The Force of Justice - IC Thread

"How did you like that?" Dreamy asks Nisha. There is a new bounce in the Kairissian's aerial step as they float to the ground. "I hope we can do it again sometime!"

Once they are within earshot of the prison guards, Dreamy tries to put the attention on herself and away from Nisha. "Hi there!" she nods at the question and plays a little with her fiery hair while hovering about a foot off of the floor. She pays attention to the guards, a little more than is necessary - whatever it takes to keep their eyes on her. "That's right! I'm Dreamy the Starborn of the Force of Justice here with my assistant. I would like to converse with the Carbonite in charge, please." Reaching up into the fireproof neck-pouch she keeps concealed at the base of the back of her neck, she fumbles around a little until she finds her identification.

"Here you are, sir!" she presents it with a giggle as she openly admires the guards. "Boy, do you look tough!"

Dreamy is going to attempt to use her Presence (15) and Striking Looks in combination with her modeling Skill to be as eye-catching as possible without overdoing it - all to keep Nisha's presence as small as possible. Instead of using subterfuge, Dreamy wants to honestly become curious about the guards enough that it shows in her body language.

As the two supers approach the guard at the front gate and make their introductions, the security guard is immediately on the phone and his computer to verify your identities and that you have been called in to investigate. It does not take long for a man in an expensive suit to come out to you, and he says, "Welcome, welcome. Please, come on in. I had hoped for a rapid response from the Force of Justice, but I did not expect to have someone here so fast! I am Special Agent Dennis Abrams of the Secret Service. Thank you for coming so quickly."

He leads you into the mansion, talking as he goes. "I trust that you understand the sensitive nature of this situation? If it comes out that the Governor has a child with special powers, it could throw the state into chaos as anti-paramormal groups go nuts, accusing Governor Talbert of being a mutant, and that is how he has been elected. Totally false, of course. The Governor is a skilled politician, and is very good at his job and is leading California into the future with is progressive policies."

Once you are inside, Agent Abrams stops and looks at the two of you. "What can I do to help you? Where do you wish to start?"
With a nod, she reassures Agent Abrams, "Don't worry. We won't be spreading rumors or stories about the Governor and his family. We are more interested in finding out details on why it is that four heavily armed gunmen tried to make a snatch on the Governor's daughter. Was it a blackmail attempt? Ransom? Or something else completely?" Luminary looks over at Chaser, then says, "Assuming that they are available, lets start by talking to Governor Talbert and his wife, then we can speak with Rebecca."

Dreamy takes a good look around. It isn't every day she is in Sacramento's jail.

Chaser maintained an oddly stoic posture throughout the agent's introduction, nodding quietly to this and that until it was actually necessary for him to say something. When Luminary looked at him, he glanced back briefly, unsure what exactly she was trying to convey to him there.

"It'd be better if we could speak to them separate," he added. "Only if it's no trouble of course. Any inside stuff you can tell us would be great to hear too. We've only got short briefing on this one recent event, so anything that's been going on lately that you know of would be useful to hear about."

Colt had been awfully silent. But that was only because he had been doing some mental comparisons with the tech. But that would be an easy job for him, especially once he could get his hands on them. Thankfully the Force of Justice had a lot of pull. He had know doubt that they could arrange to look up some evidence. And Colt was sure that if he could understand the weapons, he could give his team a good heads up on what to expect... as well as give them a good lead of who and where.

"Call Justin Case." He said to his AI. "I think he can hook us up."
It takes only a moment for the call to be made, and in moments, Mr. Case is on the line. He says, "Ah, Terranaut. Good to hear from you. I presume that you are calling about the request put in by the Governor of California? What can I do for you?" When you explain what you wish, you can almost hear his nod. "Of course. I can have you gain access to the lock down where the weapons are being stored, and you can give them your professional once over without a problem."

"Ooooh, I like shadows! They're so mysterious and true!" Dreamy's blue eyes grow wider than usual when Nisha shares this. "In your realm, shadows Recycle? Wow. I never thought of shadows as dangerous - just what they hide. Would you please teach me later how to protect myself and others so they don't take our lifeglow?" She wasn't sure her telekinetic or telepathic powers would work on the shadows of Nisha's world, for Dreamy despite her energetic imagination, had precious little concept of magic.

