Eternally Tired
Sunlight drifted through the paper thin curtains covering the windows in Yuji’s cramped office/apartment. His cot was stuffed in the corner next to a discarded cigarette carton and empty bottles of gin. Yuji sat in an office chair he found abandoned outside a dorm and reread the case file in his hands for the seventh time that half hour. Knee jumping beneath the table, he sipped at a styrofoam cup filled with room temperature stale coffee. Half healed cuts and dark bruises ached from nights of hunting. Bagged dark eyes beneath a short crop of black hair betrayed the fact that Yuji hadn’t gotten any sleep in the past few days.
Yuji had allowed someone to die. Somehow something got in his blind spot during his patrol and some poor girl died because of it. Logically, he knew that everyone was struggling beneath the massive increases in breaches into the mundane world. He knew that other hunters from all over were facing similar problems and that was why he was being forced to deal with the hordes alone. But that did not change the fact that he failed and that she died. He failed and she died. He failed and she-
Yuji downed the rest of his coffee and threw the styrofoam cup into the overflowing trash bin. An old analog clock hanging from the wall let him know it was almost time for his appointment. He was set to meet the dead girl’s roommate soon and he wanted to appear somewhat competent.
He had visited the site of the attack soon after it happened. The survivor was already being wheeled to the nearest hospital to make sure she was alright but the rest of the scene remained untouched for Yuji to investigate. At the time he managed to keep himself detached from the horror and study the wounds and marks found in the area. Hyena-like paw prints scattered the small patches of grass settled outside the sidewalks showed the creatures were bipedal. Chunks of flesh missing with massive bite marks mixing with neat entrance wounds from forged weapons could only mean one thing. Gnolls. And now they had bloodlust from their last kill.
Yuji did not want to speak with the girl’s roommate. He felt it would only cement his feelings of dread. But it was protocol to debrief survivors of attacks and he was the only one qualified to speak with her about magical threats. Plus, he wasn’t sure just how many gnolls attacked the two of them or how well armed they were.
It took him a few minutes to dress, pulling on dark jeans and a faded button-up shirt. He grabbed his sheathed swords from the coat stand, a katana and wakizashi pair, and strapped them to his belt on his left hip. Finally he draped his leather jacket, its impossibly dark color revealing the protective enchantment, over his broad shoulders. After snagging his keys Yuji made his way towards campus.
The journey did not take long on his old vintage Honda motorcycle. Parking it directly onto the curb, he tossed his helmet into a saddlebag. Walking up to the apartment building, he considered the door. Gently biting his lip, he weighed his options. He could either stay here and see the devastation and tragedy that he caused, even if indirectly, or he could leave and pretend he forgot the appointment and save them both further heartache. Sighing deeply to try and focus himself, he buzzed the room he memorized from his case file.
“Hello?” He called into the intercom. “This is Yuji Carver. I believe we have a meeting scheduled?”
