Fantasy The End of All Things (Dark Medieval Fantasy)

Roleplay Availability
Hello everyone! I’ve been a longtime member here and want to give a story that I’ve been working on for some time one more chance as a roleplay. I’m hoping to get to know some fellow great writers to help me out. I believe I have a story and setting that will interest quite a few people. It’s a rework/reimagining of a roleplay I tried here quite a few years ago. So if you recognize me or the plot, feel free to shout me out!

So, to cut to the chase, I’m looking for some dedicated and experienced writers to help me flesh out and organize the lore for this world and story that I’ve been working on for the better part of a decade. The new title of the project is “The End of All Things” and it will be a dark medieval fantasy with an apocalyptic storyline. The setting is akin to George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire”, Kentaro Miura’s “Berserk”, & Glen Cook’s ”The Black Company”.

A quick synopsis:

The massive continent of “Seldwa” is home to many kingdoms and nations, each with their own long and complicated histories with each other. There is a rare state of peace in the modern day, begging to be broken. The leaders and denizens of Seldwa are unaware that quickly approaching their known world is an ancient, Lovecraftian space-god known as “Engriact” whose only form of sustenance is the “life force” of a world.

To prepare the planet for his arrival, Engriact sends his “Heralds of Death”, beings from worlds he has consumed in the past millennia that are cursed with immortality so they can serve Engriact for eternity. Their job is to end the lives of as much of the population as they can before Engriact’s arrival, causing the planet to swell with their “souls” and giving Engriact a larger “meal”.

This is where the characters come in. They are just citizens of this world as this chaos very slowly unfolds. Some will slowly realize the strange occurrences around them, while others may find themselves victims of, or manipulated by the Heralds. There is a strong emphasis and focus on character development.

I had much of the lore and other story points all worked out on an old computer that had the hard drive go kuputz (such as the nations and their histories), but thankfully most of it I can still pull from my head. I do want to rework a few elements which is why I’m poking around for some interest. This is something that will probably take a long time to get off the ground before we would actually be roleplaying, but I’m willing to put in the weekly work if I can find a friendly and talented group wants to work with me.

I am strictly looking for 18+ writers as I plan on exploring adult themes in this story. Themes such as

-Racism and racial equality
-Classism
-Alcoholism and addiction
-Mental health and PTSD
-Generational trauma
-The ugly realism of medieval warfare

Also, this is a low fantasy world. Very little amount of any magic or anything supernatural, especially at the beginning of our story. There are only humans on this world, split up into diverse cultures and races.

So what do you think? There’s a hell of lot more to this thing, but I figured I’d slap this little interest check together while at work to see if anyone is interested in the concept and helping me build this. Hope to hear from some interested parties soon!

Welcome to "The End of All Things"!

A vast & detailed dark fantasy world full of fanatical holy knights, masked assassins for hire, mentally ill monarchs ordering executions, supernatural entities pulling strings in the shadows, legendary kings of the past, despicable bandit clans, warrior societies training for the near future, disgraced nobles, realistic/gritty characters, laughs, cries, gasps, pirates, deep issues (addiction, political corruption, PTSD, vengeance, racial equality, destiny through bloodlines, and much more), murder mysteries, love, war, blazing fires, brooding mercenaries, giant lizard-beasts, cities built into mountains, an ocean where the sun does not shine, sea-serpents, and a path to the end of the world.

Can you stop it? Want to help contribute to the creation of this world? Inquire here with a comment if interested.

Be forewarned, multi-paragraph posting.

_____

A quiet peace has reigned over the beautiful, colossal continent of Seldwa for just a few short years. The continent, which covers over half of the planet's surface and is home to a massive portion of the planet's population, is split into several nations...

The Ice Empire of T'Odis

A shrill and cold land, governed by strict laws and severe living conditions; it sits on the northern end of the continent and is protected by the Great Ice Mountains. It's chalk-white haired citizen's immense stature feels influenced by these mountains, as much as their harsh language must be bore from the deathly winters they must forge through.

The Holy Queendom of Roadalia

A Queendom whose cold climate and land is protected and isolated by mountains and walls. The Great Ice Mountains protect its borders from the North while the remaining land is kept safe by the walls they have built. It's people, once part of Kilderland centuries ago, are now an isolated theocracy and are seen as fanatics to outsiders.

The Old Conquered Kingdoms of Kilderland

Spanned by green, hilly fields with a few mountain ranges, this collection of kingdoms borders the Dark Seas on the east. Its land is vast and open; it has a wide variety of terrain. The headstrong nobility of this country has waged war with nearly every other nation through the centuries, while its peasant class has suffered the burdens of the aftermath. Some of these major wars gave birth to several of their neighboring nations.

