[The Lawgivers] PRELUDE: The City of Glass

Rowan Lujan

Bothered yet buoyed by Ahlat's voice, Rowan stood straight and looked back at the God. Who was Lytek... ah yes. The incarnate Solar memories giving him context. "A good pair of questions, great Ahlat. I am unfortunately, ignorant of the answers. Is our presence of concern to you?"

MIST

Mist looked at the woman change into the god of War Ahlat. He heard the stories of how this god kept most of the soldiers at bay that anybody could throw him. This god had achieved many things that other gods wished they could do anymore. So he waited to see what Rowan planned to do. Even from what he could see, the god was ready for a fight.

Ahlat's Response

Ahlat stood quiet for a moment, his war like expressions seemed to become docile "Interesting, from my limited knowledge Lytek sends out the souls of the Solar's, only for them to latch on to those of heroic deeds... but I have not heard of any nor felt it in my lands. True it may be a Twilight may Exalt by fixing some long perplexing math equation... but a Dawn?" The expressionless face of Ahlat was unnerving, but the group could feel him being confused by the situation "Truly the Dawn would have been amongst battle and strife. None of this happened. To make things more confusing you all exalted at the same time.... something is a foot" Ahlat shakes his head as if to shoo the ideas away. "No matter, my concern for you five here is simple. I am the God of War, no doubt you already know. Though I have grave concern for your presence here as it seems you golden children, and don't forget you are but children with power right now, tend to want to bring peace to my lands. I can't have this. This... wedding is nothing but an a front to what I hold dear. Tell me, how do you plan to get the prince back? How do you plan to make him not bring the people together when he eventually becomes Tri-Khan? How will you promise me my domain won't be sullied? Why Lytek brought you all here is a mystery, one that is a thorn in my side politically in Yu-Shan."

Ajani

Ajani took a quick look at the escaping ratman before quickly chasing after him, the sound of his running feet echoing through the tunnels. The young Exalt quickly caught up with rat, before grabbing it and shoving it against the wall. His daiklave was held in his left hand while his other held the rat still.

"What were you doing?" Ajani asked the ratman, "Start talking or else I will MAKE you talk." His voice was evenly toned, but his expression was murderous, his onyx eyes appearing as if they were the Void themselves.

Spending 1 wp to channel conviction to get an answer out of him. Rolling 10 dice. 3 sux. Also, did I get any stunts from my actions?

Takeno

The bath helped him relax a bit, though it didn't seem to do much to alleviate this continuing feeling of estrangement from his surroundings. As if he didn't belong there. The dark, menacing voice in the back of his mind seemed to have subsided - for now at least - and he could think somewhat more clearly, yet still felt as if he was trying to make his way through a foggy and strange place, uncertain of who he was, who he should be and what his elevated purpose in Creation should be. His thoughts were answered simply by the cold of the night, the silence of the desert and some faint whispers of dark things, barely audible murmurs of beings old and powerful that somehow seemed to display some interest in what Takeno had become...

Sleeping didn't help much either. Another dream came to him, confusing him even more, but giving him also a vague hint of where it might be useful to look next for clues, concerning his past and his status. He knew not who the golde-thread weaving man with the peculiar hair was, but he knew the symbol that followed. The Eye of Paragon, one of the nearby, quite important cities in all the South. But that would have to wait. A way to resolve the current situation and bring back the son of Tri-Khan had to be found first. And then there was the matter of the deathknight who would come for him, to get him and initiate his training. Maybe he or she would be waiting for him when they'd get back to Chiaroscuro, if all went well with the Prince and they could bring good news back to the Tri-Khan, who had sent them away to safeguard them from the approaching Wyld Hunt, as long as they'd find his only son.

He awoke, unable to sleep much or get any comfort even from this relaxation. Closing his eyes, he tried to concentrate, focus inwards and in an attempt to explore his newfound nature, understand what might be wrong with him and devise some way to lessen or diminish its effects. After some time, he felt the essence inside him flow, a feeling he had never experienced before, and obeying his will - on a subconscious level - form a protective field around him, manifesting as an almost palpable aura of darkness and silence. He felt the cold and stillness of the grave surrounding him and that chilled his very sould, but in the same time he realized that the feeling of discomfort had left him and he somehow felt normal, strong and capable once again.

