Fantasy Unnatural Academy

"Perhaps not panic like a monkey forced into a winged harness to start," Todd stated. "Okay, we got a monstrous thing coming from the ocean. Ocean means darkness, darkness means blindness, blindness means echolocation. Unless this is one of those things that can feel it's way across the ocean, which means I am going to need a different strategy. But, for now, let's try to amplify and concentrate some noise." He dashed across the beach, using his magic to augment his bodies' natural defense and offense, and speed. A megaphone hang from one lifeguard's chair, which he grabbed, and turned to the monster. A loud, piercing tone came from the device, which was suddenly amplified several hundred times, and focused through the cone towards the sea monster.

Mikhail drew his sword and ran toward the creature, along the way he shifted his features becoming a bit more feral and he got slightly bigger in anticipation of a fight. He slowed a distance from the creature and watched it, looking for Todd's noise attack to have any effect on the thing, if it did he would use the opportunity to strike.

Osto had fallen asleep on the beach. He had forgotten about Jessie. Now, when he woke up, he was cold and miserable. He coughed, and reabsorbed his bone blanket. He stood up, and realized that this had been a mistake. He heard screaming, however, and decided to see what was up.

The beast didn't seem to notice the high pitch or the noise of the device, but did seem to notice that the scream was intended for its ears. Todd's efforts failed to injure the beast in the slightest, but managed to cause it to cease attacking and turn towards Todd.

"PTASHEERRGHLISH"

A noise came from the monster, seemingly, at first, it was just an animal noise it made, but some of the mages there considered, for a brief moment it might be trying to communicate something.

This thing came charging at Todd, knocking people to the side or trampling over them on its way, but got intercepted by Mikkish who rammed it from its right, in a mystical speed dash, not harming it much, but startling it so it stumbled a little to the side and turned its attention to Mikkish. The monster then proceeded to try slashing at Mikkish, who dodged and would try striking back, but even with his physical buff, there was no way him and his magic enhanced punches could bring this monster down.

And as if this wasn't bad enough, the mercs, who had started shooting at the monster, then began shooting at everything and everyone else crazily. One was seen on the ground and seemed to be cracking up, like this was all a joke, and another who was wearing no helmet wore a massive grin, while his eyes seemed unfocused on the situation, and his mind seemed absent.

Osto created bone swords, and made a shield as well. It was large and Roman. He charged at the mercs as they continued firing, blocking their bullets with his shield. He slammed into them, pushing them aside. He then saw the monster Mikkish was fighting. He quickly tucked away his sword, and created a spear. He held it firmly, and threw it at the beast.

I gave a loud groan as I had been laying in my room blankly staring at the ceiling no idea what to do with my free time. I was about to give up and just sleep until I had heard talks about a beach or something going on with people in the hallway. I thought a moment to myself. Didn't seem like a bad idea. I rummaged through my bags getting out a swimsuit. "Hopefully this thing still fits. Haven't worn it since the last time I swam in a pool." I gave a heavy sigh heading in the bathroom to change. I wore my swimsuit merely putting my dress over it so I could walk around. I made sure to put my boots on and grab a towel before I headed outside walking my way to the beach. Though the delightful mood was brought down to hell hearing screams of fear and pain instead of excitement. The gunshots echoing as I see mercs shooting almost aimlessly like they've lost it. Doesn't stop there when I notice the reason for all the screams. The sight almost made me toss my cookies but I held it in and threw the towel to the ground grabbing my knife. Squishy guts like that cut easily....well I hoped. I saw Joe and the other not that far away and made my way towards them using the fleeing crowd as bullet shield from the rampaging mercs.

Blood spattered on Nia, Joe and the others as people were dying all around them. As soon a Mikkish dodged yet another one of the monsters attempts to impale him, blood spurted out of his shoulder as one of the Merc's rifle shot through it. Mikkish staggered and clutched his shoulder, leaving him open to being cut in two or skewered by this rotting abomination, but luckily Osto's spear flew through the monsters arm first, attaching it to its rib cage.

This only prevented the monster from using its arm for a minute until it managed to break its arm free, shattering Osto's spear. Osto himself, despite knocking a few mercs on their asses, would find his move to be a foolish one, as three armored, well armed, psychotic mercenaries now had their attention on him. One was even striking at his shoulder with an electric stun rod from behind. There was a reason they all had electric stun rods, as electric jolts briefly halt magic ability in all but the most trained and experienced mages, as well as briefly stun the body of course.

"Alright, stand back" Said a preppy looking guy with a cross necklace, as he walked up with two other similar looking guys "We can handle this." He walked past Joe Mikhail and Todd with his posse and they all began casually walking up to the monster, full of bravado. That was only until one got scared, yelled "Fuck this" and turned to run only to catch a bullet in the neck.

