Toffee Popcorn

Syrrus

Wishful bard
Lawliet was sitting in his usual spot, in a high backed chair with his feet beneath him, his bare toes gripping the end of the seat. He had his nose in a bowl of what seemed to be popcorn and to the policemen's annoyance he was picking out pieces and tossing them over his shoulder, completely entranced. He always ate sweets, that wasn't the problem, it was the fact that he kept hitting them with puffed corn that frustrated every single one of them. No one has said a word, no one dared to say anything when L were that involved in something, it was a delicate thought process and they all hoped, fingers crossed, that it had something to do with the case.

What went through Lawliet's head had actually little to do with Kira, it almost had nothing at all to do with him to be precise. The thought process had started out the same way as always but had slowly trailed off which was very unlike the famous detective. He was thinking about the news and the person that probably were on her very way up the elevator towards his hotel room. He had already gone through multiple background checks and made sure through many safety procedures that this woman indeed could not fit the profile of Kira. He wasn't often wrong but it wasn't the whole murdering business that had made his thought trail off.

L didn't like people. Not much anyway. He didn't dislike them either, that had been awfully foolish of him. He simply didn't understand them. It had taken quite a toll to meet the policemen from Tokyo's police department and now in the midst of his old 'friends' deaths he had to introduce himself to a completely new face? It was too much for him to bare, something he indeed could not stand the thought off.

There was also another problem, the one laying in the bowl in front of him in the shape of sweet and salted popcorn.

Shooting up from her bed, the sound of an alarm clock rang loudly from her night stand. Chelsea looked at the numbers on her alarm that had formed the time, gasping loudly as she exclaimed, “It’s 9:00am! I only have an hour to get ready!” She sprang out of bed and ran towards her wardrobe, quickly choosing the clothes that she’ll wear and ran into her bathroom, quickly having a shower. She came out wearing a black singlet with the Yin and Yang symbol on it, dark blue skinny jeans and her red conversers. Chelsea hurried herself as she blow dries her hair, combs it, applies make-up, brushes her teeth and grabs her purse and car keys before running out the door before putting on her dark red hoodie.

Chelsea managed to find a parking spot, not so far away from the hotel. She raised her sleeve, looking down at her watch and lets out a sigh of relief. “I’ve got four minutes left…” she sighed before quickly getting out of the car, locking it and running towards the hotel building. She enters the building with wide eyes, her jaw slightly hanging open as she looked around her surroundings. “It must cost a fortune to stay here….” She thought before going towards the reception and asking for the directions to the specific room. She enters the elevator and pressed the button to the top floor, anxiety starting to kick in. “I hope I make a good impression…” she thought before she was snapped out of it as the elevator doors open. She walks down the corridor, looking at the numbers above the doors as she walked past them. Chelsea finally found the room and stopped in front of the door. Taking a deep breath, she raised her fist and knocked onto the door.

An elderly man answered the door. Chelsea immediately thought she had the wrong room until he spoke. “Ah, you must be the new recruit, please, come in” he said with a kind tone, opening the door wider and letting her inside. As she entered the room, she saw the men gathered around, sitting on the couches, looking rather annoyed towards a strange looking men. “Everyone, Miss Jay has arrived” The elderly man spoke, getting their attention.

The knock on the door was light hearted, quick and perhaps even a little stressed. She had woken up late. It wasn't hard to figure out reasons behind tiny details and Lawliet were quite happy that he always did it as of instinct. It made life so much easier. No one could truly surprise him, not even death itself. He jumped out of his seat, just a tiny leap and walked through the room away from the door, causing the policemen to frown at him. Watari was the one to open and as he did so L was already gone.

The footsteps sounded unsure and light. She was a young woman, perhaps not even above the age of twenty five. Lawliet already knew everything about her but he waited silently while every single man in the hotel room had stepped forward, bowed and shook her hand, telling her their names. Not their proper names of course, that would have been a shame. As they did this, one after the other he could catch her voice. Younger than himself it seemed. He of course knew all this from the background check himself and Watari had done on the girl, he knew everything about her but what he didn't know was exactly how true the papers were to her actual existence. He took a moment, a short one to let everything sink in, not for himself; he was already ready but for the others and Miss Jay herself.

He could hear the footsteps of Watari, even by noise alone he could figure that the elderly man was avoiding every single piece of popcorn cluttered over the floor. The man then stopped, just outside of the wardrobe where Lawliet had gone to hide. Of course, he hadn't known at the time that he had stepped into a wardrobe instead of another room, it hadn't been relevant and it still wasn't. He opened the door, as Watari was placed next to him and stepped out, turning around the corner and looked directly at the young woman with his piercing eyes, scratching his leg with his other foot.

