The Way to be a Witch

Raena Rivend, third strongest amongst the witches of the Elderwood community, stood in the forest surrounded by green; surrounded by life and energy. She could feel the life of the forest, the breath of the air, and the energy of the stream nearby. Everything around her felt like it was feeding her power, strengthening her just by being there. The sun shone bright on her pale grayish skin, it made her look almost iridescent as she stood there. She tilted her head back to look at the sky, it was still today; the white clouds seemed to barely move against the bright sun that rested in the sky above her.

Today was the day when she was supposed to pick the witch that was going to be her apprentice. There were four witches that showed promise, three females and one male. They all surpassed her tests, tests of wit and will; all without using any magic ability at all. She already knew their capabilities when it came to magic. She also knew how far they could all stretch what magic they were able to control. What she didn't know was how intellectual they were and how far they could push their will before they broke. There was one that stood out among the four of them, and this was the one that was going to be chosen to be her apprentice. This person would learn to wield their magic just as well as she could, and maybe one day they would even surpass her.

The witches should be making their way here any time now, she had given them instructions on how to get to the general area but she had not told them exactly where she was located. If she knew the witches that she picked as well as she thinks she knew them then she knew the order in which they would arrive, the promising one would show first. Using their ability to sense aura they should be able to pick up on hers easily, especially with all of this energy feeding into her from the forest and the sky. She just hoped that it wouldn't take them too long to figure it out as she had not brought anything to pass her time.

Ildri Eld had followed the instructions that Raena had given her. They had lead her to the middle of a forest. Raena was no where in sight. The first thought that crossed Ildri's mind was that Raena was late. That was ridiculous though, why would the teacher be late to the naming of her apprentice? This must be one of the tests.

Something flashed by on Ildri's left. She looked and just caught a glimpse of the male candidate. Crap, she thought, I can't let him beat me, not again. She closed her eyes and concentrated. She'd only tried sensing aura's once before and it hadn't worked very well. She thought she'd figured it out now though, she needed to concentrate on finding the right level of heat. Nothing came to her at first and then, at an agonizing pace, he felt Raena's heat.

She ran. The boy was faster than her but he'd been going in a slightly wrong direction. She was starting to get tired, stumbling over every twig and stone. She came to an area of the forest that she could only describe as green. There was Raena. Ildri was the first there. She wiped the sweat off her brow and smiled. "Master Rivend," she addressed the witch, still slightly out of breath, "how are you this day?"

Raena only had to wait a few more minutes before one of the witches had shown up. She could sense the rest of the witches in the area; even though one of them had shown up she wasn't about to let the others off easy. They had to learn to use their aura sense well, even if they were not going to be her apprentice they still needed to be able to use their magic properly. There will come day when they will need to be able to defend themselves and they wont be able to do it if they can't sense their opponent coming. Without that advantage any starter witch would fail when confronted by an opponent.

She let out a soft chuckle and turned to see the witch that had made it to her first, she knew of course that it was Ildri before she turned around. Her aura gave her away and then her voice confirmed her suspicions. "Ildri, child, come and have a seat on the ground beside where I stand. Meditate white the others find me." She could sense the kindness in her voice, she cared deeply for the witches in her community but she knew she needed only take one witch on as her apprentice. All of them showed promise but only one had the will to become as strong as she possible could. If she gave up then she wouldn't be able to master any other form of magic than the one she was already proficient at. Every witch is born with a natural element, without years of practice you can't master any other. Raena was determined to have another witch with more than one proficiency than herself.

"And child..." She paused for a minute before she turned back around to face away from Ildri and look up to the sky once again. After a moment she spoke again "don't burn the ground on which you sit. This forest has a life, and that life is to not be harmed." Raena's natural element was energy, she was strongly connected to everything living around her; this is also something that her apprentice would have to learn to master. Because she is connected to the life of every living thing she takes tender care in making sure that it is not harmed.

"Yes Master." Ildri paused before she followed Raena's instructions. She checked that her skin wasn't burning. It wasn't. She checked her emotional state. She was nervous, yes, but she was very excited to be here first. She didn't think she was going to accidentally burn anything right at that moment. It wasn't completely normal for her to accidentally burn things anymore, but it wasn't unheard of either.

