The Rookie

Today was the day Bryce would be replaced...

Everything was about to change...

But the detective sat in the dark with a hot beverage...

Arthur sipped his coffee, the strong scent failing to remove the thought of a new partner from his jaded mind, "Tch."

The girl would be disappointed...

He first partner should be someone like herself...

But instead she got a broken man...

This was the day Detective Stevenski hoped would never come, it hadn't even been two months since Detective Benett was shot down... Like an angel out of the sky, except his wings weren't their to keep him from falling, because what Bryce hadn't known was that they were already broken... Like a leaf on the sidewalk in New York, New York... In pieces on the ground.

The man kicked his feet up onto the desk, staring at the ceiling with his dull blue eyes, the dust falling silently, unnoticed, and resting on his unshaven face. He exhaled a hot breath of tainted air and released the faint scent of alcohol into the closed office, with the blinds drawn a single ray of light was all he had to see by, glasses rested on the desk... Though by rested, one might say they were sprawled atop his fine mahogany foot rest.

"Ugh..."

The closest thing he'd done to speech, well, what most resembled speech... An onomatopoeia, a formation of letters used to represent sound, though this was audible, so it was simply another sound left over from man's primitive era.

He pressed the butt of a lit cigarette to his lips and inhaled the thick smoke, honestly hoping that the nicotine would damage his lungs before the rookie arrived for her first day of work.

"Damn..."

The man exhaled smoke like some sort of a... Human dragon, but without the flame that started it's brief life, the gray cloud's gaseous appearance quickly dissipating.

Tick...

Tock...

Don! Don!

Why was it that time moved in such painfully slow motion since Bryce passed away?

The day finally came, the day Aria has been waiting for to finally start pursuing her dreams. The day she takes her first step in completing the promise she made her late father Detective Arnold Montgomery.

She stood outside the Double Glass Doors of one of the best Detective Agencies in the country. It wasn't easy for her to get here despite her outstanding grades and college records, but she never gave up. This was something she truly wanted.

"Alright Aria... Let's do this." She whispered encouragingly to herself as she draw in a deep breath, and slowly letting it out. Slowly she took a step and opened the double doors. Aria stood in the middle of the Agencies Reception area, feeling lost right away. She opened the folder she had with her and scanned through some pages, she was already assigned to a local team and was told by the chief she was under that she will be paired up right away with another detective.

Aria was curious whether who it was, she can't believe it. Her first day and she's already got herself a partner... She was pretty sure they were gonna be really good friends.... Or so she thought. Feeling lost she walked over to a tall woman asking for directions.

"Excuse me..." Aria said softly.

"Yes?"

Aria showed her the folder containing her assigned office. "Do you know where this is? I'm lost."

The woman's eyes grew wide. "Oh boy. Your the new recruit? The rookie assigned to Team 3 crime operations?"

Aria nodded in response. How did she even know? "You have no idea who your partners gonna be don't you?... Well honey your about to find out. Take the elevator, 5th floor. First door on your right.... Good luck." The woman said with a smirk and walked away. Aria's eyebrow furrowed. What was she talking about? Quickly she followed her directions with a smile wide on her face.

Scuff-tssh

Scuff-tssh

He heard the sound coming up the hallway, was this just another worker or the... New 'partner' who he'd hoped wouldn't show, if she was anything like- "E-Eh..." He detective froze up, the person who'd swept the ashes from his floor had thought it would be a good idea to put 'that' picture back into it's upright position.

The detective caught a glimpse before flipping it face-down once more, sighing heavily as he covered his face with his palms, this day was just as bad as each day before and he knew it could only get worse from then on.

Time to turn off the tv... And watch my little brother... Catch you on the flip side, Artie...

Those last few words haunted him, how could Bryce be so calm about it... It wasn't fair!

Detective Stevenski was on the verge of another breakdown when he heard some of the other employees' chatter, the rumors still spread far and wide through the entire area, though when he passed through for check-in he only heard bits and pieces.

They were enough, he knew what everyone was saying, either he was told directly or he pieced it together, he was one of the more skilled detectives, though he dare not say the best.

Who was this young woman... What was she like?

Hopefully she was a flake, she still had the change to hear a rumor and become another no-show, he liked them much more than the 'dedicated' rooks that the others had to deal with...

