Fantasy The Gauntlet Challenge

Haruhi Suzumiya

An Adorable Entity

"Hello, everyone!" The Game Master's voice chimes in. "Welcome to the Gauntlet Challenge of 2014! I'm your host, the Game Master - First things first, I'll explain a few things. This will be a competition to the death, meaning being competitive is vital. Be savage if you must, but keep in mind that you might do well to help your teammate and the other teams rather than hinder them. After all, you can't do this alone. I promise you, you can't. This doesn't mean, however, that you should trust the other teams. Trusting them could mean death, and death means losing. I expect at least one of the teams to die - Yes, at least. At worst, or best if you're sadistic, everyone could die."

"Now, for your, er, attire. Had to cut corners with time, so you were put into your uniforms by machines, seeing as all of you came here asleep! 'Couldn't wait for you to wake up and change, so. Lastly, for what you're going to be doing here - You have to get through seven 'gauntlets', which are sets of challenges posed to each of you. Think Survivor or Wipeout when I say that, but with a little more pizazz. Up ahead are challenges that need you to be at your smartest, at your strongest, at your fastest, at your luckiest, even."

"How will you hold up? 'Can't be sure, but I guarantee that one of you is going to be out of here by Gauntlet Two. And I don't mean escape."

As all four teams walk out onto the beginning platform, a long and thin steel platform suspended above water with the entry door behind it and the first Gauntlet up ahead, the Game Master started his explanation.

"Now, here's our first set of challenges - For each Gauntlet there's three sets of challenges and one extra challenge. The extra challenge will have a treasure chest at the end containing something that will help you - If you take a little detour to do the special challenge, you can win the one special award. Try to go quickly, though, because the last team to assemble at the end of the Gauntlet will receive a punishment! The first team to make their way to the end, whether they beat the extra challenge or not, they will be rewarded. So enough explanation - I'll explain as we go along, all right? Onward!"

"So here's your first set of challenges! They're all laid out before you - You can choose one of the following to go ahead. All right?"

Challenge 1, Set 1 - Pillar Hop

Jump from one pillar to the next to get to the next checkpoint! Don't think this is easy, however, because you'll be getting water balloons shot at you from a cannon! (Requires 6 Strength to endure without being knocked off balance)

Challenge 2, Set 1 - Tightrope

Like the Pillar Hop, but it's easier if you can balance! You won't need to handle water balloons, but you'll need to focus hard and balance really well to get across!

"Well, it's only two challenges. But this is the first set of challenges, so that's to be expected, right? I'm not giving you many choices to adjust you to the difficulty here!"

8 Gauntlets.

8 Players.

4 Boys,

4 Girls.

1 Victor.

Four teams of two were chosen to face off in a gauntlet challenge. The four boys and four girls chosen had no rhyme or reason to them - They were simply chosen for their teams at random, and were forcefully removed from their homes to be taken to the deadly competition. Whether they recall how they were taken or even their life before the competition purely depends on how hard they tried to escape capture...

The four teams - Red, Blue, Green and Yellow - Again, have no rhyme or reason to them. They were randomly selected, but they are fairly balanced - No team is guaranteed a win. One boy and one girl is on each team, and they must work together in order to win, or they will lose and die.

The event is not televised. Nothing of the competitors' lives before the events of the gauntlet challenge is brought to light by the game master, meaning if the players don't remember their lives, they may be destined to die not knowing who they are. Of course, one team will survive and return home... Unless everyone dies trying.

No specific knowledge of the obstacles ahead was told to the teams - Only that they would need to be in peak physical condition for the physical challenges and they would need to be very clever to handle the puzzles. However, some were not prepared (Or some lived unhealthy lives before being chosen), so they may not be capable enough.

Without further ado - Without further explanation - Let's begin the games!

This section will not be used for a map: Instead, it will be used for the character sheet and anything else important to share with you all. I'll add new things as new things become important.

Stats

Strength: 0/10

Intelligence: 0/10

Speed: 0/10

Finesse: 0/10

Gauntlet

An obstacle course with varying difficulty. It is typically nonlethal but themed with something bizarre. Gauntlets are the most frequently appearing room type, but the ones everyone must complete are usually easy enough to be possible. Gauntlets are usually unpredictable. Best suited to Speed characters.

