    A tall, dark skinned young man with white hair and light eyes that are usually shielded by a pair of sunglasses. Sporting a sturdy frame, it's clear that he takes his job as an Exterminator seriously.

    His Exterminator uniform consists of a black leather jacket illuminated by the group's signature red stripes on his sleeves, black pants, a red Gear Glove and black boots with sheets of flint attached to the soles to create sparks when friction is created. He keeps a flame brooch on the left breast of his jacket as homage to his home town of Pyr.

    Personality


    Fun-spirited, charismatic, laid-back. These are all words that have been used to describe Mars Barnett in the past. The fiery, rock-loving leader of the Exterminators' Team Gunnar has a bright, relaxed personality and is friendly to most people- unless they somehow manage to rub him the wrong way. He has a slightly childish demeanor, unafraid to make jokes about others or say what's on his mind without regard for any consequences that may follow, and his manners could definitely use some work.

    Mars' ideals align well with those of the Exterminators, as he is always heavily determined to keep casualty and injury rates at zero when on a job. He holds humanity's safety in high regard and has a strong disdain for Gigapods and criminals. While he tries to keep a cool head, a more serious, aggressive side can jump out depending on the situation he's in.

    Being the 'Champion' of his hometown, Mars is confident but surprisingly humble in regards to his accolade and combat prowess. In fact, he actually tends to avoid praise and attention, calling it "annoying".

    Lean, athletic build. Sharp, green eyes. Fair skin. She's fairly tall, but doesn't tower over many. When on the field, she is often seen with her helmet, and rarely removes it. It gives her voice a distorted timbre, accompanied by static. Her hair is often barely kept, but those who have had the opportunity to touch it have commented that it is pleasantly soft, indicating that she values hygiene enough to keep it clean and soft, but pays very little attention to aesthetics.

    McDowell is an unprofessional, outspoken brute, often equated to a force of nature. Despite her cape signifying her veterancy amongst her Sawyer comrades, she lacks any strong leadership skills, and her first port of call for any situation is to refer to someone else smarter or more capable for instructions, and if that is unavailable, she opts for the gratuitous application of violence. At very best, she might be able to rally other like-minded individuals like her, but smarts and strategies aren't exactly her thing. When she isn't busy shooting up Gigapods or maintaining her gear, she is lazy and nonchalant about most things, and would rather laze around until something comes up where she gets to do what her job description entails.

    In short, she is the very model of a Sawyer Shocktrooper.

    Off duty, McDowell is a notorious booze hound, and a very generous one at that. If she's at a party, one can assume she's buying drinks for everyone. Live everyday as if it were your last, she believes, and what better way to do that than get shitfaced and party the night away?

    McDowell is crazy, but not suicidal. She will readily agree with the most insane plans, but will actually back off if she sees that there is actually no chance of survival. While she enjoys being in the fight, she is intelligent enough to know when to back off. She doesn't engage in stupid heroic acts and last stands, and, if given command, will prioritise lives over the strategy where possible. As an affiliate, she is not bound to following every command that she is given. At best, she will argue vehemently for the option of life, and at worst, she will turn tail and run at the last possible second when faced with odds that she cannot possibly beat. Getting paid was nice, but living another day to collect is even better. In this sense, she makes for a terrible commander.

A young Entoman who was turned after surviving the bite of an Arachnid Gigapod as a child, Maylee experienced the double-edged sword of being able to pass entirely as human. This advantage, as well as her venom-oriented abilities, led to her being groomed as a child assassin for years until she joined up with the Plague. Although she resonated with their Entoman-oriented agenda at first, the atrocities they committed under their new leader led her to a reckoning, and she abandoned the group of extremists, enlisting with the Exterminators in an effort to fight on the right side of history and atone for her past misdeeds. With abilities revolving around the lethal stealth of the widow spider, though, it’s difficult to shake off her past, and at times she wonders whether it’s too late for her to change for the better. Ultimately, she tells herself, it can't be too late to try.

Her dark brown hair, long and straight and fine in texture, is usually worn in twin braids, the same way she has worn her hair all her life—in part due to its practicality in keeping her hair contained in a combat situation, and in part due to a lingering attachment to a childhood she quietly grieves. Her brown eyes, a similar shade to her hair, are usually hardened in an attempted image of steely determination, but they all too often betray her true feelings, flashing with glimpses of regret or vulnerability or sorrow. The only evidence of her less-than-human nature is a pair of elongated, retractable fangs and a red hourglass-shaped blemish on her lower back, the unmistakable mark of a black widow.

