Fantasy Virtual Reality ~ Threshold

MissUnderstood

Fangirl Gamer
(I got the idea from both Sword Art Online and a different anime that I can't remember the name of)

It was day one of the new game called “Threshold” and there were hundreds of people logging into it. It wasn't like any other game though, it came with a special set up to where you put on a headgear of some sort and were transferred into the game. It sounded too good to be true, and it was.

The second you logged into the game, the log out option was erased completely. Even if you reached up and tried to take it off, you couldn't because you couldn't move your actual arms. There wasn't any announcement saying that it was being fixed. There was only a letter sent to every player via inventory.

It read as follows~

Hello and welcome~

This is an experiment of sorts that all of you who bought the game 'Threshold' are privy to. It is testing out the ability to be actually sucked into a game mentally and physically. That is right, you read this correctly. Your actual physical body is now a part of the game. There is no way out, even if by some miracle you survive to beat the game. It's just impossible. The gear can be destroyed, as it probably will be, and you will be just fine. It will not effect any gameplay or your lives. This was in fact in the fine print of the agreement you had to sign when buying the game, as all of you were more than likely too lazy to actually read the entire thing. It was a legally binding contract so that no missing persons reports could be filed.

The game runs on a guild system. Each guild, or community, has a flag. This is your name, your pride, and your gift from me to you. Keep it and take good care of it. Your leader will hold the actual flag, or if you wish to call it a banner then that, and you will only have the mental copy. You pick which community you wish to join, or if you wish to make up your own altogether.

Along with guilds, and leaders, there are DemonKings, Floor Masters, Gods and others. The Floor Masters are the Beta testers that have chosen this spot. The Floor Masters take care of the different levels in the world, even though all of the levels are on the same landscape. The closer to the center you get, the stronger the Floor Master is. They take care of the Games and judge them so there isn't any cheating.

The Demon Kings are just Computer Generated, so it's not an actual player. The reason being is the player would be way too overpowered if we were to let a player take control of this slot. They are just a nuisance and were put in as a way of making it more difficult for the guilds to stay togeter.

The Gods are computer generated as well, but for a different reason. The Gods are giant beings that control the elements. Not the weather. They live on the edge of the world and are generally left alone. Their games are more of a riddle than anything else, but they do get pissed off if they lose.

Now that we have covered the basics, it is time to cover 'Gifts'.(The password is "VRMMORPG") Gifts are what you were given upon entering the game as a special ability. It can vary from the ability to talk to animals, to the ability of Total Obedience. The stronger you get, the stronger your ability will get. Upon entering the game you are unaware of just what gift you have been given but it will make itself known before long. You will find that you will not be able to have more than one gift, and you are stuck with the one you were given. Some of you will complain that your gift is pathetic, but even if you have the weakest gift to start off with, you may find it more useful than you originally think.

Yes we are aware that not everybody in here is human, you get the body you chose to make when beginning the character building process. If you chose to make yourself a dragon anthro, then you will be stuck as a dragon anthro. There really isn't anything you can do. If you were born in real life as a guy but decided that catfishing somebody would be a fun idea and made a female avatar, then that is what you are stuck with. If you don't like the way you look, too bad so sad. However, if you made yourself an actual animal, then you were reverted to your actual appearance. We will have no talking animals unless you were given the gift to talk to animals. So yes, there will be vampires and other mythical beings so don't get freaked out.

I think that just about covers it. If you have any other questions just ask another person. You never know, you may accidentally ask a beta tester.

Once you were finished reading the letter, it vanished from your inventory.

There was a small card in its place that read what your gift was in glowing white letters, and as you looked around it appeared that every person had different colored ones.

It didn't take long to realize that everybody was started at the ends of the world and if you didn't get a move on, you might just end up meeting one of those 'Gods' mentioned in the letter. Then you realized, the letter didn't mention just what exactly a game was.

Okay, so. That is the setting of the roleplay in basic detail and it also explains some concepts.

I will explain here what exactly a 'game' is.

It can either be a duel, test of wisdom, or pure luck.

