The Reunion: Iris and Ajax

It was a quiet spring day in this quiet town that sat bustled into the foothills of forests. Flowers bloomed brightly upon the ground, and the leaves rustled whimsically in the trees that towered above them. The people of the towns bustled along quietly, everyone seemed in good spirits. It was a Saturday and the rays of sunshine were complimented with a polite breeze. Smells of the local bakery and cafe swirled around the air.. and then there was the smell of burning tobacco. And who was it coming from?

Sitting alone in what would look like a pool of apathy was a man. An expensive pair of black glasses covered his thick lashed silver eyes. His pupils dialated as he adjusted his vision to the bright sun when looking over his glasses into the street far away. He was tall, slender, and had an ivory complexion that caused him to stand out of the average crowd. He wore a white button up shirt that remained casually unbuttoned on his chest. His heart was racing, but he couldn't allow anyone to see that. Upon his legs were black slacks that his fingers occasionally twitched at nervously.

From the outside he appeared most confident. On this inside his nerves were riled. His name was Ajax Belguard. Ex Agent of a prior government corporation that he had left over six months ago. Six months ago he had asked her to come with him. But yet again she had refused. After a passionate fight he left. Vowing to never go back. To not waste his heart trying anymore. But then one day he got that text message... from her. She hadn't said what she was up to..so typical of that god damned stubborn woman. She said she wanted to meet up with him. Ajax dropped everything he had been building up to and arranged a visit in this town.

He scheduled this meeting to be at a cafe instead of a bar. Sitting there for the past hour had made him regret that. But he wanted to appear as...adult..as possible for her. Ajax Belguard was a changed man.. calm.. collected.. self assured..

"Sir-" a womans voice interrupted his positive thoughts, " Would you mind not smoking? Its bad for the environment and I don't want my children around it!" A smug looking woman scolded him, holding the hand of a fat bored little boy who ate a icecream that dripped messily everywhere.

Ajax stood to his feet," I'm sorry..."he said smoothly, running his hands through his silver shaggy hair. He strolled casually over to her, taking a long drag and blew a large cloud in her face," You must have not noticed that you can walk your little pig on the other side of the street. Or i'm sorry that you're a dumb enough bitch to think I fucking care about you, or your opinions." he smirked, looking at her devilishly over his gleaming sunglasses.

The woman coughed, and shuffled down the street in fear.

Yes..Ajax was definitely a new man.

New barely meant better. Witnessing Ajax's interaction with the female stranger made the stoic ex-agent walk the opposite way. However, she was already here, out of the corporation. A new life was about to begin, and she feared the worst. Call it separation anxiety but the bright lights and loud noises made her want to take refuge back to where she live: underground like a the rodent that Rogue always tried to tell her. Her breathing became rather erratic; she may have ditched her formal R&D uniform and dressed down to blend in but she felt every layer of her clothes sinking and sticking onto her skin. Was the weather too hot to her liking or was the crowding overstimulating her brain. She couldn't even step into the coffee shop; stares in a foreign land made her so uncomfortable. Although covered, she felt her skin burning. Even with sunglasses, the sun was still glaring down at her. This must be some kind of mistake, Iris repeated--yet it didn't stop her from approaching Ajax.

Her strides were confident nonetheless, but her shifty eyes suggesting anything but calmness. Her hand reached out and gripped on Ajax's shirt. She didn't even dare to look at him. She didn't want to see what reaction he carried. "Let's not stay here for long," the woman breathed out weakly. There was no reason for her to speak so quietly. No one would ever suspect what their background was. "And you should apologize to the woman," Iris continued, frowning at the pale haired man.

His ego was still basking in the hatred his body had flung at the woman and child. His smirk remained firmly on his handsome face noticing the woman's reaction caused an effect on the rest of the passing crowd. As if a force field was around him, the crowd bubbled away from him. In the corner of his vision he noticed a short woman walking his way.. but it wasn't until he heard her voice did it truly hit who it was.

Her touch caused him to inhale sharply and jump ever so subtly. The electricity in his body raced through his blood. The lights flickered on and off violently all down the street. He gazed softly down at her. Her beautiful face just the way he remembered it. The violent smirk faded into a small pout of a smile. Ajax couldn't help as his hand raised gently to her cheek raising her glasses with the tip of his fingers. "Jesus.."he muttered," It took you long enough to show up." he teased her.

