The Principle Journey: Wrath of the North Main IC

IMG_3661.jpg
Henvo was still peering curiously at the men running about when the alpha called out. "Ey you over there!" The woman shouted so loud it hurt his ears. She got close, unnervingly close for his liking, Henvo had to pull his face backwards so she didn't touch his nose with hers. He didn't understand what exactly the alpha was so excited about, but it seemed to involve the individuals who were running. "What's your name?" The alpha demanded, squinting her eyes. Henvo knew that like most alphas, this woman would see any new presence as a threat. Henvo had no desire to lead, so he averted his gaze as a sign of submission he hoped was universal.

"Henvo. Stál." The Ferus in disguise said, thumping a hand on his chest twice. He hoped not to draw too much attention to himself, being part of the pack was more important than being a strong individual. Many hearts beat in a group that ran together, a heart that beat alone would fail.

With this in mind, he saw the rest of the men were still running, and seemed to have no intention of stopping. "If they run, what from? And so slowly?" He turned, preparing to join the men as they ran in circles around the fortress. This was a chance to prove his worth to the alpha, to show he would not be just a straggler who ate the scraps at the end of the hunt. Henvo thumped his chest twice again. "I run faster. You shall see, these men are weak." With that, he took off. He was quite a bit faster then the men, and within thirty seconds had a good lead on the main group. They showed no sign of catching up, and Henvo didn't even break a sweat.

Yana was as still as a statue and her face the stoic, blank canvas of someone lost deep in thought. She'd promised her older brother that she'd give joining the Norhad Swords a try, but so far it wasn't at all what she'd expected. In fact, she wasn't sure what she'd expected before she arrived. When she first reached the fortress she scouted the premises and was surprised to see so much chaos and damage. Whatever had happened here must have been quite disastrous to leave such an aftermath. But a promise was a promise and she could hardly call looking around giving the guild a chance.

Lately she'd been giving a hand in helping out at the ranch. It gave a different meeting to the term 'dirty work' as it was so much different than what she was used to but surprisingly she didn't mind it. She found it rather nice to be interacting with people other than her brother and even more so to work alongside others instead of alone. There was a lot to learn when it came to teamwork and socializing and doing things she'd never done before, but she felt that she was a willing pupil. It made her anxious at times, but so far she'd pushed through it and seemed to be doing well at going with the flow.

Yana was jolted out of her thoughts by a familiar voice. She looked over to see Leira Laramy calling out to her. Quickly she donned the cheerful facade she'd been using to help her get through the days.
"Coming!" her voice rang out high and clear. She shook her head as if clearing her thoughts and practically bounced over to Leira as they headed for the pond.

Avar eyed the establishment in front of him wondering whether he was really thinking of hunkering down again after the last fiasco he had. Recalling the experience sent a fresh batch of bile running up his throat before he was even able to bring a hand up to his mouth. The bitter taste brought him back from his musing and he walked through the crowd to the guild doors.

Like the old man used to say,"If any action takes longer than three breaths to decide you might as well not do it."

Harboring the beginnings of a smile he bumped into a child who looked up nervously at the behemoth of a man before his eyes. Avar was certainly not the tallest man in the crowd but he was built in a way that made homes fall apart before him.

"Best get going home, son." He said in the kindest tone he could muster having only gravel where muscles should be.

"Bite me, geezer!" Cussed the boy as he blew him a raspberry and ran into the crowd once more.

Rubbing his chin with a self deprecating look. "Geezer?" he thought. Sure he looked much more worse for wear given his lifestyle but he was only 24 and the words of the child really hit him in a sore spot. "Guess I should shave when I get after I've signed on." He told himself for the umpteenth time despite never getting around to it.

Readjusting the duffel on his back he pushed open the door and walked into his home for the foreseeable future.

....Hopefully.

" thanks for coming Yana, takes 2 hands to rangle them beasts back, stubborn as rocks they can be sometimes ya know? "
she told her smiling. leira and yana were at the pond herding the papaopamus together and bringing them in one by one back to the ranch area. the beasts were all huddled in bunches some by the water drinking and some eating grass. she had to be careful not to let the nice looking pond become stopping ground for these beasts, not after all the hard work that went into fixing up the place. they said here was where skeleton monsters or some sort were coming from. just the thought made her shiver. with to fingers in her mouth she whistled everyone over. the sound she made was first high pitch, then low then high again. strangely enough to an onlooker, only about 3 papaopamus responded. leira whistled again, this time a different tune entirely and another three assembled. group after group lined up for easy transfer.

" So tell me Yana. "
leira couldnt make out why a girl like Yana would be wanting to hangout with a mercenary guild. though she herself was not a mercenary she has gone on some missions, but really animal care was the main job. it was the same with Ella, never did understand what made her come here. then she remembered a rumor from one of her temps a while back. something that young girls come to these places to pick out husbands." Is there someone your interested in at the fort? huh?" that made sense to her, after all, if you cant marry into fortune, at least marry into security or protection, and soldiers and mercenaries were okay money makers and could protect their families. leira had this silly grin. but really she just liked to make conversation, and knowing why a person joined was usually a good way to start.