Sitting down on the ground next to Raena, Ildri closed her eyes and tried to clear her thoughts. It was then that she realized that Raena had been trying to teacher her something. Her primary element might be fire, and fire might be destructive, but she needed to try not to be because everything around her mattered. She smiled at this realization. The she frowned because she realized that she had failed in clearing her thoughts and meditating.

She concentrated on her eyes being closed. She could feel all the heat around her. The heat from the sun, the heat from Raena, the mild amount of heat coming from the ground she was sitting on. After a few minutes she felt someone approach. She couldn't be sure but she thought it was the boy. Concentrating on her breathing, Ildri tried to only think of the mild heat and of quiet.

Raena looked down at Ildri sitting beside of her, it looks like she had taken her hint about focus her energy and meditating without harming the ground around her. It would be important for her to know not to harm those that are living around her. The strongest form of magic, energy, would be drawn from all of this life. She would one day learn to harness this magic naturally, to draw power from all the living things around her and thus be as powerful as ever. But first she must learn how to live amongst these things without harming them.

It took another fifteen minutes before all of the witches arrived at the meeting spot. The final witch whom arrived was out of breath. She was an air witch, she was able to draw her magic from the air all around her and the air inside of her lungs as well. She should not be out of breath, which meant that she was not proficient at sensing aura without it draining her magic. She stumbled and fell to the ground, landing hard on the ground and crushing the grass beneath her. She tried to grab a branch on her fall and it snapped off. Raena's head shot to the side "Midori!" She yelled, she felt a small pain inside of her chest as the branch fell to the ground, lying there without anymore life inside of it. "This land is precious to us! If you are to fall and harm yourself you do not need to harm this forest along with you!" She knew that she sounded harsh but this is a lesson that these witches needed to learn.

The others were looking at her, watching her every move. She knew they wanted to react. The male wanted to go and help the girl up but he didn't move, he just watched Raena carefully. "Ildri, get up child. It is time I spoke to all of you." She hesitated for only one moment before she pointed to a large tree positioned a few paces in front of her "I want you all to go and sit in front of that tree... and listen to what I have to say." After all of the witches were over there she proceeded to tell each of their strengths and weaknesses in the previous tests. Then she paused once more. "I want each of you to tell me who you think my apprentice should be and why."

She knew that each of them would say that they deserved to be the apprentice, that each of them would want this so badly that they would boast themselves to make it out like they were the only choice. She was just hoping that one of them would have understood through their previous tests that they must never assume that they are the best. Assuming you are the best can put you at a disadvantage with your opponent, especially if they had been holding back on purpose to let them think that they were the stronger of the two.

Ildri heard the air witch fall, heard her snap off the branch. She flinched as she felt the small amount of heat it had had seep out of it and felt the Raena was right in reprimanding her. She got up when Raena told her to. She went and sat beneath the tree. She listened to Raena tell them how they'd done in their last test. Ildri heard her weaknesses. She knew she had them, she excepted that, but she needed to make them better. She knew she could do better.

She listened to her peers tell Raena why they should be her apprentice. They were all so gloated on self pride, even after hearing that they had weaknesses. They had only heard their strengths and they were playing on those. Ildri blocked them out. She didn't want to hear, yet again, how they knew they were better than her. She knew they they were better, each in their own way, but she was better too. She thought of the boy as she swirled her fingers around in the grass, being careful not to pick any of it. He had beaten her at almost everything. He was faster, stronger, smarter.

When it came time for her to speak she raised her eyes to look at Reana. "I want to be your apprentice. I want to tell you that I know I could do better, I want to be better from the core of who I am. I don't think I'm the best here though. The best is Roden. He has been the best at every one of your challenges. I don't want you to pick him, but I think you should." Ildri lowered her eyes. What she had just said had made her very upset. She could feel her tears evaporating off her hot cheeks. She took a few deep breaths to calm herself. It was just what she needed right now, to set the whole area aflame.

Raena watched as Midori looked ashamed at herself for tripping and being called out. This was the spot that Raena came to in order to meditate, it is away from the community and the point at which the most energy is accumulated. There was a stream nearby that led into a river, a clear opening for the sun to shine through, and plenty of large trees surrounding the entirety of the area. It was the perfect area for a witch who harnesses energy to come. There had been only one other with who could harness energy in the community and that had been Raena's original teacher. She had died when she was just a young witch though. It was up to her to continue practicing on her own.

