Fantasy The Sunless Citadel (Now Accepting)

InactiveCoffee

Inactive
The Adventure starts once at least half the roles are filled

This adventure involves a once-proud fortress that fell into the earth in an age long past. Rechristened the Sunless Citadel, its echoing, broken halls now house nefarious races and malign creatures. Evil has taken root at the citadel's core, which is deep within a subterranean garden of blighted foliage. Here a terrible tree and its dark shepherd plot in darkness.

The tree, called the Gulthias Tree, is shepherded by a twisted druid, Belak the Outcast. Belak was drawn to the buried citadel twelve years ago, following stories of oddly enchanted fruit to their source. The druid found an age-old fortress pulled below the earth by some past magically invoked devastation. With the ancient inhabitants long dispersed, vile and opportunistic creatures common to lightless dungeons infested the subterranean ruins. But at the old fortress's core, Belak the Outcast stumbled upon the Twilight Grove. He discovered at the grove's heart the Gulthias Tree, which sprouted from a wooden stake used to slay an ancient vampire.

Upon the Gulthias Tree, magical fruit extrudes forth.: A single perfect ruby-red apple ripens at the summer solstice, and a single albino apple ripens at the winter solstice. The midsummer fruit grants vigor, health, and life, while the midwinter fruit steals the same. In the years since Belak's arrival, the enchanted fruit has enjoyed wider dispersal in the surrounding lands, promoting good and ill. But the seed of either fruit, if allowed to sprout, brings forth only ill: Vaguely humanoid and evilly animated stick bundles known as twig blights eventually spring forth.

The Adventure

Our story begins in a small town by the name of Oakhurst, just around the beginning of Summer. The days are getting warmer, but the nights are still occasionally dropping close to, or below, freezing levels. The age is of Knights and Dragons.

Arriving in Oakhurst, you shall begin your journey. Either by exploring what the town offers and hearing the rumors the locals have to say, or by following the legends of the ancient Citadel without giving another thought to the town.

The Rules

Please Read ALL pertinent information before applying for a dungeoneering position!

Post types and Lengths

This RP will cross breed Casual and Detailed. Which means, I ask that you post at least 1-4 times a week. If you post more, that's lovely, if not, at least you met requirement. As for post length, I would like to see at least 2, or 4, nicely thought out paragraphs. If you write more, then you write more. If not, that's okay too.

  • We are all literate to a point. All I really care about is that you punctuate. Seriously. :D Please please please punctuate!! It helps everyone understand exactly what you are meaning in a sentence. If you just type a bunch of stuff and there are no "." or "?" or "!" Who will be able to distinguish the emotion behind what you are writing? And it will end up sounding like a bunch of jumbled ramblings. THANKS!

Quest details

Quests - These will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Changing rooms in the dungeon
  • Battling, Diplomacy, or Avoiding certain situations
  • If you remain in the dungeon, or return to town for various reasons

Character Signup Details
Your characters will be given specific information pertaining to the adventure that I, the Narrator, will determine before the start of the roleplay.

Character Images: There is no preferred imagery. Use whatever you want to use, and do not hate on others for what they want to use. If you can't deal with an anime image, then don't join. These are ONLY for character appearance use. Just because it's an anime image, does not mean this is an anime setting. Because it's not. (Not to mention, unless you use images from things like LotR or something, it'll be hard to find images of Half-orcs, Gnomes, Elves, and the like in realistic form.)

For environments, and how it affects your characters - Please dictate with common sense. Your character sees as well at night as you do when there are no lights to help other than the moon and stars. If common sense tells you that something is difficult or not possible, then your character probably can't complete the task at hand. -- Yes, this is fantasy, but there is still obstacles that hit the realm of real-world physics and the like.

Everyone should know - No godmodding, No bunnying, Respect the other Players, and No killing of players unless Original Character Owner has contacted me and wishes to remove themselves from the RP. So no random swords through company's guts. Seriously. ((Unless they are NPC characters that you find along the route through the dungeon. You can "kill" those if you wish.))

ROMANCE: Allowed. MxM, MxF, FxF... I don't care! These are your characters. Just make sure it's a mutual agreement between both parties involved that your characters have a love interest.

