Zombies are slow, with subhuman senses.
A forest surrounds the town, which is high elevation. There is a river north of town, with a highway running through town and towards the city parallel to it.

That would be viable. While they're walking back, Stephanie and Valerie could hear a scream, they'll most likely go investigate and then see that there are five, maybe six zombies trying to enter the house...and hope that there aren't any inside?