"This would be Ryusaki" Said the Policeofficer, who technically were in charge of the whole operation, he didn't feel in charge though, Lawliet new this, gesturing towards the strange white dressed man in question.

She smiled and greeted everyone, bowing and shaking their hands. "It's very nice to meet you all" she replied once the police officers have all introduced themselves to her.

She saw Watari going into the next room from the corner of her eye, wondering where he was off to. She then noticed all the popcorn on the floor, frowning slightly in confusion.

"...What's with the popcorn?.." She asked, looking back up to the officers in front of her.

"Oh, Ryuzaki is quite picky when it comes to food, haha.." said one of the officers. The man seemed to be around her age. He seemed to be quite new to police work. He was tall with black hair, wearing a goofy grin. But another thing came to her mind. Who was Ryuzaki? Just before she could think anything else, she turned her attention to the strange man entering the room with Watari. "This would be Ryuzaki" she heard as she starred at the man. He was very unusual and strange. He has a slouched posture, messy hair, very pale skin and dark bags under his big dark eyes which where burning into her own.

She realised she was starring, making her slightly blush with embarrassment. "H-Hi...I'm Jay...nice to meet you Ryuzaki" she stuttered awkwardly, extending out her hand, feeling slightly intimidated by the man in front of her.

"Nice to meet you." He said and then looked down upon her hand which was coming towards him. This gesture was another thing which confused the man a great deal, he saw no purpose in it. Touching people were icky and most of them who he actually touched, the policemen around them as example, thought it was very 'icky' to touch him too. His hands were not sticky, never sticky; for being someone who eats a lot of sweets he sure managed to keep it all off his person, but his hands were extremely cold.

Lawliet knew what everyone were thinking, it was obvious and he assumed they knew the reasons as to why. Everyone had their theories, that L was autistic, it was a mental condition, to be extremely skilled at something, be great at noticing details, math's and other arts but to be terrible at body language and social interactions. He knew that they all had been thinking it when they first met him, he had every single box checked when it came to that 'disorder' though he didn't see it as such. He also knew that they all were thinking it, once again, now when he slowly walked around their new member, this time without touching her hand. He had shook the others' hands in a weird fashion and learned that it only made them more uncomfortable, to know that he didn't have a clue how to behave socially, so he decided it was best to just leave it for this time.

He jumped back into his seat, perched on top if like a gargoyle, peering back into the bowl of popcorn and continuing the way he did before but this time he didn't do it silently. "So, you're here to stop Kira. Why?"

Jay put her hand back down to her side as he just walked past her. She found it quite rude but just decided to leave it. She took a seat opposite from Ryuzaki, holding her hands in her lap.

She observed the man once again, taking note on his strange behaviour. "He doesn't seem very sociable...it also seems he has never even seen the sun from the look of his pale skin....the bags under his eyes also says that he hardly sleeps...he must be some workaholic..." She thought before answering his question.

"Yes I am. Kira is a murderer who only wants to play god. Not only is he killing prisoners, but he is also killing the innocent....it needs to stop" she answers, looking at Ryuzaki, straight in the eye as she spoke.

Tossing a piece of popcorn over his shoulder he looked up at her. She sounded like a broken record, not because what she said was untrue or that she sounded in any way as if she didn't know what she was talking about but because everyone in this very room had said the exact same. Lawliet decided to test her, as he popped a popcorn into his mouth. "How do you think he's getting away with it?" He said, his voice sounding awfully monotone. It always did, when he was testing someone as if whatever he was trying to do bored him half to death. He looked around the room, making sure no one else decided to respond to his question. They weren't the smartest of people after all and even if he enjoyed their company dearly they surely knew how to test his patience. However, L had another problem which also could be pointed out as a box check for autism; he didn't seem to have any grasps on emotion, nor have any that he could control himself.

He waited, as Watari pushed a cart of candy, sweets and cakes towards him, stopping it by his side. He instantly tossed the bowl of popcorn away as if it was a true sin and grabbed a plate of strawberry shortcake. He then looked over at the others, like he always did, the men simply shook their head and he then looked over at Jay again, gesturing towards the cake trey.

She smile and nodded, taking a piece of cake from the cart, she had forgotten to eat this morning.

"Kira isn't present at the time of the victim's death, making it hard for anyone to find any trace as there would be no sign of finger prints, hair follicles and so forth. Also, most of the deaths are caused from heart attacks, making it even more difficult" she says, not taking her eyes away from his, not wanting to show any weakness and that she was determined. She scooped a small piece of cake from her fork, placing it into her mouth, letting the creamy goodness dance on her taste buds.

