So mages are both with their magical abilities, witches are not? How does a witch or wizard usually gain their magical abilities?

Through a source such as ancestry, sacrifice, or crystals. Witches inherit the ability to use these sources through lineage, whereas sorcerers are spontaneous and usually born to nonmagical parents

No they naturally exist in this time, but don't practice publicly in fear of persecution ie the witch trials or something similar
Their magic is comparable to the ancients, but their worldly knowledge is much greater because they naturally exist in this time
If by bad you mean less capable, they should be about even with ancients in a fashion that each has a similar amount of pros and cons
If you meant inherently inclined towards evil, that depends on the individual, much like just about any race. A large part about this story is the incorporation of ethics and personal judgement more than any obvious underlying motive, leaving the consequences of each decision to their own
