The Dreamers
The Dreamers
East Village, 1982
This part of town was made to foster, well, the poor, but also the infamous starving artist. It's full of mysticism and home. There're creature comforts to be had, but this is your home. Many of you have come from different states to be here-perhaps even countries. You're welcome all the same. Consider this as a haven for expression, where you meet friends you believe will survive you a lifetime, but beware of the heightening sense of inadequacy you'll begin to feel. You might start to sell out and ponder your artistic integrity. You'll probably lose yourself before you even realized you had a grip. I sure as hell couldn't tell you. We'll find out soon enough whether you'll make it.

Surrounded by the grime of the city, inspiration seeps from the edges of buildings, the stoops where people sit, smoking, and the open windows during the summer. The coldness of the streets seeps into its peopleβs bones when theyβre walking from one end of the street to the other. This place is home to many like-minded people who share the same experiences this city gives. New York and its creations have a symbiotic relationship, breathing life into each other.
The East Village harbors this same sentiment. However, it holds much more decay, the smells of death and trash, and the starving artist spirit. It encourages human companionship as opposed to material accompaniments (Mostly because things end up gross around here anyways), and it fosters self-discovery in its plain presentation.
Many become an archetype, a member of the different art cultures, once they leave the confines of their humble beginnings, and, because of this, these artists are not all created with the right intentions. Not everyone simply wants to impact the world, and it's up to you to decide if that is agreeable or not. This city will paint a much more complex picture of humanity than you were prepared for. It will create your adulthood. It will create your career. It will cause you to comprehend a completely different identity of morality.
Itβs 1982, and the country is in a national recession. Itβs 1982, and youβre just setting out on your own-- to make it on your own. Itβs 1982, and you feel like everything has already been discovered. Still, you have desires, hopes, dreams. Somehow, you find yourself with an illustrious group of people. They complicate your entire reality, and youβre left to create a sensible group out of this mess of people, including yourself. Will you all "make it"? Whatβs integrity? How high will you climb before you fall? What will this city make out of you?

the setting.
Pammy's: On 6th St. between 1st and 2nd Ave. It's the home to many minimum-wage jobs for kids looking to make a quick buck. You'll usually find a slew of nursing home attendees, but, around 2 a.m., young people swing by the place for a grilled cheese to soak up the liquor. Surprisingly, Pammy doesn't actually exist. Lena Ingrid, a stout, middle-aged woman, owns it.
Elmore's Delicatessen: On 3rd St. between Avenue A and 1st Ave. Actually owned by Elmore Burgh, this is a hub for plenty of people on their lunch break. Working here also means minimum wage but also the stress of cutting meat while people screech about needing to get back on the other side of town.
Heartbreak Hotel: On 1st St. between 2nd Ave. and 1st. This is... well... it's a peep show. However, it plays twice as much as Pammy's and Elmore's and you don't have to split tips. You still come home smelling like salami though...
City Square Studio: On 6th Street between Avenue A and 1st Ave. Much to the confusion of people, this is a disco club and not a recording studio or a park. This is also a place young people hit up on Wednesday nights where there's nickel shot night.
The Hypnotize: On 6th St. between 1st Ave. and Avenue A. This is the more popular club amongst the group. You can usually find a punk band playing there every night. The bar is terrible at carding people, and they say that it's because Earl Johnson, the joint's owner, knows "his audience." A lot of young ones also work here due to the lack of care on Earl's part.
October Standard Gallery: On 5th St. between 1st. Ave. and 2nd. It's owned by Woody Tillotson, one of the playable characters. It's a small gallery with simple white walls that still manage to have mold peaking through despite a new paint job. Many different types of work could be featured here.
New Age Bookstore: On 1st Ave. between 3rd and 4th St. Owned by Lawrence Spinelli, the New Age Bookstore has a multitude of different types of novels, anthologies, and books on philosophy. It also is known for its spectacular readings and numerous cats that will sit in your lap while you're reading.
B&R Publishing: On Avenue A between 3rd St. and 2nd. It's a new company, but it has already made a name for itself amongst the local bookstores that host their authors' novels. It's owned by Barry Golden and Richard Porter, life-partners who are known to frequent discos.
Regency Modeling: On 2nd St. between Avenue A and 1st Ave. Liza Margaret Snelling is looking for the best of the best. Even if you're not a model, she has connections. She produces her own magazine, Regent, which often features many of her models and designers. On occasion, she is also known to produce a collection every couple of seasons.
Cold Case Recordings: On 2nd Ave. between 3rd and 4th St. Known for its experimental work, Cold Case has recorded a few hits for an indie record company. Owned by Maude DeVaulle and her husband, Louie Waters, it's a home for everyone who signs them. They're known for their DIY attitude and outlandish approaches to music-making.
**As the roleplay progresses, more places will be added, but this is good start.

