Futuristic The Mobile Infantry

Omnimon

Junior Member

A flicker in the void  . The blue flash of plasma engines . Traveling at speeds faster than light, the starship  " Cassanra " slices through space, shooting like a silvered arrow towards its target - a world called  Fuclion .

You sit, alone in the forward viewing room of the ship, gazing at the stars sliding by like liquid light.

The Cassanra is a light class Imperial vessel built for speed ans stealth . Small as space ships go , the Cassanra carries only her crew, a small tactical squad of 24 Imperial Marines and yourself , an elite marine . Not many people, but when one of them is an elite marine, well , you don't really NEED that many people!

It is the 42nd year of the reign of Emperor Maximus Sidonius Iovinianus over the Empire . The Empire dominates several solar systems, and protects mankind from threats from both inside and out. Battles in the void and around planets call for the Imperial Fleet, but when it's time to land and get your feet wet, the Imperium calls in the Space Infantry -- the elite marine core. You've trained harder, been cybernetically and chemically augmented, and to top it all off you wear a suit of Powered Armor into combat.

The planet your ship is speeding towards,  Fuclion , is a human world on the extreme outer edge of the Sirius star system . The planet supports a single colony of a few thousand settlers. Your briefing told you that something's up -- com chatter was cut off two weeks ago , and no one knows WHY .

You are in command of this mission, and you'll soon need to head down to the launch deck and check on the troops. This is YOUR FIRST MISSION, but you aren't worried.

You can hear your Sergent  barking out orders , so you sit down and wait for him to finish before you head that way . Staring into space, you think back to the beginning of your training.......

First off solider , what's your call sign ?  What do your squad mates call you ?

The new recruit training was tough.

They worked hard at breaking you down.

You remember parts and bits of your training.

The running, the trainers always insisted on marathon like runs. The runs took place at any time , the weather didn't matter at all. It could be raining, snowing or in the midst of a heatwave . Those weeks of hellish training seemed to be a blur to you. The only thing that stands out to you is a recruit named Blake.

Blake couldn't keep up with the running. He was slowing down barely keeping up as he gasped for air. The sergeant was clear that anyone who couldn't keep up would be dropped from the core. They called it " Washing out".You remember Blake straining , gasping for breath, falling behind. What did you do ?

1. You fell back beside and tried to encourage him.

2. You kept running. He needed to do it on his own. That was the point if the training, to weed out the weak.

3. Insulted by this display of weakness you screamed at him, trying to shame him for such a display. Maybe it'll encourage him to push himself harder.

Unfortunately, Blake still had trouble though no matter how you tried to encourage him along. His panting was rough and wretched, and he hardly seemed to know that you were talking to him. What are you going to do now ?

  1. I slowed down and gave him my arm to lean on.
  2. I kept at it, trying to urge him on.
  3. I left him there panting and red faced, trudging along.

OOC: After 20-24 hrs the votes will be tallied up. If there is a tie then the first reply to this is chosen.

While that felt nice to help poor Blake, it didn't work out very well.Unfortunately, he gripped your arm weakly as he started to slow you down . After a few minutes of trying to aid him, Blake collapsed, unable to go on further. You then resolved to carry him over to the finish line as you barely made the marathon run time, under the watchful eyes of your disgusted platoon sergeant. You were dead tired and out of breath by then and sounded more like Blake then yourself.Because Blake had run assisted by you, he had washed out. You saw him take the walk of shame as he left the core that day, you never saw him again .

You can remember the sergeant explaining to you hard voiced and disgust in his eyes as he  berated   you for your actions. "Private Rico, you know that this run is done everyday to see if people have what it takes to be a Marine ! Kindness is great and all, but a great leader needs to be able to make hard choices ! And you will never become a good leader unless you get that through your thick skull of yours !"

Besides the incident with Blake you also remembered another event. Bootcamp is difficult even more so training as a marine . Often at times you barely made the times for mandatory marathon type daily runs or the grueling tests that had left you questioning your intellect .

This time however, another event occurred and had left a fairly negative impression upon yourself. This event haunts you to this day as a mental block that holds you back . The day you started training with rifles, you discovered a few new things that you were bad at. You remember the shooting range sergeant handing out rifles, but yours didn't really shoot straight! You then did something that totally failed - what did you do ??

-----------------------------------------------

  1. You took the rifle apart, thinking that it would be easy to fix. Then with utter horror you realized how much you didn't know about the technical .... stuff !
  2. You grew frustrated about this and complained to the trainer and got an earful.
  3. You just tried to stick with it trying to fake it until you got your marksmanship back.
  4. You just put your rifle down and tried to hide and skip out on that training , however your not so good at that thing ...

Training with that rifle set some bad habits that took you a LONG time to break!

Despite trying to use MANY  different grips , dozens of different stances both orthodox and unorthodox , in a messy attempt to put lead directly on target, you were actually a WORSE shot after that training.

Apparently practice does not make perfect if you don't have the right form.....

Near the end of basic training, the instructors and sergeants had a final test for you.

You and the other recruits were to be dropped off in what you think were the mountains in the southern hemisphere, in what country ? Nobody knew.

