Viewpoint Unpopular roleplay opinions?

Compared with group interest checks, most 1x1 interest checks seem to lack variety. There appears to be a checklist of information people adhere to, and any deviation from the list is uncommon. As a result, they all read the same. It is rare to see one formulated around a creative concept or idea the way group checks are.

That’s because your supposed to come up with the plot together. Most 1x1s are built around a particular pairing, whether platonic or romantic.

So the pairing is the center focus with the plot being created with equal input from both partners. Or at least that’s the idea.

A group can’t do that because you have too many characters/players. So the GM has to flesh out the setting/plot beforehand.

It’s kinda of an apple and oranges comparison.

You aren't wrong on the purpose of 1x1 checks. I didn't really intend it as a comment on function. More my personal observation of a generalised lack of variation or creativity, which seems a little antithetical considering the nature of role play. Even many thread names are formulaic. Theres no reason it cant be done differently (not necessarily like group checks, either), and there are exceptions to the rule, but they don't appear to be common. But maybe I'm just being cynical :p

It seems to be "the way it's done" on this site and others, and it does serve purpose. I'm guilty of it myself. But it would be nice to see more "different".

In fairness there isn’t really a lot of variety in what you can do for 1x1s

it’s either (word) 1x1 search
a short list of the fandoms idea you have via a title
or a short list of the pairings types you want.

It’s meant to informative not really creative. Well the (word) 1x1 search a little less so but that’s why the other two.

I think the problem is the creativity comes out when people actually find partners. So they are very different you just can’t see that because the writing process isn’t publicly viewable in the same way as groups

I'm not sure if this has already been said, but making a single character sheet for twins makes me uncomfortable. Even though genetically they are the same person, their genetic similarity cannot be translated into the same personality, for instance.

Yeah this drives me nuts. I mentioned it before. XD It's so insulting. Even worse than a single character sheet is when they are constantly referred to as "the twins" in everything they do, because obviously they do the exact same things all the time.

On the topic of creatively done one x one interest checks, seeing something that’s too flowery or makes me click through five different tabs to get to what I want is a huge turn-off. As it’s been said above, I’m there just to gather information. A poem for a thread title doesn’t really tell me much.

As for one on ones not fostering creativity, I politely disagree. I find that one on ones are especially good for character development, whereas group rps excel at story development.

Oh I absolutely agree 1x1 fosters creativity. It was not a criticism of the medium. I only meant there doesn't appear to be much variety in the way the interest checks are written. Which seems to be a bit of an unpopular opinion ;D

Here a romantic unpopular opinion (whether in movies or roleplaying) Opposites don't attract. What I mean to say is, If your characters agrue, and bicker, and show many signs that they don't want to be together or are the worst for each other, that's not romantic. Romance is romantic! Showing love and admiration for one another is romantic.

please dont add more people to a conversation. What i mean is that we got 3 people that are new, talking to eachother in a setting. Someone comes in that is nee and wandering about, dont add them in. It would become overwhelming. I believe that once thats over, well go out own ways and then get the new guy in. Its overall smoother and less taxing, yknow?

I mean, I do agree to some extent! It's nice to see a bit of color, at least. I know that for me personally, by the time I've finished writing out all the plot ideas I have and all the genres or fandoms or AUs I want, I'm so DONE with the whole thing that I'd happily post it as a single run-on sentence if it meant I didn't have to write anymore. 🤣

Oh! What i hate is how most people lock away dark themes to 18+. Im 16 and i quite enjoy delving into gore and other topics. Self harm, rape themes, mental illness, etc. Not saying i like them but i can handle them. I feel that it should come down to maturity rather than actual age. Not saying that because im 16.

Honestly I think this has more to do with people wanting to cover their butts legally than any kind of commentary on maturity. This is especially true in the US: Parents are sue happy and some will look for any reason to do it, including writing "inappropriate" content with their little darling. To add to this, I just turned 30 and am a teacher. The idea that I could be writing those topics with my students (I know it's a long shot, but it's possible) makes me super uncomfortable. That's why I only write with people 18+.

