Realistic or Modern Unity of the Gifted

Alexandria

I was staring, wide eyed. "Thank you for protecting me..." I said in my soft, airy voice. "You didn't have to, but you did..." I suddenly hugged him.

You're already dead

Daichiro was less than prepared for the hug, and he found himself frozen once in her embrace. He didn't know what to do. No girl had ever hugged him before, so he just stayed still and let her embrace him. When it was over, he didn't do anything. He just looked at her, and then looked away as he slowly continued walking towards home.

"Don't worry about it," he said over his shoulder.

Alexandria

I nodded and continued to walk the remaining way to his home. Once we reached it, I stopped with him. "If you would like, you could walks with me to school in the morning...?"

She was pretty sure that she could leave now. Everyone else seemed to have left, including the teacher who had rushed past her. In fact, the only reason she was waiting around was so that she could reclaim her gloves. She was going to have to go into her teacher's desk and she was a little worried about getting caught. Suddenly, she was being poked.

"Huh?" Philippa looked up in surprise to find a boy standing over her, "English?" She swapped to English, "I speak a little English, yes. Pretty badly but..." She shrugged. Her English wasn't awful but it wasn't great either. It was just kind of eh. Her accent shone through when she spoke it as well because she couldn't pronounce the soft i's.

Leaning against the wall, Philippa got up and stared at the boy in front of her. She hid her hands behind her back.

"Can I help you with something?" she asked.

Kazou took a sigh of relief, ' Finally someone normal ! ' He thought, forgetting that he was the abnormal one among this bunch. "Erm.. yea! Any idea which this classroom is? ", asked Kazou while showing a slip. It was in Japanese and Kazou couldn't understand a thing that was written on it. " Oh and I hope I am not too late, perhaps by 20 minutes or so ", added Kazou. His assumption was accurate though only to his watch.

As Kazou waited for a reply, he felt a little intrigued. " Why might a foreigner like me be here? Is this my competition? ", he thought. Though Kazou was still wondering why might she be sitting outside the class. Someone like him must be scoring well and there should be no reason for them to be punished. " hmmm I wonder why ? " he mummer in a low tone, not sure if his voice was audible enough for the girl to hear. Surely Kazou hoped it was not but who knew. Well the only thing Kazou cared for right now was finding his new class and to know why the girl was here. " Perhaps a little handshake to solve this mystery ", though Kazou. A little sly grin came to his face. Well Kazou was surely willing to abuse his power, indeed very irresponsible of him.

"Well, you see, everybody has already gone. Class was dismissed early." Philippa said, "I, um, I just... Uh..." Why couldn't he just go away? She needed to get her gloves back. Subtly, she began to edge back towards the classroom door.

"So, where are you from?" she asked, slowly edging away, "Oh, I'm Philippa. I'm... I'm from Romania..." She reached the classroom door and pushed it open. But she didn't go inside. She stood there, staring at him. She wiped her hands on her skirt to get rid of the sweat forming on them.

"See? Everybody's gone." Philippa gestured to the empty classroom, "So, you can go now? I just... Need to get something..." With that, she flounced inside with as much confidence as she could muster.

It felt wrong to go through the teacher's desk but it couldn't be helped. She pulled open the top drawer as quietly as she could. There they were! Her gloves! She pulled them on as quickly as she could and then slid the drawer shut again. After that, she left the classroom. She felt a little flustered. Her face was slightly pink with a mix of excitement and fear.

Elena ambled her way down the road. Somehow she didn't feel like going 'home' just yet-if the place she'd been forced into was anything to call home. Instead, she let her feet wander aimlessly, her mind engrossed in thought. Thinking about the events which had occurred in that classroom. It had been obvious from the point that she'd entered that something was not right, but she never would have expected the supernatural to be involved. Up until now she'd never encountered anyone with a gift like hers. However, something about the boy told her that his powers far exceeded hers. And what of the mysterious white-haired girl? What about the girl with the gloves? Just what was she supposed to make of her fellow students here at East Mizuno?

The ground beneath her changed from dusty sidewalk to a beaten earth track, and Elena looked up, surprised to see that she had arrived in what appeared to be a small park. A dejected-looking swingset sat some distance away, surrounded by equally depressing and unused equipment, with flaking paint and rusting hinges. Slowly, she made her way over, and cautiously sat down on a too-small swing, unsure whether it would hold her up. Luckily it did, and she took off her school bag to set it on the ground. She reached inside and drew out her most prized possession-her trusted sketchbook, which she had kept for years, having bought it the day after she found out the truth. One hand wiped some fluff off of the cover, and the other fumbled around in her bag for a pencil. Gently rocking back and forth on the swing, she began to draw.

