A height of six feet and four inches with a build that might deceive one into believing he can lift cars. Similarly to how a monstrous figure in your periphery demands attention, his presence alone kickstarts a fight or flight response. His warm tawny skin is adorned with some odd tattoos reminiscent of sharp, symmetrical ink-blot tests. To add to the unintentional intimidation factor are silver piercings along his ears, below his lips and on his eyebrow. His hair, often swept to one side, is a dark chestnut brown that fades into a shade of red towards the tips. His sharp, tired eyes—one hazel the other brown—aid the seemingly permanent scowl on his face. There’s a scar just over the right side of his lip, one of the very rare visible ones. Has some slight stubble on his chin and jaw. [ CHARACTER ART BY ME ]

Clothing: Plain, solid-color tops, massive hoodies or jackets, and dark denim or sweatpants. Mostly everything is thrifted. Doesn't try to stick out too much style-wise. Prefers darker colors but isn't against the classic white t-shirt. Everything in his closet is designed so he doesn't have too think too hard about what he's gonna wear. Does occasionally indulge in rings and bracelets. Sometimes you might even catch him with painted nails.

NAME
Selene Bouchard

AGE
21

GENDER
Cis-Female

SEXUALITY
Panromantic Asexual

CLOTHING STYLE
Ever since she was a teenager, Selene has had more of a goth type look going on, with the majority of her clothing being black, with a few small white pieces. Neither too girl-like nor too tomboyish, Selene is fine with either a t-shirt and jeans or a dress, black boots or sneakers on her feet. She does occasionally add some color to her look, like recently dying the ends of her hair blue.

Besides her favorite colors, Selene will also spruce up her appearance with prints and designs on her clothing. A fan of nature, Selene likes floral prints, especially on dresses. She also likes to wear clothes that mean something to her, whether that be a band logo or movie poster, as long as Selene has some personal connection to it. Her spiritual beliefs are represented by various necklaces and jewelry that Selene wears that have the icons and symbols of those traditions.

PERSONALITY
Selene is a shy individual, most of what she wants to say going on in her head and not out loud. That is not to say that she is unfriendly, but Selene finds that she doesn’t have the proper words to express herself. She has lived most of her life as an outcast, whether that be to her wealth or later her status as a weird new girl who may be a little crazy. This separateness from others her age has caused Selene to be a little bit stunted in relation to social interactions, but she still tries to not be completely socially oblivious.

Selene also loves to hear stories, always ready to provide a supporting ear to those ready to share. She loves to know more about people, as Selene sees it as the first step in connecting with others. This also extends to learning more about history, as Selene is something of a local historian, trying to fully know about Ashwood Hollow and its lore. Selene will also use her magic to draw memories out of items, though she’ll sometimes feel bad about as it is prying without consent.

Growing up exposed to many other cultures, Selene has a varied world view. Adopting aspects of beliefs from around the world, Selene is definitely spiritual, but doesn’t ascribe herself to any one particular religion. This openness also means that is very accepting of others, always ready to hear someone else’s take on what they belief. Learning that magic is real has only caused Selene’s beliefs to become more nuanced.

Throughout her teenage years, romance has been a mess for Selene, having been attracted to both men and women, but not in the same way as others. It wasn’t until she got older that she found the words for her persuasion, though she hasn’t really shared them with others. Currently Selene is still too unsure of herself to ask anyone out, though she has been mentally coaching herself to work up the nerve. If making friends is very hard for Selene, starting a romantic relationship is even harder.

TYPE OF MAGIC
Psychometry: Selene has the magical ability to draw forth memories from an object she touches. For this to work, the object must have been touched recently by the person who memories Selene draws, or for the object to be closely associated with the owner of the memories. While Selene can get brief memories by just slightly touching an object, if she holds onto it for a good while, Selene can gain more complex memories.

Originally unable to this magic off, gathering a few memories from everything she touched, Selene has taught herself to only draw memories if she so chooses. The only exemption is when she touched an item filled with a very strong memory, it will forcibly enter her mind. These strong memories are more likely to stick in her mind, as most weaker memories will drift away unless Selene chooses consciously to remember it.

Another effect of gaining a strong memory is that Selene will temporarily gain the skills of whoever the memory originally came from. These new skills are temporary and will disappear as soon as the memory does. Selene hasn’t really used this aspect of her magic in any meaningful way, but she is still trying to figure it out.

