This RP will follow the lives of a rich and powerful organised crime family residing in Queens, NYC. With the ageing Marino Family patriarch, Salvatore, rumoured to be stepping down in the coming years, attention has turned to who will replace him in the family business. Between his children and trusted underboss, any one of them could take his place. The challenge is to receive both his recommendation and the support of most others within the organisation.

This RP will be primarily driven by relationships and drama within the family, their highest employees, as well as friends and significant associates. As well as the ruthless and fiery tension amongst those closest to each other, I will also throw in outside threats and challenges from rival gangs, law enforcement, and others set to make life even more complicated for our characters. Let's make this is dramatic and fiery as we can!

  Benjamin was the first child to be born to Salvatore and Margaret. From a young age, he looked up to his father and wanted to impress him. Whatever his father said, the boy believed to be true and whatever was asked of him, he would do to the best of his ability. Even as Benjamin got older and wiser to the realities of the world and his family, it didn't stop him from holding Salvatore in high regard. As the eldest, he felt he was destined to one day inherit his family's business. He both wanted it and believed he deserved it, even if simply being the eldest sibling may not necessarily dictate it.
  
  Through his childhood, one of his best friends was Rosemary and as they became teenagers, their friendship blossomed into romance. She was his first love and the two of them were married by the time they were both 18. Not long after, their first child was born. They then had a second child, named Kathryn.
  
  Although his marriage was perfect, with Rosemary a loving wife and a doting mother, things couldn't be said for his Irish in-laws. Rosemary's parents saw Benjamin as a criminal and a dangerous man, given his family's sources of wealth and the man's own questionable morals. Alongside his studies, Benjamin did everything he could to support Salvatore's business, even if it meant getting his hands dirty when needed. Even when he'd graduated university and purchased his own factory, he still made sure to do his part for his family's business. Owning his own business was one achievement, but Benjamin was always an ambitious man and he knew he was capable of even more. He still believed that one day he was be the head of the Marino family.
  
  However, when he returned home one evening after taking the children bowling, he found Rosemary dead on the living room floor. She'd been shot during an apparent home invasion. Possessions had been stolen, but none of that mattered when the woman he loved had been taken from him. His grief was only made worse by Rosemary's parents blaming him for their death, accusing him of somehow being behind it, either directly or by inviting danger into his home. Even when his in-laws came to their senses and left him alone, he still struggled on an emotional level. Benjamin shut himself off from his children and instead buried his head in work, leaving their extended family and a nanny to look after them.
  
  When the US joined World War I, Benjamin didn't hesitate to register for the draft. He believed his children were better off without him and in some ways, he thought fighting for his country would somehow make up for failing them. It had been a shock at first to kill another man, but as his time fighting in the war went on, he found it easier to do and it ceased weighing on his conscience.
  
  By the time he returned from from the war, he had new mental scars, and healing wounds, to show for it. Despite this, the time away from his kids had made him long for them more than he thought he could. So on his return home, he put everything into making up for lost time and trying to be a real father to them. As strict as he was, he made sure to be loving and supportive too.
  
  Benjamin also returned to business, with a fresh spring in his step and an energised need to succeed. He was a more ruthless and decisive man, determined to succeed, no matter what the cost. Benjamin had never been averse to getting his hands dirty, but when it came to his family's business, he was now more than willing to get them bloody too. He will adopt all methods necessary to succeed, be it intimidation, torture, or murder itself. Benjamin is willing to cross all lines in the name of his family's business. He certainly deserves to inherit it more than Frank ever will!

  Sylvia O'Farley was born to a working class Irish immigrant family who had come to the United States following the Irish Potato Famine, in search of economic opportunities as well as their own survival. She was raised among a dozen siblings, all of whom were expected to work at an early age to make ends meet. Sylvia learned at an early age the difficulties faced by Irish communities in finding work and fending off mistrust and discrimination from their neighbors. She vowed from then that she would devote her life to a sacred crusade in fighting for the interests of Irish-Americans.
  