Aria now stood in front of the Office Door she's assigned too. She was told that inside were a number of other detectives. She was suppose to go look for the Chief Inspector she was assigned to be under. What was his name? How could she have forgotten already? Quickly she opened the folder on her hands and scanned through a few pages before finding the name she was looking for.

"Chief Inspector Reynolds"

Aria frowned. "They should've at least included a picture." She commented and shut the folder close. Slowly Aria took in a deep breath... She was nervous, it was her first day after all. Who wouldn't be right? Slowly she placed her hand on the door knob and turned it, opening the door.

She peeked her head in seeing a number of people doing various activities inside. Some scanning through papers, others on their computers, and some on a break drinking coffee and chatting with their colleagues. She slowly took a step inside as she tucked a hair behind her ear.

"Excuse me?" She said softly.

"Oh boy there she is."

"She is screwed."

"Welcome to hell rookie"

She heard different people whisper, others complimenting loud enough for her to purposely hear. Aria had no idea what they were even talking about, should she be worried?

"MR. STEVENSKI!" A loud deep voice yelled making Aria jump in surprise. She looked at the man dressed in a business suit... The name tag says....

"Oh... So he's the Chief Inspector."

"Come meet your new..... Partner." Why does it seem like he said that in a wrong way? Now Aria's really feels worried.

With the loud yelling from the chief, Detective Stevenski nearly fell from his seat, the man wasn't exactly close to him, Reynolds was just loud and his voice carried. The man's feet dropped, hitting the floor with a light tap as he spun around in his computer-type chair.

'Why didn't I quit when I had an excuse...?' Arthur sighed, his thoughts still clouded, his judgement impaired, though he'd never tell, he couldn't see the door from his spot in the big leather chair, it was too far and he was too near-sided.

The man grumbled, his words inaudible as the cigarette went out and slipped from his loose grip, dropping and spreading ashes on the floor.

Whatever... I really don't give a shit anymore...

He could here the footsteps getting closer but he didn't turn to look towards the entrance to his office, too tired, too irritated to try and talk to the new girl, maybe if he was quiet long enough she'd go home and think he'd died in the office waiting for her.

He could only hope, as the voices were nearing him as well, one he didn't recognize, the other he just didn't like. Couldn't he just become one of the lone detectives? They had it good, he wouldn't even ask for a pay raise, he just didn't think he'd be able to handle having another partner so soon.

(Sorry, passed out Nd now have school, ugh.)

Aria stood there in front of the office door of her new 'Partner'

why is he still in there?! Didn't he even hear the chief inspector's order?

"MR STEVENSKI!" Reynolds yelled again while hitting his clenched fist on the detective's door.

Aria on the other hand found herself covering her ears because of the man's voice.

'How on earth can someone have such a loud voice?' Aria thought to herself irritated.

"Maybe he's not there?" Aria suggested and slowly walked to the door herself and knocked.

"Oh trust me. He's there." Chief Inspector Reynolds said assuringly with a nod.

Should she try calling him herself? Would that work? Aria wondered.

She gave the door three knocks before speaking.

"Hello? I'm Aria... Your new um..." She hesitated for a while. For her, even the idea of having a 'Partner' immediately on her first day was strange.

"Partner..." She continued nervously. She leaned her head against that door, the strong odor of smoke started entering

her nostrils.

Three more knocks. "Detective Stevenskie?"

'Well he's very welcoming now isn't he.'

(lol Its okay :) Good luck at school! Its night time for me. Wow talk about time difference.)

(Lol)

"I'm not interested!" Stevenski shouted back in an unusually aggressive tone, storming through to the door and unlocking it so that he could open it enough to speak to the girl behind it. "I'll just get you killed, kid, go back home!" The man barked, slamming the door shut in her youthful face.

"I don't need a new partner anyways, in fact, if you persist I'll be forced to accept and one of us won't make it back to the office... With my luck that one would be a rookie." Stevenski said, slamming his fists on the desk and sending the upside-down frame crashing to the ground, glass shattering loudly as it was brought down by gravity.

"Dammit, just go away, leave me the hell alone so I can drink myself to death..." He spoke gruffly, picking up shards of glass, the pain of the pieces cutting his palms dulled by his ongoing depression, blood still stained the floor though, as Detective Benett's death stained his conscience.

What would Bryce say?

Just give it a chance, change can be a good thing!

That's exactly what he would've said, had he been alive...

"Just give me a minute to... Clean up this mess..." He sighed, looking at the picture. "Even beyond the grave, ey, Bry?" He chuckled, a tear streaming down his cheek before he dumped the glass into the trash and unlocked the door, photo in hand.

