The Oracle (modern/fantasy)

Erin was about to answer Carrie but she saw the light comming from her room. She handed Carrie the blankets and walked into her room. Picking up the book she felt heat raidiating from the leather and the pages. "I dont freak easily..." she said opening the blinding book wondering what she would see this time. She looked back at Carrie before flipping the pages.

Carrie stood closely next to her as they peered into the book.

The pages shimmered, letters and symbols trembled violently, as if they were trying to jump off the page. The light became so bright, it was nearly blinding.

There was a sudden rush of cold air all around them, nearly arctic. Carrie shivered and shielded her eyes.

"E-Erin, what's going on?" she asked as the room became enveloped in the bright, almost painful light. Everything around them started to ripple as if underwater. The floor quaked as if it would give way, like an earthquake hit only her apartment. Books from the shelves began to fall to the floor and glasses in the other room fell and shattered in the kitchen.

"Close it!" she squealed.

Erin could not close the book, it had... some sort of spell forcing her muscles to not respond to the order's her mind had called... She stood there as if nothing was happening. Entranced by the book and the light of the moving symbols the world around them stared to melt into another.

"...Erin...." Carrie sat up. beautiful sun beams trickled through thick tall pine trees. the sounds of birds and warm air surrounded them. She shook Erin's shoulder who still lay in the grass unconscious. The book open and in between them.

"...Erin wake up!" she shuddered again.

Erin's mind was clouded and a violent pounding erupted from behind her closed eyes. "Erin Wake up!" Erin heard the voice of her friend in her fogged mind. Erin sat up and pressed both palms into her eye sockets to push back at the pressure. "Shit that hurts" She hissed painfully, she hated the pain of headaches. "I need a coffee" She muttered before setting her right arm down and opening her right eye to look at her friend, "Where are we?" she muttered to herself.

She scoffed and looked around carefully.

"...I don't think we're getting a coffee anytime soon that's for sure..." she mumbled.

Seeming to be in the middle of a thick pine forest, Carrie stood up and balanced herself against one of the trees. She took in a few slow breaths as she looked around at the area.

"more importantly, how the hell did we get here and HOW do we get home?" she trembled, "this is a dream, it has to be."

the book lay blank and empty next to Erin, complete with no more literature, no more glowing. A plain, blank, worthless book.

Erin looked from Cassie to the book beside her and grabbed it. She flipped the worn yellowing pages. She sighed and stood, the book clutched in her hand closed, "If this were a dream you or I could control it. Conversation wouldn't be heard but known." She said wincing and rubbing the bridge of her nose, "and I would feel no pain" this was added last as finally she looked around studying the land around her.

A thick, endless pine forest. fresh clean air, warm sunshine and peacefulness..it was unreal. Especially the two moons high in the sky, illuminated by the suns light. Carrie nearly fainted each time she thought about that book.

"Erin...please...how are you so calm? We just stepped into the damn twilight zone..we could die! who cares about coffee!?"

with her squeaks a flock of what looked to be birds fluttered out of the surrounding trees.

Erin stood up and sighed, "I'd rather stay in a calm state of mind than to lose myself when I freak." She said deep down she was asking frantic questions but knew someone had to keep a level head. Erin held the book under her arm and watched the strange flock flow out of the tree line. The moons were strange but something told her this was 'Normal' for this place. They could have been teleported to a new planet or universe or even dimension for all she knew. She had to plan 2 steps ahead to keep herself from going crazy, "Keep your guard up, Carrie and try to calm your mind." She said to her friend.

Carrie nodded. "R-right..."

She looked around at this strange world. Thought everything was so welcoming and peaceful looking, there were still obvious dangers.

It would be dark in a few hours, guessing...the sun was bright but was quickly headed towards the horizon. Something about nighttime however felt daunting - as if it would be much more sinister when the dark came. Carrie took in a few more deep breaths and was ready to move on.

"Which way should we go?" she asked.