  Blessed with a uniquely methodical sort of genius, Sylvia managed to draw the attention of some influential members of her community. These wealthy and politically-connected patrons sponsored Sylvia's education and gave her a better paying job than any of her siblings. Sylvia used her influence to steadily climb the ranks, eventually being appointed the Chair of the Child Welfare Board in the New York City government. She used her position to delegate funds to support Irish American children, grant more lower-level appointed positions to Irish Americans, and even divert some of the funds to her own personal projects and desires.
  
  Her political marriage to John Joseph Harrington allowed her to spread her influence even further, utilizing her newly inherited health to fund her favored projects and groups more directly, helping to turn a blind eye to organized crime, and even helping to support New York Governor Al Smith in his planned presidential run in 1928.

  People can be forgiven for seeing Margaret as a simple housewife, who will overlook the wrongdoings of men and give in to their commands. Those people wouldn't be looking hard enough to see beyond the public picture painted. Whilst she has made sacrifices and allowed herself to fall into society's ideals for a woman, there is a fierceness beneath it all. Margaret is not afraid to speak up and criticise others, including her husband, albeit choosing do so away from others. Nor does she hold back on giving others a piece of her mind - publicly, should the situation call for it. Margaret may consciously choose to allow certain behaviours, but it doesn't mean she fully accepts them or forgets. She has simply learned to pick her battles wisely, as well as to put Salvatore's business and the family name first.
  
  She is fiercely protective over her husband and sons, so will gladly wash away her own reservations for the bigger picture. Although seeing the ruthless behaviours in Benjamin and Frank does concern her, she would still defend all of her children with every last breath.
  
  She is loyal to her husband and will always support him. That doesn't mean she isn't afraid to speak up and will choose the right moment - usually in private - to give him a piece of her mind. Living in a family with ambitious and outspoken men, she has had to adapt to often being the only voice of reason (in her opinion), especially emotionally, so she won't hesitate to throw in her two cents when others are blinded by their macho egos.
  
  Margaret's maternal instincts don't stop with her kids, grandkids, and other family members. She also displays warmth and concern for some of the closest associates, employees, and family friends. Whether it's simply offering them a warm drink or showing concern should one of them appear hurt, she feels anyone truly loyal to the family's risky business deserves to be looked after!
  
  As well as running a household, Margaret will often step into business-mode. Over the years, she's learned how things work and knows what needs to be done. She's not afraid to command employees as her husband would.

  Both siblings were raised with the importance of hard work and education being drilled into them, with their father wanting the family to thrive in the city. Margaret wasn't spared their father's heavy hand and harsh lectures, with even the smallest misbehaviour being punished. Whilst Margaret was intelligent, burying her head in books and expressing herself creatively, her parents made it clear her path was to be a wife and mother, thereby instilling her place in society as a woman. Margaret always resented the idea, but accepted it for as long as she was living with them.
  
  Yet, despite her reservations, Margaret did get married, to Salvatore Marino. The man's wealth and power in New York meant her parents had no arguments with her choice of husband. If anything, they encouraged it, given their own aspirations for the Harrington name. Everyone was happy, and Margaret was even more so when their first child, Benjamin was born, and then Frank a couple of years later.
  
  She was aware of Salvatore's criminal enterprises when she fell in love with him and so that had always been something she accepted. Even without her father pushing her towards it, she accepted it. Of course, there were doubts early on, not only about incriminating herself by association, but also the dangers Salvatore's businesses could bring to their doorstep. Those doubts were put to rest in time and she instead learned to support, embrace, and protect her husband's choices.

  Cassandra was born the eldest daughter by barely a year of Benjamin Marino. Her upbringing was fairly quaint and blissful- at least up until her mother tragically passed away. Always the more introverted and quiet child, Cassandra become even more withdrawn following this incident, burying herself in her books and studies and thus growing further and further apart from her sister Kathryn, who grew up to be rather rambunctious in a lot of ways. Her increasingly distant father also meant that Cassandra usually found herself somewhat isolated from her immediate family, causing her to rely more on other institutions and family members in order to get by.
  