She listened carefully to each witch boasting about themselves, targeting only their key strengths. It was true that each of these young witches were strong, they all had powers that could not be matched by any other witch their age in the village. It was also true, however, that they had a lot of weaknesses. A witch who could not acknowledge their own weakness is a witch that is doomed to fail. She then heard Ildri speak, she was sincere when she was saying that she wanted to be picked and she wanted to be better. Then she did something that Raena was not expecting, she said that it should not be her who was chosen but it should be Roden, the only male witch that had made it past her tests. She lowered her head to look at her feet standing on the grass below her, barely bending it. She started to look back up and caught site of Ildri carefully spinning the grass between her fingers, being careful not to damage it. She reminded Raena so much of the witch that she had been when she was younger; so unsure of herself, yet full of unrecognized potential.

"Ildri, you surprise me" she spoke with a soft voice as she looked over to the young witch. "It is you who I have chosen as my apprentice, I knew before any of you made it here." Her mouth tightened as she spoke, she was frowning now thinking of how all these young witches would fail in their future battles if they were not trained correctly; the least she could do was to give them an explanation to help them. "A confident witch is a successful witch, however, an over-confident witch is a dead one" she offered no other words before letting the energy glow around her hand and pointing behind her. "I have marked the path back to the village, you may all leave now. All except Ildri."

Ildri heard what Raena said. She couldn't believe it. She had been chosen by this magnificent witch to be her apprentice. Her uneasiness dissipated. The tears stopped and her cheeks cooled down. She had made it. No matter what she would be better. She would live up to this choice and become the best witch she could possibly be. Hearing the lesson the Raena had for the younger witches, Ildri smiled. She needed to work on her own confidence, this was true, but it was something she knew she could do.

She watched the other witches walk away down the path that Raena had given them. They all looked visually upset. Roden was even glaring at Ildri. She waited until she could no longer feel their heat. She wasn't sure if she should stand but she felt kind of awkward being the only one sitting on the ground. She stood anyway and looked at Raena. She wasn't sure what to say. That wasn't normal for her, usually she knew exactly what to say, but how do you thank someone for giving you the opportunity of a lifetime?

She pondered for a few minutes on if she should say anything at all. She decided that it would be incredibly rude not to so she would try. "Thank you," she began a little timidly, "I honestly didn't think it would be me. I truly appreciate the opportunity you've given me to try and be the best that I can be. I won't let you down." She ended strong and as she said them, Ildri knew her last words were true. She would do anything to keep this position as apprentice to Raena Rivend.

Raena listened as the others walked away, their spirits broken. She closed her eyes and felt the energy moving farther and farther away from her. It isn't what she wanted, to break their spirits. But she could only have on apprentice, this community could not handle more than one and she knew she would not be strong enough to teach more than one. Especially witches such as those that couldn't learn the simplest of her lessons. She knew they were listening to her when she spoke to them, but she didn't know if they had understood her lesson or not. It was sad to know that these witches might not survive if there was a war to ensue.

She listened to Ildri thank her, saying that she didn't think she was really the one that was going to be picked. "
You are talented child, and full of promise. That is why I have decided to make you my apprentice" her words rang true as she spoke. The young witch did still have much to learn, and it would take years until she could stand toe to toe with Raena herself, much less Morris the community leader. She took a deep breath and felt the energy of the forest, the young witch would have to leave her family and come live on the forest's edge with Raena, she had not told that to her or her family yet. She had to make the decision herself after the fact. If she chose not to come with her then she would choose the next in line to be her apprentice, or she may not take an apprentice at all this year.

"
You have a lot to work on, and we need to get started as soon as possible." She spoke with a certain tone, the voice of a teacher "You will come and tay with me in my home on the forests' edge. Of course, this decision is left up to you." It was not her place to force this young witch to come with her. She would leave the last step in her hand. With these words Raena turned and started to walk away. Ildri had the option of following her, going to her family and packing the showing up, or going home and not taking the position as her apprentice.

Ildri stood where she was for a few moments. It was a great thing to be chosen as apprentice to Raena. Did she really want to leave her mother though? She thought of her mother, how proud she had been that she'd gotten this far. She had been planning a part in the hopes that her daughter was chosen. They were going to have the party anyway if she wasn't picked, just to celebrate how far she'd gotten.