Takeno stood up and hearing loud voices coming from afar, he went to see what was going on. It seemed that a light was emanating from somewhere in the desert, quite far away from the camp. Making his way there, the young former diplomat of the Realm witnessed the might of Ahlat's presence and heard his worries over the latest turn of events that brought that many exalts in the same time to his domain. He listened carefully, pushing away his mild annoyance of Ahlat's loud voice, reasoning that a God of War would be accustomed to loud shouts and warcries and probably that got reflected in his overall demeanour and speech. Then, the young Exalt, stepped forth, the necrotic aura surrounding him evident to all bystanders and regarded the Southern war God with a questioning look. Takeno held his tongue though, awaiting for all others to finish speaking, if they wished to do so, before attempting to ask Ahlat a couple of things or comment on his statements.

MIST

Mist looked at the God of War shouting at them, apparently concerned that the Prince was going to bring peace to the land. As a god, Mist understood that they were limited in their ways of thinking and what they could accomplish if there was no conflicts or wars happening, a god of war would quickly fade into obscurity. This was at this moment, he realized what kind of reason, the gods made the exalted in the first place. Humans with powers of god like beings but without the restrictions of the gods, the free will of the mortals. He thought about asking him about considering peace but knew that the god wouldn't even have it as an option.

"As far as I know, God Ahlat, peace is but a long dream for mortals. There will always be conflicts between the tribes. Many tribes still oppose the Thri-Khan and have been very openly defiant about it. A wedding while it could reinforce relationship doesn't erase history of skirmishes between people and their rulers. You should know it better than anyone else, how from a simple argument, a war begins. Plus the knowledge of our presence in the south, will only have the realms double their efforts in sending troops to slay us as the Anathema. Even if Thri-Khan supports us, the Realm will still send troops. Even if we had the powers to influence the attitude of people around us, it would take many years and efforts for us to make everybody just wanting peace. An amount of time that we don't have at the moment if the realm is going to chase after us."

Asad

Having left the tent when news of a large conversation was heard the man of the desert heard the words of his god. Speaking up he calls attention to himself. "Because my lord I will bring the sword to these lands. So yes there will be peace in these lands eventually one that happens after I've claimed them." Walking forward meeting the gaze of the mighty god. "Then I will bring your banner to the west and the east. The calls to the mighty Ahlat will be heard farther as my army grows. One day I will march to the very foot of the Pole of Earth or I will die trying. I will take the throne of the Scarlet Empress so that my love may prove that family power is minor to what you seek for yourself."

A gesture to the sands. "Let the son of the Tri-Khan have peace for a time. Let them rejoice at the coming of a new era of enlightenment. In the end war is eternal. For even after the might of the realm is laid low before me and you we will always have enemies." Pointing to the south. "For I will not be willing to settle for just the paltry left overs in our fallen age. No, you and I if you will grant me your blessing will take back all the land the wyld has stolen from us. Then we will continue to push the boundaries till I perish and my children perish. Will you ride with me mighty god of the South. Will you bless my blade, my bow, my very arm so that I can show the world the glory of the south?"

So yeah gonna be using Performance and Presence Excels to make my speech more epic if you want rolls.

Ajani's Question

The ratman snarled at Ajani, obviously unimpressed at his attempts to intimidate. He says in a scratchy voice "I am allowed under here! Top-siders have deals with us!" in flametongue. The portal is slowly still closing as Ajani still has a grip on him.

Layoro's Fall

Layoro took a gouge out of the first rat, he falls to the ground in great pain relenting not to fight back. The second rat lunges at Layoro after getting behind him, hoping to push him out of this room and into the dark tunnel. The rat misses clumsily and instead of trying again, he routes back into the darkness. Immediately outside the room, Layoro saw a huge golden train! In this cavern of a tunnel system, he could only assume it was from the old rails that used to work in the First Age.

There was some very minor essence-lighting in the train itself, which helped light the way. Layoro watched as the rat ran inside it, the blue glass doors opening with ease and lack of sound, obviously still powered if not barely to open from a persons presence. All that was there was a train, a walk way that Layoro could go down that seemed to travel forever and curve right, the other way was the same. There was writing on the wall in Old Realm that seemed to flicker in gold:

Train Junction:

Stop Gold Spiral Magnificent

Train Leaving for Sparkling Red Ruby Road (This is flashing dimly over and over as if it were in a broken loop)
All of a sudden he heard a cry for help inside where the rat was! It was a woman... it sounded like Ms. Sarhee that tried to help him when he was in the cell!