Dreamy wonders inside for one long moment then reaches up and rubs the back of her fire-strewn neck. "I'm like most of my people who feel that shadows are just one of the many curiosities of the universe - as beautiful and natural as that lovely star this wonderful world of yours orbits. The Carbonites I've chatted with seem to think your star is really orange or red, but I find, like shadows, their understanding of your star is incomplete. I've visited your star; it's how I came to be here. Your atmosphere alters the color of the star. From the outside this world's atmosphere, your star is not red or orange, but white. But these are unknowns - hidden like shadows of a kind until their facts and truths are revealed!" Dreamy smiles and looks heavenward. "There is sooo much and explore and learn! Especially here on your world!"
"There is - though for every bit of wisdom, there's someone ready to exploit it for his own benefit. Like shadows. Most of the time, they simply are. They don't live, or recycle like you seem to call it. But some hide within to do their sinister deeds. They're a symbol of the unknown, the hidden, and most expect only the worst from what they don't know. Like Ultraweapon, perhaps, who expected the worst of you, even though he barely knew your name." She shrugs. "So in itself, shadows are no danger. It takes one to hide within, or one to manipulate them to do their bidding. Like me, for example, and many before me. Though I doubt that will be much of your concern." Whoever knows about the shadowy magic might now about the Book. Whoever knows about the Book will come for Nisha first. Hopefully.
"How did you like that?" Dreamy asks Nisha. There is a new bounce in the Kairissian's aerial step as they float to the ground. "I hope we can do it again sometime!"
"Well, that was... something else." Her smile says more than her words, this time. For just a moment, she forgot about the world out there; those moments are dangerous, and thus rare, but all the more precious. "There'll be plenty of places to be, over time; lots of chances to travel the same way." If tasks align, this would be preferred over many other ways to arrive elsewhere in time. Speedy, safe and without much chance for manipulations from the outside; hard to find anything better than that.

Before the two get to enter the building, Nisha will stroll over to whatever place nearby seems to attract the least attention; be it a side alley, or just a darker archway of a nearby building. A place that might be suited to arrive via teleport without drawing attention; since that what she tries to memorize the details for. You never know when a hasty retreat is in order, after all.

I'd like to place one of my teleport locations outside of the building, out of sight.

With that done, Nisha is quick to follow, and more than happy to let Dreamy do the talking for now. Say what you will, but she certainly got Nisha's point there, it seems, drawing all the attention. Nisha herself hands over whatever's necessary without much of a word, trying to appear like this is just another check like many before - it isn't. Not just because Dreamy is with her, this time, but also because she rarely takes the front door like this. Seems being part of the Force of Justice will change that, now...

Agent Abrams says, "Of course. Please, come with me. I'll take you to see Governor Talbert now." He leads you into the heart of the mansion, up to the office of the Governor. Mr. Talbert is sitting at his desk and is on the phone, and when he sees the two of you come in, he quickly ends the conversation and hangs up. Rising from his seat and coming around the desk, he offers up his hand to each of you.

He says, "Thank you for coming out so quickly. Of all the threats to my family, I have never thought that something like this would happen to me. I understand coming after me politically, but trying to snatch my daughter?" He shakes his head in frustration, and motions for you to take a seat on one of the chairs as sits in one. "This has me enraged, and any help I can give you, its yours. No one goes after my family and gets away with it."

The two of you are escorted to see the ranking officer of the facility, a large police captain named Chapman. He waves you into his office and offers to you a cup of coffee. "Welcome to the detention center. How can I be of assistance to the FoJ?"

Chaser shook the governor's hand in a soft, polite fashion. "It was no problem, sir. We understand this is an urgent matter." He looked briefly at the chair which the governor had pointed too before taking a seat, sitting stiff and upright with his hands in his lab.

"Governor Talbert, we assure you we'll do everything in our power to make sure they don't 'get away with it'. You have our word." Then...silence. Damn it, he thought. Miles had not actually prepared any questions to ask the governor, and immediately put on his best poker face while brainstorming potential leads.

Luminary nods. "I understand completely, and just as my associate said, we are here to keep these people from getting their hands on your daughter." She glances over at Chaser, then leans forward in her seat and says, "Sir, meaning no offense or disrespect, but from what we have seen so far in our initial reports would suggest that someone was using a mental power to control the animals in the area to come to the aid of your daughter, and it is highly unlikely that it was one of the security team or any of the witnesses. Has your daughter ever displayed any hints of paranormal powers before? It would explain a great deal about what has happened today."