  Nowadays, she is a university student at the same college as her younger sister, during which she tried her best to reign in Kathryn's more destructive tendencies and instruct upon her some semblance of discipline and manners. She also gained a job as a reporter and editor for a major newspaper in the city, specializing in cases and stories involving organized crime... none the wiser (perhaps deliberately) that her own family was a head participant in said crime.

  Paul was born to Austrian-Jewish immigrants Elias and Roxanna in Queens, New York in 1878. Paul and his five siblings would grow up in the eastern Jewish enclave in Queens. Paul’s father Elias was a lawyer by trade in Austria-Hungary, but his status as a Jewish man made him persona non grata in the increasingly hostile social landscape. Elias would ply his trade legally in New York, protecting the many merchants in the neighborhood. Paul’s siblings weren’t interested in the legal profession, but Paul was, and he followed his father everywhere on escapades to see the wares of Austrian Jews, and how Elias could make expensive wares vanish in legal fine print. Paul wasn’t much for the fine letter of the law, but would remember faces, names, favorite foods, and important details easily. His gift of gab could often turn a hostile crowd sympathetic.
  
  Paul wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps, and so he went to study law at an early age, while still aiding his father’s legal profession. After Paul obtained his degree, he tried to join a number of firms in the city. He was met with opposition. White Anglo-Saxon Protestant law firms were prejudiced against Jewish people, and the Jewish firms which did exist in the city often catered to the established German Jewish families of the city. Paul instead went his own way, joining his father Elias in 1899 (making it Woertzel & Sons, as Paul’s older brother Rudolph was a clerk for the office). Elias fell ill in 1901, and would become bedridden. With Paul as the only practicing lawyer in the firm, he took on the burden of the cases and people entrusted to his legal knowledge.
  
  Paul excelled at legal practice. His ability to get eastern Jewish people out from under legal jeopardy quickly grew his legal profession into a community icon. Even if it meant a number of crooked men would get off scot-free too. For Paul it was the principle of the matter: everyone deserves a fair shake. And for Paul, that meant sometimes bending the rules to favor the weaker man.
  
  Paul’s bread and butter was developing sources. He had fluency in Yiddish, Hebrew, English, German, Hungarian, Sicilian, and even some Russian. This meant he could talk to many people in different communities, and find the right wiseguys to gather together for his causes. This could range from getting people to protest in front of a district attorney’s office, to having a few documents lifted from a lawman’s private office. By all appearances, Paul was a respectable lawyer who did good for his clients, which brought him to the attention of Salvatorre Marino.
  
  Salvatore Marino had a burgeoning legal and illegal business empire, protected by his long-time lawyer and fixer Zachariah Heidelberger, a man of German-Italian Jewish descent. When Zachariah’s health began to fail, he wanted to step out of the legal profession without leaving Sal high and dry. So, Zachariah referred Sal to an up and coming lawyer named Paul Woertzel. Woertzel was a dependable guy who could “get things done” so to speak. Sal knew what Zachariah meant, and after a protracted meeting at a restaurant in 1906, Sal and Paul became partners. Paul protected Sal’s family and his illegal businesses, as well as being a fixer, finding the right kind of people for the right kind of jobs.
  
  Paul met his first wife Elizewa Danziger in 1903 while buying a new suit for himself in a tailor’s shop. They would marry in 1904, and had three children together: Issac, Yoanna, and Elias. Elizewa would die in 1918 from the Spanish Flu. Paul would later meet Zora Uriel in 1919. Zora was a woman of Greek-Jewish descent who edited for a segment of a local Greek magazine. The two hit it off in one of the early jazz clubs of the time. Zora was also widowed by the Spanish Flu. The two would marry shortly after their meeting. Zora had one child from her previous marriage, Antonios.

  John Joseph‘s grandparents immigrated to New York in 1847. They started with nothing and grew their home and wealth with their bare hands. He was raised with a sense of duty to his family and a desire to work hard to continue to better his family's wealth and power.
  
