THE EVENT

Welcome to the annual masquerade ball of Larkfield! As always, the masquerade ball will be held at the mansion and it officially starts at 6 PM so be sure to arrive on time! Since this is a masquerade ball, masquerade masks are required! Once you arrive at the mansion, you can enter and go towards the ballroom where you can hopefully find a dance partner. Or, you can make your way to the kitchen area for refreshments such as cookies, fruit slices, drinks, and more! Need a little break from dancing? You can go outside to get some fresh air or head to the kitchen! As always, spirit animals are welcome here and we hope you’ll enjoy your time here at the ball!

  Tonight’s the night! Tonight is the night of the masquerade ball that was held every year at the mansion and it’s one of the many elegant, fancy occasions that would take place at the mansion too. And honestly, Otto was pretty excited for it! Well, maybe excited would be the biggest understatement of the year. Otto was hyped for the masquerade ball. He already had his outfit and masquerade mask picked out. Otto had gone to work at the Bean There Cafè as usual with him being a barista there, and he was pretty anxious to get home and start getting ready.
  
  See, Otto is not a fan of being outside at night and tonight is no exception. He wanted to start getting ready for the ball early just to avoid having to start walking there by the time the sun was starting to set. Otto did not know how to drive, and he didn’t have a bicycle or anything, so he always walked to where he needed to go.
  
  By now, Otto had gotten off of work and was currently getting ready for the masquerade ball. He had even made a flower crown and flower collar for Charlotte to wear at the ball as well. Tonight is going to be a good night! Otto wondered who he would interact with at the ball. Maybe he’ll hang around in the ball room for a while before going to the kitchen to indulge in some sweets.
  
  Like Otto, Charlotte was hyped up for the masquerade ball as well. She was planning on hanging out with some of her fellow spirit animals. Maybe she and Otto will be one of the first ones there since they were planning on going early! She already had her flower crown and collar on, and she was leaping around in circles. “Lottie, calm down, we’ll be leaving for the mansion soon.” Otto spoke when he noticed how bouncy and hyper the otter was. The river otter momentarily stopped, “But am excited for the ball!” She spoke enthusiastically before continuing, “am just full o’ energy!” Charlotte continued to speak with enthusiasm.
  
  Otto was used to Charlotte’s hyperactivity by now. In fact, he himself was hyper and he rambled a lot and needed something to keep him occupied. Okay, he should focus on finishing up with getting ready so that Lottie would calm down. Once he was finished getting ready, he started to look for the mask he had picked out.
  
  Otto picked up the mask he had for the ball, and he looked at it. How was he going to wear his mask over his glasses? Or would he put the mask on and put it glasses over it? Otto will have to decide before he gets to the mansion.
  
  As much as Otto was hyped for the masquerade ball tonight, he wasn’t going to be putting on his mask until he got to the mansion. To him, it just felt really awkward to be wearing a masquerade mask out in public. So, for now, he was just going to be holding onto his mask until it was time to put it on. He turned his head to look at Charlotte before speaking, “Alright come on Lottie, we have to get there before it starts to get dark.” He spoke to the otter. Charlotte climbed up Otto’s arm before settling herself on his shoulders and she made herself comfortable.
  
  Alright, now they’re ready to head off!
  
  Otto eagerly went down the stairs, ready to hop over to the front door to get a move on and get to the mansion. Charlotte had settled down now, but Otto knew she would be her energetic, hyperactive self once they got to the mansion. Otto opened the front door, and he stepped out into the cool, breezy air before briefly turning to close the door and make sure it was locked.

  The young woman was seated on the ground in front of the mirror in her bedroom, staring at her reflection as if anything would change by simply staring at herself. It would not change a thing; it would merely delay the mental breakdown that she often had when getting ready for these kinds of things. There was an audible groan as both her hands moved through her hair.
  “Why am I like this?” She sighed as she let herself fall back, ending with her back against her bed while her legs stretched out towards the mirror.
  “Because you are quite the perfectionist? Or because you have become so used to 5-year-olds? Or maybe it’s-“
  “Mouse, for the love of all that it Holy. Shut up. It was a rhetorical question, not one that you were supposed to answer.’’
  If Mouse did not often look annoyed Dunyah would probably have cared about the look that the black and white snake cast towards her, but it didn’t bother her whatsoever. Towards strangers Mouse might snap her jaw, but she did not do that when she got annoyed with Dunyah. She simply cast an annoyed look and curled up into a ball.
  “Thank you, I dearly appreciate it,’’ Dunyah spoke with a hint of sarcasm.
  Another sigh followed when she pushed herself straight again, folding her legs underneath her while her eyes found her reflection again. She genuinely had no idea what to do about her appearance at this point, but she had to figure it out sooner or later. From where she was sitting, she could see the reflection of her alarm, which was already showing 5:00 p.m..
  
