OOC:
Several villages near the base of the Paizu Mountains have reported to have been the victims of raids brought upon their crops and food storages. Originally done during the night in secrecy, the raids have been growing bolder, with recent conflicts resorting further into violence and even attempts of arson. The assailants responsible are reported to be by a gang of rowdy simianfolk, however any attempts to locate their hideout have so far ended in failure. Upon the latest of these victims was that of Garagol Village, a quiet establishment sitting right at the southern base of these massive mountains. On behalf of the nearby villages afflicted by the raids, the elder of Garagol had requested assistance from the Adventures Guild to help with the investigation and potential arrest of said gang.

It was a chilly late morning at the base of the Paizu Mountains. Beneath the towering trees scraping the gray overcast skies, nestled beside the gentle sounds of the flowing river, Garagol Village stands as a testament against the beautiful yet harsh valley. Even against the recent cold spell's harsh winds coming from the mountains themselves do the villagers continue going about their daily tasks and obligations. It was peaceful for the most part. The houses were old and had seen its share of wear and tear, but had generally well-kept interiors that made for a cozy living space. By the rivers edge, a watermill creaks gently as the wooden boards dip up and down the lapping waters with a steady pace. And across it via a small wooden bridge, a lush meadow made it the perfect location for farmers to grow their crops with an assortment of fields growing different crops...

That was until recently.

The once lush and perfect fields were now littered with trampled paths and flattened circles. A significant majority of vegetables and wheat had been forcibly taken out, some of which seeming as if they'd been sloppily cut by a sharp blade or ripped out by sheer strength alone. One field looked to have been scorched completely by a recent fire, despite not being a signs of any wildfires recently. It was as if it been purposely, or accidentally, scorched by something or someone. As the farmers attempted to repair the damage out in the fields, the rest of the villagers within the town went about their business as usual, despite their moods not being at their highest. Most of the locals here were of beastkin origin, a standard sight seen in the Republic, comprised of various different species and wearing modest if not worn-down tunics and clothing. A few humans, elves, and orcs could also be seen in the background, though they were of the minority here.

23c5f6dd11d383fd42b721690147f5d0.jpg

Standing atop the hill, looking over the pastures by what looked to be the village center, an elderly Capri could be seen grasping his staff with a solemn expression on his face as he talked to several villagers. While his horns were long and curved, his eyes were small and beady being covered by white shaggy eyebrows of lush wool. He looked quite tried but diligently propped himself as accommodating to the needs of the others. Given the description by the request paper seen in the Adventurer's Guild, he looked to be the village elder.

Just the person you needed to report to...

Somewhere along the path to the mountainous region -- one would catch sight of a shorter young woman walking along. Her clothes featured bits and bobs of armor -- yet she was no knight. Her appearance of clothes hid bits of armors interwoven into her clothes -- making it less protective and yet lighter. More fit for traversing long distances and performing nimble evasions. She marched along the beaten path of the Paizu Mountains -- land of beasts, with an almost perpetual smile on her face. She sang and walked in steady cadence, occassionally skipping whenever she reached a high note.

In contrast on her back was an enormous sword -- large enough that it didn't really seem possible for her to wear it on her hip. The blade seemed to host metallic edge and yet had components comprised of what one could swear were scales and gems. A close examination of the metal, and one could see even a scale like pattern that had taken it up. The blade looked almost like it had components which were organic. One could say despite appearing dead, it looked almost to be alive. A single gem sat in the center of it. Was the sword looking around? Or was it a trick of the eye?

It sat quietly in it's sheath, as the young woman carrying sang and marched.

♪ "I may fallllllll

But not like this!

It won't be by your hand!

I may fa-" ♪

A gasp as something came into view. Her hand was placed just above her eyes to block out any sunlight. She stood on her tippy-toes to get a good glance a at some structures off in the distance. And indeed, her eyes did not deceive her.

"We've made it!" She said, despite the fact that nobody was around her.

"I mean....I've made it. Damn it Len." She chastised herself briefly, before she jogged forward at a steady pace with a smile on her face. She made into the village in no time, taking in the sight of beasts, humans and orcs living together in relative harmony. She had never seen so many beasts around since before entering the "Republic." And despite the mundane nature of the village -- she looked about in wonder at the humble looking area.

However, her smile would slowly wane away as she came to look at the desecrated crops. Her background had only taught her the ways of nobility and of combat. However -- she didn't need to be a farmer to tell crops weren't supposed to look like this.

Off in the distance, she saw an old goat. The old capri would hear a soft pitter patter upon the grass.

"Judging by these crops, I'd I'm in the right place." She took a deep breath, filling her lungs as she prepared to speak. The smile upon her face would return. With a voice both strong and cheerful she declared herself before the Capri and everyone around frankly.

"My name is Lenara Alstadt!" Her fist slams onto her chest, right over her heart. "But you can call me Len for short! I'm here for a request from the Adventurer Guild to deal with some foul raider!! Who seem to have nothing better to do then to pick on hard working villagers!!" Her hand shot out, becoming a blur before stopping in front of the Capri's face.

"A pleasure to meet you! Would I be correct in assuming you to be this village wise leader...?" She asked, her voice trailing off and finally becoming quieter as she asked a question with a deliberate hint of uncertainty. Her eyes scanned the faces around her for a brief moment, before returning to the Elder.

"N-No! Please! I beg of you!"

The man wore the crest of the Adventurer's Guild. Kong had seen it many times emblazoned somewhere on the uniforms of people who were sent to kill him. They came with weapons and magic, seeking to end him for gold or experience. He grew wise to their cruelty. They fought him in large groups. Sometimes they were successful. Sometimes he fell to their combined weakness parading as strength.

He despised them, more than anything, those Isekaiers and travelers who flaunted their power earned through trial and error instead of the natural order. It was like watching gambling addicts winning through sheer weight of attempts rather than any admirable luck or charm. He gritted his teeth together as the man pleaded for his life.

He shared not a single word as he crushed him with his warclub, grinding him like dirt until the screaming stopped and his lungs emptied themselves of air. He exhaled slowly. How many times had he been beaten by groups of these weaklings? Their combined strength was nothing compared to what the true justice of the world could be. It was a wild economy of pathetic creatures all vying for their pathetic little thrones they would abandoned immediately after something else new and shiny came along.

Loot. Valuables. Possessions. Kong hated all of it. He was famed as a bandit, but he only stole what he needed to survive. He couldn't stand anything frivolous. People sometimes mistook that as generosity, paving the way for the weak and downtrodden by exterminating centers of wealth and prosperity. But then that mistake would be rectified once he cycled back around, erasing where the weak prospered in those same cultural flashpoints.

Again and again, like a raging storm, a relentless earthquake, and a hateful tsunami, he rode the boundaries of fate and destiny. He would never break it. He never could. He was bound to his own hatred of the world and the systems that defined it. Yet, curiosity never died in his heart. He plucked the corpse from his warclub and inspected it, intent on finding something to eat - if not the corpse itself.

His prying eyes landed on a flier, an advertisement for the Adventurer's Guild. He did not catch sight of his own name, nor orders for his demise.

Instead, the man he killed was selected as part of a pilgrimage to hunt down other bandits in the area that did not owe allegiance to Kong. He shouldered his warclub and pressed it against his chest, digging into the corpse's armored torso with one hand and his thigh with the other. With a solid ripping motion, he plucked the leg cleanly from the hip socket. He dug into the flesh with his teeth, chewing slowly and deliberately.

The man's flesh was good and chewy, marbled through a somewhat spoiled upbringing. Kong took what he needed to fill his belly and threw the rest into a nearby clump of trees for the scavengers. He cleaned what blood clung to his face in a river between two rice paddies. Afterwards, he made a clear path towards where the parchment directed him.