[The Southern Belle] rose into adulthood under strict ruling. Her dreams, stereotypically, were scattered to the winds by her parents. Coming from a semi-rich family, [The Southern Belle] believed that the rest of the world was as affluent as she was. Therefore, she left home on her 18th and ran to the city. It was the place she'd seen in all the movies and Vogue, but then she realized that wasn't the part she could afford. Begrudgingly, she's in the East Village with a large reality check. Despite her onset homesickness, stubbornness and ambition are keep her here.

[The Romanitc] lived most of her childhood in France. However, in her early teenage-dom, she immigrated and found herself in the city. From an early age, she's had her head filled with fantastical ideas- ones that could never come true. She dreams of wild fantasies that she knows won't come true, such as her dream to become a designer and live by Central Park. Believing this could happen would result in the utter destruction of herself, or so she fears. That being said, she isn't afraid to get what she wants.

She won't explain to anyone what happened to her, why her family won't let her home. People suspect it's because of her gender, but it could also be her profession. Whatever it is, [The Court Jester] won't reveal it. Instead, she focuses on the future, hoping to become a model for Chanel. At the very least, she's going to become a model.

He's ultra-supportive and rents out space to his NYU buddies at half the price he usually does. However, he can't seem to make it as an artist on his own. He can only seem to get his mother to buy his paintings.

Despite this, he still has had some mild success with a few sculptures bought, but [The Daredevil] senses he won't make is far with this personality.

Wednesday has always been the one people see and never hear. At some point, she stopped talking. She used to be vibrant and enjoy intellectual discussions about the most recent gallery. Now, Wednesday sneaks out at night to mark this city with her touch. She knows this is no career; it's illegal. That doesn't stop her from wanting to break out into the mainstream. All she needs is one photo in the paper, with her name attached, and she could be on the road to being seen as a true artist, not a criminal. That is if she could ever get the courage to tell her friends, much less the world, that she's the one creating all the murals.

[The Psuedo Philosopher] has always had an immense vocabulary. He can talk someone out of their own beliefs, so it's a wonder that [The Pseudo-Philosopher] wants to be a poet when he'd be better off a politician. Perhaps it's his belief that the use of LSD leads to deep artistic breakthroughs that disallow him from being anything else. He's a smug young man with a Columbia education and an anthology already published. It's a wonder why he stays in the East Village when he comes from white-collar money and a family that lives on the Upper East Side.

Now, E.T. works on writing captivating poetry that depicts these complexities- that reflects his own life. If only someone could notice his perceptivity of life.

The first faceclaim is the one that I feel fits the overall vibe of the character. However, you can pick your own beyond the suggestions. Please be mindful of diversity and the face claim suggestions when crafting a character. Faceclaims do not have to be the same ethnicity or race as the first suggestion, but try to maintain some form of diversity.
rule two.
Coding isn't necessary for character sheets, but greatly appreciated since I love seeing how everyone chooses to represent their character using code.

Normal RPNation rules apply. No godmodding, keep the drama to the characters, etc. You know how it is.
