The Third Usurpation

Two Thousand Club
In reading this defense of the Immaculate Philosophy, I was reminded of a direction I considered taking my campaign in, but never figured out how to make work. Maybe someone can use the idea, or suggest ways to put it in motion.

One of the things the linked post mentions is that there were really two Usurpations, and they mirror each other. The first was the usurpation of the Primordials. Prior to this:

  • The mysterious rulers: The Primordials
  • Left to run things: The gods
  • Their servants: The solars and other exalted
  • Wild cards: Raksha
During the first usurpation:

  • The usurped: The Primordials
  • The usurpers: The gods
  • The tools of the usurpers: The solars and other exalted
Afterwards:

  • The mysterious rulers: The gods
  • Left to run things: The solars and other celestial exalted
  • Their servants: The dragon-blooded
  • Wild cards: Raksha, Primordials
During the second usurpation:

  • The usurped: The solars and lunars
  • The usurpers: The sidereals
  • The tools of the usurpers: The dragonblooded
Afterwards:

  • The mysterious rulers: The sidereals
  • Left to run things: The dragonblooded
  • Their servants: Mortals
  • Wild cards: Raksha, Primordials, Gods, Solars, Lunars
See where this is going?

Suppose this cycle goes ever downward, and you base a campaign on a Third Usurpation, where:

  • The usurped: The sidereals and other dragonblooded
  • The usurpers: The dragonblooded
  • The tools of the usurpers: Mortals
And afterwards:

  • The mysterious rulers: The dragonblooded
  • Left to run things: Mortals
  • Their servants: ?? Machines? Lesser gods?
  • Wild cards: Raksha, Primordials, Gods, Celestial Exalts
Discuss.

Then there are only lots of mortals, many machines as well, and only a few awakened beings...

Welcome to the fifth age of man...

That was a pretty interesting read... What I find cool about this type of article, is that it shows that the players of Exalted aren't afraid to take their games into very different directions, and run with it. I like that.

... and on a *completely* different note:

jeesus Haku! Aren't you gonna change the incredibly-distracting-(almost)shirtless-boobs-of-what-was-her-name-again? sig....

I like the idea of that, Wordman, but I'm having difficuty in seeing how the DB's could become mysterious rulers? Having them slide to the background will be hard enough even for a group of Terrestrial's who wish to work from behind the scene.

I'm intrigued to know who will be the Tereestrial's tools?

~FC.

I infered once in my reading the setting and talking about the game, that this is supossed to be Earth before it became a sphere (not unlike Earth), which means you get a Fourth Usuerpation, where the Mortals overthrow the Dragon-Bloods and become the not so mysterious rulers of the world, everybody cool becomes the wildcards, and the knowledge of all of it slips into mythology.  Eventually the world undergoes some drastic changes, becomes Earth and eventually the World of Darkness.  Then, it becomes the New World of Darkness, and I stop caring. :)

At least, that's how I've always imagined it.

However, it could make a pretty interesting chronicle, where the players would, presumably, play Mortals who help overthrow the Sidereals?

Never!!!

Reon Kadena is cool! She's REALLY cool! and cute!

I'm sorry, did you say something Haku? I was distracted.

I've long thought about the similarities of the two 'Usurpations.' Actually, before I left FL, we had a plot going on about the interlocking methods of the two. It was essentially a great cycle (whoda thunk it?) and we were coming up for a third big one.

Sad I never got to finish it.

Eventually, in cycles like this, the degredation of power makes the next cycle impossible.  The DB lack the power to conquer heaven - how can a child rule when he's too small and weak to climb atop the throne?

...insert any George W. Bush reference you like...

That progression seems logical...as far as the DB becoming the mysterious rulers. Well if the solars couldn't get their act together and take over again. The DB would be left to fight themselves really. The families would dilute their blood lines to get more allies and eventually perhaps the db blood would be so thin that only a few would be true to their name in terms of power. Without numbers the DB would be forced to go behind the scenes. If they figured out that the sids were running things they might use their mortals to take them out and take the role.

Pretty logical.

And so the Ages wore on, fire and war swept aside another Race for another to take its place. When the cycle wore on, the Age of Reason gave way to the Age of Wonder, Wonder gave way to Despair, Despair crept into the world and the old gods broke their prison. And from Despair came the Age of Old. And the Cycle began anew.

The Dragon-Blooded Host finally realizes the need to secure the borders of Creation against the Fair Folk and embark on a crusade to the dangerous Threshold, leaving only the weakest and most political Dragon-Blooded rulers in charge of the Blessed Isle (and an elite priesthood in charge of the various Solar superweapons, to make sure no smartass in the Great Houses even THINKS about misusing them).  The truth of the Immaculate Philosophy's lies is revealed, the Patricians overthrow the Exalted in a coup, and mortals rule the island.  The DBs who are left are out waging war to keep Creation alive, while those still on the Island are desperately working to keep the mortals' collective finger off The Button.