As he arrived where an apparent gathering was happening, he noticed a woman speaking to what seemed to be the village Elder. Kong didn't say anything and instead tapped his clavicle with a blunt side of his warclub.

He hadn't masqueraded as an adventurer yet. This was perhaps the only time he would as well. He didn't want to stoop to the same levels as the creatures he so despised, the ones who were only strong when they were in large groups like ants.

That extended, of course, to people like the raiders who were terrorizing people who had no say in the direction their lives took.

"They're not even fighting for what they believe in... it's childish," he snarled.

"Only cowards run from vindication,"

Samantha Nag'hagalgrim

Samantha's transcendence journey certainly took a turn these last few days.

After being exposed by a weak-minded scholar that couldn't handle the gift of knowledge, her laboratory was wrecked and burned, and her life was taken from her. As her flesh burned, instead of joining her collaborators in screaming in agony, Samantha started calling for the ones above. For the Beyonders. Bystanders couldn't handle it. Their faces locked on her, unable to process what they were witnessing. Samantha didn't care, she just continued talking to them, to take her from her weak vessel. Her voice grew weak as the burning became more intense.

And then there was nothing.

When Samantha opened her eyes, she found herself in a distant land, much different from hers. But what shocked her the most wasn't the vastly different culture, technology and social structure. No. It was her. While her knowledge of the cosmos disappeared almost in its entirety, her body had changed. She was not only younger, but also had white hair, a pale skin, and crimson eyes now. Could it be? This new world was another rung in the ladder to transcendence? Sadly she was not able to tell.

Samantha had to begin her research from scratch. Reach the cosmos of this new world she was reincarnated in. And having learned from her mistakes, her openness on her discoveries would be lower, more subtle, but still present. She needed to make it visible for those who looked, small discoveries that masked her true progress.

But that's for later.

For now, she needed to get back in top shape, both physically and mentally. And what better way than with taking a quest for an adventure?

Having found the village mentioned in the request, she wandered around, looking for the elder to fill her in on the details of the task ahead. Lucky her, she noticed the massive ape standing near a capri and an innocent looking girl. Quite the crew, if she said so herself. With her trusty Infant Blade slung over her shoulder, she calmly approached. "Good day, folks." Not feeling the need to ask anything currently, she left it at that.

(Nothing of the sort comes to mind. Any kind of growth is welcomed)

Karmilla "The Peddler" Kerberos

1735475824138.png

Karmilla yawned, the slow rhythm of the horse’s hooves against the dirt road a soothing monotony. She reclined on the driver’s seat of her goods-filled carriage, one hand lazily spinning one of her blades while the other tipped her wide-brimmed cowboy hat in casual acknowledgment to the occasional passerby. One of her guns was strapped securely to her back, while the other rested within easy reach beside her, its polished surface glinting faintly in the sunlight.

The past months had been a dull haze, and boredom had taken its toll. Word of a nearby quest had reached her ears—a tantalizing opportunity to break the monotony. She figured it was time to stretch her legs, sharpen her skills, and make sure her aim hadn’t grown dull. After all, what better practice was there than live targets?

The gathering of adventurers came into view, and Karmilla guided her horse to a stop, parking the carriage neatly to the side. She hopped down with a fluid motion, her boots hitting the ground with a satisfying crunch. She strapped her twin blades to her hips and swung her gun onto her shoulder with a practiced ease that spoke volumes of her familiarity with it. She wore a torn khaki cloak, covering most of her body-- beneath it she wore what outer-worlders would probably call a 'bikini'.

Howdy’,” she drawled, her voice calm but carrying an edge of mischief as her sharp eyes swept over the forming group. The faintest smirk tugged at her lips as she adjusted her hat.

  • Is-Black-Swan-worth-pulling-in-Honkai-Star-Rail.jpg

Astraea Nox had not planned on finding herself in Garagol Village. The journey here had been, much like the rest of her second life, entirely accidental. She had boarded a carriage in hopes of heading toward the bustling city of Ryke, a place she believed would hold answers about this vibrant, untamed world into which she had been reborn. Yet, her lack of familiarity with local geography—and the driver's indifference to her quiet correction—had landed her far from her intended destination. Instead of the sprawling metropolis she had envisioned, Astraea now stood amidst a humble village cradled by the imposing Paizu Mountains.

The scene before her was as alien as it was picturesque. Beneath the gray, overcast skies, the rustic charm of Garagol Village unfolded like a tapestry woven from quiet resilience. The timber-framed houses, weathered but warm in their construction, exuded a sense of lived-in comfort that contrasted sharply with the unforgiving chill in the air. The steady creak of a watermill by the river provided a rhythmic backdrop, while the rolling fields—once lush and fruitful—now bore the scars of recent destruction. Astraea's golden eyes, still glowing faintly with an otherworldly light, scanned the flattened crops and scorched patches with a growing sense of unease. The damage spoke not of natural misfortune, but of deliberate ruin.

Her appearance, as always, drew quiet stares from the villagers she passed. Her silver hair cascaded down her back like liquid starlight, and the elaborate purple and silver garb she wore only added to her ethereal, almost otherworldly aura. It was not the kind of outfit suited to such a modest settlement, but it was all she had been given upon her rebirth. Her ornate deck of tarot cards, tucked safely within their sleek case at her side, was her constant companion, though she had refrained from using them since her arrival in this new world. Astraea did not want to be seen as an oracle or a seer here. She did not wish to wield fate as she once had. All she wanted was understanding—a grasp of this strange world and her place within it.

Drawn by the murmurs of gathered voices, Astraea climbed the gentle slope leading to the village center. There, at the crest of the hill, she saw him: an elderly Capri with long, curved horns and an air of quiet authority. He stood leaning on a well-worn staff, his shaggy white wool stirring faintly in the mountain breeze as he listened intently to the concerns of the villagers. Astraea hesitated, her delicate features clouded with uncertainty. She had not come here to offer aid. She had not come here for anything at all. And yet, as her gaze drifted back to the ruined fields and the anxious farmers below, a pang of guilt and obligation settled over her. She could not simply walk away.

Steeling herself, Astraea adjusted the strap of her case and descended the hill toward the elder. She approached with measured steps, her mind already working to frame her purpose. Surely someone in this village could offer her insight into this world, its history, its customs, its people. The elder, with his wisdom and central role in the community, seemed her best hope for answers. Yet as she neared the group, she found herself drawn into the tense undercurrent of the villagers' discussion. Their voices wove a tapestry of worry—of ruined harvests, mysterious fires, and mounting fears for the future.

Before she could voice her own questions, Astraea realized she had stumbled into a role she had not sought.

The old goat's furry ears flickered as he heard the soft yet eager footsteps of someone approaching him. However while he would've turned to face her, his attention was still occupied with the concerned villagers who were begging for his attention. They asked for his guidence regarding what to do next following their recent raid. Farmers needed compensation for their ruined crops. Guards wanted vengeance for a fallen comrade. And the nearby innocent villagers around them simply wanted any and all updates on the situation. It was all terribly stressful to deal with, even for someone as wise and experienced like the old goat elder. Aside from what he had told them, he merely urged that they wait for help and that they should be here soon.

The newcomer's bold introduction startled several of the nearby villagers, causing heads to swivel straight at the woman calling herself Lenara Alstadt. There were stares from those getting their bearings alongside those who interpreted her approach as being rather rude. Yet the goat elder smiled. With a flick of his staff followed by an urgent murmur, the villagers would begin dispersing back to their duties. Finally there was some resemblance of calm and order for the moment. The capri chuckled airily as he turned to face the bright-faced woman with a warm smile.