HISTORY
Born in Montreal, Canada, Selene was the daughter of a tech entrepreneur, William, and his wife, Claire, a quiet woman who worked at a niche book store. Selene’s father’s job would cause him to travel the world, often bringing his new family along with him to see many different countries. This international upbringing caused Selene to develop a very accepting world view. Besides picking up different languages, Selene would also learn about the different faiths and beliefs held by those around the world. This left Selene with an openness towards the supernatural.

Growing up, Selene would always be closer to her father, being something of a daddy’s girl. He was the one taking her on vacations, the one buying her nice things. While Selene understood that her mother loved her, Claire Bouchard was a pretty big mystery to her daughter. This dynamic meant that Selene was blissfully unaware of the screwed up dynamic between her parents.

By the time Selene was entering her teens, she had decided to adopt goth culture, dying her dirty blond hair black. Initially not thinking this change of style would be an issue, Selene would be surprised when her father came down hard on her decisions. However, instead of causing her to bend to William’s wishes, this response just caused her to rebel harder against him.

The next few years would stretch the relationship between father and daughter, as their bond dissolved in many pointless disputes. It was during this time that Selene would find an unlikely supporter in her mother, as Claire was all about free expression. As Selene got closer to her mother, this caused rage in her father. This would culminate in Selene being awoken in the middle of the night by an argument between her parents. Selene would sneak down the stairs, only to see her father slap his mother. Selene would then rush in and shove her father away.

This was the final straw, as Selene and her mother moved out the next day. Leaving behind William’s wealth, the Bouchard women would get as far away from Montreal as they could, ending up somehow in the small town of Ashwood Hollow. Starting over from scratch, Selene would enroll in Ashwood Academy, immediately finding herself an outcast. The Bouchard would barely get by in a small apartment, Claire getting a job at Foxgloves Books & Oddities.

To further complicate Selene’s life, magic began to enter it. It all started when Selene went to take a drink from a water fountain at school, only to gain the recent memories of the last person to drink from it. Initially considering it just her imagination, this phenomenon kept happening, Selene getting faint memories from whatever she touched. Thinking that she was going crazy, Selene would decide to confide in her mom.

To Selene’s surprise, her mother knew exactly what was happening to her daughter. Claire would reveal that she herself was a witch, as was Selene. Claire had been a part of a coven in Quebec for several years, before fearing her powers and leaving for Montreal. While Claire wanted to not explore her own powers, she was open for Selene to explore her own.

With these answers, Selene decided to master her powers. After a few months of trying, Selene was able to touch an object without drawing forth a memory, this power only activating when she wanted it to. However, her experimentation with her magic would draw the attention of other witches. While Claire had wished to avoid magic, fate seemed to intervene when they moved to Ashwood Hollow as there was a coven of witches present in the town.

Confronted in the girl’s washroom at Ashwood Academy, Selene would be shocked to be offered a spot in the local coven. Figuring it would help her understand her magic better, Selene would accept. Graduating from the academy not too long afterwards, Selene would decide to hold off going to college to remain in Ashwood Hollow. While unemployed for a few months after graduating, Selene would get a job at a recently opened independent gaming store.

Now having worked at store for years, Selene has become a key part of the Ashwood Hollow coven. While still trying to master her magic, Selene has also became aware of the weird stuff happening in town lately. She has considered asking her mother for help, but knows that she still doesn’t want to be involved with magic. So Selene kind of feels like she’s on her unknown against the supernatural.

FAMILY
  • William Bouchard: A wealthy tech entrepreneur from Montreal, William has lived an international life. While appearing friendly and gracious, he has a hidden rage that he doesn’t know how to deal with. This anger is what led Selene and her mother to leave him and start over somewhere else. Selene hasn’t had any contact with him in a few years.
  • Claire Bouchard: Growing up on a farm in northern Quebec, Claire would discover that she was a witch at a young age. Joining a local coven, Claire would stay with them until a conflict between two members led to a death. Fleeing the coven, Claire ended up in Montreal where she met William. After Selene was born, Claire made sure to be aware of if she developed magic. Eventually her marriage broke up and she took Claire to a faraway town, not consciously knowing it was a place of magic.

Name: Hana Bradford

Age: 22

Gender: Female

Sexuality: Heterosexual

Clothing style:

Hana's clothing style ranges anywhere from feminine, to tomboyish, to surfer chick. Normally, it all depends on what she grabs out of her closet. It isn't out of character to see her in jeans, sneakers, and a t-shirt, or a crop top. She wears a few accessories every now and than, a few bracelets, a choker, yet she is never seen without her necklace. She usually keeps to clothing that can hide her tattoo that runs down the left side of her rib cage to keep people from asking about it.

