Day #1 / Decision #12

Day 1 (choice 2: leave the convo be)

You decide to leave the conversation at that. The order bell dings again a few minutes later and you handle taking them out to the customers. Sam practically ignores you when you take the plates from the kitchen, he gives you the table number and that’s it.

The rest of the morning goes by without incident or curious occurrence. By the time the 12 o'clock lunch rush rolls around, Spice is asleep where he sits at the counter. Even if you can’t see that his eyes are closed, you can tell because you hear his small snores. The regulars give him sympathetic looks.

A group of miners on break walk in and see him asleep. You wave them over to where you’re standing at the counter.

A Lizardborn with a bulky build and dust drenched hair and clothes leans on the counter and points a thumb to Spice.

“Doin’ these shifts finally caught up to’em didn’ it?”

You chuckle out a yes and that you’d feel bad if you woke him. The lizardborn grins.

“We’ll keep it down, don’t worry, that Cat deserves his sleep, right guys?”

The lizardborn turns to the other miners he came in with and they all give some form of agreement. However, you see a few of them take photos which you’re sure will come up again at the bar.

You then ask if it was the usual mass order?

He gives you finger guns and clicks his tongue.

“Ya got it”

He then digs in his pocket for the money before handing it to you. You quickly count it and nod. Him and the group then sit over in the stools at the closed bar and at the closest tables like they usually do, keeping a quiet chatter between each other.

Thankfully none of the order items are ones that you would need to interact with Sam about. The order consists of coffees, bagels, pastries, and the last few muffins at the counter. You pull a stack of plates out from the cabinet under the coffee machines and round up all of the food in paper bags. Then you start on the drinks. Once the whole order is finished, you bring it over in three trips. Two of which are for the drinks.

You hand it all off to the Lizardborn from earlier. He distributes the plates, drinks and food out as you hand it to him. You don’t know his name despite handling the order for the past weekdays.

Once the food is all settled in the right hands, the Lizardborn pulls you aside.

“Hey uh, is the day for Fall still happening this year? Me and some of the others have been getting kinda worried about Spice and Sugar, they usually don’t work this much this time of year and they hired you on as well, do you know what’s going on?”

He’s polite with the question and clearly has concern on his face. The name trips you up though. Fall? Did he mean Autumn? You don’t know if it’s your place to say whether or not it’s happening or anything about the wedding order. Especially with how Rise’s reaction went. Though now you were leaning towards whatever they do for Autumn, Fall?, being public.

Your watch reads 12:34

Do you...

1.
Tell him you don’t know if it’s going to be on the same day or not?

2. Tell him it may be pushed back because of the wedding order?

3. Tell him you haven’t heard about anything involving Fall?

Day 1 (Choice 1: tell the day)

You tell him you don’t know whether it will take place on the same day. You don’t say that you don’t actually know for certain if they are even holding it.

His shoulders sink. He then rubs his snout exasperatedly.

“If you do get a date for it, tell me.”

He gestures to the other miners.

“We all used to work with him, Fall was on our crew before he died.”

“He was our transporter and he was really good at his job, none of us really knew him deeper than being work and drinking buds, but...”

The lizardborn sighs.

“He deserves to be paid our respects”

A couple of the miners, who were nearby and eavesdropping, hit their chest lightly at the lizardborns words.

You nod and he turns back to the group with a sad smile.

Clearly this person was friends with a lot of people. Fall, Autumn?, sounded like the typical working class guy who drank in the evening with his coworkers to unwind after a long day.

How did he die though?

Mining accident?
The job he had was dangerous, he could have been fatally injured many different ways in his line of work.

Alcohol poisoning?
A lot of statements pointed to Sam’s brother having been an alcoholic.

...Something else?
The topic of Autumns death in the argument from earlier sounded like it had something implied you didn’t have context for

The magic in your veins tempts your morbid curiosity with the option of leaping back to find out yourself, but you swiftly shoot down the idea of using it for this.

You could just ask someone. You didn’t need to find out in real time and potentially alter things for the worse. Your race was hunted for that specific magical ability in hopes of preventing deaths. If you used your magic for the curiosity of someone’s death, how were you any different?

It also wasn’t your business to drag details up if you asked about it.

So you ignored the unknown detail and continued your workday.

It went on normally, with minor annoyances from Sam. Spice woke up around 1:30 and you got off at 2pm. A violet skinned birdfolk, who you still did not know the name of, came and clocked in right as you left.

You’re strolling down the street to the bookstore you had been finding yourself frequenting the past week. You’re just about to enter when you hear someone call out to you.

“HEY!”

You turn to see one of the miners from earlier standing a few meters away.

They appeared to be human, a rare sight nowadays, and they were extremely out of breath. They were bent over and leaning on their knees, it’s as if they ran to catch up to you. You hear a slight wheeze to each of their breaths.

Shouldn’t they be at work?

Do you...

1.
Ask them what’s the matter

Or
2.
Ignore them and go inside
