An urgent knock sounded on the princess's bed chamber door, startling her from her sleep. Groaning in protest, Kaliyah sat up in her bed and called out, "Who is it?" Judging by the lack of light emitting from the large window above her, she guessed it was still fairly early in the morning.
"Tis' your maid, m'lady. The king's requesting yourself quickly, somethin's amiss!" Because of the maid's lack of proper upbringing, her voice was sluggish and the pronunciation off a bit. The princess, being her gracious self, never minded this small detail about the castle's servants. In reality, her opinion on having staff in the first place was that it was wrong, so Kaliyah tried helping them as best she could.
"Please come on in." Kaliyah asked politely before sliding out of bed to get dressed. She found a simple gray tunic and slipped it on with a pair of tights and riding boots. She doubted her father needed her for anything formal, so the clothes would do. Besides, she preferred to dress for comfort rather than formality.
The maid entered and rushed over to the girl, ushering her toward the door quickly once she noticed that the princess was dressed. They hurried down the stone staircase, the maid's arm on Kaliyah's arm to guide her.

They found her father pacing in the meeting hall, alone. He was rubbing his dark beard, brows furrowed, seeming worried. "Father?" Kaliyah inquired quietly. His head snapped toward her, a sudden expression of relief flooding over him. "Oh Kali, I was worried. We must go, there are armed horsemen riding to the castle as we speak. I have assigned you a protector, someone to watch over you when I am absent. These are unsafe times to be a princess of your likeness." Her father explained, his expression of worry deepening. "He should be here any moment."
Before the princess could reply, the large wooden doors to the hall opened.
From the door stepped two men covered from head to toe in black garb, long midnight cloaks with the hood pulled up enshrouding them and obscuring most of their features from this distance. Once the two had covered half of the room they both fell to one knee and bowed their heads before the king and princess. The figure on the left was first to raise himself up and address the two of them. "Your Majesty, I have brought the boy. He has been completely briefed on his assignment. No one will be able to lay a hand on the princess so long as he still breaths," The first figures voice was etched and scratched by years of fighting and killing.
Given a signal to cue him, Kvothe lifted himself up beside his captain and removed his hood. Calculating eyes scanned the king once before focusing on the princess for many moments longer. "Your Highness," There was an air of casualness dotting his speech as he performed a slight bow, mostly directed towards Kaliyah. As if a direct meeting with the king and his daughter was not the most prestigious event in his short life. Glints of silver sparked out from beneath his cloak as he bent forward, revealing just the tip of the deep iceberg that made up his concealed weaponry.
Ignoring the demeanor of his most adept student, the first figure continued, his focus directed towards the king himself. "If you do not object, Your Majesty, I suggest we move to a more secure environment as soon as possible. I would like to have you under my men's watch long before the enemies' horses arrive. Kvothe will provide more than adequate protection for your daughter and he has orders to signal should anything go awry."
Even after straightening back up, Kvothe's gaze never strayed far from Kaliyah. As she was his charge to protect, he would be constantly keeping her in sight from now on, always holding her in his peripherals. Just as he was trained to do. A charge and a target have little difference, save you kill one and protect the other. Either way he needed to watch her until her movements and action became as second nature to him as his own were.
Kaliyah turned as the two secretive looking men entered. Judging by the metal clasp with her father's emblem fastened to their cloaks, she could tell they served him. Although, she couldn't recall ever having seen uniforms of such mysterious nature. Their weapons even appeared foreign to her.
One of the men stood, addressing himself to the king. His demeanor was calm, but their was urgency in his voice. Something horrible was to happen soon if the two royalty weren't evacuated from the castle. As the second man stood, Kaliyah examined his facial features. He seemed rugged, but in a handsome way. His face was expressionless as far as she could tell. So this was the man who was assigned to protect her from now on, she thought to herself.
Kvothe's gaze intensified as his eyes rested on the princess, studying her. Kaliyah became somewhat nervous and uncomfortable under his scrutiny, causing her to blush deeply and stare to the ground. The king turned to the two men, his jaw set in determination. "I understand more of my assassins are waiting outside, preparing for the coming attack?" He asked as he approached the elder of the two assassins.
"Have your boy guide my daughter outside. The stable hand has prepared steeds in the courtyard. I request that I be located somewhere far from her. If any of the enemy's men infiltrate the kingdom, I would hope they find me before the precious princess." The king ordered, glancing back to his daughter.
"Of course Your Majesty, some have been sent to watch over the nobles, and a few have been placed among the royal guard should anyone get near the castle, but the majority are stationed out front. Every one is willing to happily give their lives to protect this country," The older assassin assured his king and nodded his head in response to the orders. Without hesitation he turned his gaze swiftly to Kvothe. "Kvothe go, you know your duties."
This order sprung Kvothe to life like some kind of spell. Even at his size his agility was remarkable and before everyone had a chance to blink he was at the princess's side. "This way princess," His voice was softer now than when he had spoken a moment before but there was still a regimented discipline coating the words. One arm swung his cloak up and around Kaliyah, partially concealing her as he ushered her towards the a different door than the one he and his captain had previously entered in, ignoring many of the boundaries that were usually placed between the princess and others. Swiftly he nudged her out of the hall, leaving the older assassin to begin escorting the king out through the main entrance. The two of them were to take the long route out to the courtyard and head in different directions with the aim that any possible spies watching would relay information based on the king's location rather than the princess's. Who would leave shortly after the king and the bulk of his assassin escort departed.
Kvothe remained silent as he led Kaliyah through a series of corridors normally reserved for use by the servants. Several of them were busy running back and forth with whatever chores they were assigned yet every one ducked into side passages to get out of their way, few of them feeling brave enough to make eye contact with the assassin. Although the king's assassins were a secret organization, rumors tend to spread and these rumors served to steer people away from asking too many questions. The entire time they traversed through the castle his hand remained protectively placed on her shoulder to keep their bodies together and conceal her from behind.
Pushing through one final door they were greeted by a rush of brisk, early morning air and Kvothe allowed his arm to fall from around Kaliyah. "Come, I need to get you away from here with haste," He stated with little emotion in his voice as he led the way towards the stables
The king nodded to his daughter as if to reassure her that everything would be alright. Upon order, Kvothe approached the princess and began to guide her quickly from the hall. Kaliyah noted his slight change in tone and the way he helped conceal her. He was cautious, to say the least. But she wasn't going to argue.
The princess dutifully remained close by his side as they rushed from the castle. He had the aura of confidence without it seeming arrogant. She admired that. The chill of the early morning stung Kaliyah's face almost immediately as they slipped through a rather secretive doorway that led to the courtyard. It was fall, so the mornings were usually very much on the cold side. The girl shivered in her thin tunic and tights.
As they neared the stables, two horse's came into view. Each was equipped with a saddle and bridle, ready to be off whenever they were told. A few knight's steeds were scattered here a there as they prepared them for battle. Armor was being pounded into shape and repaired. The high strung horses snorted their annoyance as many a stable hand rushed to a fro. Archers and knights were retrieving weaponry from the adjacent armory. The noise and activity was overwhelming.
Kaliyah, being an experienced rider, stepped into the first stirrup and swung her leg over the horse's back to the second all in one swift motion. The beast she had been chosen from the two was smaller so that it would be easier for her to mount and dismount if need be. She immediately took hold of the reins, preparing to bolt out of the courtyard as soon as Kvothe said.
Her mind was racing as she considered the possibilities of their location. Her father could have just wanted her relocated to the town. But, knowing him, he probably wished his only daughter to be far, far away from the castle walls. With these thoughts occupying her mind, the princess turned to her accompanying assassin and waited for any orders.