The person holding the game will have a scroll set up explaining the rules of their particular game. It can be anything at all and the details of the winning side can also be anything. For one side to win, the other could have to die, or vice versa. It could be that the player has to find specific card within a set amount of time or they lose.

Now, the prizes can be literally anything that the player already owns: their guild banner if the guild entire guild is forced to play, their pride, their dignity, their honor, their gift, a one time command the losing side has to do, a piece of cloth… Just anyhting.

Things I will absolutely not stand for-

~Cheaters

~Overpowered Players at the very start

~Ignoring other characters unless you can't feasibly get to them in a reasonable amount of time

~Auto-hits or No hits. This means, saying that your character threw something and automatically hit the other character. This also means, your character has to get hit sometimes.

~Killing other characters unless it is okay by both sides.

~Complaining, it was you who chose this roleplay after all. Nobody forced you into it

~Leaving without saying something. If you do this, I will find you and I will get pissed off.

Alright then. I covered almost everything that needed to be covered I think. If not just ask me and I will answer as soon as I possibly can.

This will start once we have enough characters.

The roles that CAN be played~

*~Floor Masters- 4 Slots Open

*~Guild Leader- Open Always(You have to make it)

*~Guild Member- Open Always

Remember, not everybody can be a Beta-Tester either

Species that CAN be played~

*~Human

*~Fairy (which are three inches tall)

*~Elf

*~Werewolf

*~Nymph

*~Selkie

*~Demi-Genie

*~Satyr

Not too many of each species please, I would like to keep it as even as possible.

How the 'Gifts' are distributed

I will hand them out as I see fit. If your character is OP in their bio, they will either be turned away or get a crappy gift.

No sexiness times, the furthest you can go is kissing.

I think I covered everything on that end as well now. If you have any questions, please ask.

Thank you for reading this roleplay, I really hope it pans out. Please, please please, be active! I will check activity rates and if you aren't active for two days I WILL kick you unless you let me know via private messaging.

Paris examined the headset that would take her into the world of Threshold. She had been a Beta Tester, but she couldn't tell if anything would be the same. She slipped it on, and entered the world. Checking her inventory, she saw the note. "I thought the whole 'being trapped' was a joke," she said, concerned. "This can't be legal. The government would never allow people to be trapped here against their will...Luckily, I know how to make a guild. I can use that, and gain members dedicated to finding a way in and out of this game on demand."

@Lucky Wanderer @Epax @Cloud Nagasake @Yellow Swan @Hauvlex @Void Elemental

Ian put on his headset. Created his character, and checked his inventory. He then read the note he had. "There's no way that I'll actually be TRAPPED in here. Thats impossible!" He tried to look for the log out button but he couldn't find it. "Well crap. I guess I really am trapped in here." Ian frowned "They did warn me when I bought this though. I wish there was a way to get out of here."

"They actually managed to pull it off...well kudos to them", Neal said under his breath as he made his way up the hill. Though it may be hard to believe, Neal actually had read the fine print at the end. If anything it was probably the fine print that had sealed the deal for him when he became a beta tester. Chaos had always found a way to amuse Neal, and where would one find more chaos than in a world like this? Now all he had to do was survive and make his way around. As if it would be that easy.

Neal took a moment to sit down once he had reached the top of the hill. He watched as a small group of people walked through the fields, huddled up together like a flock of sheep. Maybe they thought that as long as they stuck to one another they would be okay? Guilds were a must sure...but you couldn't help and wonder just how loyal people would stay to each other when the going got tough.

As if in response to his train of thought, one from the group was suddenly pushed away by the others. It was then that they began having a angry exchange about how to 'survive'. Neal closed his eyes and let his head hang back for a moment as he listened on to the others argue off in the distance. Oh yeah...that group was in it for the long haul now weren't they...

Charlotte was reading the manual, double checking everything was right. Her new step brother walked in snatching the paper from her hands.

"Hey, I was reading that!" She folded her arms under her average bust. Her step-brother peeked over at her computer.

"Reading a Beta-Tester's blog is cheating."

"No it's not." She snatched the manual back, "I'm joining the game as a guy, there is nothing in the rules saying I can't be a little resourceful. Besides..." Charlotte began pulling her hair into a low ponytail. "I only read about making a guild." She sat down on her bed. "See ya on the other side." She smirked, pulling the headset on.