In fairness self-harm and rape are triggering topics. I have found it’s less maturity in those cases as it is life experience. I am certainly going to hope you have no IRL experience with those issues at your age. But if you did I would feel uncomfortable talking to you about it as a strange adult twice your age.

Yeah your right.

I mean unpopular opinion maybe, but teenagers can also write "adult" topics with each other OR with someone who doesn't worry about age in either direction. I personally don't care about my partner's age. But I also don't do any kind of adult themes. It's mostly magical goat farms and international student exchanges. So if ya want to learn about international education I'm your gal. If you want to do something involving rape, that's a hard pass regardless of your age.

Hell nah, i dont do anything with that. What i mean is the topics surfacing and talking about it. My interests is more gore. Loved Attack on titan for it or walking dead. I enjoy incorporating some kinda monster eating people, yknow? I dont think i actually go into other themes. So, honestly i wouldnt delve into it.

When I do darker themes the characters are usually in their mid-twenties or even mid thirties (I can't take any male character romantically seriously if he's under 24) so it's less to do with the themes and more to do with that I doubt you'll be able to play a character that's closer to your parents age than you.

As you would imagine a 30 year old to be substancially more experienced to handle such situations or something, id imagine.

It's less to do with their real life age and more to do with experience. I've spent loads of time around older people, really talking to them and living with them, so I'm in a better position to role play a character like one of them compared to a teenager. However I've never been a part of the drugs/party life style and I've only ever been around one person who has, so I would find it difficult to properly explore. As such, very few of my characters are party animals.

An unpopular opinion I actually firmly believe in is 99 percent of the time we create our own problems. There is nothing that doesn't have a resolution.
Not exactly opinion but more along the lines of fact most pharmaceutical medication are very medieval and out dated. Chemical imbalances is not the reason for mental illness. Evolution is still happening with humans. The world will not end but humans will likely be extinct some point in the next hundred years.

So no. Just a hundred percent no. As someone who has met people with severe mental illness when they are off their medication and who has a mother who relies on medication to function with her own severe mental illness.

Alright, alright, alright.

I think some people do create their own problems, that is true. To say that's not true is probably a little silly, but it does depends on your definition of "creating your own problems". Also I do sometimes think people are a little too keen to rely on medication when other avenues are available.

Rae also makes a good point. My stepmother has servere chemical imbalances and it has major effects on her mental health, so medication definately can help in these cases.

yeah maybe I came on strong but I have dealt with people who had legitimate mental disorders (schizophrenia, etc) who refused to get help because they thought medication was evil. I have also seen my mom unable to get out of bed or in a damn near catatonic state cuz her medication was out of Wack.

Furthermore I had people tell me for years my own anxiety was just a lie I made up to get out of socializing. So that kind of dismissive attitude makes me legitimately angry because it endangers people.

Plus as a side note it doesn’t even have anything to do with roleplaying anyway. It just feels like a hurtful thing to say for no reason.

Um, excuse me? Do I need to report you? I was actually just watching an interesting lecture on how lithium for bi polar disorder was discovered. It was found by injecting the urine from people diagnosed into pigs. Yes, there is new evolution in medication that is showing that a lot of medication thought to help people is doing the opposite. I actually went to school and tool psychology and sociology. I have sever diploma's and degree's in this area? You really spouting off immaturity like that is just very very telling to how you are in general as a person.

People are moving to more neuro plastic forms of therapy.

Seriously dude I'm reporting you. Lol you are irritating on more than one platform on this site. You just love to tout people don't you.
Why not read some scholarly journals on the subject and educate yourself.

I apologies you got offended. Though, your response was very unnecessary.
Look, I don't think you need to report her. She was just upset and lashed out, it happens to us all.

This is a clear example of people creating their own problems. Your anxiety got in the way. You lashed out. You got bad consiquences.