"Aye," he confirmed in a soft-spoken yet gritted exhale It almost looked as if he was actively squinting to get a good look at who he was talking to, "That be meh, heh heh. I knew you'da all come sooner then late'a. Please... forgive my people's less than polite reactions. We be havin' a rough few days due to the recent raids. I git their frustration, truly I do, but I be doin' all I can do ya know? I jus' wish they had a bit more patience... not that I can blame em though." The capri cleared his throat as he waddled a bit closer to Len with his staff acting like a cane. The rattling of bells and fireflies within the glass jar swayed with his movement, jingling and jangling in an array of lights and glitter. "But I digress Miss Len... The name's Copernicus. A pleasura' to meet yeh." the elder formally introduced himself with a respectful bow, further displaying his impressive gnarled horns. They were long and well worn over the many decades, a true signature of his age and wisdom.

"I take it ya came alone, lass?" Copernicus asked looking around her and the lack of individuals that accompanied Lenara's sudden entrance. He stroked his chinny chin-chin with his bushy fingers against his dirtied-white beard. "Mmmm," he sighed with a hint of hesitation, "Surely other individuals must also be on their way 'cause I made sure to ask the guild for-a party of at least-"

That's when he noticed an exceptionally tall figure stomping their way towards them. The nearby villagers ensured to give Kong a wide berth hoping not to attract the ire of such a fierce looking giant. The guards held their spears up, ready to protect their village if need be, though few were clearly shaking in their boots. None of them looked to have seen such a large hulking figure like Kong before... their chances of even defeating him looked slim if they tried. Even Copernicus froze stiffly, holding his staff tightly as he creened his neck up to get a good look at him. Nevertheless, he ensured to give the same friendly vibe as he did towards Lenara, if he was truly here for the same reason the other fella was.

"Aye, hallo up there!" the capri politely called out with a baa, "Ya look like ya came a long ways 'way. I take it ya 'ere for the request too?" He noticed Kong's response was blunt and rigid, sounding as if he truly didn't want to be here, but the flyer he presented matched with the Capri's request. "Fair enough." Copernicus nodded, before introducing himself in kind, "A pleasua to have ye join us, oh mighty one."

Though it wouldn't take long for three more adventurers to show up and complete the overall roster. One was a white-haired woman with dark red eyes, decked out in dark clothing and a smaller blade. The next to show up was a rather scantily-clad gunslinger coming on horseback and carriage, being a true frontierswoman if the Capri had ever seen one. And lastly, there was a quiet woman in dark violet clothing and with eyes as golden as the stars themselves. Copernicus was rather impressed with the spectrum of adventurers willing to take on the assignment, even hopeful that they might all have what it takes. After properly introducing himself to all involved, he straightened himself up with his stick and gazed at the five brave adventurers.

"Quite da sizable cast 'ere," Copernicus observed with a soft smile, "Thank ya lads n' lassies all for comin'. De flyers given out had properly discussed the stakes at hand 'ere, so I won't be keepin' ya here for too long. I'll quickly refill yas in before we get started." Turning back to the hill, he'd once again showcase the ruined fields being tended by the farmers down below. "As ya can see," the Capri began somberly, "We 'ere at Garagol village had been recently raided by assailants wantin' to steal our foods supply. As had a couple o' other neighborin' villages over the past month. Our farmers be mournin' the loss of their months of hard work... as do the guardsmen to our recently fallen bretheren under the hands of these terrible folks. And our people be goin hungry cuz of it all."

He then turned to face the adventurers, "We recently identified the folks responsible being a group of simianfolk - or uh, monkeyfolk if you wish to call em." the capri stated firmly, "We believe they have a camp somewhere higher in da Paizu Mountains. There's rumors of old ruins and abandoned temples in de area... I've sent search parties to find any leads but unfortunately we aint found any yet." His ears flooped down before his posture hunched back in a slow saddened slump. "Worst yet, one of em hadn't returned for the past few hours by now. I fear the worst has happened..."

Realizing his downed state, he rose up to clear his throat. "Nevertheless, yer tasks are simple. Find out where the monkey-men are hidin' out and get our food back if yas can." He then reached into his back and pulls out a piece of large leather and handed it over to the group. "I 'ave a trade map of the mountain routes to help ya know roughly where ya going," the capri explained, "Jus'... be careful now. The moun'ains 'emselves are known to be quite unforgiving to all who pass through. 'Specially to those who don't know the area well. If things be gettin' really hairy up there, please by all means return safely. Just labelin where ya last saw em will help us a ton."

"Now 'en, if there be any questions or clarifications about whatcha needa do, or any sorta supplies ya need, please by all means ask away. We'll do what we can."

Karmilla leaned back lazily as the village leader spoke, nodding along with a calm, almost carefree air. The stalk of grass between her teeth shifted as she chewed on it thoughtfully, her hat tipped just enough to shadow her sharp eyes. When the man handed her the map, she took it with a polite tip of her hat, her fingers brushing the worn parchment as she spread it open to inspect the markings.

Well, now, ain’t that somethin’,” she drawled, her accent thick as molasses. She passed the map around to her comrades, making sure each one got a good look. “We’ll get yer resources back, 'Oldie. You jus’ sit tight and don’t go losin’ no sleep over it, We got this.

Her voice carried the weight of reassurance, but her smirk hinted at the thrill of the hunt already brewing in her mind. Spitting the grass tail to the side, she turned on her heel and gestured toward her carriage, her boots kicking up a small puff of dust as she walked.

Now then,” she said, her grin widening as she looked at her companions, her voice lilting with playful mischief. “Who’s ready to take care o’ some monkey-business?” She chuckled, her tone brimming with self-satisfaction at her pun.

She adjusted her hat with a flourish and leaned casually against the side of her carriage, her fingers drumming lightly against her gun’s strap. The spark in her eyes said it all—she was rarin’ to go.

The beastly giant raised a dense eyebrow when the village elder handed him yet more paperwork. He pinched the map between his forefinger and thumb, taking it without saying anything. He could freely admit that he never knew how to read such a thing. The ways of the world were more familiar to him than ink on parchment. The shifting winds told him everything he needed to know. The rocks and stones spoke endless stories and whispered countless hints to those who would listen. His [Sixth Sense] provided him murmuring glimpses of things that were not perceivable to mortal eyes, spirits of creatures and even people who were not truly there. Confining that to something he could easily tear or lose seemed counter-intuitive.

He merely pocketed the map and started heading towards the Paizu Mountains, stomping off in much the same way as he arrived. He would follow the residual energies of what these monkey-men left behind in their feverish kleptomania. They were easy enough to identify, giving off more upbeat and wild spikes in what he could understand. He was little more than a bipedal bloodhound, tracking the chittering scoundrels along their main artery of travel.

He could perceive that they were using multiple lanes, attacking from different routes to avoid actually encountering stiff resistance. But he loyally followed the largest and most traveled pathway they hopped and skittered along. Whether or not the others wanted to follow him or the map was beyond his capacity for empathy.

Kong merely moved where he needed to go. Whatever was behind, before, or around him never seemed to concern him much. He still wore his warclub on his shoulder, nestling it close to his neck. At any given moment, he could be ready for combat.

The fact that he didn't seem to want for roads only added to this contrarian attitude of his. He'd walk through the devastated fields and rice paddies, pausing only to change direction once he found a more desirable route to follow.

His heavy teeth clattered like stones. He grimaced as he looked upon the devastation and moved it out of his way.

"Pathetic little things. Did they expect these crops to fight back?"

Kong's skewed view of the world through battle only painted these monkeys as cowards, not bandits or reavers or even starving souls. The only possible fate he could afford for them them would be complete and utter destruction.

"Nice to meet you Copernicus!" She said, giving a bow almost akin to a curtsy -- though she didn't have a skirt of any kind. The pants she wore indeed seemed like they'd seem more wear and tear than something more formal.

The welcome wasn't exactly as warm as she expected. It seemed as though in her efforts to introduce herself; she had bulldozed those were around her a bit haphazardly. Though the elder seemed to be a bit happy about everything.

