The Sundering
Once every 3 years begins The Sundering. This is the day Daemons can be summoned into the world during a 33 day long period requiring very little from those that desire to summon the Daemon folk. This is also when the Daemons are at their strongest. The reason why there are a handful of great civilizations named is because these are the only ones that can survive a Sundering and bear very little in terms of substantial damage. Many great empires are created and eventually fall to the sundering.
After the sundering Daemons are severely weakened losing all their powers usually and are nothing more than massive beasts. The veil of reality and immaterium is such that many daemons breed with local animals and have offspring creating many of the monsters seen today.
Plot
During the end of a Sundering you find youself in this world where the greatest technological feat is a steam engine. The world is open to you. Help those less fortunate survive the next Sundering with your brave new ideas, medical knowledge or leadership. Usher in a new golden age by becoming a paragon of virtue and hope adventuring to end the source of the Sunderings. Or will you be selfish and rule the criminal underground with an iron fist.
Setting
A bit more steampunk. You don't have to play as a traveler stuck in a new world but can instead play as a person in the world to begin with which will give you additional stats (TBD). A bit D&D-esque. Guns exist but swords and other melee weapons are the primary weapons as they seem to have more effects on Daemons. Magic rules supreme with mages dotting the landscape and holding back the tide of Daemons.
Gameplay
It's more of a sandbox. I'll give quests or objectives to keep things going. I'll act as the nature setting your foes before you.
If you decide that you have a goal and what needs to be done I'll let it play out including killing party members, controlling empires or being heroes trying to end the Sundering.
Magic
Magic takes the users energy away from them as if they did it through mundane ways. Eg. Moving a rock will take away how much energy it would take to walk over and move it yourself. Magic can be stored into artifacts that must be magically created. The stronger a mage you are it takes less energy kinda like working out for awhile then doing a simple push up. It takes a lot less out of you.