Personality:

Hana can best be described as laid back, confident, and playful. When it comes to find fun things to do in an eerie town of 2000 people, Hana's you're girl. She's the girl who brings people to fun places to cheer them up when they're having a bad day, she's the type of person to lend an ear to vent, or take someone for a run when she feels they need to get some frustration out. When it comes to the coven, she treats them like her family, it being the only family she's ever known. She's the big sister of the group, and lets everyone know it by doing what big sisters do. Anyone she is close to is subject to light teasing and only she's allowed to do it. She has a bit of a rebellious streak as shown by the tattoo she has running down the side of her rib cage and some of the music she listens to.

There is another side to her, one that she tries not to show even when under pressure. Beneath the nonchalance, and confidence lies her fear, fear of losing what little she has, fear of failing, abandonment, and many other things. She helps people how she can, but refuses to accept help when she needs it, and gets frustrated when forced to accept it. Part of it comes from her fear of being seen as weak by anyone. She wants to be the one who never has to rely on others, but deep down knows she can't be that type of person, especially not when working as part of a team. While she knows the difference a team makes, she will try to handle things on her own if she is given a chance. It takes a lot for her to swallow her pride, but it is not impossible.

Type of magic:

Flame Magic: Hana is able to cast magical spells and feats through fire, be it fire-based spells themselves or using fire itself as the medium for casting magic. The user is able to either physically or mentally generate and project fire from their body or make objects burst into flames. She is also able to either physically or mentally generate and project fire from her body or make objects burst into flames. Her magic also allows them her to utilize heat, either magically manipulating it or using it to cast spells. While she has dominion over fire through her magic, she is not fully in control of it. Her magic type requires control, discipline, and restraint. Things like strong emotions such as anger, fear, sorrow, and others may affect her control over it, even her falling unconscious could be dangerous when using it. Stamina plays a big part in her magic as well. If she overuses it, she may become exhausted.

History:
Hana found her way to the town about five years ago after being taken in by her "grandmother". Before she moved to Ashwood Hollow, she was homeless moving from alleyway to alleyway. Her father passed when she was ten and her mother was became a junkie often leaving her and her younger sister to fend for themselves. She often had to resort to stealing to feed her and her sister, even having run-ins with the law from time to time.

When she turned fourteen, her and her sister were sent to an orphanage where they would spend the next two years. Her and her sister would be separated when she was adopted leaving Hana on her own at the age of sixteen, like the other teens, Hana wasn't what parents were looking for; why buy the car with more mileage and all that.

She stayed in the orphanage for another six months, while the orphanage wasn't a terrible place to live, she was tired of being in the system and ran away taking to the streets.
Turning back to what she knew how to do, she stole and begged to get by. Life was hard for her then, but at least she could call the shots in her own life. She slept in alleyways and underpasses for two years and survived off of what the local churches could give. She frequented one church that had a youth program run by the pastor where she would learn how to fight. She would even take part in a few rookie matches at the church in exchange for food, basic education, a room, and a place to shower.

Hana had never even thought about magic let alone the fact that it existed, and her discovery of it came in handy one night. Her emotions got the better of her one night after losing a fight, and was introduced to the world of magic through a poorly aimed enraged punch at a trash can that almost singed her eyebrows off. At first this newfound power of hers was easy to control and fun to use, a few pranks here, a fire to keep extra warm at night.

That would all change as her powers grew and she was not the only one who knew about her powers. She had recieved a letter in the mail that had a bus pass to a city called Ashwood Hollow. The contents of the letter said someone knew about her powers and offered her the chance to learn about her abilities.

Hana had thougt about it over the next few days as she continued staying at the church. A chance at a new life, a way to get away from the city that had nothing but bad memories, it all seemed too good to be true. She did want to leave, and she realized she couldn't stay at the church for the rest of her life, but going to a new city where she knew no one was a stupid idea to her.

Her choice would be made for her one night while she slept when she would accidently set the church on fire. She managed to make it out just before the building collapsed and grabbed the duffle bag with her things in it. While no one could have possibly known it was her, the guilt ate at her and the city she was born in that brought so many bad memories became to much to bear.

On the day of her seventeenth birthday, with nothing but a few changes of clothes and some boxing gloves she left her city, and arrived in Ashwood Hollow where she spent the next five years training and learning the ways of magic.
