Futuristic The Mobile Infantry

Option 3 wins with 4 vote(s)

Crouching as much as you could, you were still easily taller then any living human being, but far less visible then the enemy who were still hiding behind a few buildings.

You moved slowly and silently as possible despite the tinking and clanking that your armor made as it shifted or made contact with the ground.

At least they weren't mini-earthquakes that you created from your initial charge !

You scanned the area as you circled around, silently  like a predator waiting to ambush its prey, and then moved silently into some trees to your right.

You grunted as you tried to wedge yourself between the forestry without creating too much of a ruckus .

Twigs and branches snapped and bushes were flattened , but you didn't disturb  the tree line too much as you advanced through the vegetation.

Using this forest as cover , you circled to the back of the enemy group who were still engaged with your squad mates .

From this point, you could see one red trooper who seemed to be making short work of the rest of your team. The trooper's movements were similar to yours, if not even more graceful.

You saw the trooper dispatch 3 squad mates easily without stumbling over the hulks of the fallen, using his fists and paint cannon deftly.

However,  his back was to the flag while he fought off your teammates. What did you do ?

  1. You leapt out and challenged the enemy marine to a fight !
  2. You took aim and blasted the enemy !
  3. You snuck in and took the flag !

Option 2. Rico's comrades are more important than the objectives! We are not as good with our fists as this man, so we must abuse what advantages we have!

You decided that it would be best to take him out from a distance, after all the red enemy took out 3 of your teammates gracefully within melee range.

You held your right arm high as you brushed away the remaining tree branches and the shrubbery that was blocking the line of sight .

You then aimed your paint cannon at him and as the targeting reticule lined up, you noticed that he was about to engage another teammate.

He was so focused on your teammate that back was still aimed at you and he never noticed you there.

You depressed the trigger on the cannon, and with a jolt a truckload of paint shot out and then you saw as your shot traced right into the back of the enemy marine !

It hit him square in the back and he dropped like a sack of beans as you heard him cursing over his amplified speakers .

He was cursing about how honor-less you were to have attacked him from the back while he was engaging another teammate.

Well, all is fair in love and war right ?

After all he was going to wipe out your squad if you hadn't done anything .

Plus who challenges someone in one versus one combat in the midst of a war zone ?

This isn't a Gundam anime , no its the MI , the Mobile Infantry, the people whom the Empire calls upon when the war gets ugly and the fighting becomes inhumane .

Unlike some idealistic anime , action flick. comic or manga  , a war is a war , the winner goes home and the loser stays, as permanent tenant of the battlefield.

With the enemy leader down , you along with what remained of your team finished off the reaming enemy marines who were guarding the flag.

This quickly became a route for the enemy as it was easy to pick them off one by one since they were leaderless and disorganized .

It felt great to win that day and see that superior tactics can take out a superior enemy !

Strategy as well as combat training weren't the only things that the Core had bestowed its knowledge upon the recruits.

The training base's chaplain was a tall man , with silver hair and a huge scar on the right side of his face running from his eye to his jaw.

Rumor has it that he had fought with distinction and served in the worst civil war that the empire had ever seen, the succession wars which crowned  the new Emperor, Emperor Maximus Sidonius.

When he spoke, everyone's back would stiffen to attention .

He taught the lessons on what he called " The ideals of the Empire "  .

They were things such as:

  • Always help the innocent.
  • Never kill an unarmed foe.
  • Fight for your fellow soldiers.

After he finished, you mentally winced at the second maxim.

Oops... you shot an enemy marine in the back as he was engaging another of your squad mates.

But, he was armed right ?

After all he had  a paint cannon and was going to shoot one of your fellow squad mates.

So wouldn't that mean that the third maxim overrode the second maxim ?

You shook your head mentally at this conundrum , and filed the event into the back of your mind, determined that this would not become a mental block .

There were other lessons , each meant to encourage you and your fellow recruits to " walk the path of light " as chaplain plainly put it.

" ..... if you embrace these ideals, mind body and soul, your self sacrifice, honor , and gallantry will be recognized and you will be honored by the Empire as one of the holy brotherhood .