For a moment she felt her body go limp, and could swear someone moved her. Probably just her step-brother putting her into a better position. The blackness turned to a lit white room. The only thing in there was a white desk and sitting behind it, more like floating, was a female demi-genie with black hair and gold eyes. All the clothes that she wore was a black high-neck halter bikini top embroidered with red, turquoise, and gold beads.

"That's beautiful." Charlotte leaned in closer to examine the Demi-Genie's clothes. When she did this the Demi-Genie looked at her.

"Hello new player, and welcome to Threshold. I am here to help with character creation."

"This is so awesome!" Charlotte squealed. Everything looks and feels so real. She looked at the lower half of the Demi-Genie. The visual effects for the lower half was absolutely stunning, the plasma smoke swirling and floating, even leading it's end to a tall, slender lidded vase.

"What gender would you like to be?" The Demi-Genie asked.

"Male." A rain of Bokeh colors came down on her, and once it lifted her gender changed. Charlotte was speechless for a moment.

"This isn't confusing at all..." She awkwardly and confusingly chuckled.

"Please choose a class." Charlotte read through each class and settled on Warrior.

"Please choose a race." Charlotte 'tried on' each race, each time the Bokeh effect happened. She settled on an elf race, liking the 'low light' bonus.

"We generated your appearance based off of your own features and commonality based on your saved data. Feel free to change specific features on your character." Charlotte stared at herself, swinging her weapon in hand. Her build looked bigger, but she didn't feel any extra strength.

"Nah, this is good!" She smiled at herself. "I'm kinda hot. Eh, I hope I don't fall for myself." Charlotte giggled then stuck her tongue out at the Demi-Genie. The Demi-Genie's pleasant expression did not change. Guess she really is not a real person.

"Please choose a name for your character." This part took her the longest but determined she should choose something similar to her real name for sake of responsiveness.

"Charlie."

There was silence for a good while before an accepting upbeat tune rung.

"Charlie has been accepted. Your new life begins now. Good Luck, adventurer Charlie." The Demi-Genie waved good-bye to Charlotte, and the room began to peel away in strips.

Charlotte tried to go through the tutorial as fast as she could. Once done, she created her guild. Try and get members while there still isn't any ridiculously famous guilds. Satisfied by the name, Dragon's Nest, she began looking for members. Instead she found people crying, and angrily ranting. What the? She saw a nearby vampire girl comforting a Nymph.

"Excuse me, but what's going on here?" The Vampire girl looked at her.

"Haven't you read the message in your inbox? There is no way to leave the game!" The vampire girl choked out the last few words as she began sobbing.

Charlotte gave the girls some space, perching herself against a tree. She opened the letter, reading each disturbing word one after another. Charlotte reread the letter over a dozen times. Each time her brain slowly began understanding the situation. She closed her inbox. This can't be right. Charlotte brought up the menu, the log out button just an empty space.

"What the hell..." A gift? No filing missing persons reports... My physical body is gone? That feeling of movement when I turned on the game was my body being sucked in?! Charlotte's face froze. What did it mean by can't change back? Charlotte reopened her inbox but instead now the letter was erased and replaced with a card.

The gift of controlling other's emotions?! What does that even mean?

Below her feet she felt a small rumble; it's not safe here. Some people were quickly leaving while other's look to have given up. I hope he never made it into the game. Charlotte took in a deep breath,

"Everyone please, it's not safe here. We need to leave here now. I know many of you are scared and feeling hopeless, but if you want a chance to ever return then you need to stay alive! Now everyone get up and start moving we need to get somewhere safe." Not all, but players began getting up and moving. Charlotte even found herself in a group of people, they must of thought being with her was better than by themselves.

"I know we're all pretty low level and most likely beginners, so have whatever weapons and magic you got ready. If anyone has information about what we should expect or do, it would be nice if you let us in on it..."

Charlotte began leading her group in a single filed, slow jog with only one thought lingering.

New life begins now? What assholes.