"Don't say I didn't warn you, rook."

Arthur muttered, blue eyes narrowed.

(Daaaamn you have skills! I nearly cried :'( Poor Arhtur </3 )

"I'm not interested!" Lizzie found herself taking a step back as the well know detective inside yelled.

Her heart skipped a beat at that moment. What the hell is his problem!?

Suddenly she heard footsteps getting closer towards the door, then locks being unlocked.... Then finally the door opened.

At first she thought maybe he changed his mind. But then when Aria saw that the opening was barely enough for even

half her body to enter, she was sure he didn't. She found her eyebrows slightly raising in wonder when she saw the detective's face.

'How can such a good looking man have such a depressing attitude?!'

"I'll just get you killed, kid, go back home!"

Aria found herself gasping the moment he slammed the door shut in her face, Reynolds on the other hand shook his head.

Like this was something he already expected.

She was also sure that the 'Rude Detective' said something else even from inside and behind his desk. But she felt like crying...

Her heart was loud enough for her to even hear anything else.

She wanted to hit the door with her fist when she heard him speak again... This time it was something good...

Something she wanted to hear.

"Just give me a minute to... Clean up this mess..." Aria found herself smiling in delight. At hearing that, chief reynolds gave her a pat on the back and walked away. After a while more the door opened, his handsome face a few distance from her.

"Don't say I didn't warn you,
rook." Aria smiled at him and nodded. She didn't exactly know what he meant, but its either the danger she's about to go through.... Or the Trouble HE'S about to put her through,

"Yes sir!"

Arthur flinched, backing up a bit and clenching his fists at her sudden positivity, if he'd been in the office alone a day longer he might have slapped her, she gave off that same vibe as Bryce and it cut his heart up to get that bittersweet taste in his mouth, he was glad to be around someone so positive... But it tore him up that he would be forced to remember his best friend every time she spoke.

"Just shut up! I'm a detective, not a military sergeant!"

The man snapped, eyes aglow with his deadly mix of emotions, each one conflicting and tearing at his already frail mind, it took everything he had not to break down then and there now that he was presented with a person he could potentially lean on while his mental wounds healed and relieved him of his agony.

"J-Just... Come in and sit down or whatever... I don't really care what you do, just shut up... I have to go take care of... Some personal business before I deal with you."

Arthur released the photo in his hand onto the desk, loitering a moment with his palms rested on the desk.

"Ugh..."

He ran his fingers through his hair and stood up straight a moment before he walked out and headed down the hall, slouching as he mumbled something to himself. The detective, once out of visual range of the woman, walked up to a large window, pushing it open enough for the wind to blow in.

"Why is everyone so... Casual... Why am I the one that's depressed..."

Arthur rested his elbows on the windowsill and his face in his hands, what he'd expected to be a few tears becoming a steady flow of liquid sorrow, soaking his sleeves and wetting his arms as he tried hopelessly to stop crying, but it only seemed to get worse the more his mind drifted, simple weeping becoming heavy sobbing, and he began to feel weak in the knees, both due to fatigue and crippling agony.

Everyone who noticed passed without a word, he'd pushed them all away and was now a depressed man without a friend in the world, especially now that Bryce was gone.

Arthur struggled to regain his composure, wiping his eyes and becoming irritated by his congestion.

Through his blurred vision he could see that at least twenty minutes had passed, and he prayed that woman wouldn't come looking for him.

Why was life so cruel?

(Gooooood you should become like an author or something! <3)

Aria kept her eyes on him as he slowly walked out of the room. Mentally she made a note to herself.

'No more calling him SIR... He hates it'

She walked towards his desk, her eyes scanning the room. The strong stench of alcohol and smoke stronger than when she was outside.

"Is this detective depressed or what?" She wondered to herself. Once she was closer to his table she saw Cigarette butts down on the floor.

A few fragments of shattered glass and.... Aria's attention was caught by something on his desk. Slowly she reached for it and took a good look.

She nearly couldn't believe her eyes." That rude jerk can actually smile?" Aria teased. Slowly she squinted her eyes at the man next to him... He wasn't in anyway familiar at all. But one thing was for sure to Aria...

Something has changed this man... Because even though they share the same face. This man, and the man who yelled at her were two different people. Out of nowhere a quote entered her mind. 'Pain changes people'... Could it be connected?