  His father had been notorious for his heavy hand and narrow ideals, which were instilled in his son. While his father worked manual labour and managed to keep their family finances afloat, John Joseph aspired to be more, to have more. He watched his parents struggle to make payments and threatened to be evicted more times than he could count. He knew, from a young age, that he would do better, be better.
  
  To celebrate the end of his education and his newfound employment on the same factory floor as his father, John Joseph was brought to the race track for the very first time by his father. There he was introduced to the world of illegal gambling. Of course, this father took no part of it, despite the betting boys near-constant presence in the stands. He was devout in the belief the better was a sin and told John Joseph as much.
  
  But John Joseph saw something very different that day. The betting boys were not much of an interest to him but the men they spoke with, the men who handed over bills, rolls of bills.
  
  At the end of the race, he'd caught a glimpse of one of the racing winners - not the jockey or horse but the winner who had bet correctly. The praise and looks of respect, his fine clothing and, of course, the money.
  
  Instead of starting work alongside his father, he joined the race track and started working there first mucking out the stables until he moved up to working the gates. He worked among the brokers until he managed to get himself involved and worked his way to the top; before he met Salvatore, he rang the gambling ring at the racetrack.
  
  It was at this very place where he met Salvatore, turning over the winnings to the head of the Marino family and soon introduced his sister to the man. Their relationship was a happy one, but for John Joseph, it was about the power and connections it brought him.

  Henry was born to Charles and Ruth Booker in their family home in 1887. His father was killed in a factory accident when he was six months old, and despite never having known the man, Henry idolized who he had been. Ruth kept close with the other factory worker wives and most of Henry’s youth was hearing stories of what a great man his father, the floor rep, had been.
  
  He had always wanted the same for himself, to be idolized by those he knew and worked with, and much of his time in the education system reflected this. He was elected class rep in nearly every grade and was often selected by teachers to represent the class on various public holidays and events.
  
  This trait continued after, at every place he was employed when he got his first job at the same steel factory his father had worked at previously. From a young age, he was outspoken and charming and not only swiftly followed in his father’s footsteps but superseded them when he met one of the few steel tradesmen during his lunch break one day. The older gentleman was kind and took a liking to him immediately. A week later the tradesmen returned and offered Henry an apprenticeship which he gladly accepted.
  
  His career exploded after this, and he quickly became one of the highest steel sales reps in New York; building relationships with not just factory owners but with pillars of the community all around.
  
  Henry enlisted during the first drafts of the war, and despite surviving it, he does not discuss what happened overseas, simply bypassing the question with a simple statement of: “It’s done and over with now, why dwell on the past?
  
  As for Henry’s love life, it’s been complicated. He has known he has always had an attraction to both men and women, though the former is severely frowned upon in public. He had always kept his attraction to men hidden from everyone, save for those who end up as his partner, but he is extremely discrete and does not just wind up in people’s beds, despite his charismatic and flirtatious personality.

  Salvatore wasn't always the powerful mythos of Queens. He had a humble beginning, like many in the city. His parents, Bengino and Arianna, were Sicilian immigrants. By the time he was born, his parents had established a simple corner grocery market in their neighborhood with the last of their money. Marino's Market was under his family's apartment and the root of his hard work. Alongside his younger sibling, the two grew up working the store as soon as they could talk. Whether it was stocking, running the register, or unloading shipments, Salvatore was there. His mother spent her evenings teaching them, since education wasn't of primary importance for such a working class family. Despite the hardships, he never complained, knowing other kids his age had things worse. It wasn't until his teenage years that the world seemed to reinvent himself.
  
  Due to his deposition, Salvatore noticed flaws in the shipping system. Food was arriving spoiled or orders weren't as promised. These lapses hurt the business, something he dealt with firsthand. So, he sought to change that. Without his parent's permission, he began stashing away spare change from the till. Over time, the money added up and eventually was enough to invest in his own truck. At first, his parents were dissatisfied with the purchase. They felt it was a frivolous expense and one that would hurt the family more than it would help. But Salvatore proved them wrong. With his own truck, he started sourcing better products and distributors for the store. Since he was the delivery driver, it cut expenses for the family overall.
  
