Fantasy The Underworld Breathes: A Monster Fantasy

Magnificent Humanicorn

Our Stalwart Protector

Days of Refuge, Days of Doom

From the beginning we remember the wall, our stalwart protector, whose white heights and invariable breadth possess the horizon. We remember the gods that built it, master craftsmen of the earth. They carved it from the bones of the ancient prometheans, sealed it with the blood of our elders, and gave it purpose; to protect us from the evils that reside in the hearts of men.

Our horrors with the wall are lesser. We have war, but we also have peace. We have death, but we also have life. We have hate, but we also have love. We are not bereft in our iniquity; we are thankful.

But we are also afraid. Though our master says not a word and feels not a thing, we know to tremble at offending it. No sane man has touched it at any time; the insane pay with their lives. For its eyes, ever vigilant on our horizon, cut fear into every living thing. Its daunting gaze intimidates even the dumb animals; birds never dare soar past its prodigious frame; cattle never graze in sight of its reaching shadow.

And yet without warning, the relative peace of our civilization was torn asunder. The Day of Calamity; when bison herds rampaged across the plains, when the birds huddled in trees and would not fly, when blackness enveloped the sky like a starless night. The Underworld breathed its dark depths from across the world; the skies wept ashen rain; and we crossed the white river to find despair.

Our wall, reduced to rubble.

“We are doomed,” it was said. “Lay down and die!” For on that day, a mighty roar pierced through the black fog. Over the crumbles of our fallen protector swarmed the shifting shadows, the living darkness whose sword is death. The darkness moved as if alive, and though the men of the six cities did all to flee, they had not the speed, and thus it was that the thousand thousands were swallowed up in the corruption that dominates the hearts of men.

Even still Our Holy Hearth, the Seventh City, shone in the swarming shadows, for in her vaults lay preserved the Golems Three, the bearers of prophecy.

To save she who gained their favor, the gods stirred, and, shining with otherworldly glow, the golems came alive. These titans who rival the gods protected our city from the reaches of darkness, and gave us the gift of peace within her walls. Yet we fear idleness, for we see etched on their bodies the pieces of prophecy; One, the man below an eclipse; Two, the maiden stolen away; Three, the beast of a thousand serpents.

The gods remember us, so we hope in the glow of the golems that protect Our Holy Hearth. But they hold only pieces. The rest lies in the world’s rubble.

Every drakken, giant, man, and thinking thing that yet holds the will to live shall join with this divine quest. So you, if you have the grit, hesitate not for a moment. Set out and do all to find the lost pieces of prophecy.

What are we looking for? Oh, six players, though we may manage to fit eight. Preferably players ready to collaborate, function as a team, and take the risks of this adventure by the horns.

If you have a race or culture, we encourage you to suggest it! We'd love to incorporate your ideas.

This is a collaborative effort between

I have so many ideas, but one of my favorites was a forest-dwelling society that spent a lot of time and energy on healing through knowledge in herbs and anatomy.

Hmm, I was possibly thinking of a race whom dwelled deep in the underground and mountains who often remain secluded because of the amount of distrust other's had of them.

Which stems from their odd creations; They'd only be known because of their fairly "advanced" tech. Intricate Clockwork creations and wondrous Architecture, Engineering, Jewelcraft and Artistry.

Definitely, see need some pictures and thoughts of whether that would even be viable.

Oh and question, Is magic a thing in this?

@Killigrew

Ooh, it's refreshing to see someone writing a fantasy RP post in an appropriate tone. Too often have I seen use of painfully modern colloquialisms in something ostensibly medieval in atmosphere. That was a great intro!

Hmm, I'm interested in possibly playing a giant! What are giants like in this setting- if you have a predetermined idea of them, that is!

Giants are up for disclosure and general ideas. They're there, but no solidified form of culture or appearance.

Thanks for the reply! I would be interested in playing one if they appear generally-human-but-larger, rather than something along the lines of Skyrim's rendition of giants as more... brutish. Almost animalistic.

@St Indigo No magic in the conventional sense of the term. While there may be some sword that is burning hot to the touch or a flower with the nectar to save a man from death, there are no fire-slinging mages or secret words that stop time. I suppose while this is fantastical and supernatural, maybe even seer types that dream of the future, the world has no magic that bends nature to one's will.