Archus had never seen the Norhad Swords in such a desperate state as he saw now. In the past there were times of great failure and loss of life, but the company always returned home to recoup and grow from the experience. This time their home had been attacked, there was an uneasiness around the camp. Their charismatic and calming leader, Antarah, was badly wounded from fighting Andromeda. It was a battle Archus wished he could have been there for. Although he provided great use on the field and reconciled his differences with the Lieutenant Sarah, Archus truly believed he could have saved the commander from his bed-ridden fate.

After the fight, Archus was reminded of his previous inclination to report to Antarah what he had witnessed at the pub just beforehand. Now that the context had changed, the Paladin found himself questioning that decision. Was now the time to confront the commander about this? Indeed Belluam had displayed very dangerous qualities on that night and Archus knew it needed to be addressed, he could not bring himself to break that news to the commander in his current state. In addition, Belluam was an excellent second in command and she was needed for the healing process of the Swords. In order to better understand the commander (and as a freelancer he did not have a specific duty in the repair process), the Paladin decided to shadow her for the day. It was not an official agreement, he never even notified her of it, but throughout the day he was always nearby in full battle regalia, watching over her, observing and learning about the woman behind the armor. It would not surprise him if she angrily confronted him about it, she was a hot tempered woman, but so far she had not said a word, or even looked his way.

Now the commander was drilling a large group of mercenaries she deemed were "slacking off". Physical punishment, exercise, manual labor, these were familiar ideas to Archus, who grew up in a monastery. Discipline was of the utmost importance in an outfit where lives were on the line with every single mission. Archus observed how she yelled at the men and women, degraded them . From his position several dozen yards away, he could watch serenely as someone else had to accept her never ending wrath. After the men had been sent on a running mission, Archus could see that Belluam had found a new target. It was someone he did not recognize, which was unsurprising given the flood of new recruits the Swords were forced to accept. Another policy decision the Paladin wholeheartedly disagreed with.

The Paladin acted without thinking, he gripped the hilt of his sword and descended from his hilly perch under a large tree. Though he was not the quiet type, he was unsure anyone could hear him approaching in the presence of the vice commander's voice. The armor clad guardian stood eight or so yards behind the vice commander, his steely gaze fixed on the man, a warning apparent in them.

The man joined up running with the rest of them, he must have known that Belluam was the kind of person you don't argue with unless you're definitely right. And even then it probably isn't worth it.

In the recent days, Donar has been doing his best helping with the recovery efforts of the headquarters, the fight with that women caused a ton of damage and even Commander Antarah was bedridden. He did not like the move The Kingdom Affairs Office did in appointing Lieutenant Miliarium as the acting Commander as it was obviously a Political move in the interest in controlling the Nohrad Swords for their own purposes...

Donar recently received a letter from a certain person inquiring the events, which he gave a report for. Of course this information was secretly sent trying to hide it from the K.O.A lackeys, mostly during one of many missions Donar had taken on, which some would say he was as brutal as ever during those times.. After that the Commander finally woke up and was told of the current state of affairs.

Some new fresh recruits eventually appeared on their radar, or at least he thought they were. Aside from the other things, he had resumed training himself, something he decided after some of the recent missions that otherwise made him look like a fool. He considered himself lacking but he is starting the feel that he was getting back into his peak condition. It even felt like his spirit energy was starting to rise to it's original level.

Thinking of the things that happened, he found himself encountering Lieutenant Miliarium, who more or less can be seen trying to make sure everything was going smoothly.
Not having a chance to talk with her much, he decided to make some small conversation, "Ah, Lieutenant Miliarium." he started, "It seems it wont be long before everything is back in order?" He had to give her some credit, even though she is under the K.O.A she still made some really good progress of things.

Yana looked hesitantly at the papaopamus. It didn't seem like it had wanted to go with her and for all her gentle tugging it wouldn't move. What to do? She didn't want to make it mad at her. Her experience with animals was limited and perhaps she was being overly cautious, but she really didn't want to find out what would happen if she somehow angered the beast. Two hands. her thoughts echoed Leira's instruction as she used both hands to steer the papaopamus in the right direction. Yana was beside herself with excitement when it actually worked. A genuine laugh bubbled out of her "It worked!" she exclaimed smiling back at Leira. "No, Thank you for being so patient with me."

She watched the papaopamus as they drank at the watering hole thinking that she'd never in a million years thought she'd be where she was now. Leira whistled and she watched in fascination as a few of the beasts assembled and again as the process was repeated. Her attention was taken away from the animals as Leira addressed her and the words that came out of the girl's mouth were not at all ones she'd expected. "Interested in someone?" she repeated tilting her head in confusion. Then it dawned on her. "Oh! No, not at all." she shook her head, a little flustered as a slight blush tinted her cheeks. "I'm just, um, here to help out. I'm am--well I suppose I should say was-- an assassin and a thief of sorts..." She trailed off as it occurred to her that telling people that you're a thief may not be something you should easily divulge.