  Thirty minutes later Dunyah was leaning closer to the mirror, her mouth slightly open as she applied mascara to her lashes. In the end she decided to do something simple.
  “You gave up on thinking of an interesting look, didn’t you?” Mouse’s voice sounded amused.
  “It’s hidden behind a mask anyway, who cares?”
  “You did.”
  Dunyah narrowed her eyes as she glanced at Mouse, who was still laying on her bed, but this time her eyes were looking at the woman in front of the mirror. “You are so happy with yourself right now, it’s not a good look.’’
  “Everything is a good look on me.”
  It drew a genuine laugh from Dunyah as she shook her head. “You’re so full of yourself.”
  
  It was around 5:50 when Dunyah parked her small car on the side of the road. She had contemplated if she should have walked to the mansion but decided against it when Mouse reminded her of the heels she was wearing. With a small sigh she folded the small mirror down and looked at the reflection of her face. There was nothing to fix, but she still made sure she had secured her headscarf right, which caused some annoyance within Mouse who had wrapped her body around the young woman’s neck, resting her head on her shoulder.
  “You know I keep it in place as well, right? Just get out of the car and go in, you’re already late,’’ the snake complained.
  With a sigh Dunyah folded the mirror back and took a deep breath. When was the last time she’d been to some kind of party anyway? Maybe it had been her sister’s wedding? Or maybe a cousin that got married after that? She genuinely didn’t remember when the last time had been.
  “At least nobody will be asking you when you’re getting married this time,” Mouse spoke as if she had been able to read her thoughts. In reality Mouse knew exactly what caused Dunyah’s anxiety.
  “Fair enough,’’ Dunyah managed to mutter with just the smallest chuckle, still filled with anxiety.
  Her hand reached for the handle, and not even two minutes later she was actually out of her car, locking it behind her as she walked to the sidewalk. The cold air brushed against her skin and Dunyah took a moment to draw in a deep breath, one that filled her lungs with the cold air and calmed her nerves down just a little bit. Just like that she was on her way to the mansion, securing the mask to her face as she was walking.
  
  The mask somehow helped reduce the stress that grew within her, it caused her to be able to look around her without having the feeling that people instantly saw her looking around. Seeing the crowd grow bigger the closer she got to the mansion. Mouse must have felt her anxiety grow again as she nudged her face closer to Dunyah’s cheek.
  “Not breathing will result in fainting, you are aware, no?”It pulled a soft laugh from Dunyah’s lips. “I will take it as a yes.”
  “Yes, Mouse. I am aware,’’ she answered with the faintest chuckle still clear in her voice.
  The joke helped, as she suddenly stood in the mansion amongst other people. The room filled with people in suits and gowns, everyone’s faces hidden behind masks of all sorts. She slowly moved along the wall of the room, almost hiding away to the side for the moment as she was simply watching the room.

  There was excitement glittering in her eyes as her fingers moved through her jewelry box, trying to find the prettiest pieces she had. Her excitement had been so grand she had been spending the last hour getting ready. Her hair was neatly curled, her make-up had taken all of her concentration, and now she was simply trying to complete her outfit. From the corner of her eye, she could see Lazare trying to get her attention and when she moved to look at him, she tilted her head to the side to watch his signs.
  “Are they stolen pieces, or bought pieces?” A grin stood on his face, and Persephone shook her head with a chuckle.
  “Not everything I own is stolen, I have more than enough pieces that are bought.” Her fingers moved quickly as she responded to the question, but it clearly caused Lazare to laugh in response, even though she could not hear it, it looked like a decent laugh.
  “You did not answer my question.”
  “It doesn’t matter.”
  Lazare seemed to give up at that point and Persephone simply continued to look at all her pieces of jewelry. Her fingers had picked up a few necklaces that fit together, some earrings that fit together as well. For a moment she twirled and watched her dress move, softly chuckling to herself as a smile formed on her face.
  “Does this look good?” She asked Lazare while turning towards him.
  “It looks great, you’re ready to go?”
  “Yep! It’s quite a walk there, so let’s go!”
  It almost looked like a look of relief washed over Lazare’s face, but Persephone ignored it. She put a lot of effort in looking like she wanted to look, especially on a night like this. Besides, she was excited to go to a ball, and she wasn’t going to let him dampen her excitement.
  