Maylee is usually standing stiffly at attention, on-guard with her brow furrowed. She gives off a bit of a brooding demeanor, a seriousness that can feel a bit ungainly: indeed, her grim expression is often a clumsily-constructed cover for a hesitance and uncertainty when it comes to approaching other people: in other words, a shyness that she finds quite embarrassing. She wears this stern attitude like armor, distancing others from a heart that is, in reality, quite soft and easily punctured. As a child, Maylee wore her kind, gentle heart on her sleeve, tempered only by a timid streak: she felt things deeply and visibly and was easily moved to tears of either joy or sorrow. Her heart, however, has bled and scabbed over too many times for her to leave it bare, and she now regards her hidden compassion and sensitivity with insecurity, resenting the child she was as too weak to protect herself when she needed it. She has fought ever since to leave that part of herself behind, locking it away in an effort to prove that she is strong—to herself as much as to others.
As an Exterminator, she is dutiful and indefatigable, often forgetting to rest in between her rigorous training. Due to years of being thrust into dangerous situations because of her abilities, she learned to disconnect from her own body’s sensations of pain and weakness, to view herself as a weapon with no needs. As a result, Maylee is able to work through tremendous pain and exertion, but she is cripplingly unaware of her own limits. Even at the point of collapse, she views her incapacitation as a failure that can be worked through with enough brute force rather than a sign that she needs to stop lest she cause herself irreversible damage. She is similarly single-minded outside of combat scenarios: Maylee has always had a loyal streak, a full-hearted devotion to the people she cares about. After years of being stepped on for her weakness, Maylee is incredibly slow to trust, and so, when someone does manage to earn her trust, she devotes herself to them even to her own detriment. Her diamond-hard trust, though it may crack, is loath to break, and indeed, she has a difficult time moving on from once-treasured bonds even if they descend into ugly, harmful distortions of what they once were.
Beneath her tough, steely attitude and soldier-like persona, Maylee is every bit the same soft-hearted, sensitive child she once was; though her skin has toughened, her heart is just as tender, her feelings as deep and consuming. What has changed, though, is her innocence—no longer a naive child, Maylee has learned firsthand about cruelty and harm. As a result, while she is still capable of great empathy and compassion, she is equally capable of immense rage if she feels her trust has been breached. Even as this quiet wrath stirs beneath her skin of steel, however, at her very core she is still a gentle girl that longs for nothing more than to live quietly and peacefully with the people she loves, even if she views that kind of life and those kinds of bonds as something out of reach.