"It's fine. I probably should have introduced myself a bit more subtley." She said, scratching the back of her head habitually. "I can understand why they might be upset. I came right as they were voicing their plights. You can tell them all I apologize if, I don't get a chance to do so myself." With a curious expression, she looked about.

Was she alone? She could only wonder.

"I hope not! I could use some help..." She admitted, sparing him the fact that this was her very first adventure. "But, I wouldn't be surprised if people show up later. There was no group when I was here. But some might just being showing up for the job. Who knows? Maybe we'll get someone who can do this by themselves. But I'm willing to believe that at least some are on their way."

However, it soon appeared that others had appeared before she did. And a few more came right on a que. The first of which seemed to be a menacing looking large man with a club -- with big golden eyes.

"Glad your on our side!" She chimes as soon more people appear before her. One was a woman with a scythe. "Good day yourself." Len said with a friendly wave. Another seemed to be some type of gunslinger "Hello! Nice to meet you!" She said with an eager smile. The last woman who appeared didn't say anything at all. And thus Len didn't greet her. She only smiled in a way that was welcoming. She could talk when she was ready, as far Len had seen it anyway.

The man spoke to them and explained the nature of the situation. Despite all she said, Len had thoughtfully summarized it as follows. A bunch of monkeys had stolen the village's food.

"I think the only thing we might need is something to bring the food back if we can. But we'll see. Let's get down to someone monkey business!" Len said with a thumbs up to Karmilla before continuing. "Maybe we can use your carriage to carry some of the food back. I wonder what the terrain will lo-" Her suggestion was cut short as she noticed something.

When Len spun around quickly to get a hold of the map. But the map wasn't there. However, she caught sight of it in Kong's pocket.

"HEY WAAAIIT UUUUUUP!" half yelled and half whined, Kong already well on his way to starting the mission. Without any further words, she took off after him and the "Adventure" began.

After Sam, more people clearly after this quest showed up. What appeared to be a heavily armed farmer, or maybe a rancher? No matter. Samantha offered a brief nod of acknowledgement. And a curvy woman with a very form fitting outfit, unlike the rancher, she remained quiet. The scholar looked at her for a few seconds, mildly puzzled by her out of place looks, but set her thoughts about the woman and focused back on the elder.

Copernicus talked to the locals asking about the situation that brought her here, making them disperse for the moment. After a quick briefing, the mission was clear. Simple in nature, complex in context. The spot where these vandals hid was to be respected. Once again, Sam nodded to the rancher, giving a quick, yet thorough look at the map. And passing it along if need be. A faint smile grew on her lips when the energetic young woman greeted her back. The power of youth, eh?

The thick accented woman appeared ready, the giant walked off on his own, and the youngin ran after him. Communication will be an issue, won't it?

"What say you, rancher? Should we be on our way, too?" she half-jokingly asked. "I wouldn't mind something warm for the road, Copernicus." Sam stated casually. She surely hoped this was done and over before they'd need to really bring provisions along.

Astraea Nox stood quietly at the edge of the gathered group, her golden eyes tracing the arc of the ruined fields below. The destruction was worse up close—crooked paths carved through the crops, their vibrant life extinguished in a chaos of singed remains and deep gouges. She inhaled deeply, letting the cool mountain air fill her lungs. This world was as beautiful as it was cruel, and it never ceased to remind her of that balance. It was almost poetic, she thought, the way serenity and strife seemed woven together here. It mirrored her own existence in ways she did not care to examine too deeply.

She hadn’t intended to be here, at the base of the Paizu Mountains, standing among strangers as they discussed raids and stolen crops. Her plans had been as ephemeral as the breeze—a simple journey to learn more about this world, to gain insight into its culture and people. But the wrong turn, the wrong carriage, and perhaps the guiding hand of some unseen force had led her to Garagol Village instead. The sights and sounds of the small community stirred something bittersweet in her, an echo of a life she no longer remembered in full. The modest homes, the resilience of the people, and the soft rhythm of the watermill by the river were at once comforting and foreign. She had no ties to these villagers, no obligation to assist them, and yet she lingered, drawn by the weight of their plight.

Her outfit, flowing and elegant in shades of purple and silver, was entirely unsuited for this environment, standing out against the earth tones of the villagers' modest attire. She was acutely aware of the gazes that followed her—curious, wary, and occasionally hopeful. Astraea felt out of place, not just here, but in this entire world. And yet, her presence seemed to demand attention, even when she wished it wouldn’t. She shifted slightly, brushing her fingers over the leather case strapped to her hip. The tarot cards within pulsed faintly, as if sensing her inner turmoil. They were her constant companions, yet she avoided using them. The memories of her past life, and the fate they had wrought upon her, were wounds not yet healed.

The elder Capri, Copernicus, spoke with a weariness that only years of leadership could impart. Astraea listened as he explained the villagers’ predicament—monkeyfolk raiders, stolen supplies, and a dwindling sense of security. Her gaze flicked to the others who had gathered. A giant with an imposing presence, a gunslinger with a sharp edge to her demeanor, and others whose expressions and movements carried the weight of experience. She felt like an interloper among them, her knowledge of this world shallow compared to their confidence. Yet, as she watched the elder hand over the map and heard the resolution in their voices, she felt the familiar pull of responsibility—a force she couldn’t quite explain, much less ignore.

Astraea had no weapons, no combat experience, and no clear idea of how she would contribute. Her skills lay elsewhere, in deciphering the currents of fate, but she hesitated to wield that power again. Instead, she let her feet carry her forward, trailing after the group as they began their journey. The giant moved with purpose, stomping through the fields with little regard for paths, while others took more measured approaches. Astraea found herself in the rear, observing, thinking. She didn’t speak, unsure of what to say or where she fit into this mismatched assembly.

Her mind wandered as she walked, absorbing the sights and sounds around her. She thought of the elder’s words, the villagers' voices' desperation, and the ruined fields' stark reality. This wasn’t her problem to solve, yet she felt compelled to act. Perhaps it was a sense of guilt, a debt to the god who had given her this second chance. Or perhaps it was simply who she was—or who she had been. Either way, she would follow the group into the mountains, unsure of what she could offer but willing to find out.

For now, Astraea let the world guide her steps, the weight of her cards a quiet reminder that she still had a role to play, even if she didn’t yet know what it was.

Copernicus smiled warmly at Karmilla's charismatic drawl, one which oozed confidence in wanting to get the job done. "Ah, bless ya kindly dear," he baed gratefully with a slight bow of his head, "We 'ave confidence ya can git the job done swift n' span." Clearly she sounded like she'd been in her fair share of jobs such as these, while the others appeared to be more on the novice level. Like fresh flowers budding at the crack of spring dawn after a long cold winter. Not that he didn't mind of course, all he valued was their safety. And her experience would surely prove vital in helping to guide them through the adventuring process.

The capri leaned over to Lenara as she aired her request for a transporting the goods back to them. Ah, yes! That would be quite an issue for them. Especially given the burden that was traverse through the rough mountainous terrain. Even the most skilled of climbers would find it tedious at best and downright lethal at worst. He would give them a cart and horses if need be, but it seemed that the gunslinger lady had them covered in that department. Though as he was about to relay this info, he too would discover that the giant man in their group was already on their way. "Oh dear," he breathed concernedly, watching Kong pummel straight through walls and fields with little disregard to anyone around him. The villagers below scuttled out of the way to avoid getting squashed, while a few angry farmers bleated curses and insults at the hulking man who was essentially adding salt to their wounds.

Talk about someone who's straight to the point.

As Lenara chased after him, old Copernicus gave an airy chuckle as he held to his staff. "Welp." he muttered bluntly as he faced his attention to the remaining adventurers still present here, "I suppose ya'll betta go after em. Best o' luck to all of yas! Ya certainly gonna need it." Sam would then ask if they could have something warm to drink for the road, as the air even down here was fairly cold. "Oh, of course!" the goat baed politely as he pointed down the hill where Kong and Len roughly ran off, "There be a wee lil' tea house jus' down de road from 'ere! Lovely ole' selection o' hot drinks n' pastries to keep ya tummies occupied. Ya can tell em the bill's on meh today, heh heh." He was kind enough to give them an extra map as well.