Daichiro nodded to miss Alexandria.

"Sure, I wouldn't mind." He said.

With that he walked into the apartment complex and up the stairs to his cousin's room and knocked on the door. Saeko showed up but a moment later, dressed only in one of Daichiro's shirts which was too big for her but covered everything that needed to be covered.

"Hey cos!" She said as she backed away to let him in.

Daichiro's face was contorted into a frown as he walked in.

"Why are you wearing my shirt?" He asked as he shut the door.

"Well all of mine are in the wash right now, of course," she replied.

"And why are you not wearing anything else?"

She looked suggestively at him over her shoulder.

"Well, somebody's curious about my lack of clothing isn't he?" She joked.

His frown deepened.

"Oh come now, you're no fun! All of my clothing is in the wash. Yours isn't till tomorrow, remember? Better than me opening the door for you being stark naked, right?" She asked.

He slowly nodded, turning away and going to his room to set down his backpack as he thought about the events that transpired today. Miss Alexandria became an acquaintance. Miss Elena... sort of the same thing. The girl who ran away from the teacher, he felt sorry for... Quite a bit, all things considered but, why were the objects of his attention all girls?

He sat on the edge of his bed and contemplated what to do next. He had agreed to walk to school with miss Alexandria now, so that was going to be a change of pace, no longer walking alone. But he had to go early tomorrow to meet miss Elena in room 311 at 9am for a demonstration of her abilities. Obviously, he didn't want his own history read to him. He knew it enough not to require a repeat, nor did he want it. No, she would be able to tell him more about nearly anything so long as she concentrated on it.

He was about to take out his books and start the assigned reading when his cousin ran in and jumped on him.

"Hey! I just remembered something!" She yelled happily as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

Daichiro had been knocked on his back, glaring at her.

"What do you think you're doing?!" He yelled, his cousin laying on top of him.

"I forgot to tell you that I got you something nice!" She said, pushing herself up off of him and walking out of the room, returning shortly thereafter with a box that she forcefully handed him.

"There ya go cos!"

He stared at the box, then glared at her.

"... What is it?" He asked.

"Well open it and find out!"

He was less than pleased, and very wary. The last time she got him something like this it had been a prank and exploded covering him in some kind of cooking cream or something of the like. He opened it carefully, and as he opened the box lid he leaned back and away from him just in case. As he opened the lid, he saw that it was a cell phone. He lifted the phone out of the box and examined it. It was fairly new, the top able to slide away revealing a keyboard for texting.

"Unlimited talk and text, 48 GB internal memory, 3 GB RAM, 2.7 GHz quad-core processor! It's way past time you had a cell phone cos!"

He wasn't sure what to say, but one thing came to mind.

"How did you afford this?"

She frowned.

"Really? That's what you have to say to me? I buy you a top of the line phone and all you can think about is how I was able to afford it? C'mon cos, you should know better!" She said forcefully, putting her hands on her hips.

He looked down at the phone, flipping it over to see the back and saw his name etched (carefully but still unprofessionally into it). He stared at it for a long time, then looked over at Saeko. She was wearing a bandaid on her left hand, obviously from cutting herself etching his name into the phone case.

"... Thanks Saeko," he said quietly.

She huffed, and then smiled.

"Now that's more like it!" She said happily, as she came forward and kissed his cheek.

"Have fun with it cos!" She said as she walked out and closed his door.

... Yet again, something rather interesting happening. It was true, he had never had a cell phone before and this was going to be new. Perhaps it would come in handy, but for now he had studying to do. He put the phone down on his desk and got to work on the assigned reading, even though he didn't care to listen to what that teacher, Mr. Ueda, had to say or teach him anymore.

I waved goodbye to him as his cousin answered the door. I finished walking to my house and unlocked the door. Mom wasn't home. I sat down and began my homework, easily focusing on what I needed to get done.

"Honey!" My mom called after a while, interrupting my focus. I blinked and stood, walking out to her. "I'm going out tonight so you'll be on your own for dinner..." She said that as if it were unusual. "The neighbor will be over before I leave to watch you for the night, and I'll only be a phone call away."

I nodded and walked back upstairs, knowing that she was done now. I sat cross legged on my bed and just stared at my lap for a while, looking at my thin, pale hands and the bracelet detailing what to do if a situation occurred dangling loosely on my small wrist. I sighed and lay back on my bed, easily slipping the gold chain off of my wrist and throwing it across the room. I hated being that one kid with the weird medical condition. I hated that people constantly watched me and I never had any privacy. I hated being scared of having an attack at all times just because my mom insisted on making me scared. I hated it all.