  There was such a clear spring in her step that Lazare wondered how she ever went unnoticed enough to swipe things from people’s pockets. He had seen her swipe things – and never said anything about it – and seeing the two completely different kinds of attitudes within one person was almost confusing. Like he was watching two completely different people in general. He followed her closely, but eventually hopped onto her shoulder, holding on to her which did result in him being unable to sign to her, so they just traveled in silence
  Not once while walking did Persephone stop having the little spring in her step, it was a constant hopping motion in a way. It caused the curls of her hair to jump with every step as well. Lazare slowly moved to hold on to her shoulder with his tail and back feet, causing Persephone to look at him from behind her mask.
  “You are walking like a boat in a storm, why are you so excited about this?”
  “It’s a lot of people together, and I’m long overdue for something exciting around here for once.”
  
  As soon as they got to the mansion Lazare saw it, and for the first time in a long time he wondered if he should say something about it. Without a word the excited Persephone bumped into someone who seemed to leave the mansion to talk to someone, and his eyes followed Persephone’s fingers as they slid something that looked like money into her sleeve as she hastily signed a ‘sorry’ towards the woman. Lazare shook his head with a deep sigh.
  “Don’t suddenly turn into someone who cares, Lazare. You cannot act like that wasn’t bound to happen.”
  “I don’t care that you’re doing it, but it’s only been five seconds, can you at least try not to get thrown out within the first twenty minutes?”

  If there was anyone that didn’t want to go to this ball it would be Akira. The only reason he decided to go was because Ruben had convinced him to join him, and right now that seemed to be the one weak spot he had: keeping his friend happy. With a sigh he pulled his suit straight, his hands moved over the black fabric while pressing his lips together.
  “If you’re going to look this mad, you’re never going to know happiness, Akira,’’ Dori’s voice sounded, as happy as always.
  “Be happy I’m even going, I could have told Ruben I won’t join him.”
  “You wouldn’t do that, you value friendship too much.’’
  “I do not.”
  Dori started laughing as he tilted his head to the side, eyeing Akira from where he was sitting. “You value your friendship, so you’d rather be out of your comfort zone than admit that you have a hard time leaving your house. It’s a good thing!”
  Akira was sure there was a shimmer of enjoyment in the bird’s eye, and he moved his gaze away from Dori to keep himself from chuckling to himself. He was right. Akira valued his friendship with Ruben, and he was happy to have someone around him that managed to pull him out of his house now and then. Besides, he enjoyed taunting the guy just as much. It made his days a little less dull.
  “You are smiling,” Dori taunted in a happy tune, almost singing in a way. “So you know I’m right, he’s a good friend.”
  Right at that moment Akira threw the first thing he could find towards Dori, who quickly ducked and avoided the thing that flew through the air.
  “That was unnecessary!”
  “You were annoying me.”
  “I was stating facts, you could have killed me!”
  “Don’t be dramatic, it was just a pencil.”
  “Stab wound!”
  “I can throw more.”
  A silence followed after that, and Akira let out a satisfied sigh.
  “Akira has a friend, Akira has a friend, Akira has a friend!” The bird was hopping, excitedly yelling the words like he was in some kind of march.
  “I’m done,’’ Akira groaned as he put on his headphones, turning the music up loudly in order to drown the voice out.
  
  Although he considered himself quite a good liar, towards himself that was, he wouldn’t be able to hide hid nervousness about this evening. He had been quite young when he figured out that social gatherings were not quite his thing, and that had often kept him from making friends. He wasn’t even quite sure how he managed to become friends with Ruben at this point, he just knew he liked the guy, and before he knew it, he had agreed to shopping for a suit as well as going to this masked ball thing. He even took the time to find a decent mask.
  “Did I annoy you too much?” Dori was asking it carefully this time, a little less of a spring in his voice.
  Akira let out a deep breath, but soon shook his head while rubbing the back of his neck. “No, I’m just nervous. That’s my fault,’’ he admitted in a bit of a softer voice.
  “But it’s going to be fun, Akira. You’ll enjoy yourself, I’m sure!”
  “How are you so sure?”
  “I just am!” Dori excitedly hopped onto Akira’s shoulder, shaking his feathers as he did so.
  At this point Akira was the complete opposite from Dori. He wasn’t incapable of fun, or jokes, or laughter or… well, anything fun basically. He was just a little bit more serious most of the time.
  The man now glanced at the clock on the wall, it was still early so there was no rush to get to the mansion. “Fine, tell me. How should I go about this thing then?”

Arla's heart buzzed with excitement and nerves at the idea of attending her first ball and first major event in Larkfield. The idea of meeting new people was both an overwhelming but also such an interesting prospect. Having only recently moved into the town, and also being somewhat of a shyer nature, Arla hadn't met many people, she looked forward to this event being the time she could potentially make some new friends. The idea of having some friends was something Arla really thought would be so refreshing and would be a great addition to her new life in Larkfield.