Ahlat's Composure

Ahlat stares at at the group, listening to what they had to say. His anger subsided, but was always there as he was after all the God of War "You place an interesting argument. I have not had many interactions with the sun-children for many years. The ones I have... well they have been outside my purview direction. I had no influence on them. Your offers to bring my name to the East and West while are kindly regarded, they fall in deaf ears" The God gives a huff "The bitch Goddess of the East won't have that, you will simply anger her unmoving spirit. To the West, I am sure they will have some uproar about that.... no many things are political in this time and I can't have you spreading my name every time its convenient. Though, the gesture is appreciated." The souls of warriors past screamed out in blood lust whilst he was silent for a time. His cape flailing through the wind told a new story every time it was looked at. "I came off a bit too harsh, perhaps this conversation is better met with another God, perhaps one that would explain your strange Exaltation." He then turns to Asad and nods "You bring up a valuable point, you sun-children aren't exactly renowned for your subtly. I take your offer to push back the dangerous wyld, those beasts won't know what hit them. Now, if only that wouldn't take another few years and we can do this tomorrow. The Prince is off to the East, they have ten men of each of the three clans guarding its post in a triangular formation. If you wish I could wipe them out to bring real havoc, or you could..." The god gives a huff of disapproval before continuing "I guess you could be diplomatic about it... if your into that. Whichever way you choose, you'll know when I make my move. If you decide to go to war with this wedding, I will keep in contact with you, your return has created quite the.... stir. I don't just mean Solar's in general, that's old news. I am talking in particularly about you five and this.... " The god looks at Takeno "This one following has everyone confused as Malfeas!" He laughs for a time and then Ahlat gets stone-faced. He takes out his spear of magnificent design and slams it to the ground! The circle around him that at that time turned to glass due to the heat of his arrival shattered, sending rays of golden light and sounds of war and cattle splashing against everyone's ears that were nearby. Within an instant he was gone. The sand was calm and it was as if no one was there.

Ajani tilted his head. It seems that he got some answers out of the ratman. It was actually a bit of information. Someone hired them to kill anyone who got here. They were either used as a hired group or a security guards on this First-Age site. Either way, this did answer some of the questions. Unfortunately Ajani knew that he wouldn't be able to get any more answers out of the ratman. But the Tri-khan probably did.

Quickly grabbing his spectral daiklave, Ajani slammed it against the rat's skull, intent on knocking him out.

Taking a -1 penalty to turn all damage into bashing.

Feeling vindictive and needing to take his frustrations out on the Ratman (plus it was just nice to prove that no petty trap could stop him any longer) Layoro continued after the creature on to the train. The fact that it was a piece of First-Age technology was also a bonus. If nothing else he might find something useful or valuable here.

The Treasure, Found

The ratman didn't seem to fight very much as soon as the portal of wyld material closed shut. Indeed he took the whop to the head with as much grass a wyld-touched creature would. And, as soon as that portal closed, seemingly thanks to the strange mug that was slamming against the ground every few minutes, the generator was whole again. Immediately when this happened lights, sprockets, small wheels and engines started creeping back to life from their long slumber. The humming noise matched the lights on the walk way that used to be very dim, now shined very brightly with a blue hue. Dome lights at the top of these fifty foot tall tunnels also shined down with the cool blue light and filled the entire place. Indeed every corner of this huge cavern of a tunnel could be seen and all the mildew and fana that collected over the thousand years was visible as well. A panel came up with a buzz and hiss a blue transparent screen with strange writing in old realm was present, next to each button Old Realm said something. There was five buttons in all.

Choo Choo

The train when entered was dark, however it was chilled. Layoro could audibly here a squishing noise below him when he noticed he was walking in filth. Various food stuffs that went bad over time gave an awful smell to this car. The essence-powered air conditioning at least alleviated some of this stench. Each side of the care had multi-colored windows with the same unbreakable glass they knew from the first age. The chairs, if they weren't covered in filth were of excellent shape after all these years and were magically toughened as there wasn't a single scratch on the red leather benches. Everything else was a golden hue one way or another, from the poles that people would hold onto that were in transit to the ceiling. The ratman that had ran from Layoro snickered behind two doors intersecting into another rail car. It had its mangy claws in Ms. Sarhee's hair whilst he pulled her along, holding a blade to her neck as a hostage.