"Johny!" The leader yelled, before the monster galloped up behind the last two and sliced cleanly through them both. It then threw one of the mages it had been strangling with its tentacles, and threw the upper severred half of her body, sending it flying across the beach to land right at Joe's feet.

And the monster didn't even hesitate or stop for a moment to enjoy its killing, it just started galloping again, this time in Joe, Mikhail, and Todd's direction.

Todd gripped the megaphone again, and aimed it at the giant sea monster.

"Alright, so," he began. "For a human, pain starts at 125 decibels. A jet taking off is 133 db. Let's see if I can max the sound at 150..."

He activated the wail, using his natural magic to make the noise even louder than usual, this time not trying to focus it into a narrow attack, allowing the sound to spread in front of him. Joe, Mikhail, and Todd only heard a little of the sound, while Todd grit his teeth to keep the sound from killing them.

"You're a fucking sea monster. Echolocation. Sound. You use it. NOW CHOKE ON IT!"

The monster had halted from the attack. It shook in pain... it was stunned. But only for a few seconds. After that, it immediately straightened up and began its charge once more.

I stood there, dumbstruck... this... thing... was killing everything. It was ripping people apart. It... threw a corpse at my feet... it was going to kill us. It was charging for us right now. Todd was doing his best to stop it. But he was just tiring himself out at this point. Mikkish, he managed to knock it aside for a few moments, but that was it. We... were doomed, weren't we...? We're going to die.

...I might... but... maybe I could at least buy a few seconds... a few precious seconds. It would be better to go down fighting, and protecting people I cared about, then just standing here while death was literally charging straight towards me. I breathing slowed and my heartbeat slowed. "Both of you, run, now, I'll buy you as much time as I am able." I flung my clothing off of my scythe onto the ground and then rushed forward, right into the creature's path. I stopped several feet from it and held my scythe out in front of me. "If you want to harm them, then you'll have to get through me first!" I didn't know if it understood me. If it did... would it even care...? Probably not.

Soon, it was upon me. Just another few feet and it'd end me... but... I wasn't afraid. I... had a feeling that everything would be alright. Maybe it's just my brain trying to keep my body under control, to not let my survival instincts kick in and say 'Run away already!'. I held onto that feeling. I'm... I'm going to be alright, I'm going to go back to the dorms. I'll keep having my after school lessons with Mr. Nakashima and make all sorts of things. We'll all eat in the cafeteria together. Todd'll get annoyed by one of my stupid puns, or pull a bunch of pranks, Mikkish'll suggest we do something crazy, Mikhail'll just pop up out of nowhere, Rue'll just sit there and probably think we're a bunch of idiots... "Yeah... I'm not dying today..." I muttered under my breath.

Finally, the creature was upon me. It swung down, ready to cut me clean in two. When... it was stopped. A brilliant white barrier had appeared between me and it, stopping it in its tracks. "...I'm not dying today, you hear me!?" Somehow... I knew, this wasn't someone else's work. It was my own. I had made this barrier between me and it. "I won't let you harm my friends either, go back from wherever you came from!" The barrier expanded outward suddenly, throwing the beast backwards. The barrier melted away and I brought my scythe in front of me. I didn't know how well I could control my magic, nor how well it would even stop this thing, but there wasn't anyway that I was going to run away now!

Osto groaned when he was stunned. He flew done. Great, he thought to himself. However, he began to concentrate now. If he could pull this off....Osto focused on his bones, willing them to move on their own. He needed to get out of this, but he wasn't sure if he could.

I stood stunned a second seeing Joe bring up some kind of shield. I give a small smirk. "Let's see if I can do anything." I pulled up an illusion surrounding me. It made me appear to shift in place so anyone would have a hard time knowing exactly what position I was in unless they focused. I used the timing of Joe's knockback to try and run up with my knife aiming to cut as deep as I could at the monster. Was already covered in blood I could care less if there was more. I kept on eye on its arms as I ran knowing if it only swung at me my illusion wouldn't matter.

The monster was thrown back by Joe's explosive light magic, and...blinded by it. Perhaps Todd's mistake was assuming its main senses pertained to hearing, as the beast was only merely annoyed by Todd's attempts. When Rue sank her knife into the monster, as can be expected, it did little, but she was too close for the creature to slice her, and it had been blinded. It thrusted its elbow at her, but if she moved quickly, the mosnter was open to more attacks.

"Otherworldly monster." Came the voice of a man in dark robes, one of the Children of Stardust. He had just entered the scene, walking through the corpse-littered beach, as the mercs suddenly halted their gunfire and just...stood there.

The monster, now thrashing and swinging its blade arms blindly, was suddenly shrouded in a black aura, almost like smoke.

"Fire mages! Now is your chance!" He shouted, prompting Mikkish, holding his shoulder in pain, to attempt pyrokinesis. Like the novice he was, even with the black aura spell to enhance flamability, all this caused was a small pathetic fire to catch on the beast, harming it, but in no way consuming it.