  Before long, Salvatore was recruited by other people for shipping jobs. His attention to detail and expediency were sought-after traits. It didn't take long for him to stumble upon individuals who had less... legal items to ship. Even then, he didn't turn down business. He needed the money and had no qualms with hiding a few things in shipments. This action was the game changer for his income, as cash began to flow abundantly. In order to diversify his money, he began to invest in more drivers and warehouses to continue the operation under his watchful eye. He eventually bought his parents a small cottage north of the city, helping them get out of the city before they had to see it bow to his knees. As the business got more lucrative, more resources were acquired to keep it afloat. More employees, security, property. You name it, Salvatore's money probably touched it.
  
  At the height of his career was when Margaret Harrington waltzed into his life. She seemed to light a new side of him alive. He hadn't expected to find love, nor did he think he needed it to be happy, but he was sorely mistaken. The children came after, seemingly one after another. Each were wonderfully unique and loved in their own ways. His loving family taught him well in that regard. Despite the bliss of it all, something deep within still yearns for me. An insatiable drive, almost anger at the world for making him work this hard.

  Spontaneous, secretive and entirely impulsive, she seems to jump from idea to idea without any thought or warning leaving others confused in the dust behind her. Fearless by nature, she tends to act quickly on her ideas without taking the time to plan things out rather leaving all her faith in "sheer luck and dumb stupidity". To outsiders Kat seems to be an impulsive mess, however, she has keen observation skills which she has mastered throughout her years and can normally judge a situation in seconds to find the best route of action before jumping in. Whilst she might not always make the best plan she does learn from her mistakes and you can guarantee that she will not make the same mistake twice.

  Kathryn was born on the 22nd April to Benjamin and Rosemary Marino, the second and last child.
  
  Since the day she was born Kathryn was a curious and adventerous soul. In her first few months, Kathryn seemed to need constant movement and poor Rosemary and Benjamin had to obey less Kathryn would scream the house down. As Kathryn began to finally be able to move around on her own it would get easier for her parents but only so far as they no longer had to carry her around, now instead they had a curious toddler walking around the house, climbing presses and trying to get out the front door to explore the world around her. Those who knew her as a baby would say even then she held the same mischievous glint in her eyes that she does now, a tomboy through and through who seemed to always be covered in mud and getting in trouble for climbing a tree or something else she shouldn't be near. She loved her parents dearly but given her tomboyish nature, she was a daddy's girl and he was her idol.
  
  Kathryn's life changed forever when she was only 8 years old. After spending a fun day with her sister and father at the bowling alley she couldn't wait to tell her mother all about how her father had cheated in the game (he had not) but as she ran in the front door a cold sensation filled her body and she knew in that instant something was wrong. Spotting her mother lying on the floor, Kat hesitantly kneeled down beside her as she gently shook her mother to inform her to wake up from her nap and to listen to their stories but she couldn't mistake the coldness of her mother's skin or the bright red blood that seemed to be staining the carpet around them. It felt like hours but in reality it had only been seconds before her father came in behind her and scooped her up into his arms to shield her from the horrific sight in front of her but it was too late, the damage had been done, her mother was dead and that image would forever be scarred into Kat's memory, haunting her every time she closed her eyes.
  
  After her mother's death, Kathryn refused to leave her father alone, constantly following him even in secret (after he had told her to stay put), afraid that he would to meet the same faith as her poor Mother if he was on his own. Standing behind the door and watching intently as her father spoke to her grandparents, Kat listened silently as they appeared to blame her father for what had happened. She wanted to shout at them that he didnt, sure how could he possible have done that when he was bowling with them? but since her father had asked her to stay put in the other room she knew it wasn't a good idea to come forward now, not after breaking his rules.
  