*SHOOM* *SHOOM* *SHOOM*

Suddenly the lights, one by one all came on, the light domes outside the car came on as well. Layoro could see that sign that said "in transit" outside turn green and the rail door shut. Slowly, but surely the train started to move and pick up speed.

Message Board

With a noble that was knocked out, a ratman that was knocked out, and a command panel in front of him, Ajani had a few options. On the control panel there were five options:

Sewage Systems 10 % Operable

Train Systems 40% Operable

Maintenance Systems 0% Operable

Vault Systems 0% Operable

Surveillance Systems 10% Operable

Ajani also saw that on this holographic blue screen there was a power dial that seemed to be able to be pulled to each system. There was 100% extra power he could move from auxiliary to any of these systems he chose to make them work, or perhaps work harder.

Perc + Craft 5 Sux to figure that all out

Sandy Surprise

They traveled east, our heroes of the sun walked for miles and miles, hoping Asad's information was sound of this location. They were nearing what seemed to be a clearing just over the next sand dune, when suddenly Rowan notices something... a glint of metal from the ground. He has just enough time to shout it was a trap! Though the hiding bandits had lost their surprise they came over the hills on striding beasts of several humps, brandishing curved blades. There must have been at least 8 mortals there. There was no evident exalts, but they were charging them directly!

From about twenty feet away there were three archers firing arrows, hoping to hit their mark.

Battle Order:

Rowan passed a perception check, you weren't surprised, but they tried to shoot Takeno and failed... as many of my NPC's do :( Takeno is -3 DV for his first turn however.

1 - Takeno, Rowan, Asad, and Mist

2 - 8 Bandits (10 feet away)

3 - ???

4 -

5 -

6 - Sad Three Archers.

Layoro

Having little time or tolerance for hostage situations, Layoro felt it was time to end this escapade. Drawing himself up to his full hight, Layoro leveled his weapon at the ratman. A golden bonfire enveloped his body as sigils denoting the power of fury of the Chosen of the Sun manifested themselves. "Let her go." He said, his voice broke no argument. "Or I will end you." The steel in his hand shimmered slightly, seemingly eager to act upon the threat.

OOC

Charsima 5 + Presence 5 + 1st Excellency 5 nets me 15 dice. Spending 3 more motes on Irresistible Salesman Spirit to bring the total motes spent to 8. All from the Peripheral pool. Peripheral Motes at 31/40. I got 9 successes, and Salesmen Spirit brings that to 18 total

Hostage Situation

Usually the blabbering of the top dwellers would not move the simplest of ratmen, however Layoro's words ring throughout the train as it moved swiftly along. The ratman let's go of Ms. Sarhee, who in turn ran into Layoro's arms "Thank you, I was baited in here by Asalad, those ratmen... they work for him..." she said in fear. There was little time for Layoro to respond when he noticed that the train was moving faster and faster. The acceleration didn't seem to slow down and just ahead there was a huge wall of rock that covered the fifty foot tunnel! It was a cave in and they were heading right for it! The conductors cabin was one car up, behind the ratman who at this point had his hands on his head laying on the ground.

A curse as Asad calls on the might of the sun. Keeping it to the well of his soul he pushes his essence into the idea of perfection in his martial abilities. With that focussed he blurs slightly to draw his bow. The first arrow sings out aimed at the second from the front bandit. Even as he rides the arrow soars through the air.

As he closes the distance the thrums again aimed at the rear bandit. Sailing through the milling ranks of raiders it flys with an almost supernatural precision to throat of the man.

With a cry to the great bull god he blurs again to sling his bow and draw his blade. Reaching them he flourishes the golden blade knocking the lead bandits sword out of alignment before back beating his blade to take the man high on the chest. The blood streaming onto the sand stains the location crimson.

Spending 12 motes for the 4th Melee Excel. That allows me to use 6 motes free for the 1st-3rd Excels. With Dawn Kings strife I can use any of the Dawn Excels for any of the Dawn skills. Taking a three attack flurry so first attack is at a - 3 with my power bow, giving me a 14 die pool, the second attack is at a 13 die pool before stunts of course. As I close I use Elegant dance of bow and blade to switch my bow with my sword and then attack with a 19 die pool.