But there were other mages on the beach, who had yet survived, and a couple knew pyrokinesis, or simple fire magic, and soon after Mikkish' attempt had failed to do much, the monster burst in an explosion of flames, incinerating it.

I sigh heavily noticing the cut didn't do much but I sure as hell was surprised when it was covered in some kind of black viel. I was a bit too confused to notice what was really happening until the creature caught on fire I turned to jump back in time to avoid being in the burst of flames. "Holy hell warn a person will ya?" I huff getting up and looking around making sure nothing had caught on fire. "....Ugh I hate burns. "

Osto walked over to the burned remains of the monster. He bent down next to it, and placed a hand on it. "Rest well," he told him. He had managed to break free through sheer force of will, and now had had his magic back. He then glared at the children of stardust. "Fools," he murmured.

Since Joe stepped forward and blasted the creature back with his magic Mikhail sat down, seeing that it was under control, and shortly after the creature was incinerated by other mages on the beach. With the creature defeated he put his hands over his head and clapped before getting up and walking to the creature's remains, prodding them with his foot and murmuring to himself about it being 'to amateurish' and 'not his work'

I fell to my knees as the monster went up in flames and the mercenaries were incapacitated. Everything was okay... we... we were all alive. Well... not... everyone, unfortunately. I cast my gaze around to the carnage and destruction around me, people, lying dead. Some weren't even in one piece... that... thing took so many lives this day... and it somehow drove those men to insanity. I... just couldn't believe it.

A sharp pain suddenly went through my head. "Agh!" I held my head... my vision grew hazy, and then completely dark. "I-I... I can't see!" I was definitely conscious, I could still smell the blood and the burning corpse of the monster in the air, feel the blood and sand beneath me. I blindly brought my hands to my face. "O-Oh god..." I was quivering in fear. What happened? How did this happen? Why was I blind!? The pain grew sharper in my head and ringing filled my ears. It grew so excruciating, that I fell forward and lost consciousness.

Todd felt a migraine coming along. A monster. From the ocean. Vulnerable to fire. Makes perfect sense.

Groaning, he sat next to Mikhail, massaging his forehead.

Mikhail looked over at Todd with a bit of concern, reaching a hand out to put on his back "Are you alright?"

Sirens rang out in the distance, but all knew where they were going.

"Its probably best we all leave." The Stardust man said, knowing the police meant mercs were also on their way, and there would be a lot of explaining to do, possibly resulting in innocent people being locked away.

"Good idea" Mikkish said, his shoulder still bleeding, though Mikkish was trying to stop it by pressing his towel against it.

"You okay?" The man asked Mikkish

"No this is nothing, though if you could help him out" Mikkish pointed to Joe "I'd probably have a hard time carrying him"

By the time the cops and mercs pulled up, they came to a sunlight beach littered with corpses, and a ball of flames which had recently been the monster who killed so many. There were still people on the beach, waiting for the cops to show up so they could give their account of what happened. The mercs were still paralyzed, though they were standing upright and uttering words of madness.

But Mikkish and his newfound friends were not there. They were already in the city, away from the beach, dodging mercs still as a man with a gunshot wound and a Stardust member carrying a passed out student over his shoulder looked suspicious.

"This way. We have healing mages who could help you both." Suggested the Stardust mage

Mikkish thought there couldn't really be much harm in following.

They all came to what looked like a townhouse just like the townhouses to either side of it, but it had a symbol which looked like a witch hat with a star on it, and its door was wide open. This simple, actually pretty ghetto looking place, was a Temple of the Cosmos, as the Children of Stardust called it, and there were few others on the island.

The inside was dark, and the only small amount of lighting was from floating orbs of light, created with illusion magic. They had to be as quiet as possible as a few members on the ground floor were meditating.

When they got to the second floor, Joe was laid down on a couch, as one of the members began healing Mikkish' gunshot wound.

I gave out a loud sigh once on the second floor. "Well that was a royal mes. At least we got our butts saved." I lean against a wall. "And...thank you. For both the help and the healing. Not to be rude but who are you guys again? It's hard to keep track of what exactly is going on at the moment." I say looking to one of the members that brought them there.

"We are the Children of Stardust. You are standing in a Temple of the Cosmos; a place of worship for us." Said a man wearing a pointy hat and robes. Though he was young, he looked a lot like a wizard. In fact, everyone here was wearing pointed hats, just like one would expect a wizard or witch to wear.

"Damn, you're talented." Mikkish said to the woman who was healing him. The bullet and shards had just leaped out of his wound and onto a plate, all because of the magic.

"The Universe surrounds us, and we are so attached to this one floating rock that its easy to forget we are part of it. One with it. Even you and me are made from stardust."