With a gentle wave of his hand, Copernicus formally dismissed the party to head on their way. While the introductory process had progressed far quicker than anticipated, he was hopeful in their capabilities to get to the bottom of this situation. Any information they could get their hands on frankly was vital. All he could do now was pray for them that the grand peaks of the Paizu Mountains would treat them fairly as they made their daunting ascent...

Paizu Mountains - Main Trail [Northbound]

As the crisp mountain air blew through the windswept hills, the party would find themselves traversing through what felt like an hour up one of the main trails leading into the mountain range. They made for decent time and perhaps had gotten to know each other a bit more. While most of the trip was initially through dense forest near Garagol Village, higher up there were breaks in the woods to reveal grand rocky vistas that overlooked the pristine valleys below. The views here were quite magnificent. Flocks of birds flew effortlessly through the sweeping wind-streams, while small herds of deer-like creatures grazed on the flowers and moss-covered rocks. Keen eyed viewers might catch small fox-like creature skitters down the cliffside with a mouse in its jaws, heading towards the river below.

Down here, the weather was rather bearable, if only a bit chilly. Where they were heading however looked to be much colder, with puffy dark clouds swirling the daunting peaks of the massive snowcapped mountains in the distance.

Attuned to the natural aura of the surrounding environment, Kong was unwavering in his pursuit to track down the simian assailants. Mixed within the various scents and smells scattered across the trail were those of past travelers that had came this way. Most came from animals going about their way, using this trail as a natural highway to and fro, though the scents of sentient mortals were also present... some fresher then others.

Fortunately for the rest of the party following the hulking man, he'd find himself loosely following the path provided rather than storming through the thick wild brush like a bear searching for honey. Good thing too. Karmilla's carriage had already saved the party precious time than they would've traversing on foot. Indeed, the tea house they visited prior to leaving had supplied them with three days worth of rations and refreshments of their choice courtesy of Copernicus' generosity. The trip was not meant to be long, possibly a day or two at best, but given the unpredictability of the mountains it was better to be safe than sorry.

Eventually, the party would themselves at a split in the road. Two paths branched in opposite directions.

The left path seemed to lead further into the valley, where there was more forest for them to get through. According to the map, it would lead them right to the river and eventually merge with a major trade route leading west. An old mill was dotted and labeled in red ink just by the river.

The right path heading northeast lead further up the mountain,. While initially looking steep, the map mentioned a rocky pass that'll lead them through the rest of the way and continue up the north trail deeper into the mountains. "Ruins?" was labeled in red ink roughly in the middle of the path.

Which path would the party take?

Karmilla held the reins, the leather straps resting lightly in her hands as she guided the carriage along the winding mountain trail. The crisp air ruffled her hair, and she couldn’t help but glance out at the grand vistas breaking through the forest, the sight of the pristine valleys below drawing a faint smirk to her lips.
Patting the horse gently on its neck, she murmured softly, “Good boy, keep goin’ now, just a bit more.” Her voice was warm, her tone soothing, before she glanced back at her comrades nestled in the carriage. “Y’all snug back there?” she called with a teasing grin, tipping her wide-brimmed hat before turning her attention back to the trail.

As the carriage rolled to a stop at the fork in the road, Karmilla pulled on the reins with a sharp, practiced motion. “Tch chk!” she clicked her tongue, bringing the horse to a halt. The wheels creaked slightly as the carriage stilled, and Karmilla hopped down with her usual grace, boots crunching on the dirt path.
She took a moment to study the split paths ahead, her sharp eyes scanning the options as she reached for the map tucked into her belt. Flipping it open, she glanced at the labels, her lips quirking into a thoughtful frown. “Now, let’s see here... left to the mill, or right up to the ruins...”

Karmilla turned to the group, her smirk returning. “Well, folks, looks like we got ourselves a decision to make. Ain’t no use sittin’ ‘round twiddlin’ our thumbs.” She adjusted her hat and crossed her arms, leaning casually against the carriage. “Personally, I’m leanin’ towards the ruins. Nothin’ like a good ol’ mystery to stretch the legs and get the blood pumpin’.”
She gave the group a moment to chime in, her gaze flickering between them with an air of mischief. “What say y’all? Left for the safe ‘n easy road, or right for a bit more adventure?”

The living fortress known as Kong kept up pace with the carriage despite not taking the main road. He barely followed a concise pattern, more moving straight through the winding paths and rolling steppes. The essence of the world around him flashed in vivid sparks of color and sound every now and again. The primates were not easy to track this way, having split apart and come together in seemingly random patterns.

It grated against his nerves. Beastkin with such a wild reputation often had an untethered amount of supposed freedom, though their definition of it sickened him to his core. They presumed they were free from the shackles of nature, doing as they pleased without succumbing to the consequences. The world had a bizarre sense of karma. Kong supposed he would have to play that part before the end.

His status as a walking storm only became more obvious with the frequency of him appearing and disappearing as he saw fit, marching through any given riverbed and scaling vertical cliffs by smashing his fingers through solid rock as if it were paper. He would always favor the straighter path, walking alongside the carriage only to refuse a deviation in his purpose and resurface later without explanation.

The physical presence of the primates would have been impossible to actually narrow down. His brow furrowed as he crossed in front of the carriage yet again, barely registering the other members of his group.

In front of them sat a decision to make, either one path or the other. Kong could detect the primates having come from both directions. He gnashed his teeth, a sound like tumbling boulders escaping his grimace.

"It doesn't matter," he snarled at the gunslinger.

"In either case, there's almost a guaranteed chance we'll be ambushed,"

He walked towards the face of the nearest rocky cliff and lifted his warclub.

"So why not let them know we're here instead?!"

He brought down his weapon upon the stone with a clash of thunder. The heaving strikes churned out colossal chunks of earth and minerals, forming a tunnel and deepening it with each blow.

The sounds echoed for miles like blasting charges, leading many to believe that a new mine was being opened up somewhere under a growing black storm cloud.

Kong's intentions were clear. With his warclub howling with terrifying [ Quake] and [ Breaker] enhancements, he was sinking his fangs deep into the mountainside and challenging whatever could hear him.

The tunnel expanded, yielding to his rage, until he emerged from the other side. He stood there as an unsatisfying tumble of small stones broke the pale water of a quiet pool. He stood amidst the Ruins, which curled around to become parallel to his starting point.

He grumbled, spat out a mouthful of grit and dust, and started walking again regardless of what he could smell or hear. He had no intention of stopping, especially when he had thrown such a hefty gauntlet.

In his mind, sneaking around and planning a careful course held no intrinsic value. Such things never survived first contact anyway - so why bother?

After a bit of walking -- Len had come to one conclusion.

"By the gods, I'm hungry." She'd walked here, received the briefing for adventure and then IMMEDIATELY walked off after Kong.

RUMBLE

There was a pit in stomach and her belly seemed intent on letting her know this fact very audible. In order to overcome it, she propels herself through mantra -- speaking her thoughts out loud so that words of others could reach her ears again. "As my brother said, a true warrior must be prepared to face down any threat! Be it fatigue, starvation or disease!"

Another rumble.

"Though I suppose I only need to wait until I get the tea house. Though he also does tell me that logistics is important. To the teahouse!" Thus it would be that they would arrive at the teahouse eventually and receive at least some provisions. Unless she needed to, she didn't see much point in walking further and eventually boarded the cart. It would be there that she would stuff herself down with the local cuisine.

"OMNONOMNOMNOM."