A knock came on the door that made aria jump in surprise. "Oh god... Um come in..." It was the Chief Inspector along with some workers bringing in a new desk and a computer chair for her.So they'll be sharing the same office? Aria smiled and thanked them before leaving.

"Where is he? its been 20 minutes already." Aria argued with herself whether she should follow him or not. But the heck with it. Unconsciously she went out the door and made her way towards the hall. "Where on earth did he-" That's when Aria saw him, leaning there against the Large window of the agency, he was fragile... and in tears.

Slowly she took a step closer... "Mr. Stevenski..." She said in formality. "Are you... are you okay?" She bit her lip waiting for his response. As her heart started thudding harder in her chest.

The man froze, hesitantly glancing over his slumped shoulder to see the rookie , "Wh- Go away... Can't a man cry alone?" He said to the young woman, his voice angered but his eyes showed his sorrow, how their color represented his emotion at the time.

This 'new partner' was going to drive him crazy, every time he looked at her he had to blink to clear the blurred image of Bryce, disappointed when it wasn't actually him standing there, every second of every day hammered the reality of life deeper into his waking mind.

"P-Please, just go..."

He covered his face with his hands once more, shoulders trembling as he fought back another breakdown, by the time he came back to reality he felt a stinging in his face and remembered that his nails hadn't been cut in a while, blood came in a thin stream from a point above his brow.

"Dammit! Just leave me the hell alone!"

He snapped, though as he spoke he didn't consider how much it would progress the flow of his tears, it was happening again...

How could he even be respected like this? It was shameful for a rookie to see him this way, and yet he was far too weak to stifle his tears in front of her.

(Omg, the flattery is too intense!)

Aria wanted to do what she asked. She wanted to walk away and give the man some space... But she knows she can't just leave him like this.

Now Aria was pretty sure she's missing something, but at the same time she was right... He was in pain.

Could the man in the picture he was with be involved in this? who was he?

Questions after questions ran through Aria's head as her yes were locked on the fragile man in front of her. Aside from actors and movies, this was the first time she has ever seen a man cry in such a manner. This could only mean that he was in agony, how could he have even work in this case? He should be on a break.

Aria slowly took more steps till she was now behind him.

"You know... I have no idea why your acting that way. But I have my own guess... But you know you need to stay strong right? Life is full of shit. There's a whole lot of other things going on than what your feeling right now... Now I know I don't have right to say that but... Its true... And you should know that."

Another step close and she was now beside him. Her eyes grew wide as she saw crimson red blood drip down from his elbow.

"Oh my god your bleeding!" Quickly she ran to the nearest first aid kit and brought it back to him. She knew he would reject this but the heck with it.

"Here." Slowly she pours Betadine on a cotton ball. "Take it... Hurry your bleeding."

"No one told you... Did they..."

Arthur chuckled sadly, his vision only fogging more as he did, "Dammit, I'm sorry you have to see a grown man cry, pathetic, I know... Don't think my apology means I appreciate your company or something like that..."

The man sighed, his voice muffled by congestion as he looked down at the ground below the window, five floors could definitely- "Jesus! Back up!" He panicked, flinching as he saw the woman right next to him before she said "Oh my god!" Leaving him to thinking he'd chased her off, and then hearing something about blood and sighing.

"You're bleeding!"

"It's just a scratch, unfortunately..." He grumbled, looking back down at the ground, how high would it need to be to- "Take it... Hurry, you're bleeding."

"We'll, y'know what, my partner's dead!!! Don't fucking worry about such a small cut!" In his outrage he smacked her hand away, stumbling backwards before he steadied himself, anger on his tear-soaked face for a moment before he smacked his hand over his mouth, he could've sworn someone spoke in the back of his mind, his heart pounding in his chest before he began sobbing openly.

Bryce would be ashamed of his actions, but he'd rather face an angry man than a dead one, especially when he blamed himself for it. Arthur momentarily forgot that the woman was still present, and when he remembered it still didn't change a thing, he couldn't stop himself when they were so similar, how could he have such terrible luck, paired with a woman that could be Detective Benett in another life?

" Why the hell can't you just... "

He couldn't finish the sentence and was left standing there, dazed, fatigued, depressed, and angry...

Though this time, he was angry at himself.

Aria held her hand that James smacked harder than he probably wanted, the cotton ball dropping to the ground in silence.

Everything he said was still sinking into her...