In the wake of a devastating attack by an unknown assailant, Sarah was placed in charge of the Milestone Fortress by the Kingdom Affairs Office with the approval of the King and the Honor Families decision. This was a temporary provision until its real Leader, Antarah was well enough to take back his command. It was obvious to her why she was chosen over the existing Vice Commanders Belluam and Turian. One of them was a foreigner and the other was viewed as a despot of mercenaries. But aside from that neither would be suitable in the eyes of the officials to take command of the Norhad Sword, an armed force inside the nation. There would also be the threat of deviance from the existing limitations placed upon the organization, that Master Antarah wholeheartedly agreed to, but that others may not honor in his absence. So the logical conclusion would be for her to do it, as she has been a part of the organization for a little while now.

Sarah had approved Belluam's request to admit more personal and mercenaries at a faster rate than previously done when Antarah was in Command. While the Vice Commander was preoccupied with their assignments and training, the other Officers were sent on any mission request they could get their hands on. It was not the time to be picky with assignments. Lieutenant Donar was present and remark on the progress the group has made. " Good afternoon Lieutenant." she said formally. " Yes, everything is on schedule. The Kensington Coastliner is due to arrive from its overhaul, and the Great Fox has completed its repairs. Leira says another day or two and the ranches will once again house all our animals...the Commander is recovering slowly as well. "

It was only a few days ago that he regained consciousness. His recovery has been quick, and though he is not yet upright, he sits in his bed reading, at his private tower, under the protection of Knights of the K.A.O. and hand picked Field Captains and their best teams. " He said yesterday, the protection was a bit excessive and unnecessary. Waste of tax money and N.S. Funds." she remarked with a chuckle and sarcastic tone as she did agree with his statement. " Have you and your teams completed the requests from the neighboring town south of here?" she asked. Donar and a few field teams were sent south to a town that had sent a book full of requests.

........did this girl just say that she........ where do they get these crazies......well i am sure she has her story to it....
leira was hoping for some juicy details about someone in the fort but was rather shocked that Yana would say something like that in the open. from what her empath senses were telling her, this girl was telling the truth and didnt seem much confused about it, more like it was almost everday conversation. she did her best in hiding any shock on her face. " ...and you've been doing that all your life huh? " leira asked her. she wasnt sure about it, but she didnt think the norhad swords were in the business of assasinating people or thievery. at least she hoped not. she didnt want to be part of a band of shadowy no goods. she was definitely not of that type.

hearing that from a girl her age made her realize how complicated humans are and how simple animals can be. probably why she preferred or at least was very good with animals compared to humans, cause they were not bad, just acting natural is all. As they walked back to the pond to get another leira asked her something else. " so Yana, do you want to keep doing what you have been doing for the rest of your life? or is there other plans you have? " maybe this would make leira understand yana better. just then she saw grifyn near the water. didnt notice him before but probably because he was seated down and a bunch of papaopamus were huddle around he was hidden. as they got closer she saw he was looking in their direction and shyly waved at him.

Belluam sighed as she pinched the bridge of her nose. She was beginning to get a headache from dealing with the new recruits all day, and then she remembered why Antarah was not as open about recruiting a lot of men... Because they are pain in the ass... Bell thought letting out a depressing escape from her lips. "heh." Belluam decided to let Henevo run a lap before she stopped him. She was surprised by how fast he was... He seemed almost as fast, if not faster than Donar. Donar.... Belluam's thoughts shifted for a moment. "Fukin' pussy.." Bell cussed under her breath. A little while passed before she saw Henevo come around from the corner and to her surprise alone. Belluam smirked. This guy knew how to run.
"Henevo, git yur ass overhear!" Belluam yelled. As he gets closer Belluam starts barking at him again. "I don't know what had gotten im yur head to run but you don't run until I say you run! Do you get me?! You do run a helluva better than any I've ever seen, I'll give you that. But for leaving without my say i want you to get down and give me 50." Belluam paused and turned around to see Archus watching. "Hey preacher come' on down and spot this fellow!" Belluam turned again and began to pace while she spoke with a softer tone this time. "Now Henevo. I would seem that you are a clans man, aye? Now tell me, do you have any knowledge on military structure?" Belluam asked. Her brow wasn't as deeply creased as before. She just seemed tired.

Henvo had finished running before the others. Quite a while, actually. None of the men had passed him while he was running, as a matter of fact, he'd passed a few of them. The sharp bark of the alpha called him back, and he did as he was told. "You do run a helluva better than any I've ever seen, I'll give you that. But for leaving without my say i want you to get down and give me 50." She said. Henvo hesitated, not initially understanding the order, then recalled that she had given it to the other men earlier. Amoungst them there was grumbling about "pushups." This is what they were called, apparently.

Once again, the strange ritual of moving oneself up and down by their arms proved no challenge for Henvo. He only weighed about a hundred and fourty pounds, and he could carry even more than that on his own. The alpha becan pacing, and soon enough Henvo had counted to fifty in his head.

"You are a clansman, aye?" The alpha asked. Not knowing entirely what a clansman was, as one could call themselves such a strange thing as "leatherworker" when leather didn't work, or "blacksmith" when one was not black (reguardless of what a smith was), Henvo answered the question to the best of his abilities. He was neither a man, nor part of a clan, so he grunted and pointed a finger towards the far distant mountains. "I come from the North," he said simply, dropping his hand. He noted that out of the corner of his eye, a man who he had not run past was standing behind the alpha. He wore the thing humans called "armor," and quite a bit more of it than the alpha. Henvo blinked once, as he reasoned someone wearing such heavy apparel would not need to run. Just like the alpha, this man must be important, but not as much as the alpha, as he stood behind her like a young pup behind its mother in a rainstorm.