"Are you sure this is a good idea?...What if we get sick being around so many people...." The small white rat, dusted with a silvery markings across it's top, rested against the doorframe of the closed bathroom door and listening with his oversized dumbo ears. "I don't think we should go, it's much safer at home." The rat expressed. Polo was the spirit animal of Arla and he was also her anxiety. He worried about everything, however the worry of himself or Arla getting sick from such an event was a very realistic concern to have. Arla had a poor immune system and multiple long term health problems which had plagued her life, they were problems that were never going to ever be resolved.

"I want to do this, I think it will be fun." Arla responded from behind the bathroom door, she had a sweet voice with a slightly British accent. "Anyway, part of the reason for coming to Larkfield was because I don't want to spend the rest of my life hiding." The door handle clicked and slowly the door began to open. Standing in the doorway was a young and slender woman with very pale skin and beautiful long and wavy light brown hair with blonde highlights.

Dressed in a long, light blue gown dress. The dress boasted elegancy with a beautifully glittering decorated bust piece and a long flowing mesh bottom. Her outfit was complete with a pair of light blue, matching, heels and a matching mask. Considering the ball was a Masquerade Ball, a mask was a must and Arla had additionally put thought into that. Her mask covered only her eyes and faded across from light blue to silver. Decorated with a glittery pattern of spirals and topped off with a beautiful white and blue lily, and a pair of long blue feathers.
She felt amazing.

"Woah!" Polo expressed as he bounded backwards to get a better view of Arla. The rat had been by his humans side from the day she was born, however he had never seen her dress in such a way and even he was taken back by what he was seeing. Arla knelt down and gently rubbed the rats cheeks as he embraced her affection. "I think you shouldn't worry so much today and try to have a nice time. It's going to be okay." Arla reassured him before moving off to admire herself in the mirror.


"I feel like a princess!" Arla remarked joyfully to Polo as she merrily made her way up the steps towards the ball entrance. Hopping along behind and running to keep up pace as always, Polo the rat remained cautious but in addition he would follow and support Arla with whatever she was to choose. Just as Arla crossed the fresh hold and the room of people opened up before her, she felt the butterflies inside of her belly dance. Her sheltered life had left Arla shy and with a slight amount of social anxiety.

Picking up on her nerves, Polo stopped next to her and stood up on his back feet. "It's not to late to turn around you know?" Polo confessed. Arla looked down at him as he sparked a bit more determination from her. "I still want to do this." She said with her smile growing once more. "Okay..." Polo responded, despite the lack of enthusiasm, his voice sounded supportive and open to the opportunity.

Without taking a breath, Arla slowly made her entrance into the ballroom, followed by Polo who trotted along at a steady pace only a foot behind Arla's feet. Both were determined to have an enjoyable, and successful, evening at Larkfield Masquerade Ball.

  For Ophelia, she enjoyed the Masquerade Ball. It was a great way to have fun and relax, and not to mention the free refreshments the ball offered. She had spent most of today at the library as usual, shelving books and checking out books for people, that sort of stuff. To be honest, it was pretty relaxed and she was anticipating the start of the ball. And as always, Koda was by her side at the library, he’s usually found snoozing on the floor while Ophelia works.
  
  Ophelia stayed at the library until it was time to close the library up, well she stayed back up for a little bit to finish up shelving some books that had been returned to the library that day. Once Ophelia was done, she turned towards Koda, “Time to leave Koda. We have to go home and start getting ready for the ball.” Ophelia told the grizzly bear who was just starting to wake up from a nap. The bear yawned and began to stand up onto his paws. “Is it almost evening already?” Koda inquired. There was a small nod in response from Ophelia.
  
  Ophelia and Koda left the library after locking up. Ophelia lived in a cabin in the woods, so it was best to head straight home if they wanted to go ahead and get ready for the ball in order to be on time.

  “Come on Koda, let’s get you dressed up for the ball.” Ophelia said with a small laugh as she began to dress Koda up for the masquerade ball. A black top hat and a matching black bow tie with a white collar. Speaking of getting ready, it was about time that she should start getting ready herself. Ophelia didn’t want to be late after all and she lived in her cabin in the woods, so it was quite a walk to the mansion. When she was done dressing Koda up for the ball, Ophelia left to get ready.
  
  She had her dress and masquerade mask laying on the bed and the shoes she picked out were in front of the bed. With that, Ophelia began to get ready, saving the masquerade mask for last since she had to do her hair and makeup first before putting that on. She was meticulously and carefully doing her hair, braiding it up before putting little flowers in the braids as well.
  