Gamble

A game of pure luck, like a draw from a hat, will occur at random sometimes. It's usually at the end of another challenge and can be used for a Finesse character to redeem themselves if they lost or, if they won, assert their dominance, though as it's pure luck deciding who wins, Finesse characters may not win sometimes.

Exam

A puzzle, usually scaled up to the size of the players or even bigger. Sometimes it's not even a puzzle and is just a difficult problem that could be solved through logical means. These are unpredictable - They can be anything from a simple question to a 1000-piece human size puzzle. Intelligent characters have the easiest time with these.

Stalwart

A test of strength, sometimes mixing elements from Exams, creating things like block puzzles (Requires heavy blocks to be pushed, but also requires a bright mind to know where the blocks go). It could be anything, however, from pulling a car to a carnival game with a hammer.

For your character's stats, you may use 24 points - The average for most stats is 5, but you may remove points from a stat until it is at 1 if you wish to put points into another stat. It is not advisable to have stats at 1, however, because if you are alone and you need to get past a challenge requiring a stat to be high, you may be stuck until another team comes by - If they ever do come by...

Strength is your raw physical power. It dictates how strong your character is and whether they can move heavy things, destroy things more easily and do more impressive physical feats. It does not dictate speed, however.

Intelligence is, in its most basic form, how smart your character is and whether or not they can figure out how to solve a puzzle or not. People with higher Intelligence are better at devising strategies. Average Intelligence would be about 4/10 - Anything below 4/10 would make all puzzles difficult.

Speed is how fast your character can move and, to a slight degree, how quickly they can think. Characters with high Speed can dodge attacks more easily and perform actions more quickly. Speed is far from necessary in the Gauntlet Challenge, but it's very useful if you're neck and neck with someone and need to finish that extra second faster.

Finesse dictates one's aim, luck and, well, finesse. Someone with high Finesse is likely to hit targets more often, get better odds in games of chance and look good doing whatever they're doing - Which, if it pleases the Game Master, can help you out a lot, as doing well and looking good while doing so is the easier way to get support from the Game Master.

Oh my God, someone's reading the rules! I didn't know people even took these seriously anymore!

1. Read the whole description and maps section! Since you actually took the rules seriously... *Leaves laptop to laugh a bit* You probably did, but if you didn't, please do.

2. Keep in mind this roleplay's rating, and that this is a death game, not smutfest 2014. Thank you.

3. Don't control your team's other character or anyone's character but your own, and don't play God. Follow your stats, please.

4. NO ONE LINERS OR I WILL EAT YOUR THROAT.

5. Don't try to be perfect! Your character will be bad at something, at least.

6. If you didn't read the rules, I'll know. Trust me.

7. If you have to ask if it's a rule, it probably is. (Don't be a smartass about this rule, please!)

Simon stared intently at the two paths before him. He knew his limits, and was pretty sure he could make it through both of them, but what about his partner? He realized that he knew absolutely nothing about her, at all.

He turned to the other player dressed in red, all he knew about her was that her name was Celeste.

"So, uh, which one do you want to do? I can handle either of them I think, but uh..."

He trailed off, not knowing what to say really.

Celeste Chere, Red Team

Celeste looked at the two options before her - A long rope, which seemed to lead on for about 30 feet, or some platforms she could jump across. The thought of simply using the pillars to get past this challenge set was tempting, but at the same time getting shot with water balloons wouldn't be fun. Especially since the water balloons would be shot out of cannons, and not thrown, so they would definitely hurt to get hit by. She sighed and looked at the other option available, which was the tightrope - It certainly wouldn't be easy to walk across that, but at least she would be able to just focus on balancing.

Then again, this was competitive, wasn't it? She could hang back and sabotage other people... Though that didn't seem like the best idea. Having potential allies was better than having six people that would tear your throat out in a second.

"So, uh, which one do you want to do? I can handle either of them I think, but uh..." Her teammate, Simon, was beside her - She hadn't even noticed him until just then. "I think we should go for the pillars. Walking a tightrope probably wouldn't be a good idea," Celeste reasoned, "Since we would need to worry about the other teams trying to distract us while we're dealing with that. Plus, beneath the platforms and tightropes, there's water, right? I'm going to want to take off my shorts and shoes so getting hit by the water balloons or even falling off will only get my swimsuit wet, and maybe my hair. And for the tightrope, not wearing my shoes would hurt, I'd imagine, so."