Vincent looked around his bedroom, staring towards the blank walls around him before sitting on his mattress. Sighing deeply, he proceeded to open a box that sat beside him, revealing a headset. He slowly turned the headset around, looking at it from every angle, then let out a slight sigh.

"Damn it. This thing better be worth the money I spent on it." A scowl formed on Vincent's face as he thought about how much he had to spend just to get this headset, and all to play one game. "Well, whatever. Doesn't matter now, I guess. Let's just start the game and relax or somethin'."

Vincent put on the headset, and began to log in to the game - Threshold. He didn't have any idea how he should make his character, so he simply made it to closely resemble him. Along with this, he also had no idea what he should name his character. Everything he came up with in the moment sounded too stupid or too bland. In the end, he just went with the only name he really liked: Vincent. Although he wasn't sure if the name would be taken or not, he made it through character creation with little issue. "Guess it's still early enough for the normal names to not be taken." He thought.

As his character's body materialized into the new world, he noticed almost immediately that something was amiss - everywhere he looked, he saw players staring into a small screen in front of them, some of them appearing to be a little scared, others even biting their nails. "The hell's up with them?" He thought. He proceeded to open the main menu to look around at the game's options. However, before opening anything other than the base menu, he noticed something strange. There was a blank space at the bottom of the menu. "Huh. Looks like something's missing. Probably some feature you get later. Well, whatever." He continued to look through his menus.

After a few minutes, he began to look in his inventory. He had expected to see a weapon or armour of some sort, but instead the only thing inside was a letter. He opened it and began to look at it. At first, he had decided he would skim through the letter, just gleaming certain pieces of info that might prove useful for him later. That was until he finished reading through the first paragraph. For a moment he paused, staring blankly at the piece of paper. It all began to sink in as he stood still, continuing to look at the paper.

"Oh... Shit..." He said. "I did not see this coming. So we're all stuck here in this game? With no way to exit?" He asked, though with no reply. After another moment, he continued to read the letter, learning about the guild system that was in place.

"Oh... So the guilds are important after all. Here I thought I would just make one so I couldn't be invited to any others. Double shit... Does this mean I'm gonna have to be responsible for people?" He thought to himself. Another moment passed, afterwards deciding to continue reading the letter. He skimmed through the parts that followed, feeling that he had read most of what mattered. He noticed something about 'Gods', 'Demon Kings', and 'Floor Masters' but decided he would read more on them in a bit. Finally, he reached the part detailing something called 'Gifts'.

"Well, let's see here. Total Obediance? Now that sounds pretty neat. Wouldn't want to run into that person. Ah, blah blah blah, make itself known, blah blah blah, might think it's useless, a~nd blah." He noted before tossing the letter from his hands. He took another glance to his surroundings. He seemed to be in a plain, with small hills rising from the grounds at certain points. People seemed to be in despair. Probably because of that letter.

"Oh, wait, wait a sec. That letter had something else in it, right? Something about demon masters or something? God kings? I dunno, lemme get it out again." He said aloud. Though it was doubtful anyone was actually listening to him.

However, when he opened his inventory again, the letter was no longer there. Instead there was a card. He decided to retrieve it and see what it was. "Ah... Let's see. Your gift: The power to turn small objects into gold." He looked over the card again, turning it over to see if there was anything else.

There wasn't. Vincent scratched his head for a moment, then sat down. "Well, let's review. First, I seem to be trapped here." He looked around for a moment before continuing. "We all are, actually. Second, I can turn small things into gold, and that power is supposed to get stronger as I do. Sounds neat enough. And thirdly..." He hesitated for a moment before continuing. "I screwed myself out of learning about those 'floor demons' or whatever."

He sat still for another minute, until a rumble began to flow through the ground, seemingly getting stronger from behind him. People began to leave the area around him, choosing to run away from what seemed to be the source of the quake.

"... Damn..." He muttered, before standing to his feet and leaving the area, following the other players.

"Guu... How the hell does this..?"

Toriel Varens, successor of the Varens line of jewelry, fiddled with the small headset in his hands while muttering to himself with a look of frustration plastered on his face. This was probably the first gaming system he had held in his hands since he was a child -- and even then, he really only held that thing... Expecting him to be able to figure out that it was to be placed on his head and turned on after plugging it into the outlet in the room would have been impossible.