  Once she was done with her hair and makeup, Ophelia put her masquerade mask on and exited the bedroom, ready to head off to the ball. “Come on Koda, we don’t want to be late.” Ophelia piped up, expecting the grizzly bear to be waiting for her at the front door of the cabin. And sure enough, there he was at the door. “Is there going to be fish there?” Koda inquired eagerly as he stood up on his paws when Ophelia approached the door.
  
  Ophelia thought about it for a moment, wondering what kind of food and drinks the ball was going to have. Surely, they’ll have food for the animals to eat, they always did, and this year should be no different. “I suppose so. I’m sure there will be plenty of fish and other kinds of food for you to eat.” Ophelia assured as she opened the door.
  
  Ophelia never complained about the walk from the woods into town, it was always a lovely walk since she loved nature and taking long walks in the woods was a hobby of hers. She stepped out of her cabin with Koda, going down the porch steps.
  
  And the two of them began to walk their way through the woods and to the town.
  
  After a bit of walking along the sidewalk, the mansion was starting to come into view for the two of them. And they seemed to be on time too! What a relief.
  
  “We’re here!” Ophelia grinned when they finally arrived at the mansion and she stepped inside, wondering if she should go to the ballroom or kitchen first. After a bit of thought, Ophelia decided to head to the ballroom first, maybe she could find a dance partner or someone to talk to before she decided to head to the kitchen for something to eat and drink.
  
  While Ophelia was heading for the ballroom, Koda was starting to make his way to the kitchen. He was ready to see what kind of food was going to be on the table.

Sitting in his black car in the parking lot outside of the entrance to Larkfield Masquerade Ball, Dimitri made last moment adjustments to his suit in the small car mirror. Dressing for a suit and tie event was not a common occurrence for Dimitri, and getting it right seemed important to him, he did want to show he made a good effort. The effort had paid off, he looked smart. Dressed in a refined black suit with a neat black waistcoat, he looked well turned out. Considering it was a Mascaraed Ball, Dimitri has opted for a mask which seemed fitting for his personality, almost in a subconscious way. A mask that only took up half of his face, a black mask with defined white swirls and broken up by the crinkled effect of a broken skull, tipped off with the addition of music notes in his line of sight.
Dimitri had wanted to make an impression.

"You look fine, stop admiring yourself like your some celebrity or something, not like anyone is going to notice if your collar isn't perfectly straight." Sitting beside him in the passenger seat was a large black and tan dog. Almost appearing as owner and dog, however their bond was far more closer than any pet owner relationship could ever be. Darwin was the spirit animal of Dimitri, the pair was joined at the hip however didn't always see eye to eye. That being said, the pair had an understanding that these misunderstandings were purely a disagreement which stemmed from the emotions the paired in their unique soul connection.

"Aww...you sound jealous!" Dimitri replied as he turned to face the dark faced Malinois, a type of Belgian Shepherd, sat next to him. The dog scoffed, returning his gaze to study the people walking past their car. Before Darwin was able to stop him, Dimitri had reached into the glove compartment of his car and pulled out a bowtie which matched the same black and white swirl portion of his mask, then wrapped it around Darwin's neck.

Darwin reacted quickly with a grown, it was more bark than bite.
"Hay! I'm not some handbag Chihuahua you can dress up and prance around with!" Darwin snapped, which only made Dimitri grin with amusement.
"Exactly! Your not, which is why it makes sense." Dimitri replied. Darwin gave him a disgruntled sideway glance, unamused but willing to entertain the idea. "Now we match and everyone will know you are a part of me."
The dog looked around, his amber eyes meeting the brown eyes of his human spirit companion. They didn't need to speak as the pair embraced in their moment of understanding and connectivity between them. Not always did they seem to get along, but they did understand each-other better than many would assume from the outside.


The pair both exited the car via the drivers door and made their way up towards the ball. Darwin walked neatly at Dimitri's heel, however the space between them suggested equality and not leadership. Making their way into the ballroom, Dimitri made a beeline towards the bar to get a drink. It wasn't a celebration without alcohol and tonight he was going to have a good night out. As Dimitri ordered himself his first drink of the evening, Darwin sat with his back to Dimitri and his eyes scanned the room.

Darwin prided himself in being a good watchdog, he never missed a thing of a person, which was beneficial for Dimitri who wouldn't even notice an elephant in the room by himself. As he watched, Darwin noticed a large Bear heading for the kitchen. His ears perked foreword and he began to pant slightly.
"I'm just going to go check something out, I will be right back!" Darwin informed Dimitri and before he could turn around to say anything, Darwin starting to make his way towards the kitchen to see what mischief the Bear could possibly be getting into.