Those known as Paladins ! " , as the chaplain announced loudly.

One rainy day, the chaplain set you up in pairs to talk about what you thought about some of these ideals .

You found yourself paired up with a tall recruit with brown hair and a perfect smile.

He held out his hand and said " My name is John " .....

What did you do  ?

  1. Shook his hand firmly
  2. Stood and stared at him, flat eyed.
  3. Batted his hand aside, and mumbled to yourself " Great, Mr perfect  lets get this over with"  .

Option 1. A marine doesn't whine like a little baby if they're partnered with somebody they don't like, and they do have some social skills.

Option 1. Courtesy is a small thing to give to a man who stands at your side in battle. Pettiness is child's folly.

Also, just as an aside, anyone wearing Power Amour would be considered 'armed' unless the ability to casually twist the head off a man is a common thing for humans in the future... Just say'n.

You decided that it was best to introduce yourself respectfully. After all, Mr perfect or not, he is a marine.

All marines take care of their own, as per one of the Core's tenants.

You took his outstretched hand and shook, firmly .

" That's a firm strong grip you've got there  ! " John remarked , as he beamed .

You shrugged your shoulders at this , and then moved towards a table.

You lead the way and took a seat by the far corner of the room , to which John pulled up a chair and sat in it facing you, across the table.

"Yeah, Sergent Major Benning is big on the Paladin stuff isn't he ? "   John replied doubtfully.

" Yeah he is ."  you reply curtly.

" I wonder why he's so preachy about being a Paladin ..... Don't tell me he's one of those fantasy nerds?"  John remarked , his voice full of skepticism.

" No, he isn't, you haven't heard the rumors  ? " , as you replied back  .

At this John shook his head .

" Well, he was in the succession wars and fought on Maximus Sidonius's side who eventually won and took the throne as the rightful heir to the solar empire. ", you continued on with the rumor.

" I heard that he got that huge scar of his on his face after saving his unit's commander in the battle for Mars . "

As he dragged the unit's commander to safety , he took an incendiary mortar round to his face plate and the the round burned through and into his face.

"I don't know how survived the extreme damage, but he managed to and somehow kept his sanity as well .  "

" The 3 maxims ...." John replied as he continued ..."  What's your take on all of this ?  "

  1. " I believe in it, if its able to keep Sergent Major Benning sane, it must be true. "
  2. " I really , don't know, Maxims ? Aren't Marines supposed to believe in their fists and weapons ?
  3. " Its preachy trash , in war there's only the cold hard truth, losers die you need to do whatever you can to win at all costs . Such Maxims are a luxury we Marines can Ill afford."

Option 1 - Though I can think of numerous exceptions and conflicting priorities of specific situations, as a general rule, they seem OK. I suppose it is the mark of a True Solider in how he can reconcile these short maxims with the harsh demands of reality.

" I believe in the three maxims, if these maxims keep sergeant major Benning sane, then it must be true ! " , as you speak the words sharply , with conviction .

" Really ? " he says, as he his voice shows a hint of disbelief  . He then rocks back on his chair and hums a bit as he considers your reply.

" All of it  ? Doesn't it seem just a little.....well , .... restrictive ? I mean I joined up to be a soldier, not to ... you know .." John's voice trails off.

" You know what ? "  as you reply confidently.

"You know ,  be unrestrained, I want to become someone who is able to......... win all the time.

This Sergeant Benning, I mean Sergeant Major Benning is a good marine and all, but I'm sure he's never had to keep his word ALL the time........

I mean he's fought in that war, how can anyone come through that war holding such ideals ? "  as John questions it all loudly .

You flash an annoyed look. Apparently your words aren't getting through to your partner.

So you were partnered up with someone as obstinate as he ?

You quickly proceed to enlighten him on why his thinking IS wrong.

" John, your a new marine , do you trust your leaders to lead you into  battle ? "

John nods at this.

" Lying would break that trust, and without trust .." you continue as if you were lecturing a child.