'So that's why. He's partner died... The guy on the picture... That's probably him'

Her eyes remained locked on the broken man in front of her.... He appears to be broken beyond repair. But Aria knew better than that.

"H-how- How do you think he would feel right now... Huh?!" Aria's voice started getting louder than she expected.

"How do you think he would feel to see you like that!? Do you think he'll want you to spend the rest of your life blaming yourself for his death!? Is that what you want?!" Her eyes now slightly blurry with tears. She didn't know why, it just suddenly came.

"Are you and idiot?...." She didn't mean to loose her respect but she was so into it... "Yeah, okay he died. You blame yourself I get it.... But the least you could do for that person is accept it!" She shook her head and placed a hand on her forehead. Slowly, a tear fell from her eyes.

Then she wondered.... Was she talking to Arthur about his partners death? .... Or was she talking to herself about her father?

She closed her eyes. Out of nowhere she heard whispers from behind her. When she glanced back sure enough, everyone came out of their offices, stopped their work and watched them.

"You don't understand what it's like for your family to be picked off by criminals!"

The man snapped, eyes narrowed as the tears continued,

"To be raised by your grandparents and have them die, right after your dreams are crushed by something out of your control!"

He walked towards her, blood still dripping off of his chin as his rage intensified,

"For seven long painful years I had one friend, he'd done nothing wrong to ANYONE and he was shot because I wasn't focused!!!"

Arthur felt his face heating, the only thing keeping him from bursting into flames was the rain of his sorrow, how dare this woman act as if a death was nothing.

"And I know he wouldn't want to see me this way, that's why I didn't want a god damn 'new partner' in the first place!"

The man span on his heel, shoving his way through the crowd to escape the situation, why was this woman putting Bryce's death off like it was nothing?!

Aria stood there.... in shock and embarrassment. He was right... Maybe Aria was just in denial herself... She knew more than anyone what it was like to loose someone so important to you. Slowly she turned around and saw everyone whispering and chuckling like asshole's evesdropping on someone else's conversation.

She didn't know what to do, or where to go. Her feet wouldn't let her, it was like she was stuck in a quick sand and she had no way out of it. Slowly she took a step, everyone moves aside as she passed through.

"Where did he-.... Where did he go?" Aria asked but didn't stare at anyone.

"Back inside." A random voice said, aria didn't bother to look at who it was.

She made her way back to the office and knocked on the door... "I'm sorry,"

Detective Stevenski rifled through his things, ignoring the blood on his face as he slowly simmered down, this woman was going to drive him insane.

How could someone be so similar to Bryce but so much like himself as well? Maybe she was the crazy one and he was a perfectly sane man.

*knock* *knock* "Sorry..."

He wanted to say 'Go away' but he knew she'd persist, mumbling to himself before he decided to speak,

"Don't talk about it, just come in and put your ass in your seat and... Don't bring it up... Can't say that we'll get along though, but if I want to keep my job I'm going to have to work with... You..."

He continued looking through his things, not bothering to see if she'd be coming back in.

Slowly, Aria turned the knob and entered before closing the door behind her.

She wanted to apologize yet again but chose not to. After all he probably would just ask her to shut up.

And he also asked her to not talk about it. So instead she walked back to her seat and sat still.

Aria took a glance at him, he was still bleeding, some of the blood was already dried up.

From her pocket she took out a pink handkerchief and handed it to him. "Here... Your um... Still bleeding."

Her eyes then dropped to the picture on his desk... Suddenly she wished that the Arthur that was here with her now, was the arthur in this picture.

He caught her gaze looking at the picture and slapped his hand down on top of it, sliding it towards himself to move it away from the woman,

"You're a month too late to meet either of the people in this picture, I'm afraid."

Arthur looked at the photo with glassy eyes, quickly blinking away the tears that rose in mourning of the loss of two happy people, one whose fate could be considered worse than death. The fate being a lifetime of sorrow, and a lifetime of emptiness.

That was no life, this was his job, he needed to be professional about the change, however much he disliked the idea he needed to be cooperative.

Arthur's words caught Aria off guard. It was like he was able to read what he was thinking...

"What happened to him?" Aria asked him, her tone now serious. She really was curious, and now she understood why he's 'acting' the way he does.

He isn't this rude insensitive guy he shows he is. Deep down was the real Arthur Stevenski. The one he shows everyone was more like an act... Perhaps like a defense mechanism to hide the unbearable pain of his past.
