Survival, fixing it, it really depends on the actions your character takes. You're completely free to take any approach you think works

Cool! How does magic work in this setting?

Depends on the type of magic you want actually! I would say most magic is more or less an innate source you tap from, a bit like using your soul as mana. Too much magic use weakens your soul, and leaves you susceptible to the plague. Other than that, you are free to fill in what your abilities are in any way you want. You can study and train how to cast magic, or be talented in it, or even just have that 'feeling' for it. The magic tends to shape itself to the character after that.

You can combine the paths just well, they're more or less guidelines.
You will meet in Hallowhold, where the Lord of this city will ask you to figure out what is happening. After that I will loosely guide you through the story, but only if your characters act in ways that would allow them to figure it out. So you're free, but you have a story to find if you so prefer.

hlo!! i'm interested! i think i might go for some kind of science-path character--someone who is kind of an outsider to the whole idea of magic or whatever, and who probably can't use it, but wants to help stop the plague anyway