I heard my mom leave and rose, going to the front door after grabbing a few of my books and putting the bracelet back on. The neighbor smiled at me. "You can leave..." I said. "I'm going out..." The neighbor stared at me for a few moments.

"Is that okay with your mom?"

I nodded and grabbed my jacket, walking outside. I had no clear destination in mind, but I soon found myself in front of Daichiro's home. I hesitated, then walked to the door and knocked, planning on asking if he'd like to work on homework with me.

Kazou was dumbstruck seeing someone trying to escape his sight. Normally, known as the center of attention, Kazou was surely curious to know why was she trying to escape his sight. 'Was there something on his face or were the students here just very unwelcoming ? Who knows !' Kazou thought. Kazou had come here to study so that he can achieve a better future. Getting stuck betwixt the pursuit of friends would just end up comprising his studies, something he was surely not favoring for.

Soon Kazou glanced back at the girl, planning to wish farewell to her but she seemed to have dissipated in thin air. Kazou looked left then right, his face seemed rather amazed. " Was she a spirit? ", thought Kazou. Well if she was a spirit, everything would be explained but apparently she wasn't. She was as human as was Kazou. She had just went into the classroom.

Kazou soon realized that and peeked through the door, just to find her taking something from the drawer of what seemed to be the teacher's desk. Kazou was amazed to see a girl who looked to be belonging to a well off family would be stealing from school. He frowned as he said, " You do know that stealing is bad, Don't you? " he asked as he stared right at her.

"It- it's not stealing!" Philippa protested, "Not when they are my gloves and they were taken from me! It's reclaiming." She crossed her arms and her face flushed a darker shade of pink, embarrassed about being caught.

"I... I need to go." With that, she strode quickly past him, a little more confident now that she had her gloves on. She kept her eyes focused straight ahead as she walked. She was praying to all the gods that she knew of that he wasn't going to tell on her. She would get in trouble, she knew it. And her father would be ashamed of her. And she'd be sent back to Romania. And- and- She couldn't think like that. She had to be positive.

It was only as she turned the corner onto her street, Philippa realised that she was running. Somewhere along the way, her walking had turned to speed walking, which had quickly turned to running. A strand of hair fell in her face. She reached the apartment building and tore up the stairs, the sounds of her footsteps echoing. She reached their apartment and flung open the door. She wasn't really sure what she expected to see. The apartment was empty. Her father wasn't home from work yet. Breathless, Philippa closed the door behind her and locked it. Then, she collapsed on the couch. Why had she been running? More importantly, why had she been so panicked? She got up and headed to her father's bedroom. Slowly, she pulled off her gloves. She didn't have any incense to burn but one of her father's cigarettes would do just as well. Her hands shaking, she removed a cigarette from the packet and lit it with the lighter she found. It took a few attempts.

Philippa's mother always burnt incense to steady Philippa's mind and help her with her abilities. Whether this was actually true or was a load of rubbish, Philippa wasn't sure. She wafted the cigarette around with one hand and with the other hand, reached for the photograph. A photograph of her parents, just after they got married. She wanted to touch it. She wanted to see if there was any reason for her to feel uneasy about the future. Her fingers were about to brush against it when the door flew open. Philippa yanked her gloves back on.

"Philippa? What are you doing?" Her father didn't sound angry, just disappointed, "I told you not to come in here." She dropped the still smouldering cigarette onto the wooden floor.

"Philippa?" her father was looking at her, a little worried now.

"It's nothing. I just... You're home early." Philippa said, rubbing her forehead, "I missed you." She stood up and stamped down hard on the cigarette with her bare foot. She could feel her foot burning as she grinded the cigarette into the ground. She did not need her father thinking she had a smoking problem.

"I missed you too." her father said. She kicked the remainders of the cigarette under the bed and left the room.

"Philippa, you... You know that you can talk to me, right?"

"Yeah, I know." Phillipa darted into her room and slammed the door behind her, hopping on one foot.

The pencil curved across Elena's page in light strokes. Before she knew it, the picture had begun to take the shape of an eye. An eye with a cold, stern brow above, and a bewitching glare. Although she hadn't had anything in mind when she begun, she could recognise the eye clearly, and soon began to shade in the vermillion hue, referring to the image in her mind. People had always been envious of her ability to draw pictures 'from memory'- the retrocognition certainly helped.