Everyone was shocked and terrified at the same time, not because of what she said; it was all quite basic but because she had taken one of his cakes! None of the other policemen had ever actually said yes to Lawliet's charity they were staring at him, as if they thought that he would explode any moment, however, nothing happened. L simply watched her sin silence, scratching the tip of his nose with a finger and listened.

She ate one of his cakes. He had to admit that her answer wasn't the thing he had been listening to. But the noise of cream and a crunchy cake bottom as she put it in her mouth. It was always better watching her eat it than it was eating it. Or so he thought, until he took a bite himself, holding the fork in that strange manner that always freaked people out. Nope, the cake was better. He continued to watch her. "So basically..." He said between mouth fools, adding more toppings to his cake, candy and berries. "You came all this way and joined us just to tell me something I already know?" She had answered the question correctly of course. The Police needed evidence to track down Kira but a great mind such as L's didn't. He knew exactly who Kira was, the problem however, was that... he had no proof. It then hit him, an idea like thunder in the clear sky.

Lawliet pointed at her with his fork. "You look like the same age as Yagami Light..." He said slowly and instantly got the attention from every single man around the table. "Seriously?! We have talked about Light for a long time now, he's not Kira! What more do you--" " I never said that he was Kira." L said as he took another bite of cake. "I just stated that she looks to be the same age."

Chelsea looked over towards the other men as she heard some gasps escape from their gapeing mouths, having the look of surprise and fear. "....Did I do somthing wrong?...." She thought as she took another bite of her cake, feeling nervous from their reaction.

As Ryuzaki spoke as she gave him her thoughts, she frowned, feeling anger boil within her. "No, keep calm, Chelsea...he is testing you..." She told herself, making her relax slightly.

"You're the one who asked me to join..." She spoke with an annoyed tone. "I did not come here to be put down by some rude detective".

She raises her eyebrow as he mentions a person named Light, slightly shocked as she heard he was suspected as Kira. "Yagami's son?.....it would make sense as he could easily get into police information..." She thought, taking another bite from her cake. "I'm 21.." She simply stated after she swallowed.

"I didn't ask for your presence at all." Lawliet said, simply as he took another sweet and placed it in front of him just as Watari put down a cup of tea next to his plate. "After the FBI incident they simply figured that I were in over my head which isn't at all true." He continued and started to drop sugar cubes from a high height into his tea, causing it to splash something awfully but without straining his own cloths. However, the people around him decided that it was for the best to lean the other way. "Which isn't at all true. I have everything under control." He added and peered at her from underneath his black fringe.

"Under control?!" Shouted one of the police officers. "If you had anything under control the FBI agents wouldn't be dead!"

"That is entirely possible yes, or perhaps it was all I needed to get in control." L continued, peering over at the Officer who now stood up staring at the detective. "I didn't say that it wasn't sad that they had to go and die, I knew them better than any of you. However... We know for a fact that Kira was on that very train." He sipped his tea, pausing but not entirely on purpose it was just very hard to talk with liquid in your mouth.

Chelsea narrowed her eyes and glared at Ryuzaki with annoyance. "And this is who I have to work with?" She asked herself in her mind, taking her last bite of her cake and putting the empty plate onto the cart.

She looked up to the officer that had stood up, shouting at the detective. As much as she wanted to comment, she continued to stay silent. She crossed her arms and leaned back into the couch, listening to Ryuzaki's explanation.

Lawliet seemed unphased by the cold air that had suddenly entered the room. He seemed to be the only one who didn't seem to notice or care about how awkward the moment had turn. In fact it didn't seem like L understood what any of their body language meant and Watasi who indeed did didn't seem to care, he just stood next to Lawliet in silence. "I went thought the security footage from that very subway train and I noticed something..." He leaned back and grabbed something that Watari was holding in his hands, he held it up, showing the group a photo, it looked rather blurry a bit out of focus perhaps of one of the FBI agents laying on the station staring up at a young man which caused at least half of the men in the room to frown in annoyance. Yagami Light.

Chelsea leaned in closer to the picture, sqinting her eyes, examining the blurred photograph. She looked back over towards the men behind her, seeing their expressions, wondering why they seemed so annoyed. She turned back to the photo and examined it more. "So....you think this could be Light-kun? How can you be so sure? It's way to blurry to tell who the man is......but whoever he is, he thought this through..." She said as she looked up from the picture and looking up at L.

Lawliet leaned back narrowing his eyes at her. Why did she call him 'kun'? Were they that close? Childhood friends perhaps? Or even something better. "It's not too blurry to see who it is but it is too blurry to use as evidence." He took another piece of cake and popped half of it into his mouth, chewing on it with crumbs on his cheek. "That's irrelevant." He looked at the other Policemen and then back down at his cake. "That's it for today, bye-bye."