Ajax noticed the tension in her body. The anxiety in her eyes that refused to look at him. "Not used to the daylight, you little lab rat?" he continued to poke fun,"Alright. Lets go." he grabbed her hand and gave her an impolite jerk as he took a turn down a quiet alley behind the cafe,"And I don't even know what an apology is, Iris. You know that." he stated firmly as they entered a quieter area of the city. The alley was short leading into a small park that lined against a river.

Remain calm, Ajax... But he could swear his heart was going to explode. And he felt he had no weight in his body.

"You despicable...jerk."

Lab rat had to be that one insult that grated her last nerves and probably convinced her that leaving rogue was indeed the worst mistake she's committed. He had no idea the weight of such connotation. He would soon learn if she found a better timing to talk about it--if she learned to trust him. His vexing touch nearly made the paling woman scowl. With much reluctance, she curled her fingers and held into warm hand. "I advise you to start learning. We're no longer where we used to be." she commented taking note of the contrast of their body temperature.

With a park and river she frowned. Such sight was unfamiliar to her. And it brought no comfort to her. Iris stayed closer to Ajax--more than she wanted to. "Do you live nearby?" There were children in sight--which meant more source for Ajax to aggravate. Better yet, "Why here?" They meant to blend in and it was expected that Ajax would avoid secluded places to live but it never occurred to her the other may like this change of setting. It was like meeting a different man and she wasn't sure to recognize him anymore.

In the moment of weakness, she gave into a quick hug. "Thank you, for answering the call." She knew for a fact she wouldn't have returned the favour.

And so it began.

Her words and actions were so...cold. His amusement furthered, and yet he felt a strong nagging irritation building up. Some things just did not change between the two. Nor did he ever expect them to.

Ajax released her hand quickly as she put him up to date on where they stood in their current relationship,"And where were before, Iris? I bet you couldn't even answer that for me. Because.."he smirked cruelly,"I haven't even been able to figure that one out. And I have thought about it quite often." Was he being bitter? Perhaps. After all he was never known to contain his emotions well. Especially not in the times Iris was involved.

He turned his back on her noticing how uncomfortable with the scenery she was. His fists balled tightly. "No.. I don't live here." he said his voice monotone now.. his eyes observed the same children playing in the background that she had noticed. Unlike Iris was thinking--they did not inspire his rage and irritation. To his own confusion it had sparked a vision that he wanted in his future with Iris. He knew that was unobtainable. He shook his head and rubbed his forehead,"I thought you would like it here... It has very pleasant reviews on the internet.." his voice stopped as he felt her arms wrap around his waist.

Ajax stooped lower and lifted her

“Don’t bash the only place that has accepted you for what you are.” Which was not entirely a human. Civilians feared people like Ajax and her. They were no more than tools struggling to find their place in the corrupt world.

If the other plotted to kill last bit of Iris’ sanity, he was succeeding. She knew better to feed his amusement but her slip-up was not done on purpose. Where the woman was out of her element, Ajax had the advantage of the game. But here wasn’t his territory either. Ajax found no pleasure in calling the corporation home but that’s what it was to the raven haired woman. Despite all the mistreatment, it was her home, her security blanket. The last mental statement changed as the electricity manipulator brought her to his arms.

Iris didn’t know that internet was still popular in a quasi-post-apocalyptic place. “Oh? Is that were you’ve been hanging out lately?” He did well to put her down because she could have bit the man’s lips. Though it would never encourage him to think twice before joking, it would bring back some kind of satisfaction seeing him frown just as much as she was.

“You know they won’t let you breath peacefully for long,” she warned him. Seeing him uncharacteristically happy made her sigh in defeat. “At least you found some ease in this setting.” She wasn’t sure how children playing in the park were any comforting to her. It was a foreign impression but Ajax’s eyes told another story—one which she couldn’t understand. “Do you know anyone here?”

Ajax Belguard

His face twisted in an expression of boredom as she made a point about ROGUE corp. Although it had been a prison to him. It was also his only home. Where his temper..his loss of control and his abilities were of no surprise to any of his co-workers..and friends. Friends. He thought back on the few he had.. but the most important of the group was standing in front of him. Ajax's face returned to being blank as he looked away from her. He couldn't look at her. He had so many things to say. Didn't she know that the only home he had ever had, especially since the loss of his brother, was her? But he knew as soon as he said that to her he would get a scolding and possibly a slap to the face.

