They're pretty prominent in Norse and Celtic mythologies, though, even if in a different sense than the modern Tolkien (or God forbid pop fantasy) elf.

I just want to avoid the popular races. Get some uniqueness in here. And uh, as far as the whole pantheon thing, think more pagan style.

I find the concept interesting, but I don't know what to choose. I'd like to be a human discovering these things as an outsider. 


Or perhaps a fachan, banshee or dullahan.