Ildri wasn't fond of the thought of not showing up for this party but she wanted so very much to follow Raena to the edge of the forest right then. To leave everything behind her so she wouldn't be distracted. She closed her eyes and preformed the one magical thing she could do that didn't have much to do with fire. Her mom had taught her how, though it didn't always go though. She sent a message to her mother. I have been chosen by Master Raena. Go ahead and have the party in my honor without me. I'm going to start right away. She didn't get a response. It must not have worked. She'd try again later.

Taking a few steps forward, Ildri let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. She felt free. It wasn't like she could do anything she wanted, she'd have to follow what Raena said, but this was her choice. The first choice she'd ever made completely on her own. It was exhilarating. She took a few more steps forward. Then she was following Raena in ernest.
"I'm coming." Her words barely came out a whisper.

Raena didn't pause while Ildri stood there trying to decide on what she was going to do. She Heard her trying to send out a message to her mother, that was smart of her. She thought about interrupting her spell for a moment but that would only cause her new student angst. The side of her mouth twitched into a half smile when the girls energy levels dropped just the slightest, the spell must have failed. You have much to learn Ildri, and I will be the one to teach you she thought to herself as she heard the girl hastily moving towards her. She could hear her mumble something that sounded like 'I'm coming' but she couldn't be too sure since she was not able to hear her. Although she was a powerful witch there was no way to increase your natural hearing. She had heard of some witches speaking to animals to have them as spies, she had not yet mastered the way of animal magic though, she had been practicing for nearly a year and was able to speak to a few animals but not all of them. That would be something she would need to make sure that Ildri understood... there are a multitude of magic styles out there and there had never been a witch to master every single magi. She was the only one to master as many as she had and she would keep trying to learn until the day she died. She figured she would be able to master animal magic in the next few months. Then that could be taught to Ildri as well.

Once the young witch had caught up to her she decided to speak to her, she had originally intended on staying silent until she had gotten to her cottage in order to leave her with her thoughts, but she wanted to know what was going through her mind. "
What of your family, child?" She had grown up without her family so it wasn't difficult for her to be away from anyone, but this girl had a family; she had people who cared about her so much, it must pain her to leave them without going to pack first.

It didn't take Ildri too long to catch up with Raena. She was very motivated to get started with her magical training. Once she'd caught up she took a deep breath to catch her breath and answered Raena's question. "I'm not sure. I know they were planning on celebrating with me when I got back, with good or bad news. I guess they'll just have to celebrate without me." Ildri wasn't completely sure how her family would react when she didn't come home. Her mother would probably cry at least a little bit but Ildri comforted herself in thinking that her mom would probably guess and understand what happened.

As she walked, Ildri drank in her surroundings. Her mother had often taken her out into this forest when she was younger. She had thought that nature was probably the best thing for Ildri to be around. Ildri had always been scared of burning it down and one time she had burned a few shrubs. They came less frequently after that. She wasn't sure if Raena wanted to hear it or not but she had to say one last thing about her mother. If for no other reason than to give her sentimentality somewhere to go.
"My mother has been trying to teach me so far. If it hadn't been for her I don't think I could have made it far enough to see this day."

Ildri didn't want to say anymore. Not just because she wasn't sure what Raena would think, but because she felt kind of like crying. It was a weird feeling. On the one hand she was so extremely happy that the tears could have been from joy. On the other hand she was very upset that her communications spell hadn't worked. She took another couple of deep breaths. It helped. She smiled and looked up at the sky. The sun was still shining brightly, though it was beginning its decent. Ildri felt the warmth from the sun on her skin. Nothing could ever calm her moods like feeling the warmth of the sun.

Raena listened as Ildri spoke about the party that her mother was planning on having, whether the child was to get the apprenticeship or not. She had never had anything like that when she was a child so this girl was lucky. She was going to have a hard life for these next few years in training, expending most of her energy everyday would prove to wear her down. She deserved to celebrate before she left. Raena would show her around her cottage before she used her magic to transport herself and the child to her family's home. She would allow her to celebrate for two hours and then they would have to return to her cottage to do the afternoons chores and prepare supper. The first day of training would begin tomorrow. She had planned on starting training today but this girl needed to see her family. Although she was trying to act as if it wasn't bothering her, she knew it was.

