The man (who was one of the magicians fans) asked him if it was true that he could take any mans bunch, then proceeded to punch Houdini (multiple times) before he could prepare himself— this caused his appendix to explode. As he was currently (but unknowingly) suffering from sever appendicitis and refuse to seek treatment even though he wasn't feeling right, it was later realized doctors couldn't have saved him anyways.*