" How would the MI be successful and win after fighting in the succession wars for the Emperor ?  "

" If you always have to look at your back because you don't trust your leaders or your squad mates , you won't be able to look forwards to fight the enemy . "

" I am positive that with the 3 maxims, we were able to build up enough good will, which in turn makes it easier for people to trust each other. " You raise your finger as you continued to speak.

Thus with trust across all levels for  the military and the populace , the MI was able to win the succession wars , unlike the other factions . "

John blinks his eyes as if he were looking through you , as if your words did not have much of an impact upon him.

Then his expression changes immediately and he seems more conflicted than ever.

" I.....I.....I don't know , " he says.unsure about what he is going to comment on .

" Oh well, lets talk about something else......" John remarks quickly before you could cut in with additional advice.

What do you want to talk to John about ?

  1. Nothing, you leave. There's a difference in ideals and its best to not create any conflict within the Core.
  2. Firearms training. Well, If he's Mr perfect, maybe he's also good with weapons as well.
  3. What he did before he joined.

Option 2. Better make sure he can, at least, shoot straight.... Win all the time?... What does he think this is? School sports day?

Even though your partner is annoying, maybe you can learn something new about firearms or actually improve your shooting skill.

After all you did try to help him by guiding him to the path that the Core believed in .

" Yeah, firearms training, what do you think the rigorous regimen set out by Sergeant  Conley is like ? "

" Did you learn anything new compared to basic  ? " , you inquire to which you see John's face light up at the change in topics.

" Yeah,  Sergeant Conley, it wasn't anything special however I did learn how to shoot a different way that  I'm more comfortable with !"  , John chirps back .

You then nod silently and John quickly gives his reply .

" You know in those movies, the hero and all how they shoot ? Just like Mark from Mobile suit Gundam G-Saviour ! "

You nod , but inwardly you start to groan and think  " Don't tell me he thinks he's " but before you can finish off the rest of your thought he continues.

" Well, I tried shooting like him and I look way more COOLER then I do  in that boring modified Weaver stance  or Fighting Stance." John continues , unabated.

" In those movies, the hero ALWAYS wins, so if i shoot like them like this ..... "  * John gestures with his right hand tilted at an odd angle as if he were firing one handed from the hip.

At the gesture , the conversation seems to be too much, you shake your head disapprovingly and wonder if he would make it through the next phase of his training.

Your almost positive that Sergeant Conley will tear him a new one at the very least.

" Wait, Rico  you don't like being a hero ? Fine then , you can be one of those loser Zakus . I want to be a Gundam  hero ! "

John gets up and then leaves the room abruptly  before you can reply .

You wonder if your looking at a dead man walking just before he leaves the room.

After a year of intensive training , your group of recruits was about a hundredth of the size of what it was originally compared to Basic training.

Most of the weak had been filtered out.

This was when the Core started augmenting you , although in this was another incredible trial of mental will and physical endurance.

The first round of surgeries was general , all marines got the same things.

Your hearing got sharper, vision got a little better, and you could choose to have an adrenaline boost anytime you wanted .

The second round of surgeries was more invasive. your bones were strengthened through intentional calcium injections , combined with growth hormones and reductive fracturing.
No matter how many pain killers they used, the experience was hellish.

Jack, a very good recruit from a military family actually went crazy from the experience.

He washed out , never to be seen again .

Your skin was brutally forced to toughen, and your pain threshold from this hellish experience was heightened to the maximum that your genetics allowed .

During this incredible ordeal, the Core took this a step further to subject you to psychological horrors  testing and pushing your mental limits.

You thought at times you were going to break, the mental scars and pains kept on building on top of each other as well as the physical torture.

The physical torture, the Core stopped giving those pain killers, even though by now you were addicted to them even.

You even tasted death a few times due to the extreme pain in conjunction with the opium withdrawals ,  but you were immediately brought back to life every time.

The third and final round of augmentation though, was up to you and the core gave each Marine a specialized package , what did you choose ?

  1.  An advanced cybernetic targeting eye
  2. Your spine and arms reinforced for strength
  3. Your legs reconstructed and augmented for greater stealth .
  4. A bionic eye that scans and provides technical readouts.
  5. Extra adrenaline boosters in your lungs.