He heard slight amusement in her voice as she poked fun back at him. He looked back at her and pushed his sunglasses back into his hair.

/You know they won’t let you breath peacefully for long../ her words rang in small echoes in his mind. She was right. ROGUE Corp never really let anyone get away. He knew that they would find them. Especially if it was just to find Iris again. The thought didn't scare him..it exhausted him. He reached into his pocket and pulled a small black cellphone from his pocket.

"No Iris. I don't know anyone here. Nor has it made me find peace. I'll show you where brings me comfort, and I know no one." with that he wrapped his arm around her waist and pushed a button,"Close your eyes. We're teleporting." and with that a giant gust of wind and light hit them.

Upon opening their eyes they stood in Ajax's apartment. He was proud of it. Outside it was dark and raining. The view suggested he lived at the top of a sky scraper that overlooked the city. Although the apartment was clean.. the counters were lined with empty liquor bottles. And a single ashtray was overflowing on his counter.

"I borrowed this from ROGUE, pretty convenient, don't you think?" He commented calmly looking at the teleporting remote. With that he turned her towards a wall covered in sketches and maps. Data and calculations. "Since, I know they will be looking for it..as well as you and I...I am making a way for us to get out of here." he said as he crossed his arms, taking a step towards it.

"Space travel."

Iris Huang

There was no easy read in Ajax’s mind without intruding his mind with her powers and it bothered her. They never thought in the same wavelength. Stiffness was recognized in the transparency of his eyes. She didn’t mean to kill the buzz. His drive relied entirely on idealistic concepts whereas she saw nothing but doom and unnecessary sacrifices before her. While Huang was racked in paranoid and stress, the other became more proactive with the situation. Iris was thankful of his decisiveness. However, it remained something that was left unvoiced.

The sight of the familiar black device drew a frown on her features. Teleporting? No protest came as Ajax activated the remote and teleported them else—a much better place: closed space. Ironically, confinement made it breathable. It was dark and raining. The mood was gloomy. Monochrome—much like Ajax’s attire. With a change of setting, a new form of overstimulation greeted them. The smell of strong liquor and tobacco was almost too nauseating. Giving herself a moment to get used to it, her gray gaze fell on the maps displayed on the wall.

“The facility fell, Belguard. Not just that one, several others did. Agents are running loose and only a few loyalists are trying to gather what’s left of the collision. There is no more Rogue Corp. not for now at least.”

She fell silent and examined his work. They could stay under the radar for a while. Space travelling may delay the inevitable. Whether to be impressed or just stupefied that Belguard went in length was still debatable. Her fingers tapped on the material on the wall and read into them. Psychometry at its’ finest. When her announcement sunk in, Iris continued. “You should burn that,” Iris advised. Paper made them less traceable, but any electronic device remained as a GPS. Unless Ajax learned to find some blind spot and cause some sort of interference with the signals. “Memorize it if you must.”

She turned around to see a relatively proud ex-agent. “Don’t get ahead of yourself.” She pressed her index finger on his forehead, pushing his head backwards just a tad. “The work is sloppy.” Just looking at the scattered bottles said as much. "I didn't choose to be here to be your cleaning maid."

The tall ex-agent tilted his head down towards Iris in subtle surprise,"Rogue Corp...has fallen?"his smooth voice became quiet. Certainly at time he had mused that it could happen. The corporation had many flaws. Perhaps the largest of all flaws was underrating some of the agents they so forcefully "recruited". Despite that Ajax found ROGUE to be airtight in its flawlessness. But it seemed even they could not hold structure in these dark and powerful times.

As he contemplated to himself he also surveyed Iris's reactions to his apartment. Huang stayed generally unemotional. So refined was she, that only in the slightest flicker of her grey eyes and a slight tightening of her pouty lips suggested that she was not amused by the messiness of his apartment. Ajax smirked to himself watching her hair cascade softly across her face as she turned her head to observe his grand scheme that was broadcasted across the wall of his home.

You should burn it... Ajax closed his eyes as a scoff came from him," Just burn it? I have been working on this for three years. Everything at this point in perfected.. And mostly memorized." It was true. Shortly before he left ROGUE the plan had entered his mind. One sad and drunk day, he was going through Cillians belongings. A lot of notebooks he had left unread. Too heartbroken to read the words of his deceased brother.. until one day. Belguard remembered smiling to himself as he noticed Cillian had drew a chibi version of him and Ajax on a rocket ship in space on the front of blue notebook. Tears welled as Ajax opened it..and then his eyes widened..