"Do you have any knowledge of military structure?" The alpha asked this time, but differently. Softer, less harshly, as if the bite was stolen from her words. Once again, Henvo hesitated, as he struggled to find the meaning behind the unfamiliar language. He had no idea what a military was, or how it was built. "Hmm," he said, rubbing an open hand on the side of his cheek, "No beast can live without its legs. Creatures must move fast, and strike while they have the upper hand. A military must be the same, yes?" The last bit was a genuine question, Henvo had no idea how many legs a military was supposed to have, or how many wheels rather, as that is what seemed to carry humans around in contraptions called "wagons". However, Henvo was confident in all the words he had spoken, and it would take even a master in the art of bullshittery some time to tell if he was genuinely curious about this "military" object.

Avar's immediate surroundings were strangely familiar to him. The thrumming of the Earth beneath his feet as warriors in training moved to a single, rhythmic beat. The dance of war.
So caught up was Avar, that he almost got run over by the very source of the vibrations themselves and hastily ran past their set path. Now going at a jogging pace he made his way deeper into the compound and away from the direct site of practice. He decided that the first order of business was to recognize someone of a higher post and report in for duty. Nothing indicated that they were taking on men however since no table was set up nor stands with forms.

Holding his hands above his eyes to block out the sun as he surveyed the grounds, his eyes met with two of the more standout figures. A military type in armor who was apparently giving orders to a recruit or trainee?

Deciding that it was as good a guess as any he hustled past some more marching groups and made his way closer to the two in question. On approach he caught the last bits of their conversation.

"No beast can live without its legs. Creatures must move fast, and strike while they have the upper hand. A military must be the same, yes?" said the ...

White hair? First time I'm seeing another one of those. In his haste he'd neglected to study the other man.

"Well to be fair, I have seen snakes that move as fast as lightning when they wish. Not to mention the one's that seem to glide across the water's surface like skimming stones. I'd gladly trade both legs for abilities like that!" He grinned at his fellow snow-peaked comrade before flexing a barrel of an arm.

"But not my arms. These I wouldn't trade for the gift of flight itself." He finished before locking eyes with the lady in the armor with the authoritative aura. Boss lady confirmed.

"Avar Pendergast! Reporting in, Ma'am. I hear there's a war to win?" he bellowed in the loudest voice his lungs would allow him.

"Ah...yeah...for the most part." Yana replied hesitantly unsure of what to say to fix things. Leira had tried to hide her shock from Yana, but the girl had noticed the fleeting expression before it could be hidden. She wondered if she had said to much and decided that she'd avoid being completely honest with people in the future. It was a lesson learned but she still couldn't help but feel a little self conscious about making the mistake in the first place. There was silence as they walked back to the pond and Yana found herself hoping that she hadn't made Leira dislike her with her candidness. Relief flooded her chest when she heard the animal lover speak again.

"The plan is to keep my promise and live a good life." she said assuredly. "My asassi--um...former days are behind me and I'm just attempting to build a new life." The strawberry blonde offered. She stopped there thinking it best that she not say much more until she could determine what was proper and what was not when she noticed Leira waving to someone. Without thinking Yana half-hid behind her, she wasn't exactly confident in her social skills after the way things had gone.

Archus initially was not surprised that Belluam had found even more ways to be generally offensive. To a Paladin, being called a "preacher" was like a footsoldier being called a recruitment officer. They both belonged to the same organization, but served vastly different functions. Even further than that, no priest in the Holyland Alliance would ever go by "preacher". The armored guardian took a step closer and almost raised his hand in protest, but then he realized the Vice Commander had already forgotten about him and returned to barking at the other devil dogs. She was relentlessly aggressive to everyone around her. On one level, she was interesting to examine. What was it that caused her to feel the need to assert her authority in such an obtuse and obnoxious manner, Archus wondered? Did she not remember him from the past? They were both younger, certainly, and Archus weighed about thirty pounds less back then; he was still large enough to go by the nickname "tower" though.

The zealous nature and eagerness of the recruits was off-putting to the Paladin. They were sellswords, mercs like the rest. They might have had fighting capabilities unique to them, individual lives and stories, but each of them was corrupt and filled with the wrong intentions. It was only because of these recruits that Archus realized he felt a sharp distinction between them and Belluam. Although on the surface, and perhaps deeper, they were similar in nature- mercenaries, living by the sword, not particularly pious or religious at all- he felt a protectiveness of Belluam, a loyalty to her that proved deeper than his obligations to Antarah. It was an entirely foreign and almost unwelcome feeling. Archus knew it would require intense prayer and reflection, but it felt like... comradery. Was that possible though, he wondered? To feel such a hidden connection to those he knew so little about and shared so little with, other than the experience of fighting along side one another-those whom he didn't particularly like even- it was a strange feeling to be sure.