Then you were told that when you found your way back to the nearest marine base, that you would graduate.

They said that this was part of the Core's tradition , that by doing this you would be proving yourself worthy of joining a brotherhood of soldiers that others had done so ,since time immemorial .

One of the Sergeants piped up during the end of 3 hour flight and said " The finish line ladies ,  after all that work , this will be a piece of cake ."

His voice was dripping with sarcasm as he grinned manically.

Before you could process those words , the inert light bulb in front of you suddenly turned green and you were then motioned by sergeant to " Jump " .

You looked out , but hesitated for a second , it was so high that it nearly gave you vertigo !

It looked like you were jumping from.....but before you could look at your altimeter you were given a rough boot to the backside and pushed out unceremoniously .

As you were pushed out of an airplane one by one, in the back of your mind, you doubted that this would be easy to do at all.

You quickly checked your altimeter and saw that you had jumped from 25,000 feet, which  quickly became 3,000 feet in a few minutes . You then quickly pulled your ripcord.

With a jolt , your parachute opened up as you saw the ground beneath you rushing towards you at a more leisurely pace.

As you pulled your harness to  glide towards the rocky , snow encrusted ground, what did you do ?

  1. You paid close attention to the direction that the airplane was flying from, and flying to .
  2. You watched where the closest fellow recruits were landing.
  3. You tried to make sure that you landed on clear , high ground.

You twisted in midair rolling your body westward and craned your neck as you kept an eye on the plane as it flew off into the distance.

You saw that after dropping off the other recruits , that the plane was headed WEST.

Landing awkwardly on the rocky surface,  but not enough to sprain or break any bones, you gathered your bearings and took note of the area.

You then pulled out your large machete out from your scabbard which was fastened to your waist.

The large machete , the altimeter and the clothes on your back are the only equipment they gave you for this mission .

As you cut your parachute free, you saw something that was flashing a white light within the composite nylon threads .

A stroke of luck had just occurred, the parachute's GPS system was not deactivated !

You noticed that the mini-GPS computer that was embedded in the parachute wasn't turned off for this mission,

despite the fact that the mission was about surviving alone in the wilderness with nothing but your wits, and machete.

A computer , a mini-GPS computer , might come in handy if you so wished to cheat on this test.

What do you do now ? Do you cheat on this test or not ?

  1. No way. The training was important , and you knew you needed it.
  2. Yes you did !  You secretly cut the mini GPS computer from the parachute and stashed it into one of your pockets. Sure its against the rules, but in war, there are no rules, right ?

Option 1. After all the training it's not like we really need it and washing out at this point on a technicality would be too painful to consider.

Option 1 won with 3 vote(s) in total.

Cheat ? Why would you cheat when you needed more experience operating alone !

The mission parameters explicitly said that this was to be a survival mission to make it back to base with the equipment that you were given officially .

Besides, it is a mini-GPS computer, if you can use it to guide you back to base, they ( the sergeants and instructors) in turn can also *see* that your being guided by a mini-GPS computer as it gave off theta pings that would travel through any kind matter.

After all you have no way of knowing weather or not if this was a one or two way device. If its a one way device, then the sergeants wouldn't know that you were cheating, if it was a two way device however...

Lady luck or not that could have been bait just planted for you.

After cutting all the strings off from your parachute , you then buried the parachute with its mini-GPS computer .

You then walked around and noticed that you were on the side of  a mountain, as you took several minutes to adjust to the surroundings and then surveyed the land.

Standing there on the mountain side, you looked around at the bleak wilderness. What direction did you walk?

  1. You headed north, into the mountains.
  2. You walked south, down the mountainside.
  3. You jogged east, into the rocky hillside.
  4. You went west, into the trees.

We go East, into the hillside, presumably in the direction the plane came from. After all, they might end up turning in an other direction to go to a different base.

Option 3 won with 2 votes .

So you decided to go east, walking in that direction,as the ground got rockier and sharper.

At  first it was just a few scattered pieces of loose rock upon the flat ground.
Then as you continued walking in that direction, the ground started to incline slowly and the bits and pieces of granite rock started to become even more pronounced and larger .

You kept at this direction despite the fact that it became increasingly difficult to travel.

You walked for a  few hours until you were climbing and sliding over sharp boulders of granite , cutting your hands and knees while ripping a hole in the back of your clothes .

As the bumps and pains started to build up, this started to drain your concentration.

Your mind drifted off as you walked east.

You started to think to yourself that maybe, this wasn't the right direction, or was it ?

Blah, why were they training in this fashion , couldn't we just use technology ?

After all we're living in the 30th century and technology has aided man for centuries.

Or is this the reason why members of the core were just superior to the regular Mobile Infantry .

Perhaps it was a test of wills, guts and endurance ?

To train hard and to be " independent" of technology one would have to refine their very basic instincts for war, to hone them in more so then anyone else.

As the sergeant put it  " The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in combat."  .

So after stopping for a bit while questioning your decision to head east, do you keep on going ?

  1. Yes, you kept on going east ! One cannot be indecisive in matters of war.
  2. No, you turned back . Perhaps you should reevaluate the situation and take a different path.