Within the back of Karmilla's Cart, she was already dipping into the rations providing. So rice balls, dumplings and a few bits of meat. Already she was scarfing down honeyed desert. And most of all, she seemed to wash it all down with a giant gulping of tea.

At the question of being snug, an immediate answer had come. "I'm great. Glad Sam mentioned grabbing food because I was busy chasing after big guy." She answered, pointing off at Kong. The rest of the food would be soon swallow and Len would find herself satisfied. She had eaten quickly as to have her body start digesting the food as quickly as possible for any battle which they might.

Time passed but soon there came a moment which would actually require she use her brain juices. After a time traveling in the cart, the group came to a crossroads. Len jumped outside of the cart.

"HUP!" Assuming Kong had no intention of being convenient, Len did not bother asking to see the map. Instead, she jumped on Kong's back and began climbing on his back. From this elevated position, Len wondered of trying to use her knowledge of warfare to try to predict where an enemy might attack from in the ruins [Scale and Assess]. As her hands appeared on his shoulder, she would begin looking over the map -- hear head hovering over his. "Hmmmm." Looking over the map best she could, she noticed red lines, wondering if perhaps this might be the same.

If I was an enemy, where would I attack from?

"Ruins huh?" She said. "Well if the place is gonna be dangerous, I say we clear it out!"

In that moment, Len watched as soon over Len's head -- Kong raised his massive war club.

"Eeep." A sound akin to pure fear.

Falling backwards, enough to feel what felt like an earthquake as Kong slammed his club down and made a giant hole. He disappeared into the hole, and she felt what seemed almost like seismic activity. Len smiled with a faint sense of both unease and amusement, giggling a little bit.

"Ruins it is! Though I think I'll take the cart...." Len said with a sheepish smile, as she scratched the back of her head. Getting up and dusting herself off -- Len would quickly scamper back onto the cart.

Len stuffs her face and jumps on Kong to look at the map, trying to use her warfare skills to scan for danger.

Samantha narrowed her eyes upon seeing the brute take off with the map, while stomping and damaging properties of the village further "Charming man..." She stated in a neutral tone, which sarcasm was mostly apparent only in context. The elder was wise enough to have another map in him. "Thank you" After a quick detour to take a couple fresh patries granted by Copernicus, she hopped on Karmilla's cart silently and politely eating. Glancing at the young adventurer munching on her much more complete spread of food. "Looks like you needed it, kiddo." the medic said after stopping to clean her mouth by patting it with a handkerchief. "Eat as much as you need. It's good for your growth." Then she turned to the one leading them "Just fine."

By the time they reached the fork in the road, Sam had finished her first pastry. And slowly munched on the second when they stopped to discuss. The clumsy brute clearly wasn't all that bright. The astral scholar ate as she watched the muscular man make a hole in the earth. Loudly.

She had finished eating by the time he was done making noise. Sam cleaned her mouth again, and turned to Karmilla. "Forget about him. Let's just head for the ruins, without announcing our presence to the entire mountain." And much like Lenara, she would calmly climb back into the carriage.

Is-Black-Swan-worth-pulling-in-Honkai-Star-Rail.jpg

Astraea Nox sat quietly in the back of the carriage, her ethereal presence barely disrupting the air around her as the group rumbled along the mountain trail. The rhythmic creak of the wheels and the occasional neigh of the horse pulling the carriage set a steady backdrop for her thoughts. Nestled amidst her companions, Astraea felt no need to speak. She was an observer, her golden eyes flicking from face to face, watching as Karmilla exchanged lighthearted banter, Lenara devoured her food with youthful energy, and Samantha maintained her composed demeanor. In their voices, Astraea found both a comfort and a reminder—this world was brimming with personalities, histories, and lives she had yet to fully understand.

Her right hand toyed with one of her tarot cards, the motion smooth and practiced, though her mind was only half-aware of the action. The card slid effortlessly between her fingers, catching the light as it rotated. It was The High Priestess, one of the five cards she carried, each imbued with a mysterious power she had yet to fully grasp. The High Priestess was a beautiful card, its design elegant and steeped in mystique. A serene figure sat upon a crescent moon throne, shrouded in flowing violet robes that seemed to shimmer with starlight. In her hands, the figure held a scroll etched with runes, half-concealed as if guarding ancient secrets. Behind her loomed a veil of twinkling constellations, symbolizing hidden knowledge and intuition. Astraea gazed at the card’s delicate design with a mix of reverence and trepidation, her fingertips brushing its edges as if drawing strength from its imagery.

The minutes turned to an hour, the chatter of her companions blending with the natural sounds of the mountain. Astraea remained in her contemplative state, the card twirling still in her hand. Finally, a subtle shift in the air drew her focus. She couldn’t explain it fully—something about the trail ahead felt off, as though the balance of the terrain had been disrupted. Trusting her instincts, Astraea tightened her grip on the card. With a deliberate motion, she pressed her thumb against its center, activating its latent power.

The response was immediate. A faint, almost imperceptible hum emanated from the card as it pulsed with a soft violet glow. Astraea’s golden eyes began to shimmer faintly, the subtle radiance a telltale sign of her connection to the card. The High Priestess sharpened her senses, allowing her to perceive the world with uncanny clarity. The once-blurred edges of her surroundings became crisp, each detail of the trail revealing itself to her in vivid clarity. Every stone, root, and uneven patch of dirt seemed to whisper its story to her, weaving a tapestry of truths she couldn’t see before.

Standing gracefully, Astraea steadied herself against the sway of the carriage. Her gaze fixed ahead, past Karmilla Kerberos, who was seated confidently at the reins. She leaned forward slightly, her sharp instincts guiding her attention to a specific spot on the trail. It was subtle, almost invisible to the untrained eye, but Astraea’s heightened perception discerned the disturbance immediately. The dirt was loosely packed, its edges uneven, and faint markings hinted at recent tampering. It was a trap—a pitfall waiting to snare an unwitting traveller.

“Karmilla,” Astraea said softly, her voice calm but resolute. She placed a gentle hand on the edge of the carriage for balance as her other hand extended forward, pointing toward the seemingly ordinary patch of road ahead. “Stop the carriage.”

Astraea's golden eyes still glowing faintly stared at the spot. “There’s a trap,” she explained, her gaze unwavering. “A pitfall, just there in the middle of the road.”

With the raw power of a ravaging thunderstorm coupled with determination dense as lead, Kong began thrashing his warclub against the side of the mountain with reckless abandon. Crash! Crash! Each swing scraped off huge chunks of rock and soil as he began boring into the cliffside. Such powerful blows echoed across the valley, shattering the peaceful aura of the once calm tranquil valley. Birds fluttered away. The nearby deer and foxes scurried for cover. It wasn't quite clear how far his antics could be heard, but it was safe to reckon that anyone within a several mile radius would be wary to the terrible calamitous noise of brute force attempting to penetrate through a literal mountainside.

  • + Breaker F - Works best on walls and physical barriers.
  • + Quake F - Works only on the ground
    • F-grade: 10 feet cubed
  • Conclusion: Unsuccessful. Requires [Tunneling] and [Navigation] in order to properly accomplish task.

But while Kong was no doubt powerful to break through stone, he'd find little headway in his attempt to tunnel his way through. Anytime he'd seem to make decent headway within, the ceiling above him would collapse and make his process more difficult. He'd find that digging through a mountain was more complicated than breaking down stone walls. And even if he was capable of accomplishing so, navigating in near total darkness in such cramped conditions required more than his own senses to know where he'd be going. Try as he might, Kong would find his efforts valiant yet futile.

Meanwhile, the rest of the party would continue the trip by carriage as they all collectively agreed to head up the right path. For them they'd find their gradual ascent further up the mountain, for the most part, rather uneventful. While the path was bumpy at certain places and the temperature slowly getting chillier the higher they went, the views off the side of the cliff would become even more majestic for anyone up to sightseeing... and downright terrifying for those who feared heights. While less wooded and more rocky than when they first diverted up the path, the party were still below the altitude to encounter snow on the ground. They now treaded between the warm and lush valley below with the cold, desolate snowcapped peaks still above them.

