To Hell and Back.
The Devil's Asylum, or better know as David's Virtue, is a place located in rural Texas for troubled adults , people with mental issues and people who go to reform. It's roots include a predominantly religious background where decades ago it was run by people of the church who vowed in His name to expel the evil from those poor souls who were sent to stay at David's Virtue. Treatments were harsh and degrading, torturous at times and it's history was dark to say the least. After patients turned up missing and dead, a public outcry caused the Asylum to close down in the late seventies.
A decade later it re-opened under the church once more, this time with seemingly better standards. It lasted only a few years before a fire in the main building cause it to close down indefinitely. Despite news of the establishment going dark for many years following, it seems it has opened back up again in the recent days to once again take in people with troubled minds and mental illness. This time around it has cut its ties to the church and promises to actually help those "in need".
The story begins when a group of people (the characters) are sent to this establishment all within a matter of a couple months for various reasons which may include crimes and sentencing, mental breakdowns, and even supposed "mix-ups". They originate from different places and for some reason are approached by or required to go to David's Virtue by chance, or so it seems.
At first, it seems like any other mental institution with a few more rules here and a few less there. Researching the place brings up very little other than its darker history, so one might assume it only recently came back into business. It isn't perfect, far from it in fact but there isn't much else out of the ordinary.
Except.... They're all gathered together at one point and greeted by the establishments owner, a Dr. Edward Spire. He looks young surprisingly for a doctor. His smile is gleaming white and his eyes have a dark glint to them. Something about this man feels so very wrong and yet nobody can really give a reason why. His presence sends chills up the patients spines, makes their toes curl and their stomachs heave but there seems to be nothing glaringly bad about him. He introduces himself and promises that each and every patient is "special", that his goal there is to make everyone better than when they arrived at David's Virtue.
Nobody could have expected his true intentions even if he was completely and utterly truthful upon his arrival.
Weird things start happening. Patients start losing time.... New medication regimes, new symptoms, and new routines. Things begin to change and suddenly people disappear for hours. Sometimes they can hear screaming, crying, begging... and yet when they approach the staff, the nurses and doctors, the patients are only led to believe it's in their heads surely, and that the doctors would fix them. Are treatments supposed to be painful? Are the patients supposed to feel so... different?
As if matters could get any worse, the patients themselves start to change. They're stronger. Faster. They see things differently. They can read minds. They can lift pencils with their thoughts alone...
Something is seriously wrong, Dr. Spire is looking much darker than he originally appeared, and things appaear grim.
Can the patients escape? Can they even survive?

the archangel foundation
The
The Archangel Foundation is the corporation behind David's Virtue. While they are widely unknown and work in discretion under an unknown entity or entities, they are well funded, powerful and have a foothold in decision making in the government. Their purpose is unclear, as is whether or not they can be harmful or helpful. As far as the common person knows, The Archangel Foundation does not exist. It's also unclear how high they go up the ladder in terms of leadership and permission from the government..
Dr. Edward Spire
devil
Edward J Spire, or Dr. Spire as the patients and staff know him, is an intelligent but sociopathic man. He's long since lost himself in the pursuit of science, throwing things like morals and ethics out the window a long time ago. While on the surface he reads as an apathetic and disconnected man, the insanity runs much deeper than that, poisoning his mind and skewing his priorities. He's clearly one of numerous figureheads in The Archangel Foundation, but his exact position is unclear.
Nurse Everson
is
Miranda Everson is a nurse at David's Virtue and Dr. Spire's right hand. It's clear the woman has an obsession with the doctor but its one-sided. She would do anything he asked of her which makes her a trusted underling. While she can spin words in her favor, it's clear through certain situations that the woman is sadistic and haughty. She's nearly crazier than Dr. Spire and cares just as little about ethics and morals. A twisted woman in love and also apart of The Archangel Foundation.
The Devil's Asylum
in
While under the ruse of a mental rehabilitation facility, the patients at David's Virtue quickly find out that any mental illness they have is the least of their problems. In actuality they were brought there as subjects of human experimentation, hand selected based on aspects of their physical and genetic makeup. The experiments can be disorientating, damaging, and incredibly painful. Sometimes the agony will be enough to kill a person. Those that survive are gifted certain abilities and while that may seem like enough to get them out, the technology and security in place is extremely intricate and powerful.
The Patients
the
Those brought to David's Virtue were selected for a reason. They were in a situation where they had to reside there or were manipulated into coming. They won't have people asking questions if they disappear. They're young and their bodies are healthy. And their genetic or physical disposition was ideal for experimentation. All of them may have their own mental illness, that much is true, but unfortunately the only reason that mattered to the people at David's Virtue was for convenience and cover up. At the end of the day, the patients are nothing but mentally ill guinea pigs.
The Experiments
details
The experiments used on the patients vary from person to person. They may inject someone, they may have them take pills, they may even perform surgery. And being as each experiment is different, each result is too. They might end up inhumanly strong or fast, they might be able to read minds or move things with their thoughts, or even have brand new appendages. The possibilities, like the ideas of the scientists, seem to be endless. And while the ideal result might be impossible gifts, the side effects can be just as bad which range from uncomfortable to painful to lethal. And while the scientists may take pride in the patients with successful experiments, they are only viewed as a means to acquire more knowledge and ascertain usefulness for replication. The patients comfort is at the bottom of their list of concerns.
rules
rules.
rule one.
Be able to post at least twice a week. While I don't want to criticize people word for word, I would like to consider this a detailed roleplay. Aim for paragraphs, but not every situation requires tons of info, I get that. I'd like to think I can trust everyone to understand what this means but I don't want to be a sentence dictator. If there's a problem, I will let you know.
rule two.
This is a roleplay with dark and adult themes. I would prefer everyone be 18+. And even if you are an adult, there's going to be some heavy themes surrounding mental illness and medical experimentation. I would even say horror. If you don't got the stomach for that stuff, I'm afraid this RP is not for you and would like to let you know in advance. I would also like to add characters are going to have to be a little messed up, some will be criminals, some with mental illness, etc. They aren't necessarily great, go-getter people. Realistic faceclaims only and one character per person.
rule three.
RPN rules apply on the website and the discord. Please be respectful to each other and avoid starting drama. I feel like this is a given so I won't beat a dead horse on this. Common RP etiquette applies as well. Thank you for complying with all this in advance. If you have an questions, my DMs are always open.
