Is there a reason for it?Idea here. What if we included bits showing that some monsters get discriminated against? For example, Mal's being a bogeyman means other, traditional monsters tend to look down on him, if they figure it out.
Well, racism historically is born from the majority in power against the minority not in power, for a variety of reasons; competition for resources, scapegoating, and creating an other for the community to rally against. Let's say something similar happens. Is there a reason for it?
Still can't imagine discriminating against them honestly, when there's probably worse monster out there. Being a loner isn't a universally hated trait, although the feeding off fear can make them a bit sus. Maybe when a darklord rose to power and messing with everyone the bogeyman decided to lick his shoe and backstab all the other monsters during crucial times? Now everyone can say, "fuck those backstabbing bogey bastard!". That requires a bit of worldbuilding though.Well, racism historically is born from the majority in power against the minority not in power, for a variety of reasons; competition for resources, scapegoating, and creating an other for the community to rally against. Let's say that bogeymen tend to be loners and outcasts in greater monster society, muscled out by the vampires, werewolves, minotaurs, elves, etc. Let's also say their ability to eat fear makes some wary of them. So, we have a community of creatures that stick to the shadows, feed off of fear, and have never really been able to assert themselves over the stronger monster communities. I'd say that's a good recipe for discrimination to arise against them.
On a meta-level, it's because the bogeyman tends not to be considered on the same narrative level as something like a vampire or a werewolf, just an undefined figure in various cultures.
Yeah, but I still see the bogeymen as being discriminated against by the wider monster community. I don't think them serving a dark lord is needed for this either.Still can't imagine discriminating against them honestly, when there's probably worse monster out there. And their being loners make others view them with suspicion.
Uh. That's a good point.I've thought about this for a few days, so here's my two cents, for what it's worth. There needs to be more behind it than "boogeymen are bad because they're loners". If preferring to be alone was enough, then it would be affecting far more than just boogeymen. In fact, if you look at the characteristics of most of the supernatural races, many of them are solitary. For example, when was the last time you read a story about a pod of selkies drowing a person? it's always a lone selkie. Social monsters, like werewolves, are the minority.
Racism happens when you paint an entire group of people with the same brush, and that brush is normally something negatively effecting society as a whole. They all lie and cheat, they steal, they're all lazy and don't want to work, they're savage and unciviized, and so on.
In your character sheet, you mentioned Mal is from the youngest monster race around. That may not be enough for outright racism, but it could be reasonable to expect he would be overlooked, or thought of as not as advanced as the older, more evolved monster races who have been around since, or before, the human race were tree climbing apes.
Well, like I said, bogeymen being a young race would be a good starting point. They're treated like the children of the monster world, or overlooked when looking for candidates for a task. Or, when they are chosen, the reaction from many is "What? You got the job? But your just a bogeyman!!"Uh. That's a good point.
Still... I do like the meta context of bogeymen being treated differently from the other monster races, both in the lore and outside it.
So... anyone interested in brainstorming?