Roughly another hour of travel would pass by as the trail began to steady out and lead them down a more horizontal path across the mountain range. However, as the path began to straighten out and head through a rocky in pass, Astraea's keen instincts warned the party of an approaching hazard just in the nick of time. The horses came to a full stop, just feet away from a crudely disguised pitfall trap. Upon further investigation, it was clear to Astraea that this was a relatively recent addition to the path... probably set up during the night. Thankfully no victims had yet succumbed to the deadly spikes below.

Though it no doubt indicated that that they were slowly encroaching into hostile territory...

Thankfully, the party wouldn't see or activate any other hidden traps within the in pass. Eventually, they'd exit the pass and find themselves hugging a cliff-wall. Though as they were about to round a cliff-side corner, they'd hear a commotion of voices ahead. The voices were faint, but there were various hoots and hollers mixed in with grunts and speech. Any familiar with the language would know that it was the tongue of Bestial...

j4PGiD3.jpeg

Settled in a clearing, the party would finally encounter a group of seven rugged-looking simianfolk sitting around a campfire with a covered carriage of their own. They were currently unaware of the party's presence, being too busy talking and chatting amongst themselves to really pay attention to their surroundings. There were four different sub-species of apefolk that made up the mischievous looking band.

Three looked a lot like chimpanzees, with one individual sporting a scar on their left eye coupled with a jagged smile. All three wielded axes, with the scarred individual sporting a spear on its back. Sitting closest to the group with its back turned was an armored gorilla warrior wearing iron armor and had a warhammer leaning beside him. He was drinking a bottle of wine. Perched atop the roof of the carriage was the striking red-face of a small yet fierce looking snow macaque, looking to have the arsenal of a rogue. He was the main jokester given his attitude, making all sorts of funny and scary faces with screeches to match. And beside him was a baboon fellow holding a crossbow on his shoulder, casually looking around while messing around with the snow-furred macaque.

Yet there was one looked to be one odd member of the group that didn't seem to share the same energy as the others. Sitting beside the one-eyed chimp looked to be another baboonfolk, only he was completely furless. He was the most reserved of the seven, showing a submissive nature unlike its other boisterous compatriots. A real odd-ball... and one who wasn't really engaging with them.

With their attention drawn upon themselves, there was a window for which the party could quickly strategize before proceeding forth...

As Kong struggled, his rage only grew. As the rock pelted his skin, shaking his bones, he slowly realized something important. With the tunnel collapsing around him at every given interval of his grandiose attempt to carve it out from the flesh of the earth, he suddenly stopped.

His breathing was heavy. His pores were clogged with dust, churning out thick beads of sweat that only dried immediately and clung to the grit. Every inhalation was agony, hot and pointless against the solid, stagnant air of his makeshift tomb. He placed a closed fist upon the stone that was yet to yield against him, and then squarely set his brow to the wall.

"I'm sorry," he mumbled, his lungs normalizing their air flow as he controlled them through long, deep breaths.

"You were here long before I was. I had no right to do such an impetuous thing to you,"

He exhaled and started collecting what he had demolished, setting it back into the hole with as much grace and dexterity as he could muster. He used his colossal strength to press the stones together, bandaging them as best he could through sheer weight of muscle and tactless power. It wasn't pretty, but he hoped that it would hold until natural processes sealed it properly.

He went oddly quiet as he followed the group, standing off to the side even as they entered into the Ruins and began the journey proper.

He didn't even immediately initiate combat like perhaps everyone thought he would.

This cold reminds me of home.

The ride towards the ruins had mostly been quiet. She had been told to forget about Kong. Lenara smiled at Samantha when she explained that she should forget about Kong.. "I dunno if I can do that. He'd be pretty useful to have around." She says, looking out thoughtfully.

"I think he might be the strongest out of all of us, if nothing else. I could really use someone to support with my strikes. I don't think I'm very stron" She said, looking at things from a glass half-full perspective. "I hope he comes around! Or maybe it works." She said, looking back at where it was that Kong's efforts.

"A trap?!" Lenara asked as she reached around her back and drew her sword. Her eyes fell upon the hole before them before she went to scanning the area around them. She looked around the hills for any signs of the enemy, peeping outside the cart with her eyes narrowed sharply. "Huh. I guess with a trap like this, they only need to come look around every now and again. Still, spikes in the middle of the road? These people are beyond just robbers...." She said. They were highwaymen. Bandits. If they were backhome, they'd be sent straight to the frontlines where this could be used productively against things that deserved not. Not innocents.

Yet outside of fighting monsters, things got...murkier.

"Let's move on. Thanks uh" Len looked at the mysterious woman. "I never caught your name!"

The Clearing

For the rest of the trip -- Len had her sword in her hand. Scarfing down so much food earlier meant that she had plenty of time to digest onto the trip. The sugary things ingested worked to both replenish the abundance of energy lost and grant energy she'd yet to burn.

However soon, they got. And unlike what might have been expected, Len looked at each of them with an star that seemed dutiful. There was an odd lack of anger -- yet in her face one could see a certain sternness. Her eyes locked on the large gorilla among their group. Just as she was about to speak.

"KONG!" She said. "You're back!"

Her mood brightened. Yet seeing him apologize as such made her frown. Particularly with one bit that resonated with her. "Don't worry! We all make mistakes sometimes! Me especially. But you're here now and that's what counts! Let's look towards the future!" She said, pointing towards the Simian folk. Her explanation migth have sounded generic, but one might be able to instinctively know she meant every word of what she was saying

"I'm not good at stealth myself really. But I have ideas." She said, starting to conjure up a plan using her knowledge of tactics. [Warfare F]

"There's a couple people we need to take out. The crossbow guy should go! Or he'll shoot us. And I think we need Kong to take on the other big guy. But if we can kill off the tiny guys as quick as we can, then we'll be in good position."

One was pointed out in particular, however.

"I think we should keep the furless one alive! That way we can make him rat on his friends! Or that's something like what my brother'd say. Get some answers out of him!" Her more statistical approach however gave way to an eagerness that was very easily.

She said, proudly crossing her arms. "Other than that, it's a full frontal assault! You" She points at Karmilla "Can be all like BANG BANG BANG" She points at Samantha "And you can be all like SWISH with your scythe" She points at Kong. "And then you can be all like ME SMASH boom!" She pointed at Astrea "And then you can wave round your cards like WOOSH WOOSH their fortune I think!" Lenara said, clearly mistaking what Astrea's true talents and abilities were.

Len swung her great sword to point it at the apes.

"Let's go! I say we start this off with a bang. Let's start by shooting the crossbow guy!" Len said as she felt joy. Perhaps a bit too much joy. Already she was starting to close on the chimps -- running behind a tree. She from behind said tree in a manner that was frankly obvious. But she didn't want the carriage to be caught up in the fighting.

Her first ever fight with none of her family to watch her back, was likely to start very soon.

Len stuffs her face and jumps on Kong to look at the map, trying to use her warfare skills to scan for danger.

"With that weapon of yours, I doubt you lack strength." The scholar offered to Lenara. The silent, mostly lost in thoughts woman finally spoke, earning a curious glance from Samantha. It appeared that she was correct about the trap. she wondered if this woman could be more helpful if she actually decided to talk. No matter. There's no point in getting lost in the past.

The group eventually managed to find a group of ape and primate folk. Somehow managing to alert them. Samantha's eyes turned to the giant man, who somehow read the room and didn't rush senselessly. She still doubted he would listen to much strategizing, so she just hoped he could act as a meat shield as he inevitably rushes in first. Lenara jumped at the opportunity to greet back her brutish friend, who likely was apologizing to mother nature, not them. Which was fine in Samantha's eyes, not like she expected much in that regard.