Dreamy peers down into the offered cup looking down into the brown liquid as if it were an alien thing, then she lifts the cup and curls some of her hair around it to keep it warm. There, she simply enjoys the smell (if it's good coffee). As casually and polite as a person can be, Dreamy says, "I would like to meet with the incarcerated male Carbonite involved in the attempted abduction of Rebecca Talbert, please. Oh," she glances down at the cup, "and thank you for the coffee!"

"Thank you indeed." Nisha wholeheartedly agrees, taking a quick sip before eyeing the brew as if it'd already hold all the necessary answers. "If at all possible., we'd like to take a look at the man's medical files prior to that as well - and hear about any irregularities that might have been noticed. The reports outlined a number of... anomalies. Anything out of the ordinary would be of interest to Miss Starborn here as well. We'd also like to hear about the security measures you have instructed; the case might require an additional level of caution." She looks up, mustering the officer across the cup's rim. "Besides that - I'd like to hear your thoughts. Even if it's just speculations. This is your city, after all." She gestures, pointing out the surrounding. "That familiarity often makes a difference."

The Governor pauses for a moment before answering. He takes a deep breath and says, "Yes, Rebecca has always seemed to have some kind of special talent with animals. In her younger years, we thought it was just a . . . natural gift. It wasn't until a few years ago that Monica and I noticed that Rebecca seemed to be able to talk to Rusty, our pet Boxer. She can talk to the animals, kind of like Dr. Doolitle, and get them to do what she wants. Monica and I kept it quiet, not knowing just what to do about this."

He turns and pulls out a pamphlet and letter, and then hands it over to you. "Somehow, word of her gift got out. This letter was from a institute that claimed to have the staff and talent to be able to teach her how to master her abilities. We were still debating our options and doing some research on this school when this attack on my family happened. Monica is convinced that there is a connection between the school and the kidnapping attempt, since we were taking our time in making a decision. Personally, I don't know." He looks up at the two of you with a desperate expression on his face. "Can you please help protect my daughter? She is my life, and I can't imagine life without her."

The coffee is adequate, and there is plenty of sugar and creamer to help make it more palpable. As you drink it and bring up your requests, the Warden nods. "Yes, all of that can be arranged for you. Your man Mr. Case called ahead, and we have already begun to pull together what files we have available for this Harvey Miller. Right now, we have him waiting for a lawyer to escort him to his arraignment on his charges, so you may not be able to do much talking to him if his suit keeps him quiet."

He guides you to a conference room where several files have been laid out, showing that the police here have been busy gathering info on your perp. "Harvey Miller, 35 years old, out of Redondo, California. When he is not trying to kidnap children, Mr. Miller is a appliance repairman with no criminal record, but a past tour of duty in Afghanistan in the Army as a truck driver. According to the Army, he was not a discipline problem at all, and overall, he was unremarkable in his performance reviews. Now, he is an employee of the Samsung company, using his mechanical skills to fix washing machines. Right now, there are several investigators trying to find some kind of connection between Harvey and the two deceased. So far, zippo, but it is still early in the investigation."

"When are you wanting to see Mr. Miller?"

"Uh," the Kairissian guesses. "Now, please?"

"Uh," the Kairissian guesses. "Now, please?"
The Warden nods as if he were expecting that answer, and he reaches out to a nearby phone and punches a few buttons. After a short conversation, he says, "Huh. It seems that Miller's lawyer has petitioned the court for an early appearance, so he's being prepped for transport now. If you hurry, you can meet his ambulance and ride along with him to the courthouse and talk to him as you go. It would also save me the trouble of having to pull some guards off their rounds early, because what kind of trouble could he possibly cause for a member of the Force of Justice? I'll have Corporal Barnes here escort you along."

"Okay!" was all Dreamy could think to say. It sounded to Dreamy as if Warden Chapman were doing everything reasonably within his power to assist Nisha and her. Until they were shown the way, Dreamy just continued to enjoy warming the coffee and smelling it while silently bopping along to the songs that played happily in her mind - Eidetic Memory was such a very useful trait to have!

"I'd say that sounds like a plan, at least - thank you. Ready when you are, Corporal." As if to contradict her own words, Nisha helps herself to another cup of coffee, willing to enjoy the dark brew while she can. "How long will the ride be, approximately?"

Chaser snags the pamphlet and opens it, holding it between him and Luminary so they can both read at the same time. His eyes dart across the paper at superhuman speed, and he puts it away perhaps a bit too early. "We'll look into it anyway. No lead it to small if it could help up protect your daughter, Governor Talbert."

