if he could get a better idea of what kind of retaliation to expect.