Upon the first time he left, between his own adventures and information gathering he had formulated over half of this plan. And since the most recent time he left..he had spent every day..almost every hour drinking and creating. Erasing. Studying. And finally.. it was almost perfect.

His thickly lashed eyes slowly open as her cold finger pressed against his hot forehead. There was an ominous glow burning within them as he gazed down at Iris. "I would never ask you to be my maid...although,"he teased gently,"It has been a fantasy of mine before. One I use quite often." he grabbed her regal hand between his two large ones and slowly lowered to his knees. Looking up at her there was a sense of seriousness to him that was rarely seen. It was likely she had only seen it a few times before when the ex-agent was ready to die in battle for ROGUE..if that is what it took at the time..

"Iris. I need your help. And I want you to come with me. You know i'm sloppy and I can't control myself most of the time. Without ROGUE in this world, it is left unprotected. There are a lot of forces that will take advantage of this. Rogue will get greedy and send the remaining agents they have into a blood bath, or terminate those who are not with them... I could give a shit about this world. But I am proposing that we do something about this. It is likely that other agents have already found there way into different galaxies and planets. I don't have a plan... maybe we can find others to fight and come back to this world..maybe we can just run away. But something needs to be done. And it needs to be done now."

He needed her. And not just for himself this time.

"All the more to rid of it," Huang sighed out. The pale woman disregarded his emotional attachment to the physical mappings. Perhaps it was a mental effort to block out any jealousy towards a deceased. Cillian was a respectable agent, as an individual as well. In the few moments she did spend with the individual were pleasant ones--moments that promised less irritation and frustration, unlike with his twin brother, Ajax Belguard.

Perfection being articulated by Ajax was almost unsettling but his dedication towards a passion rarely made the conception of flawlessness improbable. She knew better than to undermine his hard word; she saw some vulnerability in his eyes. The source for the cause eluded her however. or... rather, Ajax distracted her with his signature teasing. As per usual, the only response the woman gave the other with a frown and an unamused stare. Her lips parted to retort but Belguard knelt. Her displeased expression faded to a blank one. The weight of his words worried her. What he said held validity. There was a larger danger at the horizon and being pro-active would be the solution to the problem. Almost hesitantly, her eyes drift to the side. Ajax had a noble heart but was he not the one who resented ROGUE Corp.? The disappearance of the facilities was the beginning of a true chaos. And... she was on a different page; she care very little for other's well-being. It was all about survival but Ajax made her realize it was wrong to be on that track of mind.

Iris crouched and moved her hand to caress his cheek. Her gaze never met his; just thinking about where and how to even start looking for agents sounded like a larger than life project. Then there were limitations of resources. And the power of psychometry. Her abilities were rusty but those were the least of her worries. What troubled her was psychic powers overlapping and the switch staying on permanently. By that time, she may not be able to hear the man's teasing anymore. Breathing out, she looked back at Ajax. Slowly, Iris leaned in to wrap her arms around him. His determination and resolve was above all. She'll just worry about it when the time came. Her embrace tightened, making sure to remember how his warmth felt like before the beginning of the end may come. "To organize what's left of this place, there needs to be a re-establishment of Rogue. You're fully aware of that? Having to co-operate with the same people you dislike? If you're fully aware of the risks, then it's worth a try."

Huang pulled away but her hands still remained draped on his shoulders. "I'm assuming your safe-houses are also searching landmarks?" She searched for the next destination marked on the wall, taking her turn to memorize the plan as well. The sooner they can start the reunion operation, the better.

Iris's sweet embrace caused Ajax's eyes to widen and then narrow in a soft gaze. Her aroma was delicate and yet so sublime to him. So tempting was it to pick her up and take her to his bedroom. If only she would let him. He leaned his face into the curve of her neck for the embrace. Touching his hot skin to her cool and pale skin. He would simply enjoy this moment. Again.. it had been too long since he had felt her embrace. For now, he would take simple comfort in that.

Ajax sighed bitterly as she mentioned getting back on good terms with ROGUE Corp. He stood up, causing her relaxing hands to drag down to his mid chest. "Why must I always have to try and be friends with them, Iris?" he inquired discontentedly. He wanted her loyalties to lie with him, but it always appeared that work with ROGUE would always come first for Huang. Running his hand through his hair, he then reached into his pocket for a pack of cigarettes. He opened the box once he found them...empty. Grumbling to himself he walked towards the wall of plans.