Maylee lived her earliest years jumping from settlement to settlement with her mother, a woman every bit as sharp and cold as steel. Vehemently, her mother tried to instill in Maylee both the knowledge that the world was an unforgiving place and the skills needed to survive in it. Unfortunately for her, her daughter was her polar opposite, soft and sensitive and easily stirred to tears, and like any flesh in the Underground that wasn't protected by a sturdy exoskeleton, that made her an easy target. Maylee likes to think that, if she had had more time, maybe she would have learned to be the daughter her mother wanted her to be, but they were separated after a giant, hulking spider attacked the village they were staying in, utterly devastating it. After surviving the venomous bite of the Gigapod and enduring the nightmarish transformation into an Entoman, Maylee was adopted by one of the Exterminators who drove away the arachnid horror. Together with him, his husband, and their adopted son—another Entoman they had taken in under similar circumstances—she enjoyed a peaceful few years in Skybound, slowly recovering day by day from the trauma the encounter with the Gigapod—and the bloody wreckage left in its wake—had borne deep into her bones. But when her adopted brother ran away, she followed him, hoping to quickly convince him to return home—instead, they never set foot in Skybound together again.
She and her brother were kidnapped by a ring of traffickers who, quickly spotting her brother as an Entoman, sought to sell him off to the many thugs who would pay top dollar for a child Entoman they could mold into their own personal attack dog. Seeing her as nothing more than a little human tagging along, they planned to dispose of her—until she bit down on the arm of one of her captors, causing him to collapse in a fit of agonizing pain. From there, their attention turned sharply to her.
Maylee and her brother were separated, and she spent much of the rest of her childhood being used as a tool at best and a weapon at worst by the unscrupulous adults around her. The advantage of being an Entoman who could pass entirely for human meant no one suspected her as a threat, and so she was molded into a child assassin, luring in various targets with her innocent appearance and then swiftly paralyzing them with a venom-laced bite, leaving them wide open for a killing blow. She didn't like to kill. At first, she cried and begged and pleaded, but punishment for disobedience was swift and harsh. Finally, Maylee began to understand the lessons her mother had tried to instill in her—the world really was a cruel place, a place where softness couldn't survive. Though she never grew to truly silence the guilt and anguish of staining her hands with blood, Maylee finally grew a hard exoskeleton around her heart to protect it. No one else was going to, after all.
After years of enduring as a weapon, Maylee found her brother again when he intercepted one of her targets. At first, she almost didn't recognize the scarred, intimidating young man who looked nothing like the scrawny little boy she used to play hide-and-seek with. Something had clearly changed in him, a new, dark leaf turned, but she ignored the signs out of relief at finding him still alive. His eyes flashed as he told her about where he was headed, a paradise for Entomen, their own world where they never had to be feared or used again. There, she wouldn't have to wrestle with the guilt of killing anymore—all she needed to do was dirty her hands one last time. Together, they killed her captors and ran away, joining the Plague, a group of revolutionaries who sought to carve out a place in the world for Entomen.
It wasn't the paradise her brother had promised—they struggled often, scavenging for food and raiding settlements for supplies. Still, it was enthralling to finally be around others like her, and she couldn't help but nod quietly in agreement whenever their leaders ranted about the stigma and alienation they had faced. Even when scavenging turned to killing, she fought to justify it to herself. She was fighting for a good cause now. The world was cruel, and sometimes death was simply part of life in the face of an uncaring nature. The dark truth, though, was that once you talked yourself into killing once, every time thereafter became a little bit easier.
Finally, though, she reached a point of no return. Under a new leader, Zayan Mukade, whispers of discontent towards humans became boldly declared vendettas. Rumors abounded that he had somehow figured out how to harness the power of the Gigapods themselves, though Maylee didn't believe it—not until she saw it. It wasn't a raid—it was slaughter, pure and simple. While Maylee recoiled in horror at the carnage, she watched her brother revel in it, painting their apparent enemies' blood across his snarling face, and she realized she no longer knew who he was. A small squad of Exterminators quickly arrived to attempt to evacuate as many civilians as possible. Among their ranks, Maylee caught sight of a familiar face, and as she tried to call out to her adopted father, she watched her brother strike him down.
That night, Maylee left the Plague and never looked back. Working up the courage to approach one of the Exterminators' scouts wasn't easy, but she knew she had to—it was the only way to even begin to make up for all of the blood she'd spilled, all the wrong she'd done. For once, she wanted to fight to protect, not to harm. Returning to Skybound wasn't easy, either—facing her other adopted father and telling him of his husband's fate was more painful than that arachnid venom that had turned her into an Entoman to begin with all those years ago. But he deserved to know.
If Maylee had gotten what she wanted, she would have remained in Skybound forever with her parents and brother, the family that found her. But maybe she can find family again in the Exterminators who meant so much to her late father, and if she can save someone else's family, even just one, from being torn apart like hers, then—well, at least then she'll know her life meant something.

entoman overview - latrodectus hasselti
Otherwise known as the redback spider, a member of the dreaded family of black widow spiders. They are infamous for their venom, which contains a neurotoxin that induces latrodectism, a syndrome that besets the afflicted with nausea, muscle weakness, and intense pain. Likewise, Maylee possesses a potent venom, not just in her saliva, but in all of her bodily fluids. Just like the black widow spider, though, her venom is usually not lethal to humans on its own—rather, she relies on the intense pain and muscle spasms caused by her venom to make her target vulnerable to lethal force. The effects of her venom are directly proportional to the amount applied—a drop of venom may sting for a moment, but it won't have any lasting ill effects. In order to truly induce latrodectism, Maylee must either use a large amount of venom or prolong exposure on a concentrated area. The size of her target matters, too—a human doesn't take an egregious amount of venom to incapacitate, but a Gigapod requires a truly formidable amount to affect, similar to a bear tanking the effects of a tranquilizer gun.
In addition to her venom, Maylee's hair possesses some of the qualities of spider silk. It grows at a rapidly accelerated rate and is both tough and flexible, making it surprisingly useful in the application of various tools—though unlike spider silk, her hair does not stick or cling, limiting its application somewhat. Although of debatable usefulness, her hair is also completely waterproof.
Like a spider, Maylee is a stealthy, silent, and agile hunter. She possesses increased agility and flexibility compared to a human and is capable of feats of even grotesque contortion. Mobility is paramount when it comes to her combat style, as her smaller, lighter frame makes her less able to take direct hits than some of the bulkier Exterminators.