Era setting: Medieval - What there is: Bows and arrows, swords, armor. Tunics and Breeches (Medieval terms for shirts and pants). Cloaks (instead of jackets, hoodies, or sweaters). If you have a question about equipment, just think of this: Was it a real thing in Camelot? Or Merlin? If the answer is no, then it's not in this Dungeon.
This RP's Rules

This RP will be essentially turn-based. Everyone follows the Narrator which is me, the Game Master. Please read my posts carefully so that you may achieve the most possible knowledge about the rooms in which you find yourselves. Story progression is through the Narrator since I will be giving descriptions of all the new rooms. "Well, what if I want to return to a room I've already been to?" you might be asking. No, you do not need me to return to previous rooms visited. It's only NEW rooms that require my attention. Though I do ask if your character returns to a previously visited room, tag me so that I may track your character so as to give accurate information on any new rooms you find yourself moving into.

This RP - As long as you follow RpN's site rules, I honestly don't care how your characters act, speak, or treat others. These are diverse races, nationalities, and personalities. I want to see them flourish as Dungeoneering Adventurers. (Aka, swearing (controlled) is allowed, ect. ect. Romance (fade to black), drinking, smoking, most things considered "Mature Content" that isn't sex... all allowed. If you need to know what RpN will allow, read the site rules. You should have already...
xD )

You must all put Cupcakes in your character post. I don't care where you put it, as long as it is there! I will NOT consider any character that does not have this! Likewise, if you are accepted, your post will be liked, and I will personally private message you to inform you that you've been accepted.

Keep
ALL OOC posts IN THE OOC THREAD TAB. I will edit any and all posts I find in the In-Game thread tab and remove all OOC. I will then post your statement, and quote it in the OOC tab. Please do not give me added work. This RP is going to be big enough. Thank you.

I am the setting creator. Which is why my title is Narrator. The basic plot: Get from Start to Finish of the dungeon. How you get there, and what entails your achievements to get there is all on you as a character.

If you have times where you are unable to post, or you find yourself simply wanting to leave the RP all together,
PLEASE contact me! Tell me if you are just leaving for a little while, or leaving permanently. I will only allow 4 days of absence without notification before I will terminate your character.

Not everyone understands everything. If someone asks a question in OOC, do
NOT be mean about it. Just answer the question, and keep rolling. Don't expect everyone to know everything.

Story

Entering Oakhurst

The small town of Oakhurst lies between forested lands and distant grasslands, nestled in the comfort of nature but not shadowed by it. Near the town, along the plains opposite the forest runs a deep crevasse within which is nestled the ancient citadel that the locals call the Sunless Citadel. No one recalls it’s true name, though many have heard the rumors of magical fruit that only appears once in midsummer, and once in midwinter. Though all the stories claim that one must avoid the white apple of winter. It’s the ruby one of summer that everyone wishes to get their hands on.

It’s a conventional little town, traders and the like travelling through the town on business and using it as a decent rest stop. There is a mixture of races, though clearly the most abundant race being human.

You’ve come to this town in search of the legends. Evidence of a Dragon Cult and stories of magical fruit have drawn you to this town. Now, you must hope to find others to accompany you into this deep, dark ruin. Others, who hopefully won’t take the treasure for themselves.

What do you do now?

Choices

Go to the Tavern

Go to the General Store

Go to the Blacksmith

Why does this have to always be a drag. Those bandits tried to steal from me! From me! I the almighty Al'Duin! The dragonborn said in a very angered manner as he walked into the city of Oakhurst. His back was quite solid and his armor shone with the glimmers of the afternoon sun. He was quite tall and muscular. His appearance could be quite intimidating, but he was in secret all brawn and little brain. Where the hell can I look for some refreshments! He said angrily as he stomped the ground towards the nearest shop that stood on the streets of the town. You there! Point me the direction of the tavern or I will blaze upon your soul! He said in a provoking manner.

After a while of "negotiating", he finally knew the direction in which he had to travel. He sighed groggily. Why did he had to walk so much distances? Why couldn't be things close as in his town of origin? He sighed quite heavily as soon pyres escaped from his lizard nose. He stomped throughout the streets and alleyways, causing all the people to leave his direct path. After a short while, he stood in front of a heavy wooden door that lead into the place. The Prancing Pony? Who the hell calls a tavern the prancing pony? He groaned as he opened the doors and stood inside the place, waiting for the other mercenaries to arrive.