So the Paladin stepped beside Belluam to "spot" the athletic mercenary. His real mission was a much simpler one though, to merely be present beside her. A quiet guardian of the Swords, he said nothing. One hand at his side, the other resting on the hilt of his blade. His gaze was distant.

As he was being told about the current status, he though to himself that they were very lucky to get the damages they got, because it could have been many times worse.
"That is pretty good news. I admit I was worried that the damages were as bad as they looked, but gratefully we seem to have competent people helping us out."

When she talked about the commander, he wore a half smile replying, "He must be very well on his way to recovery if he talks of such things."

"As for the missions, they went without much trouble. Of course, I trained myself back into form after realizing my faults with that other mission I won't speak of. So you should not have to worry anymore." He mostly referred to the time of that morgog siege when he more or less realized that he was severely weaker and fearful back then, so he trained himself back into his peak and purposely asked for difficult missions.

"I have sent the reports to the Main office for review." he stated.

Sarah expected as much from Lieutenant Donar. He was, after all, a properly trained military soldier and officer. She felt it was the right decision to have the Vice-Commanders stay at the fortress and help with training and repairs, and to send the lieutenant to complete the much needed work outside these walls. " Excellent, I will review the reports later on today. " she told him. Sarah asked Donar to walk with her as they would make their way to the outer courtyard. She explained about a new letter from the Kingdom Affairs Office that arrived that morning. Apparently the Oxfam Outpost has had its defenses probed a few times ever since the incident and the first encounter with the Morgogs. Because of the threat of Bands of Morgogs roaming the coastal side, the militia has been spread thin to protect the hamlets there, but leaving only 20 men at the outpost. " We need to reinforce that position and also, actively seek these monsters and destroy them."

She handed him the letter and another paper and explained the details about the mission would be found inside it. For obvious reasons, she was unable to go, as acting Commander of the Fortress, her duties lie with protecting the homestead. " Because of our need, we have not turned away any help, but that may lead to a lack of quality in the mercenary forces we use. We need to put the new recruits through the paces. lieutenant. Get the Vice-commander Belluam to pick out a few to accompany you. " she said. Before turning away, she pulled out two medal emblems. " I discussed this with the Commander about new appointments to the officer ranks. Please give this one, to Captain Archus Barriye. And this one to Second Officer Leira Laramy. My congratulations to them. "

...........geezz guess it takes all sorts huh..... yana is what... my age but probably had a harder life than me and probably seen more than me too.... dunno if i should look up to her or feel sorry for her........

leira was not too easygoing about assassinations, or murders, revenge killings or killing in general. she never took a life, at least not human. she would take the lives of animals cause she could tell they were in great pain due to her senses about them. giving them a swift death was a very humane thing to do in her opinion, but when it came to people, she didnt know if she could do it, even if it was a super evil person and did not deserve to live at all and that would kill people anytime anywhere, she always believed she would freeze doing that.

........ a promise huh.......

leira wondered about this promise. who was it for? someone close to her. maybe a dying friend, or family member. yana said she was trying to turn over a new leaf, and leira thought she would try and help her with that. " well, caring for animals is not as exciting compared to what you did before maybe, but its a challenge and good one and makes us happy~! at least for me. aint that right ya ball of fur." leira said tapping the head of the papaopamus gently. the animal grunted and almost looked like it nodded but really was just bobbing its head walking and all that.

changing the subject, leira asked yana about her room. " so yana, did you sort out your room? I mean, you got all the furniture you needed?

Crap... Was the first thought that came to Belluam's mind when he heard Henevo's question. He just another clueless clansman... Belluam had crossed her arms and frowned as dealing with this sort was always an annoyance. As Belluam was about to speak another tall old looking man came up and remarked on what Henevo asked. Belluam started to get agitated. She was trying not to burst into a raging inferno again as she had to lead by example for the fresh mercs. But it was difficult.

"Well to be fair, I have seen snakes that move as fast as lightning when they wish. Not to mention the one's that seem to glide across the water's surface like skimming stones. I'd gladly trade both legs for abilities like that!" The old man grinned at Henevo.
"But not my arms. These I wouldn't trade for the gift of flight itself." He finished before locking eyes with Belluam.
"Avar Pendergast! Reporting in, Ma'am. I hear there's a war to win?" he bellowed in the loudest voice his lungs would allow him.

Belluam then glared daggers at the apparent new sign Norhad Sword. "Aye, so that's your name?" Belluam said in a sarcastic manner. She then grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him down bringing him to her level as he was quite the tall man. "Now tell me where an old fart like you gets the balls to cut into a Commanding officers conversation!" Belluam said as her volume was gradually being raised into a crescendo. Belluam finally noticed Archus and grinned a wicked grin. then stared back at the old man. "Now for undermining your commander I wast you to sprint down and back the entire fort as fast as humanly possible! And then when your done ima make damned sure ya get the lousiest, ole' rottin room we got in da fort just fur ya." Belluam smiled. "Now git yur as a'movin!" Belluam said letting go of Avar's shit and smacking his firm buttocks. "Oh and ah Archus." Bell turned to the paladin. "For being such a good boy all the time i guess you wouldn't mind showing him to his quarters after would ya?" Belluam put a hand on Archus's Shoulder. "And maybe make sure he doesn't make the same mistake?"