Intrigued, though I'll admit I find the Silver Surfer approach in a setting such as this somewhat jarring ^^" Will keep an eye on the thread nonetheless.

Feel free to ask any questions. I wouldn’t imagine a literal “silver surfer” being, it’s just the closest character in fiction that mirrors the roles of the “Heralds” that I could think of.

I'm definitely interested. I realize this post is a little old but if you're still working on the idea, What exactly do you need help with fleshing out the world or character role concepts? Also question, When it comes to the Heralds of death is there a tactic to their killing similar to fmab (if you've seen that show) or is it more sporadic and random or maybe both just depending on the Herald?

This setting, world, and overall story are something I’ve had created for the better part of 15 years (I’m a little older so I’m not sure about any acronyms for shows, but I’ll look it up real quick). So the majority of the information exists, I just wanted to rewrite some things and make the world bigger. I need to find some free time in the next couple of days and get some more lore up, but I wanted to see if the overall idea interested anyone first. Looking for some like-minded writers to link up with so that I can explain the world and story in a more conversational way.

Several of the countries and their citizens are completely fleshed out, while others are still in the concept phase. I’m going to need help building them out and incorporating them into the world and history. And although I pride myself in coming up with lore, I am awful at organizing and presenting it in an easily digestible way. 🤣

I’m on my way home from a long night at work so my brain is a little frazzled, but if you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask as many as you need. Ask them here or PM me no problem.

It's all good. I kinda have ideas already but most are more so character based than world based but I have a few as well. I guess I'm generally more interested in the lore but I can wait till you find the time to write out more.

Out of all mentioned inspirations I really only recognize "A song of Ice and Fire" and "Berserk" and I only actually know, know "Berserk" lol. So maybe if you could give an quick idea of the power system such as the Heralds. Since they all come from different worlds, does the concept of their powers differ to the very core, is there core foundation for the characters of Seldom that has a set of rules for their world? While the heralds each have their own rules and abilities dictated to their own worlds? Like is somethings being completely inconceivable or undoable possible. Or is the power foundation set across all worlds?
I don't know if I asked that in a way that it made sense or not.

I think I get what you’re asking me. I think I can answer by just explaining more what the Heralds exactly are. Engriact itself does not have a corporeal form. It’s a giant, space cloud-god that is as old as existence. It sustains itself on a planet’s life-force, but in order to efficiently do so, the planet needs to be full of said life-force. If a planet is full of life, then it is abundant with life-force, but the life-force is in use within the beings of the planet. To feed properly, Engriact needs the majority of the planet’s life to die in a short period so that their life-force returns back to the planet.

To accomplish this, over the millennia Engriact has chosen different beings from planets he’s consumed and has made them immortal. They retain no memory of who or what they are, and when they form their bodies on the planet they’ve been sent to, they essentially begin working on instinct. They retain whatever abilities their different species had when they were mortal (e.g. one is a mind-reading shapeshifter, another is a massive hulk-like being with super strength, another was a genius inventor from a more advanced planet). They are humanoid but have physical features that show they are not human such as pale green skin and yellow eyes with slit pupils.

Their job is to kill as much life on the planet in as short a period of time as possible (usually 3 years). Although they have no memory of who they are, they do retain portions of their personalities, so they each have their own methods of accomplishing this goal.

Beings with these abilities would be INCOMPREHENSIBLE to the citizens of our planet. Magic and supernatural existences are extremely rare in this world. Of course different cultures have their different beliefs and religions, but people witnessing anything that can be described as “supernatural” just does not happen often (not that it doesn’t happen). Think of the level of magic and supernatural stuff in Berserk during the first arc before the Godhand is released.

This will be the eventual goal of the protagonists in this series, to convince the people of this world that these beings exist and are causing the slowly escalating chaos in the world. The shapeshifting mind-reader, Shala, is using her abilities to manipulate the leaders of the world into the first ever multi nation world war.

Did that answer your question hopefully?

Sorry I thought I sent a reply, Rip. To sum it up, Yeah that kinda answers my question. If you need/want any help or recommendations from me just let me know. I definitely look forward to be able to play it out.

To clarify, we are both roleplayers and writers that will help you build the world?
Yes, I’m looking for people to help bounce lore ideas back and forth with, to create world NPCs, locations, wildlife, historical events, etc. I have the backbone of the world and plot created, but there’s still so much more that can be fleshed out.

I am actually incredibly interested in this setting. Not only just for the setting, but for the themes you are planning to tackle. I can’t guarantee that I can assist in building the setting (as I am otherwise preoccupied) but I would love to participate in it.

I absolutely appreciate the interest. I’m not 100 percent sure when I’ll get this thing off the ground, but when I do, you’ll be one of the first I let know.