  As time passed Benjamin only got more distant with the girls until he basically seemed to be non-existent in their lives, when he eventually signed up for the War it didn't really make a difference in the girls lives as they never saw him anyway by that stage but on an emotional level it affected Kat way more than she would ever let on.
  
  A dead mother and a father who would rather die in a war than be there for his children, it wouldn't take a rocket science to pick up on Kat's trauma and inner turmoil and it was around this time that she started to act out, sneaking out late, underage drinking, graffiti and reckless vandalism. Unwilling to feel hurt anymore, she shut off her emotions, forgot about her father and filled her days with anarchy and chaos to distract her from her life and that worked for a little while, until her (ANY family member ETC WANNA HELP OUT HERE OPEN) found out and got involved trying to set Kat on a more constructive path than the reckless thug life she had fallen into. Kathryn had always had an inkling around the family business but it was around this time as they tried to focus her attention on more meaningful aspects that Kat really learned the true lives of her family and she was hooked instantly. She knew in that moment she wanted to be apart of this no matter what.
  
  Her father came home from the war a changed man but Kathryn found herself unable to just pretend he hadn't left them instead she was hurt, angry and hated him for making her feel this way. She was snarky, ruthless and down right vindictive at times and the pair seemed to be at each others throats constantly. It took a long time but Kat finally opened up to the idea of being back and giving him a second chance. The anger is almost non-existant now but that doesn't mean she's going to make things easy for him.

  Anastasia was born into relative wealth, but that didn't mean she had it easy. Things started off good and well. Her father owned his own hotel and a number of restaurants in the city. Through his connections and deals, the man knew Salvatore well as both a business associate and a friend. The Marino family had been a part of Anastasia's whole life.
  
  Although her mother did her best for her, the woman wasn't naturally maternal and it pushed Anastasia to being closer to her father.   As the years went on, Anastasia's relationship with her mother rapidly deteriorated, to the point the child felt alone in the family home. Which was better than when her mother was there and somehow blamed the girl for anything that went wrong. This pushed Anastasia closer to the Marino family. Even if they had their own problems and family tensions, it always felt more like home and safer there.
  
  She always stayed close to the Marinos, but as she grew older, tried to build up her own independence. Granted, with the sale of her father's hotel and her inheritance, it was much easier to move into her own place, away from her mother, and to live her own life.
  
  In addition to fashion modelling, she found work as a singer in classy bars and nightclubs. Unfortunately, even the classiest of places attracted unsavoury people. A year ago, one man, Lloyd, became too much of a fan. She grew used to seeing him being there most evenings, but his presence recently become unsettling. With gifts and letters of infatuation and romantic proposals being left at her home, she firmly told the man to stop. When it only continued, she filed a report with the police, which they were quick to dismiss and shrug off as something she needed to deal with herself.
  
  This has made Anastasia become more cautious when out and about. Despite having the backing of her Marino friends, she doesn't want to rely on them too much. Besides, even if she isn't an active part of their criminal affairs, she is aware of enough of what goes on. So the last thing she wants is for them to take extreme measures in dealing with Lloyd on her behalf.

  Elijah was born and raised in Texas. His parents didn't have a lot of money, with his father a farmer and his mother a maid for wealthy families living nearby. He and his older sister, Jane, didn't have much of a childhood themselves. As soon as they could walk and talk they were put to work long hours helping out their parents.
  
  He was 15 when his sister was found brutally murdered. He knew who had killed her, as did most people, but the fact her killer had been the spurned son of the Warner family - one of the richest families in town - meant justice was never brought. Not legally. Two years later, taunted by Jane's killer, Elijah did what he'd wanted to do for a long time and brutally beat the man to death.
  
  Elijah never learned what became of his parents after that, as he fled Texas with the clothes on his back and money he'd stolen from the Warners. As much as he regretted leaving his parents, he knew what fate would await him if he were to stick around.
  