"And you have no idea how they found out about her power?"

As you are being escorted to the prisoner transport, your guide tells you, "The ride is only about fifteen minutes to the courthouse, assuming that the traffic is running smooth. I've had rides take as long as twenty from the heavy traffic around the courthouse. Should give you some time to talk to the prisoner."

Your first look at Harvey Miller is unremarkable. He is dressed in the standard orange jumpsuit, has shackles on his hands and feet, and has a sizable limp from the many dog bites that he had received during the attempt to kidnap the girl. He is a just about 5'8", weighs probably 190 pounds, and is slightly balding. Doesn't look the part of a kidnapper, but that raises the question of, just what is a kidnapper supposed to look like?

He is being led to a large van, and you are offered the opportunity to ride in back with him to get your chance to talk with him before his arrival at the courthouse. In the front, two officers slide into the seats and a third climbs in with you in the back. Harvey looks at Dreamy and Nisha and says, "What the hell is this? Sticking me in there with some freakin' muties? I don't want nothin' to do with them!"

"Understandably." Perhaps. This man, whether by his own choice or not, just recently witnessed the supernatural. Likely, that one moment was enough for a lifetime. Doesn't mean that Nisha likes this man's tone. "If it's any comfort: This will be the only time we meet if you so choose, and it won't be for long, either. Just a short trip from here to there." She takes a seat within the vehicle, musters the man for a moment. Without showing too much of her own face in turn, for he might be connected to the devil himself for all she knows. "Mister Miller, your particular case has raised many questions. We had hoped that you might have an answer or two to share. More importantly, you might have questions yourself, the kind that few are qualified to answer. I am qualified. With me is Dreamy Starborn, who recently joined the Force of Justice. While she can't undo what has happened, her word would have some weight during the upcoming trials, from a purely practical perspective. Only if you so wish, of course."

A shrug. The chains around her arm can be heard, though the gifted sweater restricts their movements to the minimum. "You're free to quietly ignore our presence, but good opportunities might be scarce. No word you say will reach court to your detriment. You're safe. You have nothing to lose. And I'm all for second chances once the past has been resolved. There's a life waiting out there, and even the best lawyer can only do so much. So - ask away." She eyes both Dreamy and Miller after that, giving either of them room to speak up.

Throughout the trip, Nisha will keep an eye on the officer in the van's back as well; better safe than sorry.

Harvey looks confused as he looks at Dreamy. "Hey. I know of you. You're the lady in the perfume commercials. Some kind of . . . alien, right? You're not a mutie." He looks over at Nisha, and says, "I don't know about you,. You a mutie?"

The guards push Harvey into the van and bolts him into his seat. "Quiet down, Miller, until we get moving. Then I hope for your sake you sing like a bird for these two. Might save your ass from a lengthy prison term. Kidnapping a kid. Real class act."

In a minute, everyone is loaded up into their places and the transport van starts out. The van is not driving under lights and sirens, trying to keep a lower profile, and everything goes well as you drive along. As you drive, Harvey seems to warm up to Dreamy, asking her questions about being a movie star and an alien, his mind seeming to be all over the map with his questions.

It isn't until a cloud seems to pass over Harvey's face and he suddenly says, "I'm a dead man. They are going to kill me to keep me quiet, aren't they?" He looks defeated, all hunched over. He seems ready to spill what he knows if you give him the right nudge.

Silanon Silanon Please give me a 3d6 roll for your Danger Sense

Chaser snags the pamphlet and opens it, holding it between him and Luminary so they can both read at the same time. His eyes dart across the paper at superhuman speed, and he puts it away perhaps a bit too early. "We'll look into it anyway. No lead it to small if it could help up protect your daughter, Governor Talbert."

"And you have no idea how they found out about her power?"
He shakes his head. "None whatsoever. Unless someone on my staff slipped this secret out, but I can't imagine who that would be." Then, a voice from behind you suddenly says, "It was me." Looking back over your shoulders, you recognize the Governors wife, an attractive middle aged woman named Susan Talbert coming into the room. Her husband looks shocked. "What?!? How could you do that? To our family? To our daughter?!? Do you realize what almost happened? How many lives were lost today, trying to protect Rebecca from these men?"

She calmly replies, "She is a mutant. It is not in our power to be able to handle her and these powers that she has. We need this Institute to do what we can't"

The Governor looks exasperated. "I still can't believe you did this without talking to me about this first. What am I supposed to say to Greg's family? he died trying to protect OUR daughter from these kidnappers, and they sure as hell didn't learn about this from me!"

