The Princess and the Servant

Binnie Ryman

Long may she reign
Princess Adelaide sat just outside the palace, yet far away from the gates of the palace, so no one in the village would be able to see her. Adelaide's parents had always kept a close eye on her and had never let her out of the palace walls. And since she had three older brothers, Adelaide most likely would never get the throne, so Adelaide's parent's had decided not to announce her birth. The only people who knew of Adelaide's existence were the royal family, their servants and a few nobles, though not many, since Adelaide was never allowed to attend any balls, something which she had always wanted to do. She had been taught how to dance since she was little and never had any use for the skill.

Macon sat in the back of a horse-drawn carriage, nervous and mad at himself. "Stealing those two loaves of bread was a bad idea," he thought. "But at least it isn't prison!"he thought as he stared out the back of the wooden carriage. He was not happy about having to leave his family to do some "prissy" royal's labor for them. He then turned to see the castle, large and majestic, filed with people in expensive clothes and guards.

Adelaide saw the carriage approach. She knew her mother wouldn't want her socializing with whoever was in that carriage. Whoever it was, was probably unaware of Adelaide's existence, most people weren't. Not knowing many people had made Adelaide extremely shy. She didn't have many people to talk to. The only people she had to talk to were her parents, her siblings, and her servants. Yet her servants still treated Adelaide like the princess she was, no matter how Adelaide insisted they were friends

Macon began to smirk. "This place is huge!"he muttered to himself "I could get used to living here! ". As the carriage got closer to giant stone castle, he noticed a few people scurrying around in identical uniforms, not armored or expensive looking. He decided that they must be the servants. The royal-looking people in the crowd, on the other hand, looked relaxed and didn't even seem to notice the servants buzzing around, nor did they seem to care. Macon wondered if he would have to serve of of those royals outside, because they had plenty of servants already. The carriage then pulled into the castle's first gate.

Adelaide stayed sitting outside the place. She saw a carriage approaching and was curious to see who it would be. Whoever it was had likely never heard of Adelaide. She was practically invisible in the royal family. Her parents all said it was in the name of love.

Macon continued to smirk as the carriage entered the castle. He was, after all, not expecting the castle to be this big, as it always looked smaller in the distance, the only view he had seen it from. "Even the servants here must of had large rooms," he thought happily. His thoughts were interrupted by a gruff voice saying,"Here ya are, ya new home!"the voice continued,"Ain't it beautiful?" Macon replied quickly,"Yes, yes sir, it is!" He was then led to the fitting room, where he was given his new, rough, uncomfortable uniform. The uniform was rough to the touch, but brown and inconspicuous, perfect for a servant, as a servant would not be the center of attention anytime soon. He was also given shoes, nothing remarkable, and indeed, every bit of clothing he was given was the most plain stuff he had ever seen.
