Pearl was breathless as she returned to her Sapphire's side, "Your Clarity, your message was delivered to the Emerald before her flight, just as you wished it." Though, the Emerald was adamant that pearls aren't reliable messengers, she hoped the Gem would take Sapphire's warning seriously. The last thing she wanted was for Sapphire to waste her efforts. She always worked so hard. "Is there anything else I can do...?"
"Thank you, Pearl." As much as she wanted to focus on her numerous tasks, there was much more on her mind. She was relying on Pearl much more than usual, sending her out as soon as she returned. She was starting to feel...guilty. She saw herself ask, "Do you know why I'm having you run all these errands?" And she saw Pearl say--
"Because...I need to prove myself. It was my fault. I overstepped, and I--and we--"
"Shh...It's nothing like that, Pearl. This isn't punishment." She knew Pearl would blame herself. She knew she would act so strangely, and make her upset. She knew. So, why couldn't she stop herself? "Listen. Pearl. Because you helped me, I'm ahead of schedule. We can...go somewhere, and talk."
She waited, for her judgement, for her visions of a shattered pearl--but, it didn't come. She wasn't ready for relief just yet, but, she stopped wringing the bottom hem of her skirt and stood straighter. "Oh... If you wish, Your Clarity."
Off Homeworld, Sapphire needed to be escorted by guards and permissions often needed to be granted to use galaxy warps. So, they stayed on Homeworld, so they could be alone. Really alone, with no gem walls or other surveillance. It was at these times, Sapphire and Pearl felt most at peace--but, that was before they fused. Now, there was an uneasy air lingering over them. Unsure of how this will play out, neither of them felt confident enough to speak out.
"We're alone, now...it's okay."
"It's not okay...I put you in danger. If someone saw us, you could've been broken for my mistake. I shouldn't even be here! I should just--"
"Pearl...all we did was hold hands. If I didn't see it coming, how could you have expected such an outcome?" She looked up at Pearl for a moment, "I haven't stopped thinking about it. I've never fused before. Everything....is different now. My course has changed."
"--It doesn't have to be different. It doesn't have to change! If you're satisfied with me, we can just go back to how things were. I can keep serving you, My Sapphire." That was the best case scenario, wasn't it?
"I want to try it again." She said it. Oh stars, she said it.
"Oh my stars."
"Aren't you curious?"
"I...--Do you want me to be, My Sapphire?"
"I predict that you will open up to me, Pearl. Please don't make me ask again."
They stood in silence for what felt like hours. Pearl stepped closer, and took Sapphires hands into her own. For a moment, everything felt okay. And then they fused.
"We're...we're back."