"Fine. You are right... Are you in touch with any of the agents?"He asked looking over his shoulder at her. His eyes stoic. Although pouty, he knew she was correct. In fact it was almost a requirement. They offered many resources. "We are going to have to find someone who knows how to navigate space. That is our first step. I have a couple in mind. Our first stop is going to the city trade center. Not the classiest place.. but we've seen worse."

Ajax wandered over to the wall of plans. And pressed a few buttons on what appeared as a thermostat on the wall. Suddenly his plans and work began to fade away, as if the ink on the paper was being sucked through the wall. And then it was gone. The fidgeting continued until he turned around and held up what appeared to be an elegant silver necklace with a small and simply pearl adorning it. He quietly walked behind her and put it around Iris's neck,"This is a USB. It has everything we need. And I need you to hold onto it." with those words spoken he clipped it together and stepped back.

"First peace of jewelry I have ever given you... and it holds the possible key to saving this shit planet." he smirked and got out the teleporting device,"Ready, Huang?"

Ajax was annoyed again. The expression his face carried said as much. She became frustrated at her turn; why would he try to bring personal matters into business matters? Did he not learn that both rarely mixed well. Also, friendship and cooperation were two entirely different things. One can co-exist with another but they functioned well independently. Before Iris could protest, Belguard gave into her point of view. Rationality should hardly be disregarded and it was pleasant to hear that he agreed. His explanation was acknowledge with a nod but her eyes never met with his. The silver haired man had been busy. Considering his personality, Iris imagined that he associated with the worst type. Fortunately, dealing with the worst types was right in their zone. "We'll manage," the woman reassured... depending on who would do the talking. Like many other agents who she was on good terms, Ajax was protective of her. Maybe they accord her some an emotional importance. Often, it came off as Iris needed protection or held the typical title of a damsel in distress. Whichever it was, it did aggravate the psychic.

On her feet again, she watched Ajax's back for a moment. Tilting her head to the side, as if she was looking at him from a different angle, she did noticed a different aura about him. It was strange. It wasn't comforting though, especially since she couldn't describe how she felt. Brushing the thought away, Huang waited for the other to come closer again. Her hand grazed it over the pearl and eventually she hid the dainty necklace under her shirt. Offering him a soft smile, she replied, "I'll take care of it. Thank you. Though, don't make it the last gift either." It was an open interpretation. There was something she had always been weak to and it was jewelry. She still wore Justice's gift on her neck--same with Eli's watch. Leaning closer to the taller male, she linked arms with him. Last he operated the device, a contact was made.

Though, don't make it the last gift either...her smooth words filled his ears. Feeling her link arms with him he gave her a sly wink. The teleporting device was once again removed from his pocket. And again they were gone. Ticking away in Ajax's apartment was the "thermostat" the ex-agent had removed the USB from. 3, 2, 1...The penthouse apartment exploded abruptly . The night sky blazed gloriously. The rain lit up like strips of gold.

The two landed on a crowded street. Ajax winced at the sunlight and put his sunglasses once again over his grey eyes. A giant dirty banner spelled "THE PORT" whipped in the wind over the city. It was obviously fitting. The terrain seemed strange. It appeared to be a desert city they stood in, but in the horizon the ocean manifested into the distance. Once again Iris and Ajax contrasted in appearance. Clean and dignified. The rest of the crowd appeared bustling away. Dirty from the dust. It was obviously more or not a pirate town. Boats putted away the distance while...space ships flew up and into the sky.

"Here we are... Apparently the best spot to meet some space captain asshole is the bar and inn called Cloud Landing no.1. From what I got from it, a lot of bounty hunters, people needing money, or trying to fulfill causes are there. If we find the latter, we are golden. I doubt good people out there exist, but this is kind of where you come in. Recruiting is kind of your thing. " Ajax spoke his thoughts out loud. He removed his arm from Iris's and draped it gently over her shoulders as they walked towards to water. His vision analyzed the crowd. The electricity flickered intensely through his veins. There was a lot of tension in the air..and he felt all of it.

Using his peripheral vision he admired Iris's beauty..but most importantly her bravery. Something that few people truly had.
