He nodded. “I’ve got an appointment for tomorrow love.” He murmured, kissing her head and held her to him. “Will you clean up and braid my hair today please?” He asked her quietly, looking tired.

Carmen kissed her head and smiled. “That sounds like a good idea huh? You wanna tell your father what we’re doing tomorrow?” She asked her, clearing her bowl for her. “Bjorn shipped Iskald to us about six months after everything happened… but we lost him last year.” She told him frowning. ‘So we’re gonna go pick up our new dog tomorrow.’ Asta finished.

Max nodded softly and gave him a small smile "Yeah I'll do the kids too, Halvdan has been begging me to do his even if his hair isn't very long." She said giving a light laugh

Ubbe frowned a bit at the loss of Iskald but gave a small smile "Oh really? I'm sure you'll pick out an amazing dog." He said softly "Do you have any particular kind in mind?"

He smiled tiredly and griped her a little tighter as he felt something click just by moving his leg back.

“We’ve already got one. We’re getting a Newfoundland.” She told him quietly and went to get dressed, leaving carmen alone with him who walked over and draped her arms over his shoulders from behind, “it’s gonna take her some time.”

Ubbe gave a small nod and sighed heavily "I know it is....I'm not upset with her in any way. I'm upset with myself." He muttered shaking his head a bit

Max frowned softly at his tightening grip "Ivar?" She asked in a concerned voice just as Frida came knocking on the door 'Daddy? I finish my cereal.'

He groaned in pain as his eyes rolled back a little, pain quickly ripping up his spine as well, not even hearing Frida at the door.

Carmen frowned and kissed his cheek. “Come on. Go get dressed. I wanna go before traffic gets bad.”

Max frowned as she watched him and quickly sat up "Frida darling go to your brother Baldur and wake him okay?" She said as calmly as possible before she got up and checked Ivar over "Ivar....Ivar do I need to call someone?"

Ubbe nodded some and got up to get changed giving a small frown when he found his clothing still on the closet giving a heavy sigh. He got dressed in a nice button up and slacks like he normally always wore.

He groaned in pain but wasn’t moving at all and starting to breathe shallow, his hands twitching but that was the only
Movement being made.

Carmen waited til he got back down and she took them both out to her Fiat, getting Asta in the back. “Baby you’re gonna have to sit behind me. Daddy has to push his chair the whole way back to fit in this car. They’re not made for giants.” She told her.

Max frowned and quickly picked up her phone to dial an ambulance explaining the situation before she went to make sure the kids were up and away from their room.

Ubbe looked at the tiny car and chuckled some "You finally got one eh?" He murmured remembering how she had always wanted one. He got in and pushed the seat back doing his best to get somewhat comfortable in the car

She nodded and frowned. “You’ll see why when we hit Rome. That Jeep you either own or hired is not going to fit in the streets.” She muttered, glancing back to see Asta was still miserable.

By the time she got back to the room he was hardly breathing at all and he’d completely passed out now… he came to again hours later to the sound of beeping and various other machines, looking around to see where he was, no memory of the morning past going back up to wake up max. Trying to move to sit up but finding he couldn’t at all.

Ubbe chuckled some but gave a small nod "I remember." He murmured before looking to Asta giving a small sigh "So what are some things you like Asta?" He asked softly in norwegian.

Max came into the room after getting off the phone with Hvitserk. She saw he was awake and made her way to sit next to him "Babe you gotta stay still." She said softly taking his hand in hers "They're running tests now because they didn't find any breaks within the x-rays."

He frowned some and looked up at her. “I can’t move.” He hoarsed out. “I can’t move.” He told her more panicked this time, having to grab the bed sheets to try and pull himself to sit up a little but past his waist he couldn’t feel a thing and he was starting to panic.

Carmen chewed on her lip while she drove, trying to leave them to it but she had to help Asta out a couple times.

Max frowned more and cupped his face to stop his moving "Ivar stop! You will hurt yourself more! The doctor will be in soon okay?" She said in her calmest voice possible

Ubbe gave her a small smile thankful she would atleast somewhat talk to him. As they got to lunch and sat down he glanced over the menu and smirked a bit "So what are you getting Carmen?"

He frowned and just watched her, shaking his head. "I can't move." He muttered, "Get him in here now." He told her, panicking more. They had known for a while now that at some point he wouldn't be able to walk anymore but he wasn't ready yet and the thought of it coming out of nowhere made him feel a little sick because it meant he was getting worse.

She hummed in response, looking over everything "Not sure yet... I'm not that hungry to be honest." She mumbled despite not having eaten breakfast.

Max nodded some and quickly went to grab the doctor. She came back with him ajd sat next to Ivar holding his hand tight in hers "Everything is going to be okay."

Ubbe raised an eyebrow and frowned some "Alright." He said softly before he sipped his water giving a heavy sigh as he started to beat himself up internally

He frowned and just held hers as tight as he could, feeling sick to his stomach as his doctor pulled up the MRI scans and explained that a crack in one of his vertebrae had now severed the spinal cord, eliminating his ability to walk far sooner than they had all expected it to 'Look Ivar, the good news is it's not the deterioration that we thought it was but obviously the bad news is that you won't be able to walk anymore.' He told him, "We'll get your papers sorted and a wheelchair brought round for you then you may go home." HE told them, nodding to Max and left them to privacy.