Darwin didn't trust many others and seeing another Spirit Animal going into the kitchen alone concerned him. Wanting to police the situation, Darwin quietly snuck after Koda into the kitchen and stopped boldly after the fresh hold.
"What are doing?" Darwin asked, his tone sounded firm, despite that being a normal ring to his voice.

Terry Holt and Thomas

Terry stared at the mansion before him, steeling his nerves as he breathed in the cool air of the spring that was somewhat late to turn properly warm. He had never really been to a social event like this before; usually, he liked something a little more low-key, but he had been presented an invitation by a particularly vivacious customer, who was all aflutter over the extravagance of the idea. He had tacked up a reminder of it on the note board of the building he worked in, and made a diligent effort to make himself presentable for the event; he had rented a suit, plain black and accented with a green tie, his mask something he stitched together after careful planning. He adjusted it a bit; the dark green mask with it's fringes meant to look like pine needles was comfortable, but he was particularly fussy. He could have worn a couple of his nicer bracelets, but he decided to forego such a thing to seem more in line with the festivities.

"Remind me again why we bothered to come?" Thomas grumbled by his feet, his small beady eyes surveying the locale with distaste, his spines rippling slightly as he bristled and relaxed all at once. "Because, it'll be fun." Terry reminded him, flashing him a quick smile; the porcupine caught a glimpse of it and rolled his eyes, shuffling on the hard surface of the stairs. "Good food, good drink, what's not to love?" Terry asked, picking him up with little effort. Thomas' quills seemed to be a burden, something to be careful of, but Terry had never gotten poked by them once, even if he deliberately pressed on them. He was thankful; if he had been able to be poked, he would have spent a lot more of his childhood in tears and perhaps he and Thomas wouldn't have grown as close as they had.

"I'll tell you what's not to love- strangers attempting conversation." Thomas retorted, although he stayed dutifully relaxed in Terry's arms as Terry carried him into the mansion. The place was wonderful, all glitter and elegance, reflected light and polished stone. "Yeah, but we'd run into those anytime, anywhere. Do you want to wear this?" Terry asked, raising his eyebrows behind his mask at Thomas, who seemed to relax more in protest. "No." He replied resignedly, and Terry sighed as he held him closer, reassuring him with a squeeze. Maybe some food would cheer him up enough to tolerate the event; Terry began to wander towards where food might be, offering polite smiles to the people he walked by.

Holden Reeves and Sonar

Holden was all abuzz for this event? A ball? In this town? With little time to spare? He loved the excitement of getting ready in a hurry! He had picked out one of his favorite suits: pinstriped with silver cufflinks, a deep purple tie to add just a hint of color to his ensemble. Sonar drifted around him as he was getting ready; he saw her huge, magnificent eye hovering behind him as he adjusted his mask to make sure it was on correctly. "You look beautiful, darling." She said, her voice sweet and gentle as she reached over with one of her arms and picked his overcoat into place with careful touches of her hooks. "I know, I just want to make a good first impression." He said, moving with her adjustment to put a bit of cologne on his wrists and neck before he turned and smiled at her. "Oh, very handsome." She complemented, and his grin only grew as color rippled through her skin, striping her usually bright red coloration with waves of blue. "Time to go." Holden said with a thrill of excitement, getting all of his things ready to head to the mansion.

Holden arrived a tad late; he didn't mind, though. That just meant most people would already be there, and he could ask a stranger or two for a dance, have some good food, and have a good time. Shouldering a sleek, black bag, he made his way to the dance hall to weave his way through the throngs of people, drinking in the sights and smells of everyone in their best attire, loving the choice of music as he hunted for a dance partner.

  Standing so close to the first wall she’d laid her eyes on felt stupid, especially when she’d normally be so confident in the way she acted. But – to be fair – that was only when she stood in front of toddlers, other times she often enjoyed the peace and quiet of writing. Maybe that was just part of being a teacher throughout the week, having so many small children around you could definitely be energy draining. Her eyes followed many people that came through the door: most of them moving to the kitchen to get a drink or something to eat.
  “You should get something to drink and eat as well, I remember you saying you’d eat here,” Mouse’s voice was soft, but it was enough to pull Dunyah from her thoughts.
  “Hm? Oh, right. You’re right.’’
  She hadn’t eaten dinner yet, and she had been planning on eating some of the food that they had prepared here.
  “Dunyah, please. I am hungry too, you know?” The snake started to complain when the woman didn’t seem to move from her place. It pulled a little bit of a laugh from her.
  “I doubt they have mice laying around for you to eat, Mouse. Would you settle for anything else?”
  “I would, because I’m not held back by the same eating rules you’ve set for yourself,’’ Mouse answered fiercely.
  “I didn’t set them for myself. You’re rather mean when you’re trying to prove a point.”
  “I’m mean even when I don’t want to make a point, Habibi.”
  Dunyah now rolled her eyes, but there was still a little bit of a chuckle that left her lips. Mouse wasn’t a threat; she was just very… opinionated in a way. But still, to keep her from complaining even more, the young woman started to head for the kitchen.
  