Samantha's knowledge in combat strategy was pretty much nonexistent, so she remained quiet and listened. If only it was as simple as a duel...

Lenara's enthusiasm manage to get another smile from the scholar "I'll swish as best as I can."

Seeing as the youngin put herself on the vanguard, Sam approached the enemy with caution, flattening herself against the cliff. As close as he could to the ape camp without giving herself away. Scythe at the ready.

Karmilla Kerberos

Karmilla eased the cart off the road, the wheels creaking softly as it came to a halt. Hopping down with practiced grace, she grabbed a handful of hay from the back and spread it out on the ground for her horse. “There ya go, sugar,” she murmured, affectionately rubbing the horse’s neck. The animal nickered softly, nuzzling her hand, and for a brief moment, Karmilla allowed herself a small smile.

But that peace didn’t last long. Her gaze flicked up as Kong lumbered back into view, and her expression soured. She didn’t trust that brute, not one bit. Sure, he was strong—no denying that—but strength without a brain was as useful as a shotgun without shells. He trampled through fields and disregarded everyone’s input, like a bull in a china shop. Karmilla sighed, adjusting her wide-brimmed hat as frustration bubbled under her calm exterior.

Reaching into the cart, she pulled out her double-barreled shotgun, the familiar weight comforting in her hands. With a practiced flick of her wrist, she checked the chambers before slinging it over her shoulder.

“Aight, y’all,” she drawled, turning to the rest of the party with a smirk that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “We got ourselves a party to crush. What's our strategy?” Her gaze lingered on Kong as she spoke, her tone sharp as the edge of a blade.

She all but snarled, her voice dropping slightly as she prayed to every god she could think of that the giant wouldn’t charge in headfirst and ruin everything.

Her fingers flexed on the shotgun, her stance steady and sure. Karmilla wasn’t just here to watch a mountain of muscle make mistakes—she was here to make sure they got the job done right.

With the whole group now remobilized, they began to prepare for the battle that's to come. Despite his lumbering size and fearsome persona, Kong didn't go barging in like the force of nature that he claimed to be. Perhaps he was embarrassed by his previous attempt to lure the enemy to them. Yet it would be the wide-eyed rookie Lenara - sporting bits of previous warfare experience under her belt - who'd begin to take reigns of the operation.

The strategy she proposed seemed simple enough. A full-frontal assault - seven apes against five adventurers. The crossbow-wielding baboon was a priority target given its range, as were the lone macaque rogue and the chimp warriors. Kong's strength would be best applied against the musculature of a silverback gorilla's strength and power with his hulking war hammer. The hairless baboon would be spared for the party to interrogate, unless he seemed willing or cooperative on the off-chance to rat out his own group.

As soon as she finished explaining, Lenara would dart out of their rocky cover and quietly make her way behind the tree closest to the group. Thankfully for her, the monkeyfolk seemed to be too engrossed with each other to even notice her briefly walking across their path of vision. The macaque's brilliant red face would briefly look over in their general direction thinking he heard something, but he'd miss the sneaky swordswoman passing by entirely. He dismissed the subtle disturbance thinking it was a scuttling rabbit or squirrel. All three chimps were oblivious to their surroundings, including the one-eyed leader who was messing with the hairless baboon. The gorillafolk closest to her took another swig of his wine before plopping the bottle down on the ground, not even bothering to look behind him. Even the crossbow baboon on the carriage was glancing over to the left rather than the right.

Samantha took position just around the corner of the cliff, flattening her body to ensure she remained unseen with her deadly scythe ready to reap the opportunity. Karmilla reached for her double-barreled shotgun before setting her feet on the ground. Though she still held back out of sight by the carriage, being just behind Sam alongside Kong and Asterea.

With the apes unaware, this was a prime setup for an ambush. Our party may be out numbered seven to five, but their unique strengths and capabilities help to bridge the power gap substantially. The only thing to do now was to take action... or wait for their opponents to notice them.

Astraea Nox had spent much of the journey in silence, her golden eyes quietly observing her companions as the mountain trail wound ever upward. Though she had been the one to detect the pitfall trap earlier, a subtle use of her card’s power, Astraea felt no pride in her actions. She was merely playing her part—a quiet, watchful presence amidst the more dynamic and battle-ready members of the group. Her ethereal appearance, with silver hair cascading down her back and golden eyes that seemed to glow faintly in the dim light, set her apart. Yet, rather than drawing attention to herself, she preferred to remain on the periphery, a shadow amidst the party’s vibrancy.

When Lenara introduced herself earlier, Astraea had offered a simple response, her voice soft and measured. “Astraea,” she had said, giving only her first name. She saw no need to elaborate. The fewer questions she invited, the better. Her purpose here was still unclear even to herself. While others might have seen this quest as a mission to protect and provide for the villagers of Garagol, Astraea viewed it as an opportunity to observe—to learn more about the strange world she had been thrust into. These were her first steps in understanding its people, its customs, and perhaps even her own place within it.

As the carriage came to a halt and the group disembarked, Astraea moved with deliberate caution. She lingered at the back, her presence nearly ghost-like compared to the others, who sprang into action with a readiness that she could only admire from a distance. Lenara’s enthusiasm, Samantha’s sharp focus, Karmilla’s practical grit, and Kong’s sheer physicality all spoke to their confidence, their experience, or their natural talents for combat. In contrast, Astraea felt her limitations keenly. She possessed no weapons, no armor, and only a handful of tarot cards that granted powers as enigmatic as they were unpredictable. With just five cards in her possession, each use had to be carefully considered—every activation a choice that could alter the tide of events, for better or worse.

Standing at the rear of the group, Astraea watched as they began to position themselves for an ambush. She understood the strategy well enough; even in her previous life, where her gift for reading fates had led her down dangerous paths, she had seen how groups prepared for conflict. Yet she felt no compulsion to contribute to their planning. What could she offer? She was no warrior, no tactician. Her power lay in observation, in seeing the subtle threads that connected events, and in weaving those threads into patterns others might miss. But in the chaos of combat, she doubted such a skill would hold much value.

Her fingers brushed the case at her hip, where her tarot cards rested, as if seeking reassurance from their weight. Each card was a fragment of her power, a connection to something far greater than herself. She thought of The Lovers, which could charm or disorient, and The High Priestess, which had guided them past the trap earlier. There was also The World, The Fool, and The Hierophant—each card holding potential, but each demanding care in its use. Astraea was acutely aware that she could not rely on them recklessly. They were tools, yes, but also burdens, reminders of the life she had left behind and the strange second chance she had been given.

As the others moved into their positions, Astraea stayed back, her gaze fixed on the clearing ahead where the simianfolk gathered around their campfire. Seven of them—armed, boisterous, and clearly unaware of the party’s presence. She studied their movements, their interactions, noting the one with the crossbow, the rogue-like macaque, and the gorilla with the warhammer. The hairless baboon caught her attention as well, its subdued demeanor setting it apart from the others. Astraea’s mind turned over the possibilities, considering how each of these individuals might react once the ambush began. Would the baboon fight alongside its companions, or would it cower? Would the crossbow wielder be their most dangerous opponent, or would the warhammer prove more devastating?

Though she said nothing aloud, her thoughts raced, mapping out scenarios and contingencies. If the ambush went awry, how could she help? Her cards might provide some support—an illusion to distract, a barrier to protect—but beyond that, she knew she could do little. Astraea’s role, for now, was to stay out of the way, to observe, and to be ready to act if the moment called for it. She tightened her grip on the case at her hip, her resolve firm despite her doubts.

The others seemed ready, their anticipation palpable. Astraea took a step back, positioning herself further from the frontlines. She would follow their lead, as she always did, content to let fate guide her steps. In this unfamiliar world, she could do little else