  In the months that followed, Elijah made his way east before eventually settling in New York. He offered his gardening and handyman services for wealthy families, which included the Marino Family, who he took on jobs for ten years ago.   Born on the 23rd of April 1885 in Tokyo, Japan to his parents, Matsuzaki Kame and Kiyabu Naomi, Matsuura was born into an already established Yakuza family. His father ran a tailor shop, a love and passion that Matsuura has continued to this day. From a young age he would watch both of his parents make such fine clothes for people, not realising that the shop was a front, although his father did genuinely enjoy the craft. Everyone he would watch as people came and went from the store, alot of them always wearing the suits his father had made for them. Later on he would learn they were all part of the orginization or buisness partners and so forth. One in particular, a man who was fondly known as "Uncle Kai" taught Matsuura martial arts. For the next few years he would study, learn the craft of making suits, martial arts etc.
  
  Fast forward a few more years to 1920 and Matsuura was now overseeing operations, building a name for himself as head of the family, his parents having retired. He oversaw smuggling in Yokohama Pier, which was a massive part of the families buisness. With a direct link to the US from Yokohama the smuggling trade was doing well. To better boost the trade Matsuura travelled once to New York himself with some of his men. Once there he began to setup operations to expand the family network... and what better way than to open up a Tailor shop, like his father had done before him. Having left a trusted member behind in Tokyo to oversee things there, Matsuura went on to build himself a small group of operations. It was during this time that he met Salvatore Marino, who just so happend to have some warehouses by the docks the ship Matsuura used to transport goods.
  
  It was this fateful meeting that would lead into a beautiful buisness relation and friendship that would grow over the years. As the money rolled in, Matsuura opened up a Japanese restauraunt and later a casino, which was a perfect front for money laundering.   History:
  There was a brief time in his life where someone might have called Patrick "dangerous", and only then when he was operating an airplane. In those days he was a macho asshole who gave no thought to using to discarding people as he rose to prominence in the emerging US financial scene after immigrating in 1890. Hailing from English gentry in Ireland, he was educated, good looking, and had a skill with numbers that few of his peers could match. His family had made its money in the East India trade afterall.
  
  In 1898 the Spanish-American war broke out and like many hot blooded young men he rushed to join up as an artillery officer; his skill with numbers making him a natural. In August of that same year he was deployed as part of the invasion force attacking Puerto Rico. It was here that his easy living and arrogance came to a crashing halt when his battery came under fire from other US forces during the confused fighting. The ammunition cache for the guns exploded during the attack and gravely wounded five officers, Patrick among them.
  
  He was dragged from the wreckage alive, though he would soonn have reason to wish he wasn't. He suffered burns to nearly forty percent of his body and broke his back. Military doctors said he would never walk again but, a year later, he took his first steps with a cane. His right leg would never full heal and the rhythm of his life is punctuated by the Tap Click Drag of the leg being dragged behind him while he walks. Burns to both his hands make it incredibly hard to close them into a fist - he can still hold a pen for minutes at a time - and both feet are slightly duck footed. There are some nights he cannot control his own bowels.
  
  The only bright side during this episode, and likely the only thing that kept him alive, was an unlikely friendship that developed with a local woman who cooked for the wounded soldiers. Maria Ortiz Narvaez always despised the war and the damage it caused, but she had a good heart and was kind to those she met. As the weeks turned into months the two formed a strange friendship and when Patrick finally returned to the USA they continued to exchange letters.
  
  What happened in Puerto Rico erased virtually ever trait that had made Patrick who he was and replaced it with an angry and broken man. Robbed of his good looks and struggling to find some semblance of normal, he had found he was far less popular in his old social circles. Angry and bitter he took what was left of his wealth and moved to New York early in 1902 where he set up a small financial advisor business.
  
  The money poured into America as the war machine rolled full steam ahead. Women had a chance to taste the possibilities of equality, and everyone wanted to make a buck. Despite his injuries and his anger, Patrick still had a quick wit and genius for numbers. Clients got larger, recommended him to more people, and by late 1918 Patrick was a partner at Goldman Sachs.
  
  Shortly afterwards he received a letter from Maria asking if he would be willing to sponsor her and her daughter, Isabela, to come to the continental US. Patrick agreed at once and invited the two women to come and live with him at his large house just a block from Central Park.
  