  The kitchen was filled with foods and what not, and Dunyah had to admit that she was in awe of the variety of things they’d managed to put on a table. Mouse was the first to move, but Dunyah quickly held her back.
  “Do not dare, we don’t need a snake to move through the food. You tell me what you want, and I’ll plate some for you.”
  Mouse wasn’t fond of Dunyah’s words, but she didn’t say it out loud. The way her eyes were angrily staring at her human was a fine indicator of her annoyance. She wrapped herself back around the woman’s neck and watched the table, eyeing everything. While Dunyah was plating her own food, which was mostly fruits and some of the vegetarian options they had, she kept a close eye on her familiar.
  “Tell me, what do you want, Mouse?” She asked after a while of quiet.
  “You can plate some fish and meat. Please.”
  The woman quietly nodded while taking a smaller plate which she filled for Mouse. It was going to be a struggle to hold two plates, but she would be fine walking to a table. She laid down the tongs and took the two plates as she headed out to the seating area. Mouse, however, wasn’t that patient as she was already making her way down Dunyah’s arm towards the plate that was filled with fish and meat.
  “Mouse, can you wait? I cannot hold your weight like this. You’re going to make a me-“
  By then it already happened. The weight of Mouse together with the plate that her hand held was already too much to handle and before she knew it the plate fell to the ground, shattering as soon as the plate hit the tiles.
  “Mouse! Limadha faealt hadha? Kan yajib ‘an tatahalaa bialsabr, allaenat ealayk!”
  Suddenly there was nothing left of the very confident, calm snake. Mouse started to quickly slither back up the woman’s arm, wrapping herself around Dunyah’s neck again. Dunyah did not bother to apologize for her yelling, not when there was a mess of food and pieces of plate on the ground.
  
  It took her a moment of just staring at the mess to calm herself down, and eventually she put her own plate down onto a table. She got down to clean up the mess, finding herself seeing a pair of feet. As soon as she looked up from the mess, she saw someone holding a porcupine.
  “Sorry, I’ll move out of the way.’’ She chuckled a little bit embarrassed.
  She quickly moved to the side, out of the way, so she could properly throw away the pieces of plate together with the food.
  “Can you still-“ Mouse started, but Dunyah shook her head instantly.

  As soon as the duo entered the mansion a smile formed around Persephone’s lips which caused Lazare to shake his head lightly.
  “I do not understand how you get this excited about this thing.”
  Now it was Persephone’s moment to shake her head, looking at the lemur on her shoulder.
  “I just really like social events, sue me.”
  She could feel something of a bass in the floor and she smiled lightly, enjoying the feeling of so many people around her. Her eyes calmly moved around, looking at everyone that walked around. Her eyes caught on to someone who looked quite confident, walking with a Malinois next to him. Lazare quickly caught on to what she was looking at and shook his head while looking at Persephone.
  “Don’t even think about it, let’s get a drink or something.”
  “Why? I want to meet people.”
  “You can meet people, just… I hear things around here, I’m telling you: Don’t.”
  Persephone let out a soft sigh, but she obliged to Lazare’s warning, giving the Lemur a small nod after which she headed into the kitchen. When Lazare heard things around the place, Persephone never really doubted his words. There was no reason to do so.
  
  Still, Persephone wouldn’t be Persephone if she didn’t just ignore Lazare a tiny bit. So, when she walked to the bar to get herself a drink her eyes moved to the drink that the man next to her was having. She calmly moved her hands towards the person behind the bar and Lazare rolled his eyes.
  “She says she’d like the same drink he’s having,’’ Lazare explained. Of course, she had to do it her way, why did he even try to get her to listen to him? The grin on Persephone’s face indicated that she knew exactly what was bothering the Lemur. She calmly took the glass when the person behind the bar finished her drink.

