overview.
Ten years ago the small town of Cobre Flats, California was struck by two terrible tragedies. In a town that is otherwise nondescript, named after the dried out copper mine that lured many a miner to the coast, nobody would have suspected that murder would strike. In October of 1979— Jonny Ruiz was found dead, washed up at the bluffs with a cotton bag over his head. The coroner wrote it as an accidental drowning, finding alcohol in Jonny's system and knowing, as anyone did, that Jonny had come from a rough family, new to town with nobody to rely on. The death was ruled, sorted into a tiny folder of papers, and tucked into a filing cabinet in the bowels of the Cobre Flats Police Station.
But that's not the truth. Not at all close to it.
The Killing Game started out as a silly little hazing ritual, drawn up by generation after generation of Cobre Flats kids as a way to inaugurate anybody new to town. Dedicated to Peter Mudd, the miner who in 1899 went 'crazy' and butchered everyone trapped in the cramped little mine shaft with him, it was said that his restless spirit craved new blood in order to be appeased, lest he return from the dead to exact his menacing rage on the townspeople. Participants would be required to hide out in a sometimes small but often dark room, armed with only a light and a mirror, in order to summon him.
Peter Mudd come and get your fill of blood. Recited three times. In order to fulfill this bloodlust, rather than kill one's self or be killed, close encounters would be enough to do the job. As they said, anyway. It would start out over the course of a week: near death experiences that brought the participant closer and closer to Peter. Each successful encounter would satisfy the spirit, and by the end of the week it would be enough, and Peter would return to the grave with no deaths to claim.
But that's what they said everytime. You'd get a clap on the back at the end, maybe a beer in your hand. Congrats, you're a Cobre Flats kid now. No one had died from it, remarkably, in all of the years that the stupid game was played. Until Jonny.
It had been an accident, so they believed. They didn't know that Jonny couldn't swim. They didn't know that he was a lightweight. Kids with their whole lives ahead of them, the six of them had decided there and then not to breathe a word of it to anyone, not the cops: and maybe Jonny's memory would fade away. Jonny, however, would not be forgotten: and that following summer, right before those six were set to begin the rest of their lives, Jonny's sister sought to avenge her brother. She knew the truth. She knew that they'd all get away with it.
Ruth Ruiz killed six people that night, injuring a handful more. Subdued in time for the cops to arrive, nobody wanted to believe that she could have done it. Nobody wanted to believe that she could have done it alone. But there were families seeking answers, and with the growing pressure of the community on the mayor and the chief of police, they went ahead and said that Ruth hadn't done it alone; that she'd been an accomplice driven mad by her brother's death. One of the victims, Robbie Gates, they blamed. Saying the killer was dead, that there was nothing to worry about anymore, was the only way they saw to restore peace. Justice has been served, they'd said. Ruth was carted off to a mental hospital out of state when she had another mental breakdown.
And finally, after a torturous year for Cobre Flats, the nightmare would be over.
--
The year is 1989, and while a single decade isn't long enough for anyone to forget what had happened, Jonny's been turned into an urban legend himself. Made more real by the fact that it had happened so recently, The Killing Game became about Jonny. They say Jonny wants his revenge, and that you've got to do it in order to keep his spirit at bay. The hazing got a little less intense, in order to avoid the police's scrutiny, but that only made it more thrilling. Cobre Flat's graduating class tosses their caps in the air, looking forward to a future of intellectual providence, or a numbing experience at the gas station.
A week prior, Cobre Flats senior Robin Chambers was found dead in a car accident on Old Oak Road. He'd lost his head. They said it was an unfortunate accident, but Robin had always been a careless driver. A real tragedy they'd said, that he'd been so hung up on the death of his older brother ten years ago: Justin Chambers, the so-called ringleader of Jonny's hazing death. But nobody could have known that, not unless they'd been there— or they'd found out.
Nobody looked too deeply into Robin's death. But if you knew, you knew that the old Killing Game had required you to drive high speed down Old Oak Road, by the Bluffs. By where Jonny had died. Loose connections, really... but if you knew...