She had talked too much, hadn't she? "Well, what matters is I'm going to take the pillars, and you can take the tightrope if you want - We'll meet up later on, if need be." Celeste took off her shorts and stepped out of her shoes - She was down to her swimsuit now, which was ideal for this situation, she thought. She pulled herself up onto the first pillar (With great difficulty). "Should I expect you to come with me, or no? I'll get going if you're not, but if you are... Hurry."

[Game Master Commentary will come when more people post]

Desmond was bored, really he was. Death games would surely inspire apprehension and other like emotions but he wasn't really feeling the death yet, so he was very, very bored. He looked at the pair of obstacles with almost zero interest. He was sure he could handle tightrope walking, it wasn't as if it was too hard or anything like that. The water balloons were harder, just so because in the air, if you are struck, you most likely fall. Again the balance was not an issue, it was the interruptions. He laughed at the simplicity of it all. He turned to his team mate, a girl named strangely similar to an almost insane character he never liked. "So, what do you think we should do?" He said almost lazily, already leaning towards the tightrope section. He wanted to go through this quickly, the extra challenge seemed something fun.

@Icefox11

"Uh, yeah! Of course I'm coming with you!" He stuttered slightly.

Secretly, Simon was immensely glad Celeste had chosen the pillars. He had little balance, and would struggle a bunch getting across the rope. He quickly pulled off his own shoes, but left himself fully clothed.

Quickly, he pulled himself up next to her on the first pillar, which he realized was much smaller than originally anticipated, the two were rather close, though not awkwardly so. He looked down the line of pillars, noting the locations of every cannon. They seemed to be placed specifically to get you in mid air.

"So, do you want to go first? Or shall I?" He asked, eager to get off of the uncomfortable space, and onwards with the challenge.

Abilene stared at the two options, pillars which she would lose balance on, and a tightrope. She rapidly made up her decision and went for the tightrope. She immediately switched around so her back was facing the ground she quickly scurried her way across the tightrope to the side, but not before being swung back up to her back facing the sky when she was hit by three water balloons. She got back on her legs and tried walking across, wrong decision she made. She fell off balance, but managed to grip her hands around the rope and manage to the other side.

Celeste Chere

"Uh, yeah! Of course I'm coming with you!"
Good. I wasn't planning on leaving you behind, either. Simon was close to her, not uncomfortably close, but it still felt a little awkward. Desperate for something else to focus on, since the last thing she wanted people to think was that she was into her teammate, she looked at the cannons - There seemed to be positioned so one would be shot out of the air and not off of the platforms. They appeared capable of turning, as well, so a moving target wouldn't be a problem. "So, do you want to go first? Or shall I?"

"I'm going to be an ass and say 'Ladies first'," Celeste joked and jumped to the second pillar. Then the third. "Hey, this isn't that hard, is it?" She felt as if she might have jinxed things there, but that didn't matter, did it? As long as she and Simon kept going at a good speed...

"WATER BALLOON!" Celeste ducked as quickly as she could and narrowly avoided a water balloon that had been hurtling toward her face. "Too close," Celeste muttered to herself and kept hopping along the pillars.

(Awkward. I forgot I had a post ready... Ahahaha. I'll just go over there now.)

"You okay? That was a close one."

Simon called out, to his teammate after seeing her close call with the water balloon. He followed a pillar behind Celeste, jumping to the one she left immediately after she jumped to the next. He timed his jumps so that he wouldn't come anywhere near the balloons when they launched. He had noticed they fired in a pattern, with a small period of time before a cannon fired again. They were getting closer to the end, and Simon began to get cocky, forgetting to wait before jumping, and getting smacked right in the face with a balloon as he landed. It burst open as it hit and sprayed him with water. He began to stumble backwards, just barely holding onto himself before falling to a watery grave below.

Shaking his head in shock, he continued hopping pillars, and eventually reached the other side with Celeste.