Susan seems unfazed. "Yes, I kept this from you, because I know you wouldn't be open to listening to reason."

The door opens up again, and a young teen girl enters the office, clearly Rebecca. The girl is flanked by a large German Sheppard, and the dog is looking very intent. She says, "Mom? Dad? I heard some shouting. Is everything ok?"

"I don't know about you,. You a mutie?"
Technically, only eating once a week probably counts as a mutation. So do other things that come with her knowledge. This, however, seems not like the best time to mention that. Besides, Nisha still feels human, and that's what counts, right? Still, she's happy to let the guard take over, and lead the conversation elsewhere. Good thing that having Dreamy around seems to naturally bring up agreeable topics to speak about. For a while, that is.
"I'm a dead man. They are going to kill me to keep me quiet, aren't they?" He looks defeated, all hunched over. He seems ready to spill what he knows if you give him the right nudge.
"Few like to leave loose ends behind." That's brutally honest, but such is the world. "So they might try. One reason why Dreamy is here, actually. Few places where you would be safer, I'd assume. Though only stopping 'them' will mean safety in the long run."

There's questions to be asked, Words to be said. But before that happens, there might be something else... something sudden... a threat, unseen...
Nisha's danger sense is at 14-, well-practiced by her paranoia. Let's see if the dice cooperate...

Twice, Dreamy gives serious consideration to letting Nisha - a clearly competent Carbonite with many positive qualities besides the fact that she has made a great impression on Dreamy thus far - take over this entire affair. Dreamy's youth and inexperience with Carbonites begin to weigh on her. She does not want to screw up what appears to be their only shot at helping the Force of Justice in this delicate matter.

But then, the Kairissian's ever-curious mind engages. What about Harry here? He is a Carbonite, Incarcerated for crimes, believing he is on his way to Recycling and thus ending his existence as he knows it, and clearly unhappy and afraid for it. What being would want to rejoin the universe under these conditions?

And what in the galaxy could a "mutie" be? It sure didn't sound good.

Still, Dreamy feels she has a sort of duty to Harry here, not just to the Force of Justice or the Carbonites she was trying to help or her fellow Kairissians that she was created by, but the universe at large that she and all things ever would be a part of for all time - Harry included.

It isn't until a cloud seems to pass over Harvey's face and he suddenly says, "I'm a dead man. They are going to kill me to keep me quiet, aren't they?" He looks defeated, all hunched over. He seems ready to spill what he knows if you give him the right nudge.

Here was a being who needed kindness. Perhaps the Carbonites would Recycle him for what he had done; she didn't know enough about Carbonite law to know. Dreamy was such a naturally-honest person that the idea of using subterfuge or bribery to get Harry to talk never entered her mind. Instead, she really wanted to help him - especially if these were his last hours on Earth. For Dreamy felt one should live their lives to the fullest, learn all that they could, share with others that they might grow too, and die not with fear but with satisfaction and readiness to move on to whatever paths the universe had in store for them.

Dreamy reaches over to put a comforting hand on Harry's shoulder if it seems he'll be all right with that. "I don't know, Harry," and it was true. "I'd really give you a hug if I thought it would make you feel better. We're here to ask you - why did you do this thing, Harry? What happened?"

The man looks at Dreamy and flinches a bit when you put your hand on his shoulder, almost as if he was expecting you to hurt him. Perhaps he feels that he deserves to be hurt? Harry lets out a sound that is almost a sob as he answers with, "I don't know how the White King found out about her being a mutant. I'm too far down the chain of command to be in the loop. I just know that he ordered the snatch and grab on the girl. Hell, maybe he didn't know she was a mutie, and was just trying to get her as leverage on the Governor. I don' know. We showed up and everything was going good. We had taken out her escorts, and then suddenly, every freakin' animal in the area went nuts! Had to be her. I almost put a cap in her head right then and there, but the King wanted her alive and unharmed, and you don't piss off the King."

Suddenly, Nisha can feel the distinct tingle in the back of her neck that signals that danger is imminent. Something bad is about to happen.

The level of tension between the Governor and his wife is making things a bit uncomfortable for Deborah. She clears her throat, then says, "Um, well, that is a discussion that is most likely left for the two of you to have on your own. Right now, however, we are dealing with a very real threat to your family. Let us focus on that. Now, why don't Chaser and I go talk to Rebecca? We can hear from her about what happened."