With the yearly summer grad party coming up again, it's the summer of 1979 all over again. And the Killing Game is no longer just a game anymore.

GRAD CLASS OF 1989
open
Congrats seniors! This is your crowning achievement of the last 12 years of your miserable lives! Whether you're excited for the future or looking forward to retail hell, this is your moment! Unfortunately, the recent murder of your classmate has put a bit of a damper on that. Do you believe that Robin's death is something notable to the Killing Game, or do you believe that it's just a pure accident. The rumours haven't been particularly kind about Robin's passing, and have shed some suspicious light on the conditions of his death. After what your sibling/friend/family member went through, it's a wonder that you haven't already felt the chopping block rubbing against your neck.
THE SURVIVORS
open
Life after surviving a tragedy can't have been good for you. Whether you were a potential victim of the slaughter, related to a victim, or found yourself excused by fate from the incident, knowing that it could have been you on the coroner's slab probably keeps you up at night. Putting Cobre Flats behind you after 1979, if you have, was probably your best choice. However, by some reason or another... you've come back. Maybe it's coincidence, or maybe you got a phone call leaving you in a cold sweat, taunting you to return. Either way, hey! You're here! And you're probably gonna get killed! Or survive. Have you been practising your left hook?
THE CIVILIANS
open
Unrelated to any of the bullshit that's happened, and has happened, you're just someone unremarkable. But hey, maybe tonight's your night to shine! Feeling like a victim? A hero? Test your luck! ANYONE WITH THIS ROLE CANNOT BE RELATED TO OR INVOLVED IN THE MASSACRE.
THE AUTHORITY
open
Every slasher needs its unwitting cops. Maybe it's your first year in Cobre Flats, or maybe you're a veteran of the Killing Game— either way, you're here now and about to be confronted with another wave of murders. Do your best to figure out the killer, to stop the killings, and maybe save your own life while you're at it.
rules
rules.
rule one.
as it is a slasher rp, people will die— and it could be your OC. it's highly recommended to double up. do not create a character that is impervious to being killed, or would otherwise be a little insensitive to kill, such as being pregnant. all characters that are of the current graduating class will be 17-19 years old. all characters of the surviving class will be 27-29. all OCs should have some connection to the original victims, any survivors, or the legend itself (by family, friends or other association. the freedom is all yours!) Excluding the 'citizen' role. REALISTIC FACECLAIMS ONLY. I will also take descriptions! No anime, no art, no AI art.
rule two.
all writers please be over 18! subject matter will include sensitive topics of murder and descriptions and depictions of it. This is a horror rp, please don't come if dying and murder makes you queasy. posts should be somewhat frequent, two paragraphs minimum, with everyone posting at least once a week. if you can do more, great! we will be operating with some freedom between 'chapters', and during these you may post with who you want and do what you want. these chapters will be guided to some degree by events happening, deaths being called or other overall plot related events. ghost-friendly rp! if you run out of interest, get bored or get too busy, just let me know! if you ghost however your character(s) are liable to being killed, though you will have a say in how they are killed (so have fun with that!) relationships between characters aren't required but it is recommended; cobre flats is a small town, and everyone knows everyone to some degree.
rule three.
the identity of the killer will be known to me and whoever is chosen: pitch it to me privately, or if folks want a free for all, I will randomly select someone. If no one wants to be the killer I'll use an NPC. I'm flexible! I just want us to have fun, tell a fun little (slasher) story, and see where it goes! Hell, maybe we'll get a sequel!
rule four.
if you have any preliminary questions please ask. i'll have an ooc up after some interest, and the cs up after further interest there. more information about the town, the murders and involving yourself in the plot will be available when the cs page goes up; but if you wanna ask about it before hand, that's alright. THIS WILL NOT BE FIRST COME FIRST SERVE. If you do not finish your cs by the completion date, I will not accept you! If I think your character isn't quite the vibe, I will not accept you! Please don't take it personally, as sometimes some characters aren't fit for a specific rp vibe. That's just how it goes!
