Prince Alexander

4:33 PM -- The Palace of Illéa

Alexander rounded the corner of the hallway nearest to his room, situated on the third floor of the palace. The Selected would surely be arriving within the hour, and still, it seemed surreal. Before sunset, thirty-five women from around the country would be at his home to meet him. The thought seemed rather imaginary, really. It's not like Alexander got to spend a lot of time with girls, other than his elder sister, Serena, but she had married the king of Italy earlier this year. Her obligations were to the Italians now, and her family simply was not a part of that equation. Things were certainly different for Alexander. He had been raised for his duties, born to be King.

As he strode down the guard-lined hall of the palace, he lifted his head slightly, and noticed a figure standing a few feet away. His thoughts of The Selected temporarily drained from his mind, as he greeted his mother with a warm smile and a bow. "Hi, Mom," he said after he regained his previous posture. Queen Adelaide's lips turned up ever so slightly as her son approached, though her eyes shone with pride. "So," she began, "today's the big day. You nervous?" She gently prodded Alexander in the rib once. She and her son had a rare relationship: it was at times informal, though she could, and would be stern with him if needed. Alexander's shoulders raised and dropped quickly in a shrug, the collar of his shirt traveling slightly up his neck before falling. He loosened his tie a bit as he considered his answer, giving his hands something to do. "Not really. Excited mostly. Though, I have a strong feeling that will change when I see them." His voice flowed from his lips in a light chuckle, seeming to lighten the room around them. "Glad to hear it," his mother replied with a grin, elbowing him once before continuing to walk down the hall, heading for the King's office.

Alexander smiled and nodded his head once to her in acknowledgement as she passed him, a sign of respect. Noticing he still had his suit coat draped over his left arm, he let out an exasperated sigh before slipping it on.

Just as he made it to the second floor of the palace, yet another familiar face popped into view, walking at a brisk pace toward him. "Hello, Jeffery," Alexander said, knowing this particular butler. "They have arrived, sir. They are coming into the main foyer," Jeffery replied, a broad grin spreading across his face. Alexander knew that it was not exactly traditional for him to meet the ladies until their second day at the palace, but he couldn't help but rush to the railing overlooking the foyer referenced. Beaming, he watched them interact with one another nervously, hoping that his parents wouldn't catch him cheating the system. So what if they did? he asked himself. After all, it is my selection.