"To think that something like this would get in the way of my duty as an elder brother..! Shit..!" Practically fuming, Toriel placed the headset back on top of his younger sister's bed slowly turned his eyes over to her desk. On top of the desk sat the only means he would turn on that accursed device... A letter, written by his sister. "Fuck... That's the only way, isn't it?" As if the thought of opening the letter was worse than even the most vile of poisons, Toriel's face contorted slightly as he turned the rest of his body, and took a step off the bed.

After only a couple of steps, and deep breathing to help with his consentration, he arrived in front of the letter with his eyes shut. 'You can do this Toriel. It's for her. She wants you to set up that character. She entrusted this to you!' Persuading himself mentally, he opened his eyes... Only to be blinded, and fall backwards with a loud "GUAAAAHGH!". Thankfully, his parents were'nt home to hear his outburst, so he could safely recover after about a minute of deep breathing. The reason for his scream was what was written on the cover of the letter.

Instructions for brother~!

Playfully written in multiple colors, it sat, untouched... Unsoiled by anything in this world. All that had blessed the cover of that letter was his younger sister's pure intentions. He could practically see her pouring her love into each letter, thinking that it would be pretty in his eyes... 'Kuu..!' Bringing both of his fists to the ground as blood flowed from his eyes, Toriel reached up to the chair unsteadily. His body was yelling at him to stop, to keep that letter's contents hidden from the world... Every inch of his being wanted him to take the letter, frame it, and keep it on his desk for the next couple of years... Or perhaps even make a shrine for it and dedicate offerings to it every so often.

"But I... I can't do that..! Shit..!" His sister had entrusted him with the job of creating her character the day of the game's release. To wait until the day after, or to even be one hour late would be unacceptable. All of the good names would be taken by insufferable douches who claim multiple good names per account, only to use none of them. And so... One hand at a time... He crawled up the desk, with his legs limp and trembling below him. His breathing, now rough, practically came out in visible huffs as he then reached for the letter with shaking hands...

With his own hands... He unstuck the smily-face sticker that sealed the envelope shut.

~15 minutes later

"It... It worked!" It had taken him 10 minutes to recover from 'defiling' his little sister's letter, and another 5 to decipher his sister's adorable writing to set up the console, but he had finally arrived within the game's character creation area: a white room with a genie-like woman standing off to the side.

"Hello new player, and welcome to Threshold. I am here to help with character creation."

"O-Oh. Yeah. Hey." Stuttering slightly at the clarity of the girl's voice, Toriel straightened himself up and brought his attention to the Demi-Genie. The thought that she wasn't another player didn't even cross his mind.

"What gender would you--"

"Ah, see, my sister wanted me to make this character for her and listed the description for me, so could I customize it myself?"

Interrupting the assistant who nodded lightly in assent, a small 3D customizer appeared in front of Toriel. There were quite a lot of settings to fiddle with, so he readily asked the demi-genie any questions he had. After an unknown amount of time, his creation was finished.

Her face was fierce with thin, angular eyes that seemed to pierce through anyone they looked at.

She had beautiful yet strong features, like the aura of a lioness was imbued into her visage.

Her skin was tanned and lightly toned, as to give her an amazonian appearance.

In contrast to her skin was her wild, long white hair done into a ponytail; it was bright, and swayed naturally whenever the avatar was rotated.

On her back were a pair of incredibly detailed, wispy red wings which seemed to be made out of flames. Toriel had gone into manual customization for the entire avatar, but these wings in particular were payed special attention to.

Matching her fiery wings was her class: Elementalist. It was a class which specialized in changing the environment, with Spells that changed depending on the caster's surroundings... Or so the demi-genie had explained. No doubt, his sister intended to specialize in Volcano-ish terrains... Not that it was any of Toriel's business.

As for the fierce girl's species... It was a "Fairy". As expected of his 7 year old sister, she still had the tastes of a young girl.

Nodding to himself while looking over the pint-sized woman, Toriel pressed the 'Accept' button on the customizer before being stopped by a small error. In response, Toriel made a pensive pose with a hand on his chin.