Maylee's venom is a useful tool in combat, but it is not usually her primary weapon in and of itself. She usually makes sure to prepare tools and weapons with her venom in advance, such as coating various knives with her venom in order to amplify the pain of each of her attacks. A single slash or stab is usually not enough to induce any potent effects, but over the course of a battle, the effects of multiple doses of venom gradually begin to build up. In a pinch, Maylee can also bite to quickly introduce her venom to a target's bloodstream, though this is less than ideal due to the extreme close quarters it requires. Her venom also serves as a natural defense mechanism in that her blood also contains venomous properties, meaning any splatter from a wound will at least cause physical pain for her attacker. While this is obviously not a strategy she tends to deliberately aim for due to the danger of being wounded in the first place, it at least gives her an opportunity to put some distance between her and her foe. In extreme situations, she may even wound herself in an effort to quickly get an attacker to withdraw.
Her hair's spider silk-like properties have limited use in direct combat, but its rapid growth allows her to cut it often to fashion into various tools. She often braids lengths of her hair into ropes to be used for rappelling and when recovering civilians from hazardous areas, and the microbial properties of spider silk, also imbued into her hair, allow her to make quick, temporary dressings for wounds when in the field. Perhaps its most useful application in terms of combat is its potential to be used as trip wires, either alerting Maylee to an approaching foe's presence or triggering a trap with the help of an Engineer's technology.

Maylee never enters combat without a variety of weapons primed with her venom. Her primary means of attack is usually a pair of combat knives coated in her venom that she wields in each hand, though she usually brings along an array of throwing knives for supplemental damage or to incapacitate smaller targets at a distance. She usually has a few of her "strongest" weapon clipped to her belt, a specialized grenade created with the expertise of an Engineer and infused with her blood. Upon exploding, these grenades let out a generous spray of her blood, and due to the high quantity of venom, this is the only weapon in her arsenal capable of instantly stunning or paralyzing a Gigapod (though the effect is temporary). The grenades are a precious resource, though, requiring her to donate large amounts of blood for the construction of each one and thus making their production slow, and so she is sure only to use them when backed into a corner or if absolutely necessary.
While unrelated to combat, Maylee also never goes on a mission without tucking an old, weathered stuffed rabbit in her backpack. It was a gift from her late adopted father, watching out for her in his stead.

Her currently living family consists of one of her adopted fathers, who is living in Skybound with her, and her adopted brother, who is still with the Plague and is, to say the least, no longer on friendly terms with her. She doesn't know her biological mother's exact fate—her mother was out hunting when the Gigapod attacked the village in Maylee's childhood, so part of her holds out hope that she's still alive out there somewhere, that her mother was too smart and too strong to be killed by a creature like that.

She will absolutely never admit it, but she's a complete hopeless romantic at heart and enjoys sad songs and sappy love stories. She guards this information as if it were a government-level classified secret.
Maylee also enjoys ballet, a passion that blossomed when she found a pair of pointe shoes in her mother's closet in one of their many impermanent homes. For a woman who had so few permanent belongings, she must have truly held those shoes dear to have kept them for so long, though when asked, Maylee's mother claimed she had meant to throw them out. Though her tiny feet couldn't fill the shoes at the time, Maylee began to practice in them, trying to catch a hint of what her mother must have felt while wearing those shoes. All these years later, ballet remains her only means of attempting to feel close to her mother.
On a less heavy note, Maylee also enjoys plants, though it can't be said that plants enjoy her. Though she has attempted to nurture a houseplant or two, they usually end up having to be rescued from the brink of death by her adopted father. Despite her efforts, Maylee continues to be something of a black thumb.