Your daughter, Ildri, has earned the right to be my apprentice. I am taking her to my cottage and then I will return her for the party. I must speak with you before we leave again. She sent a message effortlessly to Ildri's mother, making sure to make the message seem as relaxed as possible. She would explain that Ildri must stay with her during her training. She would be able to see her family once a month, not any more than that; one day a month without practice would be as much as a young witch could take away from her training without ruining her focus. "Your mother has done a well enough job, your control over fire is stronger than other witches of the fire whom are your age" she knew acknowledging Ildri's mother would make her happy, she didn't need her being miserable while she was undergoing training. Her will was strong but it was not unbreakable, when she had an iron will like Raena that is when she would be able to go until she died.

They walked for a good fifteen more minutes before they got to Raena's cottage, it was on the outskirts of the forest away from all other witches. There was an area that she had ground the earth into sand, the sand was scorched all around. This is where she had practiced her fire magic, this is were Ildri would practice hers as well, and when she was at her breaking point this is where she would go to let her flames corrupt her until her head was cool again. "Look around child, and return to me with your questions."

Ildri sensed that Raena was doing something, sending a message possibly, but she wasn't completely sure. If it was a message, she wondered who she'd be sending it to. The compliment to her and her mother was wonderful. Ildri had always looked up to her mother and was proud to be told that all the training had been for something. She walked along in silence, following slightly behind Raena so she could look at her surroundings. She loved the forest though all the wood and other flammable things scared her a little.

It was about fifteen minutes after the compliment that they reached a cottage on the outskirts of the woods. Ildri heard Raena tell her to look around. She did so without saying a word. Her eyes were immediately drawn to a patch of scorched sand. She went over an kneeled in the middle of it. Kneeling down she picked up two handfuls of the sand and breathed in it's scent. The sand wasn't hot at the moment but it did smell like fire. The scent gave Ildri a higher sense of power. She let the sand fall from her hands and looked at the cottage. She went over to the door and looked back at Raena for confirmation that she could open the door and go in.

Raena watched as Ildri walked around, and when she picked up the sand. She knew that she could feel the power from the flame that had scorched the land. She was a witch of the flame, she drew her power from flames. She would even learn to draw her power from the rays of the sun and the hot air once Raena had taught her. Once she mastered energy magic she would be able to hear her energy into blue flames, she was unsure if these flames would be more powerful with a natural witch of the flame though. As she saw the young witch walk towards her cottage door she nodded confirming that she could enter.

She walked to the door of her small home and stood just inside the doorway so that Ildri would have plenty of time to look around. It wasn't much, two small bedrooms, a living and dining area, a kitchen, and a bathroom. Her cottage was, however, unlike any others; she had no water line and no gas for her stove, anything that requires energy had no electric. Her home ran off of her magic, Ildri would soon be able to use everything in her home as well. For the time being Raena would have to provide her comforts such as ice to cool with and water to bathe in. She knew the young witch could manage the flame to cook with, and get the fireplace going for heat. She would restrict her from the finer things such as the radio until she could harness the energy to use them herself, and she had a long way to go before she was ready to harness her own energy and release it, much less the energy of all things around her.

Ildri stepped into the small cottage. She looked around in amazement. She stood in the middle of the main room and spun in a slow circle. She noticed the absence of a gas line instantly, gas causes fire after all. She also vaguely realized that there was no electricity. Her mom had only installed electricity two years ago because both her and Ildri had been getting tired of Ildri not being able to work it for herself. There was an absence of the hum that had been added to their home since its installation. Ildri guessed that everything in this home was run by magic and she was fascinated.

She headed over to look at the bedrooms. She stepped into the one that she assumed was hers. There was a bed, a closet, a nightstand, and a desk with a chair. It was simple. It was small. Ildri liked it. She had always felt like her room at home was too large. Her mom spoiled her. A big room, lots of presents, lots of clothes. Ildri never knew what to do with it all. She left the room and looked at Raena standing just inside the doorway. "I love your home," she gushed. "It's so simple. So," Ildri paused to find the right word, "elegant." Not knowing what else to say, Ildri went into the kitchen to investigate the stove.