Belluam spun around back to Henevo. "Well im off to get this guy situated." Belluam said to Archus. Belluam began walking off before looking back at Henvo. "Lets go dog we don't have all day. oh and Archus... Thanks." Then with that Belluam was off. As Belluam walked she couldnt help but let out a laugh. She knew she was cruel sometimes but it was just to damned funny to haze recruits... Belluam put a hand on Henevo's shoulder and looked at him in the eye. "Now listen here. I know your not gonna understand alot of words we people say, but just follow this simple rule. Do what is say exactly how i say it. If i say kill a man, you kill him or if i say to drop you drop. Got it?"

Avar felt the slightly aghast when she pulled him down to her level. Partially at her strength, even though he didn't resist the tug he felt the compulsion of it as it strained the fabric of his clothing. But majorly in part with her almost tearing off his shirt at their first meeting, which would have been bad given the fact that it was the only one he had on him.

"Now tell me where an old fart like you gets the balls to cut into a Commanding officers conversation!" She yelled into his face as he winced and kept his mouth shut. A defensive reaction after years of military discipline from various armies. As the saying went,"Your teeth may not be brittle, but best avoid the spittle!".

She'd stayed latched on forcing him remain in position longer than he'd have preferred. Seizing his chance, he wiped his face with a hand just as she turned to face another heavily armored man who stood in solemn brooding. He quickly brought the arm down to his side as she set her gaze on him once more.

A part of him wanted to correct her on the matter of his age but he shrugged off the thought. Arguing would be wasted on her, if not condemning. Better to perform well with their expectations of me as an older man. While he wasn't the fastest man by a long shot he had strength and stamina unheard of among his usual peers.

"Now for undermining your commander I wast you to sprint down and back the entire fort as fast as humanly possible! And then when your done ima make damned sure ya get the lousiest, ole' rottin room we got in da fort just fur ya." She ordered him without missing a beat, his eyes following the path she described with a twinge of internal regret. "Oh and ah Archus." He heard her say something to the knight but was steadily getting further and further away from them as he ran. Kicking at the dirt below his feet and getting more comfortable with the pacing.

The soldiers didn't give him any odd glances so he could only assume she was like this normally. He dropped his bag midway near a training dummy so he spared himself the extra load. Feeling the moments stretch on as he felt his unused muscles stretch and relax repeatedly in synchronous harmony. Running past groups of loud soldiers at least proved informative. A few repeated names stuck with him. The big kahuna of the bunch at this level comprised of Belluam. The men she had been with weren't mentioned in enough detail for him to sure of them.

Lacking the spare oxygen to commit to thinking further on it he entered a state of playing to replace boredom he felt. One foot then the next. Next foot to the one. After a good amount of sweating he felt a bump against his leg. His eyes snapped into focus and he looked down to see his bag and feel his stationary feet start to throb. Choosing not to dally any longer he picked it up and found himself back to his starting point ... only to see her and the other recruit missing.

Having only the solemn knight to speak to exchange words with he said."F-finished Sir!" he almost coughed out a lung as his dry throat plagued him."What's next?" he made a small grin but had the good sense to look down while doing it.

Henvo shrugged as the other, larger man adressed him. Apparently his name was Avar. He'd put in his thoughts, but the alpha didn't seem to be pleased. Then again, in the short time he'd known her, she didn't ever seem pleased. The other man seemed to be just as fast as him, he'd keep that in mind for future reference.

"Let's go dog, we don't have all day," the alpha said adressing him, his ears twitched in response. He noted that the other one wearing the metal skin was named Archus. What strange names these humans had. Avar, Archus, how did they tell the difference with so similar sounding names? Then again to be fair, his brothers names, Metal Noise, Battle cry, Rough Voice, and his, Steel Song, probably all sounded the same to these humans in his guttural tounge.

Henvo's rough fir stood on end, a warning of impending physical contact. He shifted at the last moment, so that the hand touched his leather armor instead of his skin. He didn't know what would happen if the humans found he wasn't as he appeared, but he didn't think it would be good. The hand landed, and Henvo realized it was the alpha.

"Do exactly what I say exactly how I say it. If I say kill a man, you kill him. If I say drop, you drop. Got it?" The alpha was uncomfortably close to his face, her nose almost touching him. Henvo dropped his gaze as a sign of respect. Such actions would be common sense, afterall, that is how the Ferus acted. This is how they functioned. His respect for this woman grew tremendously. "Yes, alpha," Henvo said, "Much blood will be spilt as you say. Many enemies will fall as you say. For the honor of the pack, so our voices may carry across the world. My voice will be the loudest, if you so will it." No sooner had the words left his mouth than Avar came back, breathing heavily and sweating profusely. Henvo drew his head back a bit. There was a lot of things about humans, but the water that came from their skin was probably something he would never get used to.

Hardly ten minutes after Belluam initially began drilling new recruits, Archus was already getting tired of her attitude. The way she emptied her lungs in people's faces, how she degraded and humiliated the mercenaries, it came across as all very crude and unnecessary to him. He held a respect for discipline and order, but Belluam's inflated tirades always irritated the Paladin. Even an older recruit was not spared from her wrath, as he approached and investigated what his ears had led him to.