Carmen frowned some, reaching her legs across to brush against his, 'Mommy can I go stay with grampa this weekend?' She heard Asta ask and she just nodded "I'll give him a call and see what he's up to okay?" She told her, looking over at Ubbe "He's retired from running things now... Luca's taken over. Going on 6 months now." She murmured.

Max held him tight and took a deep breath letting a few tears fall. She wiped them quickly and turned to look at her husband frowning softly "Ivar?" She said softly as she noticed the shocked expression on his face

Ubbe frowned a bit when she asked to leave but gave a small smile happy to hear that she had a good relationship withbher grandparents "Thats good to hear, I can't believe he is going to get married. I still remember when he was running around flirting with every girl in sight."

He frowned and just stayed quiet, not sure what there even was to say right now, barely giving her hand a squeeze and stayed quiet for the rest of the time there, including the rest of the day and the following three weeks. All were filled with mostly silence and a few words every so often. He'd lost his independence now, at least most of it as he saw it, and with him not using his body the same way he was already starting to feel physically weaker from it. He headed out to the front door to wait for Sven to bring the car round so they could load the bags into it to take to the airport. The kids had been running round the house all morning, yelling excitedly about a holiday and he was hoping they would at least calm down once they got on the plane.

Ubbe had been back in their lives for three weeks when it happened. She'd been struggling with keeping it together around him as it was and then one morning after Asta had gone to see her grandfather, Carmen and Ubbe had had a row. All started over Carmen refusing to eat a piece of toast that Ubbe had made, insisting she was fine and not hungry but now she was trying to hold her head high and not give in but she had started feeling lightheaded while they were running errands in town and before she knew it she had collapsed outside a café.

Max smiled a bit at the children as she got the last of their things near the front door for Sven to pick up for them. Things had been extremely rough for her and Ivar as of late. She was trying to be there for him and assure him this would be okay but nothing pleased him anymore. He was so distant that it was almost as if he wasn't even there anymore.

Ubbe sighed softly as he walked down the street to a little cafè with Carmen hoping she would eat something there. He had caught on to her not eating quickly and tried everything he could to get her to open up. Though his attempts were unsuccessful to say the least. He got pulled from his thoughts when he heard a thud and went wide eyed finding Carmen on the ground "Carmen?!"

Baldur made his way downstairs grinning. “Mom… can we take snacks with us?” He asked. They’d only ever flown on private jets and were used to the life of luxury. “Hey, is dad gonna cheer up once we get there?” He asked her once they were out of earshot for him.

Carmen frowned and tried to get up without his help, pushing his hands off and carefully moved to use the wall to help. “I’m fine. Can we just get these errands done and go home?” She muttered frowning. She’d been dealing with this for months now and him suddenly appearing out of the blue had been rough on her but even more on Asta who was so unused to having more than one parent and it had caused carmens stress to spiral again

Max gave a small nod "Yes but only a few okay? Do not pack your entire back pack full of them." She said sternly knowing her eldest would do such a thing. She gave a heavy sigh when he asked about Ivar and gave a small nod "I'm sure he will sweetheart."

Ubbe frowned more as he stayed close to her and shook his head a bit "No you're going to sit down for a minute while I get you some water." He said taking a deep breath "What the hell is going on Carmen?"

He gave her the same guilty but innocent look that his father had perfected long ago. “Why won’t he talk anymore?” He asked her frowning some.

She tried to fight against him but he’d pushed her to sit down and she watched him disappear into the cafe to get them drinks, shaking her head some.

Max gave him a stern look still doing her best not to fall for his perfected technique "Your father...he is going through a lot in his head at the moment. I'll talk with him though okay? He is going to be just fine." She murmured before kissing his forehead gently "Now, go dumb that backpack full of snacks."

Ubbe came back with a bottle of water and sat her down frowning some "I'm not going to force you to eat, I won't make that scene here. Carmen you haven't really eaten since I came back, is this my fault? Is it because I came back?" He asked her concern littering his voice

Ivar started helping take bags out to the car with Sven, waiting til the kids were ready and made sure they all got in then got himself in with a lot of effort as well, leaning back and closing his eyes.

Carmen frowned and watched him, "I'm fine," She muttered, "I just want to go home Ubbe." She muttered, getting up to leave but frowned when he pushed her back down again

Max helped him as much as he would allow her and gave a small smile before kissing his cheek gently "You ready?" She asked quietly squeezing his hand gently

Ubbe frowned more and made her sit back down shaking his head some "No Carmen you are going to sit and rest. I will call a driver to come pick you up." He said seriously

She frowned feeling her temper coming up and smacking her in the face out of nowhere. “Stop it! Stop treating me like a child! I have done just fine without you for 8 years! Because you abandoned your family when we needed you!” She screamed at him, “And then you waltz back in and pretend everything is okay.”

He nodded tiredly and leaned back frowning. “Yeah. I guess so.” He muttered quietly, letting Frida cuddle in close to his side and just held her as much as he could.
