Setting is mostly 16th century Sengoku Japan, but this takes place in an alternate world called the Empire. Civil conflicts are active in the Empire, ill-tempered Daimyos are either waging war in the open or secretly for power, the western strangers are spreading their lifestyle and religion, and extremist groups that are convinced in the salvation of the Great Snake hoping to overthrow the Emperor.
Numerous battles have occurred between conflicting daimyos and had caused many victims, but the Emperor dismissed it as mere skirmishes.
Gunpowder is available, but limited. Aside from single shot muskets, arquebus, cannons, and fireworks, they're pretty rare. Although, if you're a chemist or an inventor then I think it's okay to expand on it.
There are limited western establishments in the Empire. Your character can even be an explorer from a faraway western kingdom.
Magic exists and is recognized.
Kotodama is spellcasting and the like. Usually practiced by monks or secretly by hermits, outcasts, or secret societies dwelling in the woods.
Ki is spiritual energy manifesting as mystical physical powers. Usually rudimentary, you don't need incantation, but focus, rigorous training and a trained mind can allow you to use them. Ki is used by martial artists commonly.
Regular magic is practiced by mages of the western kingdoms.