  Early in 1919 he was approached by the Marino Family to act as their banker and investment broker. On paper the Marinos looked "middle-class" and were hardly worth the time of a high flying financial whizz like Patrick, but Sal Marino quietly explained that his family had some "irregular" streams of profit that provided a nearly limitless commission if Patrick could make those profits legitimate. Patrick didn't skip a beat in agreeing to take them on.

  Vittorio Angelo Marino, often called Vito by family and friends, was born in 1899 as the last child of Salvatore and Margaret Marino in Queens, New York. Vito was always the clown, always trying to make jokes to lighten up a sometimes somber family mood. When Sal and Margaret put Vito into the public school system in the city, Vito quickly found his passion for thuggery and crime.
  
  Vito was not the smartest criminal, often getting into trouble at school and coasting in terms of grades, but he was always useful to the family. Vito did small errands, disposed of incriminating material, and “carried water” for the family. As Vito grew up, he would follow his older brother Frank Marino as he did more complex jobs for the family. Vito could always sense something was odd about Frank, but he could never pin down what that was.
  
  Vito began doing odd jobs for the family once he made it through school in 1915. This involved mostly looking for people, smashing up storefronts and gratuitous property destruction. Vito would become familiar with Paul Woertzel, the family lawyer, who would often get him out of serious trouble.

  Isabela Ramos Ortiz was born to Maria Ortiz Narvaez and Hector Ramos Colón in the newly constructed Presbyterian Hospital in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Her father at the time was an aspiring politician who had married her mother, a vocal young activist, in order to garner more support from the more native Taino descendant communities of PR who deeply felt the absence of their representation while the Spanish colonial descendants like her father ran their small country. Just the year before her birth, the United States had acquired their small island from Spain after the Spanish-American war which had offered her father the perfect opportunity to take a foothold in a new political climate with the Americans.
  
  As she grew, her father had converted their family to Presbyterianism despite her mother’s objections and had enrolled Isabela in a Protestant school where her education was balanced between learning the culture and traditions of her people while learning about their newborn colonial relationship with the United States as well as the language they spoke. Isabela herself is not particularly religious, but she respected both the church her father insisted on attending as well as her mother’s more folk traditions.
  
  From the time she was born, her parents had tried for a second child as her father desperately wanted a son to carry on his name and legacy as his only perceived value for his daughter was through a favorable marriage. Her mother suffered through three miscarriages before her father abandoned her for another woman when she was just 6 years old. By the time she turned 7, her father’s mistress had borne him a son and thus started the long painful seperation of her parents and her deep seated hatred towards her father, men who cheated on their wives, and the women who knowingly seek out married men - especially those in higher social circles.
  
  From the age of 7 to 17, Isabela spent most of her time with her mother in their separate home from their father in San Juan. His infidelity, which did not take long to be made public, eventually faded from scrutiny and both Maria and Isabela were simply referred to as his estranged wife and daughter. They were unable to divorce due to political, societal, and religious pressures, but as the process became more common, her father became more persistent in getting her mother’s consent to their legal separation so that he could marry his mistress and legitimize his son. Maria eventually agreed to the divorce on the premise that they wait to finalize it until Isabela graduated from school and he provided them with enough money to start a new life in the United States.
  
  Her graduation coincided with the signing of the Jones-Shafroth Act which granted citizenship to all Puerto Ricans and was the sign for Maria to have both Isabela and herself leave the country and join the massive migration to New York. Isabela’s father had followed through on his promise of providing them with enough money for them to start a new life however Isabela was surprised to hear from her mother that they would use the money to start up a small business in the US as she had secured them housing with an old friend. During their journey to New York, Maria had prepared Isabela to meet Patrick Harper and filled her in on her relationship with the foreign man who had been gracious enough to open his home to them. Upon entering the country, Isabela dropped her father’s surname and carried her maternal surname with pride as simply ‘Isabella Ortiz’.