Archus usually felt quite old around the fort, with all the young sellswords looking for gold and glory through blood. Their youthful ambition and ignorance wore at his sense of his own age. But this man, Avar, appeared so old that Archus found himself wondering what he was doing here, as a new recruit in a mercenary organization. Archus had seen old mercenaries before, but they were usually elite officers or desk lieutenants; established men and women with a reputation for still being alive after their voluminous campaigns in the name of money. For some reason, Belluam chose to engage the Paladin in the situation, though Archus was certain she had not spoken to him since years before when they were both serving in the Swords.

The steel guardian was surprised when she deigned to make contact with him, as she placed her hand on his armored pauldron he reacted only by locking eyes with her. Others would likely be intimidated by the grasp of Belluam Sansuis, but both Archus and Belluam knew that he harbored no fear of her in his heart. He nodded at her half request, half order. She would not order him around like the others for two reasons. He was not a mercenary, and they had fought once before. It didn't turn out well for either of them.

After she left with the strange new recruit Henvo, Archus stood watch as he waited for "Avar" to return to him. This would be the first time he ever spoke to a new recruit. By merely existing, most of them offended Archus, he had no desire to interact with them. Avar came running back to the Paladin, who was rather unimpressed, unsurprised, and uninterested by his physical condition.

"F-finished Sir!" he almost coughed out a lung as his dry throat plagued him."What's next?" he made a small grin but had the good sense to look down while doing it.

Archus was still entirely distracted by thinking about Belluam and their past, he hardly noticed Avar's voice. After a minute or so his brain processed what Avar said and Archus properly focused on him for the first time, "You can cut the military pedantry around me, Avar. I am not a career mercenary like most of the lot here. My name is Archus Barriye, a Paladin of the Holyland Alliance." He made no effort to acknowledge that it was a greeting, it was more of a mandatory semantic he knew he had to get out of the way. He rose a steel clad arm and pointed it behind him to the massive castle complex behind them. "Belluam asked me to show you the merc quarters... I don't think she was serious about giving you the worst of them though... maybe..."

ENGAGEMENT SCENARIO

  • Date: Eclasen 16th 997 C.Y.A.D.
Location: Forgotten Hamlet, South of Oxfam Outpost
    TIMESKIP IN EFFECT

On the evening of Eclasen 15th, Acting-Commander Miliarium assigned Vice Commander Belluam to select a group for an assignment request by the Kingdom Affairs Office. Her field team were to locate and exterminate a roaming pack of Highland Wargs, that have been plaguing the nearby Hamlets and traveling caravans. These incidents happened shortly after the attack on the Outpost of the region and some have speculated a grander scheme at work. For that reason, there have been requests to strengthen the Outposts meager 20 man unit. In answer to that need, Sarah had sent with Belluam's team a larger group of militia who will take over from the men currently there.

The following day at dawn, all selected were to report NSS Defiant for transport to the locations. The itinerary was to drop off the mercenary unit first, at a desolated hamlet in the middle of the Norhad Plains, south of the Outpost and then the vessel would carry the militia to Oxfam where they would disembark and load up the militia being relieved. By that time, it would late night, and the ship would then return to Headquarters. The desolate hamlet would serve as a great centralized location to hunt the beasts, and a decent camp for the team. A scout ship was on standby at the docks to return to the hamlet on the 18th or sooner should an emergency communication were to be sent.

The group was given 2 days worth of food supplies, camping gear and a small arsenal of extra handheld weapons.

The cold rain bore down on the Norhad Swords as they set up a field headquarters in the desolated hamlet. Archu Barriye stood outside of some sort of grain storage structure, watching carefully down the dirt road that ran past the granary into the village. Of all the buildings in the hamlet, the granary was the least destroyed and large enough to house the supplies for the field headquarters. Its location was also strategically significant, being outside of the hamlet meant a clearer view of the surrounding territory, less chance of an ambush here. The Paladin was not too concerned with an ambush during the daytime though, Wargs were intelligent pack hunters and no tall grass in the world could conceal one of the massive beasts on approach. If they chose to surprise the mercenaries, they would attack by night time.

As the wind weathered away the stalwart steel guardian, he reflected on the turn of events prior to their arrival in the destroyed hamlet. On his way back to the NS barracks with Avar, a messenger intercepted them. "Message for you sir, your eyes only." The courier said, wary of the Paladin's company. Archus snatched the envelope out of the messenger's hands and bid him on his way. Not caring much for the privacy of the message (as he could see it was not from the Holyland Alliance due to the seal), he tore it open on the walk back to the barracks and read its brief contents. The Paladin was surprised to find that he had been nominated for promotion by the standing lieutenant Sarah Milliarium. He became immediately suspicious of her motives. The Holyland Alliance was often at odds with the kingdom of Welwyn. The power and influence of the church was rarely used for the good of any state (as is forbidden in church doctrine), so its ends often resulted in losses for the various kingdoms the organization operated in. Due to this understanding of the political situation, and his desire to remain a neutral party contacted to Antarah instead of the Norhad Swords, Archus chose to reject the promotion.

