the scholarship kid
mack.
Mack was still stuck, and barely able to make it to the door since she couldn't really see with her damp shirt refusing to come off, but she soon felt Rory's taller frame behind her, guiding her hands back down so her shirt stayed on. She would have made a sound of protest, if it hadn't been for Sabrina's voice, and sudden presence in the pool room.
Fortunately, Mack stayed silent and let Rory deal with the problem. Maybe she was sobering up, or maybe she knew subconsciously that now wasn't the time to let her intoxication get the best of her. She remained silent as Rory snapped at Sabrina and took her hand for the umpteenth time that night, leading her away from there and out of the house completely. The party was still in full swing, the sound of music filling her ears all of a sudden, but it was gone almost as quickly as they made their way outside.
She leaned against the side of Rory's jeep as he opened up the back and grabbed some clothes that he soon handed to her. Mack was still in a bit of a daze, and admittedly feeling sleepier by the second. Her eyelids felt heavy, but she kept herself awake because of how uncomfortable she was in the wet clothes. It was cold too, which wasn't ideal for an impromptu swimming session.
"Thanks." Mack happily returned Rory's smile as she grabbed the clothes and crawled into the back seat. A few minutes later, she was feeling much better, and warmer. Rory's letterman jacket, while big for her, was definitely serving its purpose by shielding her from the cold.
Now comfortable, Mack crawled into the passenger seat and sat there, waiting for Rory, since she just assumed they weren't going back to the party. Mack didn't want to anyway. It was nicer out here. Quiet. She may or may not be coming down from the high, or it was probably just going to knock her out pretty soon.
Once Rory was changed and had joined her up front, she looked over at him, her head still resting back against the seat lazily. "You're a good guy," she told him, her tone soft, revealing that she wasn't as intoxicated anymore. Maybe Sabrina's presence sobered her up, or the fact that Rory was being... well, very un-Rory. Truth be told, she didn't know what he was actually like. She just made assumptions. "I shouldn't have been so quick to judge. After yesterday... I was worried you'd do something to try and get back to me but all you've done today is be nice."
So maybe not totally sober. She was just hitting her sappy, truth-talking phase.