Death games. Sounds like fun. Minus the death part. Seeing as his teammate Abilene had already chosen a course, the tightrope course, Lance quickly followed in suit. Looking at the tight rope and the watery pit below, he quickly stepped onto it, humming a tune that was probably a bit loud. If I'm going to die here, might as well make some conversation. "This is way better then getting pelted by water balloons."

He went back to humming and moving along at a pace that was probably too fast. And at this too fast pace, his left leg slipped, landing him on the rope in a position that looked like he was riding an animal of sorts. Why did I have to land like this! It hurts like hell and looks extremely stupid! "Crap! Well, I'm probably not going to be able to get back up... So might as well do it like this." Muttering this to himself, slowly moved along in this awkward position.

He sighed, he didn't know if his team mate would make a decision any time soon so he started the trek across the rope. Yeah, he was going to have a bit of fun with this little obstacle. He may have not been the strongest, fastest or smartest, but he doubted anyone else had enough balance and skill to casually walked across the tightrope which was probably strained with the weight of three people and easily shifted. To him through it was less that walking in a straight line when extremely drunk. He chuckled a little, watching drunk people was funny, but he had the skill to do it even if he was drunk. And so he began walking, in a slow deliberate pace that made the tightrope bounce as much as possible. "Sorry, did not mean to do that!" He yelled at those before him when the long wire bounced as soon as he step foot on it "Come on, Luna, let's take a stroll!"

@Icefox11

"C'mon Lance!" She shouts from the other side as she sees Lance choose the pillars, probably a smarter idea instead of the tightrope. She watches as he jumps from pillar to pillar.

(I messed up the last post due to not seeing some information, so I edited it enough to clarify he chose the tightrope course. Sorry for the inconvenience.)

"Do you know how hard it is to get across a rope like that?" Pulling himself off the rope, he sat down a couple feet from the edge. "So what do we do next?" Eager to get to get to the next challenge, he wanted to get back to what he was doing before he was inducted into a game of death. Sleeping.

He landed on the other side with a chuckle. And then he frowned, looking behind him as he saw his teammate still dilly-dallying. Oh she is going to be the death of both of us. He did not know if he had the strength to carry her over the tightrope, the pillars were never an option anyway. He would not try either, he doubted the Game Master would like that. Still he was not last, he just hoped she would hurry and choose already so they could move on. "Come one LUNA, do something!" @Icefox11

Luna snapped her head and looked at him. "Sorry, spacing out for a moment. And contrary to my look, I am actually intelligent." She said, walking over the tightrope. She sighed, almost losing her balance. She wasn't one for being athletic. She sighed and continued on her way across. She was going to have a hard time dealing with him. He was kind of stiff. She sighed and walked across as fast as she could without falling before she landed on the other side.

"I never said anything of the sort." He said with strange laughter as she finally landed in front of him. "I would use quick since you got here so fast, snooty if you were ignoring me intentionally, air-headed or, easily-distracted self explanatory, pretty because you are or dramatic if you wanted to wait for the last moment, but I never doubted your intelligence." He blurted out rapid fire style as he looked around to observe the other competitors. "Or masochistic if you wanted the punishment, then there's also suicidal."

Luna wanted to blow his head off. She was none of those things. "I am in no way airheaded." She said, her eyes narrowing. She looked at him. "At the least I am not stiff as a board." She said, crossing her arms. He was so weird. He was just, ugg. There were not enough words to describe how annoying he was.

"Now how exactly am I stiff?" He asked with a smile so wide, it looked like it would break his face in half. The combination of smugness and self-satisfaction in it would make anyone want to punch him in the face. "I just don't want to die yet is all, life's too much fun. Also, i was just worried about you. Can't have my team mate dying on me during the first round now can I?

Simon sat on the cold floor, attempting to dry himself off after taking a balloon filled with water to the face.

He had noticed Celeste hadn't said a word since they got to the other side.

After a minute or so of trying to get water out of his hair in multiple different ways, he simply gave up any attempt at drying himself, and declared it a lost cause.

"Hey Celeste, what do you think the next challenge will be?" He spoke up, attempting to spark conversation with his team mate.

"You might not but I could." Luna seethed, glaring at him. He was so annoying. She wanted to punch that smile on his face. Nothing about him could make her think otherwise. He was smug, annoying, and not friendly in the slightest. She could have had any other person and it would have turned out better than this.