1st archery has 8 successes

2nd archery only has 5 successes

the melee attack has 13 successes

I am now at tick 7 and a parry DV of 3 before charms.

For defensive charms I'm using 3rd Excel to add 4 to my DV, if that isn't sufficient then add 2 dice from 1st excel, if that isn't enough then Dipping swallow to remove DV penalties. If that isn't good enough then spend a WP if I'm down by one.

Ajani

"Nobody using the train system, so I don't need that" Ajani mused as he diverted all the power from the Train system. He then proceeded to put 100% power into the Maintenence system as well as 40% power into surveilance, intending to check the rest of the system for any other ratmen. He was tempted to open the vaults, but it was more secure powered down. He didn't want anyone getting in or anything dangerous getting out.

Maintenance

Ajani directed most of the power to the maintenance systems and almost right away a voice came on the loud speakers in the tunnel which was speaking in Old Realm, lucky for Ajani he understood it. A robotic woman's voice said over and over "Emergency Maintenance Initiated, All Hands On Deck!"

The surveillance power was evident as hundreds of tiny screens came up and hovered around him, though most of them were visuals of empty tunnels dressed in the same blue hue Ajani saw before, he noted some that were of great interest:

1) He saw Layoro on a golden train going at alarming speed, the camera was in the train itself. Asad had power over the loud speaker, but after removing all power from the train he had no power to stop it!

2) There was a camera that panned back and forth methodically at a large golden wind ship, the very one he saw prior. Small black shapes moved across its deck. At least they seemed small considering how large the ship was.

3) There was a vault door. Though it was not evident or obvious as it was flush with the wall. In fact the only reason he knew the vault door was there was because the screen said so.

On various other cameras he noticed hundreds, maybe even thousands of tiny robots clearing rubble, sweeping up long sat dust, and even mini warrior bots attacking rats! It was apparent that these rats were being treated as infestation and they were the exterminator! A sliding tile moves across the floor in front of all these panels and a golden chair with red plush leather came up. It sat right in the middle of this power facility, all the screens wrapped around it.

Runaway Train!

Layoro, almost feeling he should leap over the rat and stop the train noticed the lights flicker in the car, then go dead. The speed of the train slowed, but then a robotic woman's voice came on the car speaker "Auxiliary Car Power Initiated: Impact Imminent. Slow Acceleration" in Old Realm. Suddenly the lights came on, bathing the cars not in a nice warm white color, but an imposing red. It would seem the train kept going and whatever it was that powered it was shut off externally, perhaps someone knew he was here?

"Oh, well now that's just perfect." He muttered under his breath. "Come with me, if I can't figure out how to stop this thing, then we're going to have to bail." He said to Sarhee, taking her hand and running to the front of the train. There, he looked over the controls as fast as he could, looking for some way to slow the thing down.

OOC

Int 4 + Lore 5 = 9 dice to help with manipulating First Age tech. 6 successes.

Ajani

Ajani swore audibly before scrambling to the controls. He quickly relocated 30% of the from maintenence back into the train system, and quickly hoped that he wouldn't make things worse that they already were. He quickly accessed the loudspeaker,

"Layoro! If you have any perfect defenses, use them now!"

Takeno

With a deep breath, the young Abyssal regained his composured and focused his efforts, in an attempt to prepare himself as best as possible for the approaching bandits. Tapping into the dark power that funneled his exaltation, Takeno let his subconscious guide him and see which martial discipline would come to him more effortlessly, in this hour of need. He had already parted ways with his sword, unwilling to shed the blood of Dragonblooded with it and as a self imposed penitence, he denied himself the honour of swordsmanship, an art which he had studied extensively in his younger years. Now, it seemed more fitting to follow a path of corporeal and mental discipline, altered though by the cruelty and darkness that seemed to surround him since his exaltation. The mastery of martial arts was something his body seemed to recall all too well, and even Takeno couldn't explain how. Perhaps the dire situation he was facing, with no other means to defend himself sparked an instinctive response from his enhanced physical and mental capabilities.