A human man, near six feet in height, and looking to be in his mid-fifties stood behind the bar of the Ol' Boar Inn. He was cleaning a few glasses when one of his regulars slid in behind a strange traveler. "Aye, Garon. Some randy bloke switched yer sign agin." The husky voiced human called across the length of the tavern hall. The large male grunted, "Wha' they callin' me now, ya git?" he asked in return with amusement in his voice.

"Prancin' Pony." Was the gruff response and as the bartender swore loudly, the room erupted into laughter. He turned slightly, "Campbell! Git out there and put me a proper sign up!" The old bartender bellowed to someone hidden beyond the back wall of the hall. Another man, much younger than the bartender sauntered into the room, glaring. "I'll bolt the blasted thing to the wall. I'm tired of havin' ta make new ins." The younger man grumbled, cursing as he stomped his way out of the tavern.

Garon, the bartender, turned his eyes to the newcomer. "Surray 'bout that, traveler! Welcome to the Ol' Boar Inn." He greeted warmly, a loud thump sounding as he set a tankard down on the bar. "Whut can I do fer ya?" He asked with a welcoming, yet professional, grin at the large lizard man.

Nia slowly trudges into the city of Oakhurst, her dark hair dripping sweat into her doe brown eyes. Groaning softly at the aching in her feet, she curses the day she ever decided to trust a faerie. She hardly considered a long, hot trek on foot through an overgrown forest just to find a waterfall to be an adventure. What had they even needed her for anyways. Shaking her head softly she pushes the thoughts aside, wanting nothing more than a tall glass, filled to the brim with some good hard whiskey. Scanning the street, she turns and heads for the place she thinks to be the most likely location of the local tavern.

After much wandering and incorrect guesses, she finally makes her way to the door of the tavern, chuckling at the sign above. "Well, I suppose it will do. I hope they have whiskey here", she quietly mutters to herself, reaching to push the door open and step inside. Blinking rapidly at the change of light, she doesn't notice the large figure in front of her until she walks right into their back. Her hands fly up and she takes a few steps back, wide eyes staring at the winged figure before her. "Dear me, I am ever so sorry, I did not..that is to say, The lights. Oh my my please do forgive the intrusion, hmm?" She hastily stammered out, she had seen many terrifying things before but never had she seen anything like the dragonborn.

(THe prancing pony was the inn at LOTR xD )

Al'Duin groaned as he looked up towards the innkeeper. He smiled at walked slowly, but menacing towards the bar. He lifted his hand and raised a single finger, which was covered in scales and had a sharpened nail. Give me one tankard of your strongest ale, mate. Also, I need to know more about the city. What rumors go around them folks? He asked with his grave voice. He seemed like a tower over the short people around him.

As the doors opened and a beauty arrived to the room, he groaned even louder. He had women warriors in his tribe, but he could not get to treat someone as an equal if he or she had not proven worthy in fighting against him. He frowned and shook his head as hi turned back towards the bar and the bartender. Women these days... He murmured as he took a sip of the tankard that was slid across the bar towards his hand.

Fortunately for Logan, he was able to find a young man to escort him to the Ol' Boar Inn in the town of Oakhurst. He didn't care much for drinking, but he was told that he was to meet there. After the young man did his good turn for the day by escorting the blind old man, Logan felt his way up to the door with his staff. He entered and took in the sounds of the tavern, listening to voices shout and glasses clink. He was sure that the tavern would look nice if he could see it. He decided to wait by the door and hope that he would attract attention from the right people.

Garon looked to the large dragonborn, a knowing look glinting in his eye. "Fairly much, given the Citadel." He chuckled as he addressed the question, his eyes casting over the two newcomers that had slid into his tavern. "The city here t'aint much, not what wit them nasty goblin blokes terrorizin' the Old Road." He began as he continued to keep his bar stocked with clean tankards and the barmaids busy keeping his guests' drinks full. He glanced toward the woman, and then the old blind man who had come in. He nodded toward each of them, "Quite possible yer not the on'y one come lookin' fer somethin' ta do." He noted as he dropped a few more tankards onto the bar ready to be filled if needed.