The men looked at him in confusion. What the heck just happened? Watari was even showing them towards the door. The men slowly got up, clearly frustrated as they said their goodbyes and left the apartment, however would the young lady try to leave Watari would stop her, kindly.

"I would like a word with you in private, Miss Jay." Said L calmly as he started to lick in a tiny heart shaped lollipop.

She was quite confused. Was the meeting over already? She said her goodbyes to the rest of the task force and just when she was about to get up, she was stopped by Watari. She raised an eyebrow as she was asked to stay behind. "Oh great, did I say somthing wrong?....was it about eating his cake? Or maybe it was when I called him 'a rude detective'...me and my big mouth..." She thought as she sat back down into her seat. "Is...there somthing wrong?.." She asked, getting slightly nervous.

"Nope." Lawliet said, smiling from ear to ear in that fashion that only he could, though the smile died rather quickly as he looked back down at his sweets. He wasn't much for smiling, unless the job required him to, or when he was gloating which he sadly didn't have enough time to do, now a days. "I would like to give you a private mission, but we need to keep it behind closed doors." L peered up at her again, through black strings of hair. "It means that you will need to work different times from the others, they work all nights anyway, but I need you for field work, being as young as you are..."

She lets out a sigh of relief. "Oh thank god!" She thought. She found his smile odd, thinking it did not match his personality. Even though she has only met this man, she knew it was so out of character. He very quickly went back to his normal expression.

Even though she has examined him more then once during the meeting, she felt oddly attracted to him in some way.

"What are you thinking Chelsea?! He is your boss! You shouldn't be thinking such things...." She scolded herself mentally, making her cheeks blush a soft pink colour. Her face lit up as he mentioned a private mission. She was happy, now feeling useful towards the team.

"Alright, I accept" she simply said, giving him a soft smile.

"Great." He said, slowly, almost as if he couldn't even imagine her saying no. She didn't have much choice, actually. She either had to go by his rules or leave and work with the original police department and they weren't doing too good. "I would like you to meet up with Yagami Light..." He continued and finished his cup of tea. It tasted divine, especially after ten cubes of sugar.

Lawliet knew as a fact that she probably would complain, everyone did when he mentioned Light. The thing was, even if he had no proof he knew very well that the young man were no one short but Kira. He simply couldn't explain how he knew this, but he did. All the sly remarks, and the jokes... It was clear. Kira was someone who knew everything that the Police Department were doing, he was young and lived in Japan.

"Become friends with him, anything to get close... Keep an eye on him, alright?"

Chelsea sat there and thought for a moment. If Light really was Kira, this would be dangerous, but she wanted to help as much as possible, even if her own life was at stake. She nodded, agreeing to the mission. "Alright, I'll do my best...how should I meet up with him?" She asked, swiping some candy from his cart and popping it into her mouth, leaning back into the couch.

"He goes to school not far away from here... or actually, I think he just enrolled at a university, though that isn't far from here either. Watari will give you the details. Just remember not to give him your real name or... Miss Jay, I don't think that's enough for friendship." Lawliet shrugged though, almost as if he didn't actually know if it was enough or not. Human interactions were hard. Depending on the person they either had too much logic or none at all, it was almost impossible not to insult someone.

Chelsea nodded, mentally taking note. "Toho university is the closest so I'm guessing there?" She asks, starring into an unknown corner of the room. She had a habit of starring when she was in deep thought. She quickly thought up a name and turned her blue gaze back to his. "Alright, my name will be Sawako Hotta......is there anything else you need?" She asks.

(I'll just skip to the next day....)

After the meeting, Chelsea made her way home, getting into her car, sighing tiredly to herself. "It's been a long day..I need to get some sleep for tomorrow..." she thought before starting up her car and driving herself home.

The next morning, Chelsea had gotten up and gotten herself ready, this time she was not in any rush as she double checked her alarm clock the night before. She made herself some coffee and breakfast before leaving the apartment. She got into her car and drove her way to Toho university, wondering if L was going to be there. She parked her car in the parking lot, locked it and made her way up the path the led to the university. She smiled as she took in her surroundings, seeing that the cherry blossoms have opened up.

(Sorry that I didn't respond. I thought I had x_X, I'll play Light as well, if you dont mind?)

The day had started off slow. Light was slowly walking through the university grounds, yawning heavily. He had spent most of his time, if not all 'studying' the other night and hadn't been able to go to bed during a proper hour. Never mind that his new floating friend wouldn't stop pestering him about apples. Like the one he was now holding in his hand, tossing up and down in the air just to annoy the Death God back.