  If there was any kind of Holy creature up in the sky Akira was thanking it with all his being for the fact that Dori was not able to shut his beak. The macaw was sharing a whole plan for the evening, one that was filled with social activities and how to deal with them. In the meantime, Akira walked downstairs, reaching his arms as he tied a bun into the upper part of his hair. The clock was calmly ticking away while Akira made himself a tea, wrapping both of his hands around the hot mug as he leaned against the kitchen counter.
  “You are not listening!” Dori’s voice was loud and sudden, causing Akira to almost jump out of shock. “You are trying to stall!”
  “I am not!” But Akira’s voice didn’t sound one bit convincing. In all honesty, that was exactly what he was doing. He was nervous, and he hated these kinds of things. Why did he even allow himself to get dragged into all of this? “Chikushō!” Akira exclaimed in pain when Dori dug his beak into his shoulder.
  “You,” another dab of his beak, “were,” another, “using me!” And at that point Akira took Dori’s beak in his hand.
  “Stop it, my arm is going numb if you keep doing this. I can’t help it that you don’t know when to stop talking.”
  Dori’s eyes widened, and he shook all of his feathers after which he almost seemed to pull his head back into his feathers. Great, now he felt bad. The silence felt thick, only the sound of the radio was there, and Akira found himself tapping his fingers against the mug in his hands.
  “I’m sorry,’’ he managed to force from his lips. “I knew what I was doing, and you are right, I shouldn’t have done that.” He softly blew into his mug, trying to get the heat down a little bit more. “I’m just nervous, it’s too much. You were talking, and I took the opportunity.”
  “I am always talking according to you,’’ Dori muttered with a somewhat annoyed voice.
  “That’s not what I said… I said you are unable to stop talking, that’s something different.”
  “You put it in the same context, I know what you meant.”
  “I put it in the wrong context, Dori. I was wrong for doing so.”
  There was a slow change in the bird as he moved his head from his feathers, tilting his head slowly. Another sigh followed as Akira reached her hand, rubbing the bird’s head.
  “As I said… I am sorry. Should not have done what I did.”
  “So… we’re leaving then?”
  The annoyed voice had turned into an amused one and Akira was struggling to comprehend the change in demeanor. He was clearly easy to cheer up, but it did confuse him quite a bit.
  “Yes. We are leaving.”
  
  It was the moment Akira was dreading most, and he had really tried to push it forward as much as he possibly could. Was he really that nervous that he was willing to not go? Even though he promised Dori to go? He wasn’t sure, but he surely did find his nervousness overwhelming. Either way, he was walking down the dirt road that lead him out of his house, and into town. While Akira was working on his mask, Dori moved to the front, his beak unbuttoning the first button of his shirt.
  “What are you doing?”
  “Making you look like you’re not the most nervous person ever.”
  The man let out something between a groan and sigh, but he didn’t move to button it back up. Why would he? Dori would unbutton it again.
  It was around 6:20 when he arrived, which was late in Dori’s eyes, but not late enough in Akira’s eyes. His fingers were nervously fidgeting with the buttons on his cuffs, until there was a painful stab in his hand.
  “Dori!” He whispered in an angry tone, causing the bird to flinch. “Why would you do that?”
  “Because you’re making me nervous at this point, and I don’t get nervous.”
  That… was true. Dori was the excitement and happiness itself, at this point Akira was sure that he was simply the sunshine itself.
  “Where are we headed, shouldn’t we wait he-“
  “I’m going to get a drink.”
  “Akira I’m not sure if-“
  “Not an alcoholic drink, warugaki. Anything non-alcoholic they have.”
  Dori seemed relieved and for a moment, and Akira wondered if he’d really thought he would go down that hole again, just because of his nerves. They did not speak for a while as Akira walked down to the part of the mansion where he could see the drinks and food. His eyes moved over the different kinds of drinks, and he eventually settled for a simple cola. As long as his hand could hold something, he would be fine.
  “There’s someone else hiding against the walls as well, maybe you should join her.” Dori’s voice was filled with amusement again, and Akira let out a fake chuckle.
  “Shut up, I’ll just wait here, I’m sure we can watch people from this side.”
  
  “Calm down, you’re going to break a finger,’’ Dori whispered.
  His gaze moved down to his fingers that were around the glass, almost white due to the pressure he put on them. He slowly loosened his grip a little bit and downed the last few sips of cola from his glass.
  “Why are we here... I want to leave,’’ Akira groaned, but Dori wasn’t having it.
  “You’re not leaving. Get another drink and calm down.”
  For now he agreed, picking up another drink after which he positioned himself in the same spot he’d been standing for quite a while.
  “I do not see anything interesting,’’ he eventually stated while shrugging his shoulders with a deep sigh. “Everyone is hidden behind masks; I can’t even enjoy a good-looking man properly around here.” Now there was a joking undertone in his voice, at least it indicated even the smallest amount of enjoyment. If one could call it that, that was.