"Right, I was talkin' about th' city." He laughed heartily, and returned his attention to the dragonborn. "I also warn ye about movement once the moon rises." He continued, all serious now. His voice lowered as he glanced around, "Don't want to start no panic, but I hear there's been trouble of late. Cattleherders don't graze their stock too far afield these days. They say stories of some weird monster that maraud their herds at night." He explained, glancing around to make sure no one was eavesdropping in their talk. "No one seen these things, and our best trackers can't find no discernable trail. All we know is that cattle and even poor folk who wander out alone in the night are found the next day. Dead." He shuddered and made a sign against evil across his chest. "Pierced by dozens of what look to be needles!" he shook his head and cleared his throat before returning to his work.

One of the regulars, the human man who had told Garon about the change in the tavern's sign slid onto the barstool one space down from the dragonborn. "Theys comin' from th' old ruins. Bet my bonnet on it." he grumped, glancing to Garon, a smirk on his lips. "Yous need ta whisper better if ya don't want ta share yer secrets, Garon." he teased, chuckling at the old man. Then he addressed the dragonborn, his voice raising slightly to make sure the other folk who were from the city could hear him. "Ye best stay far from them ruins, friend. Already our best fighters been lost to those blasted evil things. Just ask Mistress Hucrele. She lost both her son and daughter to the call of the Citadel." He warned, downing what was left in his tankard and motioning to Garon for a refill. "Though, she may offer a reward if ya do decide to head in there. Mayhaps ask her the detail anyway." he laughed, shaking his head.

The bartender huffed, "Don't brush off the loss of Talgen and Sharwyn. They was our best fighters." the man retorted to his guest, filling up his tankard and motioning him off. "But he has a point, the Lady Hucrele is asking for blokes brave enough to fetch her offspring. If yer interested, she's in the market. Her family is one of this town's important merchants. She's been downright ornery since Talgen and Sharwyn went a'missin'." he sighed.

@Sombra Arcana @Sir Galahad II @Liralli

I see. Al'Duin took a stand from the bar stool to listen to the secrets. He listened carefully and nodded to the stories that were told in the citadel. His chest inflated with pride as he heard that a battle was near and the enemies were strong. That's a weird case with the cattle. He whispered. But then again, we can say the enemies are strong and that intrigues me. I want to test my skills and strength. He slightly hit his chest with his fist. I am the strongest in my tribe.

As he continued listening to the story, he heard about a juicy reward. His eyes widened up as the sound of gold made his mouth fill with saliva and drool. If he had a weakness, it was his fancy for shiny things and valuables. It was a stereotypical way to see a dragon, but Al'Duin fit perfectly in the description. Reward? About how much do you think it's about? He said with a whisper, not wanting others to hear about the money, since he wanted it all for himself.

Garon looked to the dragonborn, and his shoulders lifted in a shrug. "Mistress Hucrele don't share that tidbit but with those who serious about goin' into th' Citadel." He said with a sigh. "I fancy it's a fine coin, though. What with the danger involved." he chuckled, returning to his job of cleaning tankards and keeping drinks full.

I see. I see. Fine coin. His eyes glimmered with expectation and ambition as his gears were shifted into the direction of taking the job. He thought he would be enough to take on the adventure, but something kept him from going directly. They were his instincts who were holding him down and making him think for a long time into finding someone or a party to get the job done. He was angry he had to share the wealth but it was better to stay alive.

Hearing the words gold and reward Nia perks up and slides to the bar with a wide grin splitting her face. "Mmm barkeep, a double whiskey please. Now then did I hear something about a reward?", she purrs softly, cutting her eyes to the dragonborn. "You know, old ruins tend to be filled with dangerous traps and I just happen to know someone quite good at dealing with such things, hmm?" She leans her hip against the bar and taps her index finger against her lips softly, making a show of thinking deeply. "You know I'd be willing to lend a hand and since you seem like such a nice guy, I'd only ask for a quarter of the profits, that's a steal compared to my usual rate of half." Her grin turns into a self satisfied smirk, her hands sliding into her pockets as she waits for his response.

A quarter of the reward and a traps expert. Al'Duin was deep in thought as he moved his really tough hands onto his draconic chin and rubbed it for a while. He was a berserker, a kind of tank profession that didn't take much damage from strikes, but traps could mean the death to him. He wasn't sure if the combat prowess of her was close to his, but if numbers surrounded him, he might not come alive from there. It was a gamble, but the price wasn't costly. I accept. He buffed out