After about an hour had passed, the pair of scarlet eyes glared back at her from the page. Shaking her head, she tucked the sketchbook back into her bag, and decided it was about time she got back.

When she let herself in, the house she occupied was empty. None of the family had arrived back yet, it seemed. Elena was silently thankful-as kind as they all were, she didn't like having to make conversation with them. After making herself a sandwich in the kitchen, she took her things upstairs and laid down on her bed. It had certainly been an odd day, and she had the feeling that tomorrow would be no different. Just how did she intend to 'demonstrate' her gift to Daichiro?

Saeko heard the knock on the door and walked over, still wearing absolutely nothing but Daichiro's shirt (thankfully still long enough to cover everything) as she opened the door.

"Oh! Well hello!" She said enthusiastically as she eyed the girl up and down.

"I don't suppose you're here to see my cousin, Daichiro, are you?" She said, leaning in a bit with a sly smirk.

Alexandria

"Hello, and yes..." I said softly, bowing slightly to her. "My name is Alexandria..." I stayed bowed a moment longer, then righted myself. "I hope I am not disturbing you..." I held my books tighter against my chest, a sign of my uncertainty of knocking on the door.

I should have expected that he would not be the person to answer the door. I probably shouldn't have even come. I inwardly sighed, all of these conflicting thoughts occurring in the matter of seconds, although it felt like hours in my mind. "I can leave, if you wish me to...?" I offered in a softer voice than my usual small and airy tone. I let my eyes fall to the ground.

Saeko looked at the girl blankly for a moment, then gave her a huge smile.

"You are the CUTEST little thing ever!!" She yelled, jumping forward and wrapping her arms around the girl, pulling her into a tight hug.

"Who knew my anti-social cousin could get such a cute girl to come here to ask to see him!!" She yelled, hopping up and down with the girl for a moment, then she froze.

"Wait... you ARE here to see Daichiro, right?" She asked, backing her head away just enough to see her though still not letting her go anywhere outside of her arms.

Alexandria

My eyes were wide as I stared at her, and my cheeks pink. "...Yes..." I said, slightly flustered from the woman squeezing my small frame and jumping up and down. "Will you please put me down? Your hug is very tight..." I bit my lip, looking down, suddenly regretting how I had just phrased that. What if I had insulted Daichiro's cousin? She seemed very nice, but some people's personalities would turn on a dime, and she seemed like she may be one of those kinds of people.

Saeko smiled.

"Great!" She said as she released the girl.

"Hey cos! You've got a visitor!" She said as she walked inside and gestured for her to come inside.

Daichiro was in his room, completely ignoring all outside sound as he read the text book's last few pages. The subject was Music Appreciation, analyzing the techniques and orchestration of traditional composers from the "golden age" of music throughout the 1400's to the 1900's. Daichiro was something of a music fan, so the subject was usually interesting enough for him to lose himself in it when he wanted to.

Finally, Saeko had to come and open his door, throwing a small bread roll at his head as she entered.

"Hey!" He yelled over his shoulder.

"I told your dumb ass that you have a visitor! Now get out here and introduce us already!" She yelled.

Daichiro sighed and put his book down, walking out and was quite surprised to see miss Alexandria here.

"Oh, miss Alexandria. I didn't expect to see you today," he said.

Saeko slapped him across the back of the head, pushing him forward.

"What the hell was that for?!" He yelled.

"I said introduce us and that's the best you've got?!" She countered.

Daichiro trembled in anger for a moment, then let out a soft sigh.

"Miss Alexandria, this is my cousin Saeko. As you can see..." he said, gesturing to Saeko, "she's a complete moron," he said.

Saeko's cheeks puffed out, and she jumped on his back putting him in a choke hold.

"What was that mister know it all?! What did you call me?!" She yelled, tightening the hold.

"I called you a moron, because you are a moron! You don't greet guests wearing nothing but a shirt!!" He yelled back, using his hand to prevent her arm from reaching his arteries or cutting off the blood flow to his head.

"Rrgh!!" Saeko yelled before jumping off of his back.

"Fine, be that way!" She said, shoving him back into his room rather suddenly and slamming the door in his face.

"Okay, sorry about that dear! I'm Saeko, Daichiro's older and much wiser cousin. I do apologize for the crude display between the two of us, but that's how we show affection in my house!" She said, just as Daichiro opened the door.

His face was red, but not out of anger or embarrassment, but because the door had hit him really hard in the face. He huffed out his nose and brushed his face off with his sleeve, wiping away a few drops of blood dripping from his nose.