The Paladin was happy to discover that the next major mission he was apart of did not involve politics whatsoever (to his knowledge). The Warg hunt, although immensely dangerous, was a noble cause and would be a good initial mission to weed out the mercenaries who wouldn't cut it for tougher and longer campaigns. The mercenaries that were chosen for the mission loaded into the NSS Defiant along with their orders, their gear, and kingdom militia forces. It was a cramped ride and most of the passengers had never experienced air flight before, which caused some very displeasing results on the trip. Mostly brooding and contemplative of his would-be promotion, Archus remained silent during the entire journey. He was relieved when they landed at the destroyed hamlet, but the weather was miserable. After an initial scouting of the village, the leadership decided that the granary was the best choice to station the field headquarters.

Archus had very limited experience fighting wargs, but he understood their potential. Survivors of warg engagements never seemed to describe them as an easy fight, they often had wicked scars to remember them by. The Paladin equipped his spear for this mission as well as his usual long sword. For a beast the size of a warg, he would need reach and the ability to defend and attack in the same stance. After everything was close to being sorted out in the granary, watch posts were set up in a perimeter around the village, as well as a few in a semi circle around the granary in the fields opposite the village. On their descent into the hamlet and during the scouting, Archus could not help but notice how utterly wretched and destroyed the place was, which caused him to wonder if wargs were the only thing that attacked. For the time being he stood watch outside of the field HQ, waiting for further orders and ready for anything that would come his way. He was not sure many of the new recruits would make it through the first encounter.

Avar scratched absentmindedly at his groin. The new armor he had to wear was a bit tight and, after the long march to the village, the chafing had gotten to the point of more than mild irritation. Luckily his shirt and pants were thin enough to create a sort of buffer preventing direct contact to the clearly maintained gear they'd dolled out in a hurry to the new additions.

Still he couldn't complain. Better some armor than none. Having lost his previous pair not too long ago still annoyed him. Luckily he had the good sense to keep his broadsword off the betting table. A man isn't completely foolish you know? He did however make it a point to track down the winner of the night and planned to have a rematch the moment he was able... also when he had something worth gambling again.

The officials seemed a bit stiff and the rest a bit too lax. That's how he knew they weren't in for an easy time. A well planned out distribution of forces was presented to them and roles were chosen or handed out. He spotted Archus and Bellaum giving out instructions and wondered what she'd done with the other recruit she shanghaied. Hopefully the poor bastard was still alright.

A few more unique individuals could be spotted but this wasn't exactly the time for chit-chat. Raising his arm he said,"I'd like to volunteer for tribut- I mean I'm fine with being on the first watch." His offer to be one of those on watch at the perimeter was unanimously approved, no surprise there, which brought him to the current point of time.

An itchy crotch, standing in second-hand armor and soon to face off against a horde of Wargs.

Yup ... great decision making points to Avar.

It did not take a while for Grifyn and the rest of the crew, as well as newcomers, be assigned to another mission. It was not unexpected, after all, things have been rather hectic for the Norhad Swords, ever since the night when that crazy pale lady launched an assault at the fortress.

The task this time was to eliminate a plague of Wargs that have caused great reckoning on an unfortunate hamlet, where they have been dropped off. The day had just began, and things had already to look against their favor. It was raining,
making it slightly difficult to move, as well as see, and the land turns difficult to observe.

Assignments had began to be assigned to a number of individuals - some were to stand guard on their temporary base of operations, and some were to scour the area and search for clues. Grifyn was one of the latter. After taking a shortt preparatory routine, Grifyn was off to do his job.

Instead of going with a group, as expected in the protocol, Grifyn scurried off alone. He never found a reason why to work with others in things such as these, conflicting ideas tend to sidetrack the entire group anyway.

The area was rather desolate. There were ruins everywhere, scattered debris, and even a number blood stains left all around the area. The ground was was grassy, but due to the rain, the soil were easily mushed, causing tracks to be left behind, almost as if it was mud. With this in mind, Grifyn tried to find tracks belonging to Wargs.

It should be easy. Those were large dog-like creatures, so their footprints should be shaped like a dog's paw, only bigger. And with Grifyn's skills, he easily found them. Unfortunately, most of them had already been eroded by the rain, and most likely are no longer valid of informational use.

Until the wind blew his wet hair, causing him to forcefully comb it backwards with his hands. In that very moment, he noticed a something small glimmering near him. He cautiously inched towards it, and once near enough, he had seen what it truly was - a small skull, with a few blood stains here and there, but are being washed away by the rain. He knelt down on one knee, and reached towards it. Using his hand to examine it, he had come to an assumption that this belong to an unfortunate child, who became a prey of those Wargs.

But more than that, he found out the reason as to why it glimmered in the midst of the sun's rays.

It was coated in a slightly fresh saliva of a Warg. The slimy look, and the sticky feel were the only things Grifyn needed to know it was true.

He stood up, and removed the tiny amount saliva on his hand by letting the rain wash it away. He then, tried to search for tracks around the area of the small skull.

And unfortunately, he found a number of them, leading further away from where he was.