Maylee has a soft spot for strays and has befriended an orange tabby cat that started loitering around her home when she started feeding it. She named him 'Red.' Clearly, she isn't great at coming up with names.

    Lightning bugs are known for their striking glow that mesmerizes those that are lucky enough to see them sparkle. They're the cynosure of bugs: breathtaking, stunning, alluring.

    Nykia is none of those things.

    And, let me be clear, that isn't an issue. In fact, it's largely intended.

    The most distracting feature of Nykia's are her wings. They can't be hidden or obscured like her antennae, and she can't just hide them at will like her glow.

    And that's about as far as "noticeable" as Nykia cares to get. See, Nykia is, at heart, a hunter. And a hunter doesn't typically want to be spotted by their prey. So she keeps herself inconspicuous. With stone brown hair shaved into a mullet (for a little flair) and olive eyes that contrast (the only contrast) with the deep tone of her skin, Nyk's pretty discreet. At least, to bugs. She (especially when she's wearing her favorite camo get-up) blends in with the environment of the stone and rock walls that confine the people that live underground. Which is, at the end of the day, what matters most to Nykia. Camouflage.

    Beneath her clothes, though? Her masculine frame is marred with scars, and her belly? It glows. At will. Which she doesn't will often, but it can still do that. Just in case.

    To the naked eye? Nykia's all serious business. It doesn't help that she can't speak and covers at least half of her face most of the time; there's no nuance to add through her words or facial expressions. There's only stony facade and blank stare. She even looks... mean at times.

    She doesn't really mean to be, though.

    No, in reality, Nykia's a pretty chill person. She's doing what she loves every day, and she's doing it with a... scowl on her face. But so what? That doesn't mean she's not waking up every day, smelling the, uh, dirt, and getting giddy that she's really an Exterminator. (Which was only her second choice... But it's better than nothing! And not the point, anyway.)

    But it's visible in her eyes, the way she softens when someone speaks to her, the way they sparkle when she gets a kill.

    Xenos is an extremely zealous person, his mind and heart set on the study and mastery over Gaia and its many forms. He's a firm believer that Gaia is the key to reach a true utopia for humanity, and that it is an alchemist's responsibility that its power can be harnessed for the greater good, even if his method and ideas may tread a morally dubious ground on occasion.

    Despite his maddening obsession for R&D, Xenos is a surprisingly pleasant and agreeable individual. He's got no qualms regarding human interactions, and is happy to help others as long as it's not particularly detrimental to himself or his research, but his generally lacking empathy towards more mundane human struggles can make him come off as rude or uncaring.

    Ananda is a dreamer, and naive when he shouldn’t be. Even from childhood he had a very confident belief that things would work out. When faced with the worst of things he never changed, at least outwardly. In reality he would consider it a betrayal to change. He had to keep going and hoping for the best, he had to find a way to keep those around him safe and he had to stay the same while doing it. For his dearest friend who died due to his lack of forethought. He’d plan for everything he could and let his belief cover the rest.

    If there was one true point to his personality it was his boundless curiosity. His steps were led with both duty and awe. The dream he picked up may not have been his own but every step he took to fulfilling it made him want to take another. What was it that really set everyone apart? What did his friend see in the future before he went? Ananda wanted to see it through for the both of them. His own way of mourning for his longtime friend.

    "The Big Sister of Devil's Grave", Shengyu is well known amongst her peers for her lack of embellishments. Born and raised in a room with six bunks to each wall and well over twelve punks on either side of the dining table, she learned at an early age that the people who get things done are those that are loud when they need to be, and are getting shit done the rest of the time. She's not one for the bureaucracy of the Exterminator organization, instead preferring to just get her jobs done as quickly and cleanly as possible. She's awkward but nonetheless fond of the company of others and is basically unable to rest in a state of peace and quiet. She isn't the most confident of people, well aware of her lack of proper education and training as she is, but as far as she is concerned that is one thing and getting the job done is another. She doesn't need to believe in herself if she just does what she needs to anyway.

    Much of Echo's body was terribly mangled when her colony collapsed. As one its many exploited excavators, her flesh was among the first to be macerated by the breach of acidic exhaust. The remains that were fished out from beneath the rubble were stabilized, then later further pruned to accommodate the physique she operates to this day.