"She's definitely older, but I don't know about 'wiser,'" he said.

Saeko turned around very slowly, eyes closed and smiling ever so sweetly at her cousin.

"Excuse me, Daichiro... But what did you just say?" She asked in a soft and delicate voice.

Daichiro's expression didn't change at all.

"I said you were definitely older, but not 'wiser,'" he said again, flatly.

Saeko turned to miss Alexandria, that sweet smile still on her face.

"I hope you'll excuse us for just a moment dear. Please wait outside for a minute, I'll come fetch you once I've taught my idiot cousin a lesson in manners," she said, her voice still ever so sweet.

Alexandria

I just stood there silently in the whirlwind of what had turned into confused chaos. "Uhm...okay...?" I said softly when she asked me to step outside so she could teach Daichiro a lesson, unsure of what else to say besides 'yes'. I hesitantly walked back outside and waited, feeling very awkward and out of place. Despite my crazy mother, who decided any day that she felt well would be filled with new diets and yoga routines, or the latest 'craze' in fitness, I had always remained calm and quiet for the most part, as had she. I had never been in an environment where one person just tackles another and tried to get them in a headlock, or where a door is slammed in your face and makes your nose bleed. I started chewing on my lip, unsure of what to do with myself as I waited, shivering slightly in the cooling night.

Inside the house was quiet for several minutes before at last Saeko returned and opened the door to allow miss Alexandria inside once more. This time, she was fully dressed in shorts and a shirt of her own, and silently gestured for her to come inside.

Daichiro was nowhere to be found.

"Please, sit down for a moment," she said gently as she sat on the couch.

She waited for Alexandria to sit down, and then smiled sweetly to her.

"I do apologize for the little spat between myself and Daichiro. We've known each other since he was five and we behave rather strangely. Family does that sometimes. Anyway, Daichiro is on what you might equate to a time-out for calling me "old" so for the moment it's just you and me."

She opened her eyes.

"What did you say your name was again dear?" She asked.

Alexandria

I swung my legs as I sat there, simply for something to do. My feet didn't even touch the ground when I wasn't swinging them. "Alexandria..." I murmured softly when she prompted me for my name, my eyes focused on my hands, which were folded in my lap, and my head was bowed slightly. "Do you two often fight...?" I asked after a moment, still not looking at her, chewing on the inside of my cheek.

Saeko chuckled.

"Actually, we don't. To be honest I think that's the first time we've fought like that. I guess the reality of us having a guest over caught us both off guard and we forgot ourselves for a few minutes. I do apologize for that," she said, chuckling again.

"Anyway, I'm pleased to meet you Alexandria. I know I said it before, but my name is Saeko. Saeko Mishihara, if you'd like my full name."

She took a moment and walked to the kitchen area, bringing back two cups of tea.

"Would you like a cup?" She asked, setting the tray on the table as she sat down next to the girl again.

Alexandria

"It is odd for me as well to be a guest..." I assured her softly, my eyes still focused on my hands. I watched curiously as she walked away, then came back with tea. "Yes, please..." I said in response to her offer of tea, taking a moment to look at the room around us for the first time. The apartment seemed so different from my home. It wasn't messy or dirty per se, but it seemed...lived in. My home felt like a sterile hospital room, in my opinion, and I had been in enough hospitals to know the feeling of them.

Saeko looked about the room.

"Ah, do forgive the mess. I was doing laundry and trying to organize a few things in my room and I kind of left things I didn't need out here in the living room." She said with a laugh.

She took a sip of her tea, then looked to the girl.

"So, are you in Daichiro's class?" She asked.

Alexandria

"I like your home...it's homey..." I said softly, looking back at Saeko after a moment. "I am in his class, yes..." I murmured as I drank some of the warm tea, glad that it was helping me rid myself of the slight shivers I had from being outside. "How did he come to live with you, rather than immediate family, if you do not mind my asking..."

Saeko's smile softened, and her eyes betrayed her inner guilt and sadness.

"Do forgive me, but it's not my place to say. It's his. All I can tell you is that the bond the two of us share is quite strong, and Daichiro felt safest with me." She said, taking a longer sip of her tea.

"Anyway, that's enough out of me. I'm sure you came to see him for studying or something of the like, yes?" She asked, standing up and going to his room to knock on the door.

"Hey, Daichiro, your study buddy is coming to see you!" She called through the door.

She turned back, walking towards her room.

"Well, don't mind me dear. Study away!" She said, giving her a wink as she walked into her room and closed the door.
