Armand dislikes running away, being shouted at, pessimism, defeatism, and the tiny lingering thought that tells him he might not make it back home.

Bio/Background:


Armand was born on the 24th of May, 1897, in Marseilles, and he lived a fairly quiet and sheltered life. He was always very excitable throughout the whole of his life, always wanting to make his parents and his friends proud, almost to the point of being a little bit annoying. For this very reason, his parents were very worried for him when beginning of the First World War broke out. He was very excited to do his country a service from the moment it broke out, being completely oblivious to the horrible deaths and horrifying events happening during the course of the war. All that he knew was that this was an opportunity to finally prove himself, which was why most people who knew him thought he would get himself killed when he would eventually be conscripted.


Eventually, his father was conscripted to go off to war, leaving an underage Armand and his mother back at home. While his mother worried non-stop about the safety of his father, Armand was very proud of his father and prayed for his safety every night, and looked up to him as a hero. However, one day, his mother unexpectedly got a letter from a delivery girl on a bicycle, and the mood in his house turned solemn. When the delivery girl had left, his mother closed the door, sat down in a chair, and began to sob uncontrollably. Armand went over to ask her what was wrong, and she hugged him tightly and continued to cry. Armand hugged her back, and they were both like that for a very long time. Armand never understood fully what the letter meant, but his mother became much quieter than she usually was, and there were nights where Armand could hear his mother crying quietly in her room.


A little while later, a few weeks after Armand's 18th birthday, another letter came through. His mother, with shaky hands, handed the letter over to Armand, and Armand's eyes opened with glee. He was being conscripted to fight in the war, like he always wanted! His mother, however, did not share his enthusiasm. She was very tearful and obviously very worried, which, once again, Armand did not understand. He tried to console his mother, trying to tell her that it was alright, that he was going to show the enemies just what he could do. His mother looked at him and said she was worried that she would never see him again like his father. Armand confidently said that he wasn't going to let the Germans get him, and that they'd all enjoy a nice meal together when he got back. After a tearful farewell, Armand was conscripted into the French military, and given his uniform, which he wears with incredible pride. He was called into Verdun not long after, where he, along with a few others, was tasked with ambushing a German artillery encampment.


Personality/Physical traits:


Armand is very excitable and often has an optimistic attitude, and is very patriotic. However, he is quite oblivious to the horrors of the war, sometimes getting himself into dangerous situations out of overconfidence. He tries to help out his squad-mates however he can, and he even spends some of his spare time trying to talk to shell-shocked soldiers. Due to being young, he is quite agile and fast, but he is not very strong, being just strong enough to operate his weapons effectively. His eyes are also sharp, able to spot an enemy from quite some distance away.