"A name, huh..."

His sister hadn't given a request for a name, and as un-savvy to games he was, Toriel knew that inputting her real name was no good. But... "Maybe something like mine is fine..?"

Without further ado, Toriel inserted 'Torin' into the name entry, and accepted the character once again. Satisfied with the lack of errors this time around, Toriel turned towards the Demi-Genie, waiting for a moment before speaking up.

"So, what no--"

"Torin has been accepted. Your new life begins now. Good Luck, adventurer Torin."

With the sensation of his body falling through the ground, Toriel -- now Torin -- entered "Threshold".

Felix was stressed out, he had two part time jobs, and had to look after his little sister, and sick mother. He was in a bad state. He was unhappy, and couldn't find happiness, even in his old favorite things. It was his birthday a week ago, and his mother bought him a game system online, through some game site. Felix remembered the feeling of holding the box in his hands, his mother had gotten herself up just to get him something that would make him happy again. A tight feeling of regret surged through him, his unhappiness was affecting his mother and probably her health. He smiled on accepting the gift.

Now it was a week later, and he was on the edge of depression, no escape from the torment of his daily life. He loved his mother and sister dearly, but he needed 'something' for himself. A smirk crossed his face as he unboxed his copy of the new game, that just released 'Threshold'. He'd been too busy to look up the game in details, but it must be like all the others he used to play with his father, right? So he plugged it in, putting in the game, and placing his headset on his head, he sat in his computer chair, and waited.

............................................................

He felt a lightness to his body, as everything went white. When his eyes began to adjust, he found himself in his new virtual space. There was a odd-looking woman sitting at a desk, she smiled as he entered.

"Hello new player, and welcome to Threshold. I am here to help with character creation." She began to speak as he walked closer.

"Hey." Felix remarked in return.

"What gender would you like to be?" She inquired.

"Male."

"Please choose a class."

Felix looked through a long list of interesting looking classes, but seeing as he was new to the game, he decided to go for the most simplistic of classes. "Warrior."

"Please choose a race."

After a moment, Felix was confused as to what to choose, but, since he usually liked to go after his own appearance, it'd be best to just go.. "Human."

"We generated your appearance based off of your own features and commonality based on your saved data. Feel free to change specific features on your character."

Felix looked at his reflection, it being the main thing in this room. He stretched out his arms, and felt his hair, tussling it a bit, everything was so realistic.

"No. This is good." He said with a smile.

"Please choose a name for your character."

Hmm, I look like myself, so I suppose. "Felix."

"I'm sorry, the 'woman' smiled, that name has already been taken."

"Eh?" So early on? Felix took a moment then with a heavy heart he entered his father's old screen name. "Caspian."

"Caspian has been accepted. Your new life begins now. Good Luck, adventurer Caspian." She smiled to him.

Although she was just an AI, he couldn't help but smile back. "Thanks." He said as things went white again.

............................................................

Caspian opened his eyes again to find himself in an open field. He smiled. He's never been so far away from his troubles. He let himself slip away momentarily. Until he heard crying. What? He thought to himself. An Npc? He turned around to see a small elven girl sitting on a rock. It seemed like she was a player, how could-

"Are-are you alright?" Caspian got closer to the girl, kneeling to eye level.

"No! How could I be? We're stuck here." The girl sobbed.

She reminded him of his little sister in one of her fits. Caspian smiled in a friendly manner.

"What do you mean, your log off is bugged or something? That's only to be expected in a game so new, you can just-"

"NO!" She practically yelled at him.

Caspian backed off a bit in shock.

"Haven't you read your notification? We're all STUCK HERE!" After this she ran off.

Caspian was skeptical, but still he felt a heaviness in his heart, as he opened his note.

"Hello and welcome.."

After reading the note in it's entirety his knees give way, and in a panic, he pulled up the menu..

"No way, it's some sort of trick.. It has to be." He said as he saw that the log off option was completely gone.

Caspian felt an emptiness, then after giving himself a moment, he gave himself a moment to calm down, and filled the emptiness with determination. "I've got to find a way out of here." He stated, as he got up and started walking towards a small city in the distance.