He closed his eyes, even as the bandits closed in, even as their archers sent a rain of feathered death his way. In this state of meditative focus, each and every pain that life had ever inflicted upon him came back to his mind, burning brightly as a branding mark upon his soul. Then suddenly he re-opened his eyes and fury itself danced within them. "It is payback time" a voice said inside his mind. Assuming the stance of the form that someone, more educated in the ways of martial disciplines, would call "Dark Messiah style", the former diplomat of the Realm started to close the distance between him and the advancing bandits.

Takeno saw Asad assault them in a sequence of bow shots and expertly placed sword slashes and focused on a bandit that was still untouched by his companion's attack. After closing in on him, Takeno jumped, grabbing the reins of the camel as he did so, to launch himself further up, and delivered a trio of lightning fast punches to the man's solar plexus, lower ribs and kidneys in that order. Feeling the essence flowing to his hands, guiding him to strike at the most vulnerable spots, his knuckles hardened and emanated an aura of deathly cold as he attempted to hit his opponent repeatedly.

Sand Combat!

With supernatural quickness, Asad dispatches two arrows seemingly at once in a quick flurry as the sand-men rode up in droves. The first arrow knocked the man clear off his horse, forcing him to grasp at his neck as he bled out his final moments of mortal life, his soul to soon be one with Lethe. The second arrow narrowly was dodged by the man in the back, he dipped backwards almost falling off his horse, but not slowing down his charge. With impact imminent Asad drew his daiklave, the sun gleaming off of it blinded the men from its sheer power as it came down and split one of the men clear in half! His torso flying into the sands gave pause to the other men, if they weren't zealots perhaps they would have retreated.

Takeno grabbed the horse by the reins, its large eyes widened at the dark soul that was inside the exalt. The abyssal then continued to leap onto the horse and give a flurry of attacks to the man in a relentless rain of fists. The first attack gave an audible crack, the second several as multiple ribs obviously broke, and the final killing blow definitely gave internal bleeding. Every swing was met with the slight moans and screams of souls past, tempered into the steel. The man fell down like a rag doll into the sand, never to move again.

There was now five men total, however our other two heroes felt that was five too many as they easily dispatched two more of them, leaving three left. Their blood soaking the sands of the South.

The three men decided to attack Takeno, hoping their zealotry will at least take one down.

The first tribesmen gets through Takeno's armor, barely but he shrugs it off no problem, the second one misses completely and finally the third one does damage to him, marking him barely as his sword slides off Takeno's

OOC

Takeno takes no damage due to charm usage to take it up in Soak phase.

Panic Button

In a quick panic, Ajani diverted 30 percent energy from maintenance. Immediately the robotic woman stopped going on about Emergency Maintenance and normal maintenance ensued. The various robots and other machines slowed down and even some went back into their respective huts that which before was just another part of the flush wall of the tunnel.

Meanwhile, on the train Layoro had enough time to see a small spider robot made of gold latch onto the rat creature, pin it down and pull it towards the door of the train. The doors emergency latch was automatically pulled and the tiny spider through it out of the car currently going 120 miles per hour. Layoro could tell it was going this fast due to the fact that it said so on the digital monitor that was climbing quickly. In the main car he could see infestation a plenty and much of it was wrapped around a very large lever that was forcibly pulled back. With Layoro's knowledge of units he could tell that while this wasn't the mechanism to have an emergency stop, he knew it was a mechanism to slow it down progressively. Just as he released the lever and pushed it forward the speed slowly went down as he hoped.

There was no sigh of relief however as impact was now imminent. The power from the car flickered again and went from a red light to its normal soft white light it had prior. Power was now established again and while it wasn't running on auxiliary power, it was powered nonetheless. The trains slow decent to 0 MPH couldn't come soon enough and it crashed into the cave in!

....

But nothing happened. Or did it? Layoro turned around and saw the cave in was still there... but the train... the train went right through it! As if it phased through it with some sort of magic it teleported past the cave in!

90 MPH

There was an audible sigh as Ms. Sarhee said "Oh my Yu-Shan! I can't believe were alive! This is amazing!" That is when she turned and her mouth gaped open in shock as to what was in front of her. She stammered as the piercing light came into vision "The...the..." she couldn't piece the words together.

"The market. Were headed for the market quarters in the nobles district!! THE RED ROAD!!!"
