It shows the powerlessness of young Vira and how frustrating that was, and also showed that she was desperate for even just a little approval for her abuser because he was the apparently the only other family she's got

True, she gave it back, but only because she chose to, meaning Lucca was at her mercy this entire time, and he's getting a bit tired of that, what with being grabbed by tree, having his guns taken away, and spending time being carried around while paralyzed, and the fact that anyone within the group could choose to kill him at any time and he won't be able to do anything about it. Add all that up with his general helplessness with every other situation encountered and you'll get a very very insecure human being.
